The Root of Evil
ttapola11 January 2011
Oh-kay... My fellow German viewer was so passionate in their review that they forgot grammar and spell-checking. But since he's condemning Tony, it's only fair that someone examine his judgment of Tony. But a couple of things out of the way first.

Ducky's character goes through some development in this episode and David McCallum gives a touching performance. Ducky's moments add drama to the usual light tