Sean Hogan, best known for his films The Devil’s Business and Little Deaths, has created two works of metafictional film criticism – England’s Screaming and its follow-up, Three Mothers, One Father. England’s Screaming is both a fictional history of UK genre cinema and a state of the nation address, taking films from 1945’s Dead …

From July 13th through August 2nd, the 2017 Fantasia International Film Festival offered attendees over 400 short, experimental, and feature-length film projects, which is just a mind-blowing fact to me. Over the course of several weeks, I had the opportunity to check out two titles that had been garnering some buzz as of late on the festival circuit—Better Watch Out and Fashionista—and they both delivered very unique but equally thrilling viewing experiences for this writer.
Better Watch Out: A delightfully depraved holiday treat, Chris Peckover’s Better Watch Out is one of those rare genre experiences where the less you know going into it, the more satisfying the payoffs are in this biting and darkly comedic spin on the holiday classic Home Alone. But don’t expect toy car shenanigans, slippery ice-covered stairs, or anyone slapping their face in horror after using dad’s aftershave— screenwriter Zack Kahn has more wicked intentions for viewers,...

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film Fashionista at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow, Simon Rumley reveals why he’s a fan of drugs in film and his planned foray into London gangster land…
Fashionista finds you back in Austin after Red White and Blue. What excites you about Austin so much? Could Fashionista have been set anywhere else?
I had such a great experience on Red White & Blue for so many different reasons that it was only natural that, at some point, I’d return to Austin. With Tim League (exec producer), Paul Knauss (co-producer) and Karen Hallford (casting director) I’ve got a great bunch of friends who also happen to be great collaborators and they form the core of both films’ Austin based crew and most probably without them neither films would have happened. Throughout his career, filmmaker Simon Rumley has created some of the most uniquely compelling genre efforts we’ve seen. From The Living and the Dead to Red White & Blue to his segments in the anthologies Little Deaths and The ABCs of Death, Rumley has always found ways to push audiences into uncomfortable places. His latest, Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word, looks to do the same, but in a very different way, as the film is based on the real-life court case that found a young man guilty for the rape and murder of a nun in 1981 Texas, and the strange slew of deaths of those involved in his conviction after his execution.
While at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead sat down with Rumley to discuss his latest project and heard more about his approach to the story, his thoughts on utilizing a script that he didn’t pen himself,...

There are few things in the film world more difficult to successfully cobble together than the dreaded horror anthology. With its mixture of narratives, creative voices and actors/actresses, more often than not the horror anthology picture feels closer akin to the type of short film programs many people are flocking to this Oscar season than a fully formed, singular motion picture. For every great one like Trick r’ Treat or Three Extremes there’s a complete dud like the dreadful ABC’s Of Death or the unwatchable Little Deaths. A tough balance to strike between genuine terror and shifting creative visions, the success stories seem to be the exception to the lesser picture’s rule.
That’s what makes the latest attempt at mastering this concept, Southbound, so special. Four directors are accounted for here, including Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath and the runaway stars of this show...

While the name Travis Stevens may not be familiar to horror fans, the films he’s shepherded over the last several years should: A Horrible Way to Die, Little Deaths, The Aggression Scale, The Thompsons, Big Ass Spider!, Cheap Thrills, Jodorowsky’s Dune, Starry Eyes, and the upcoming feature, We Are Still Here, which debuted at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival.
As a producer over a relatively short amount of time, Stevens has made a huge impact on the horror genre and still works tirelessly to bring engaging and unique independent projects to life. We recently chatted with Stevens about his background, his approach to producing, the state of independent horror and the one thing he recommends to aspiring filmmakers.
Thanks for speaking with me, Travis. You have done such an amazing job throughout your career finding interesting and thought-provoking films to work on that also feel different from each other.

The Penny Dreadful Picture Show isnt perfect by any stretch. Its got its problems and a couple are easily detectable. However if ever there was an inspired indie anthology its this one. In terms of pure entertainment value its right up there with recent successes All Hallows Eve Little Deaths VHS and The Theatre Bizarre. Im glad I got the chance to check it out and Ill say this sometimes its good to have friends in high places. A few weeks ago I hadnt heard peep one about a screener for The Penny Dreadful Picture Show being released (by the way the DVD has supposedly been released though I havent been able to track it down).

Andrew Parkinson's (Little Deaths) first three films - I, Zombie; Dead Creatures; Venus Drowning - are getting a proper North American release on February 18th from Jinga Films, and we have the details here.
From the Press Release:
Collectors of rare horror DVD's are in for a real treat as Jinga prepares to release a trilogy of body horror films by veteran UK genre filmmaker Andrew Parkinson on February 18, 2014.
Recognized as one of the founding fathers of the 1990's British horror revival, the writer/director has re-mastered each DVD and packed it with added value, including behind-the-scenes footage and commentaries. Moreover, the trilogy includes the previously unreleased Venus Drowning, which received acclaim at Fantastic Fest in Austin.
I, Zombie: While on a trip to the countryside, a young man is bitten by a stranger. When he returns to the city, a slow degeneration begins. In order to survive he must eat human flesh.

Little Deaths contributor Sean Hogan is in pre-production on No Man's Land for production outfit Dark Matter.
The film is another war-horror film, this one set during World War I.
Here's a synopsis; we'll keep you posted on cast details as they come in...
The Western Front, 1916. The daily struggle for survival in the trenches is terrifying enough, but the battle-weary English troops soon discover a new foe lurks on the battlefield, one far more malignant than their German opponents. An ancient race of creatures have emerged from their subterranean lair to feast on the corpses of the fallen, and no mere soldier can stand in their way.

Simon Rumley's The Last Word is getting its cast locked in place. The Hollywood Reporter reveals Mike Doyle and Erin Cummings will star in the paranormal thriller.
Written by Ben Ketai and based on actual events, the horror film will focus on the strange and tragic aftermath endured by the participants in the trial of a young man in Texas who was wrongly convicted and executed for the rape and murder of a nun.
Rumley is best known for Red White & Blue, but I definitely suggest you seek out his short film, "Bitch," seen in Little Deaths.

Horror anthologies are becoming a popular trend in film nowadays, so it's nice to see one of the early ones finally getting a DVD release. Little Deaths is a trio of films directed by UK's Sean Hogan (Lie Still), Andrew Parkinson (Venus Drowning) and Simon Rumley (Red White & Blue). The theme connecting the three films is pretty loose: sex and death. Hogan's "House and Home" has a seemingly good samaritan couple take in a homeless girl, only to reveal their true sinister intentions, which may not turn out as they planned; Parkinson's "Mutant Tool" is about a former drug addict trying to straighten her life out, who is haunted by drug-induced nightmares of a caged man with a rather large, em, 'tool'; and Rumley's...

The “omnibus” horror film – a feature length collection of cinematic horror stories – is one of the most beloved and respected horror movie genres for many reasons; but most importantly, horror is often very effective in concentrated doses (just check out our excellent short film collection for some great examples), especially with a storyline that's designed to set up one good shock or twist, saving the writer the effort of milking more scares out of a single tale. The field is overflowing with some landmark films, including the timeless 1945 classic Dead of Night (still creepy and funny after all these years); Roger Corman's Poe collection Tales of Terror; a ton of cool flicks like From Beyond the Grave from UK studio Amicus; EC Comics-inspired films like the original Tales from the Crypt (actually another Amicus film) and George Romero's Creepshow; made-for-tv faves like Trilogy of Terror; and stylish international...

Last year The Horror Channel premiered Simon Rumley’s stunning piece of award-winning cinema, The Living And The Dead and this month they are giving his equally astonishing and controversial movie Red White And Blue its UK TV premiere. Set in Austin, Texas, this dark love story follows the disaffected and promiscuous Erica (Amanda Fuller ) as she sleeps with a series of nameless men, until she is befriended by Nate (Noah Taylor), an ex-Iraq war veteran with a sociopathic streak. Nate, seems interested in Erica for more than just sex – but when one of her previous partners, hard-rocking mamma’s boy Franki (Marc Senter) resurfaces, Erica’s actions come back to haunt her, leading to a terrifying climax which has shocked audiences worldwide.
Rumley talks about his deeply shocking yet tenderly moving film, what it was like shooting the movie in America and why distributors are confounded by his work.

Perhaps it's only natural that horror's rise in popularity – in film as well as books – tends to mirror that of the Conservative party
In May 2001, Margaret Thatcher gave a speech to a gathering of Tories in Plymouth. She told the party faithful: "I was told beforehand my arrival was unscheduled, but on the way here I passed a local cinema and it turns out you were expecting me after all. The billboard read The Mummy Returns."
A joke, perhaps, but one that shouldn't be dismissed too lightly, because as the horror genre enjoys one of its shambling, cyclical returns to form, could it possibly be that such spikes in supernatural fiction's popularity do, in fact, coincide with Conservative gains on the UK's political battlefield?
A cursory glance at the points where horror fiction did enjoy periods of resurgence do tend to follow an upward graph with Tory fortunes. For example,...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Image Entertainment.
Directors/writers: Sean Hogan, Andrew Parkinson, and Simon Rumley.
The British contribution to horror cinema has always been unique. Whether the contribution is from Hammer Films or a creative mind like Clive Barker, true innovators who frequently contribute to the scene are few and far between. While the last decade had many one hit wonders from the creative direction of Danny Boyle (28 Days Later) and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), Little Deaths may very well introduce new up-and-comers into the collective.
This product offers a unique set of vignettes that brings recollections of a few lesser-known styles of cinema horror back into the limelight. The hope is that these writer/directors will have more to come in the next few years.

Little Deaths is a nasty little British horror anthology composed of three disturbing tales intertwined around such themes of sex, death and relationships.
Make no mistake, this is definitely not for everyone – this gruesome and gory trilogy displays quite graphic and extreme sexual content that will probably test even the seasoned horror film buff.
That being said, let’s dive right in, shall we?
The first entry is writer/director Sean Hogan’s House & Home, which follows disturbed, rich and religious husband and wife, Richard (Luke De Lacy) & Victoria (Siubhan Harrison), as they prey on a homeless woman, aptly titled Sorrow (Holly Lucas), with the intent of capturing, using and abusing her for their own sexual satisfaction.
What follows is revolting and vile, as we are forced to bear witness to husband and wife gleefully tormenting their victim and enjoying themselves all too much.
While this sequence is quite harrowing,...

Simon Rumley has made a name for himself in indie horror with films like The Living and the Dead and Red White & Blue. Get set, Dreadheads; Image Entertainment is about to release the critically acclaimed horror anthology Little Deaths (review here) on unrated DVD. Directed by the UK filmmaking trio of Andrew Parkinson, Sean Hogan and Simon Rumley, the flick features three titillating and depraved tales of sex, power and retribution, all exploring just what can happen when these universal themes are violated in unspeakable ways.
Dread Central recently chatted with writer/director Rumley regarding his contribution to Little Deaths, the sado-masochistic love story "Bitch," which is centered around the relationship of strong-willed receptionist Claire (Kate Braithwaite) and her docile and obedient boyfriend Pete (Tom Sawyer), whom she literally treats like a dog. Eventually Claire’s sexual games become more than Pete can bear, and the tormented boyfriend sets in motion a series of events meant to give Claire the ultimate taste of her own medicine. During our interview with the filmmaker, Rumley...

I always feel bad for the actors in movies like Little Deaths (Image Entertainment, out Dec. 13 on DVD). A movie like Shame, which debuted to much fanfare over the weekend and featured a full-frontal Michael Fassbender, can pad its graphic nudity and otherwise twisted look at human sexuality with a classy high gloss style and pass it off as Academy Award bait. On the other hand, the folks in Human Centipede II: Full Sequence can’t really use the excuse that they engaged in terrifying on-screen bodily fluid swapping as a means to further the artistic merit of the piece. Although, sometimes exploitation for exploitations’ sake can very well qualify as its own form of art, as one could argue with Centipede.
Which brings me to Little Deaths, a horror anthology film that revels in its depiction of bodily torment and the gushing of all manner of fluids. The artistic...

Im a big fan of English comedy. I find it brash, aggressive, sometimes offensive, and genuinely hilarious (for the most part). Im not however certain as to how much I love the sinister side of the English mind, especially after experiencing Little Deaths, a sadistic and truly twisted anthology directed by a trio of upcoming English filmmakers. Dont get me wrong, this is a picture that will certainly find a home in many a collectors assemblage…...

London based romantic comedy 'The Callback Queen', written and directed by Graham Cantwell (Trapped, Anton) has finished principal photography and has entered post production. The independent film stars Irish actors Amy Joyce Hastings (The Tudors, Little Deaths), Ger Ryan (Raw, Intermission) and Sean T. O'Meallaigh (Kings, Seacht). The story follows the exploits of Kate Loughlin played by Hastings who is an ambitious but unlucky actress on the cusp of her big break and is set in the cut throat world of the London film industry.

After hanging in and around the UK for a year or so, directors Andrew Parkinson, Sean Hogan and Simon Rumley’s horror-tinged anthology “Little Deaths” is finally headed to the United States this December. Are you excited? You probably should be, especially if you enjoy bite-sized stories packaged into one cohesive cinematic experience. Of course, I haven’t seen “Little Deaths” for myself, so it could be one of the worst motion pictures to ever crawl across the pond. However, word of mouth surrounding this title has been pretty strong, so I’m kind of excited for it to make its way onto my television screen next month. I cant wait! Have a look at the official plot synopsis: Well-to-do home owners Richard and Victoria pose as religious do-gooders and lure homeless girls to their luxurious home. Apartment dwellers Claire and Pete invigorate their love life with a role-playing game with increasingly hazy boundaries.

The writer and director of 2008's horror flick Scarce, Jesse T. Little Deaths is a horror anthology that features three films involving sex and death. There is a story of homeowners luring desperate women to a warm house, which they will never leave again. In another story, a former pimp and prostitute try to play it straight to moderate success. And finally, another couple enjoys a sexually themed role playing game that pushes things a little too far. All of these stories are featured in Image Entertainment's DVD release of Little Deaths which will warm retailers' shelves December 13th. Enjoy the preview of this diverse film below.

Earlier this year, Sean Hogan collaborated with Simon Rumley (The Living and the Dead, Red, White and Blue) for the film Little Deaths. Hogan brings a new film to Fantastic Fest called The Devil’s Business. Completely shot on the Canon 5D Dslr, The Devil’s Business tells a story of a couple of hit men that enter their target’s house to carry out the hit. Unfortunately for them, this target is a little different than their typical subjects.
Cully (Jack Gordon), a relatively green hitman, tries to use this job as an opportunity to learn more about his partner, a veteran, Mr. Pinner (Billy Clarke). While Pinner puts Cully in check most of the time, they actually learn more about each other than I think either wants to know. Among this, they discover that the man they are ordered to kill might possibly deal with the occult. When the job gets completed,...

UK cult sensation and festival favorite Simon Rumley will direct Adam Allecca's psychological horror/ thriller Skin for Pch Films, Bloody Disgusting learned. Voted #3 "best horror script" on last years Blood List, " 'Skin' is a taut psychological thriller about an insecure woman who becomes addicted to plastic surgery after marrying a well-intentioned surgeon. When a procedure goes horribly wrong, she slips into madness. Blaming the surgeon and his friends, she takes gruesome revenge." Rumley most recently directed the jaw-dropping "Bitch" as part of the psycho sexual horror anthology Little Deaths. Rumley's award winning Red White & Blue was picked up by IFC Midnight and will be released theatrically this week in the UK by Trinity Films. UK horror-slinger Sean Hogan (Lie Still aka The Haunting of 9) is on a mini-streak of late: earlier this year he contributed one-third of the madness to a remarkably dark anthology flick called Little Deaths, and now he's back with something entirely different. (Lord knows how boring it is to watch a horror director play in the same sandbox year in and year out.) The low-key, low-budget import known as The Devil's Business may be Hogan's best work yet, and the guy has yet to work with a halfway luxurious budget. The tale is a simple, even familiar, one: two professional killers have planted themselves in the house of their next victim. Mr. Kist should be home in only an hour or two, which gives the seasoned veteran...
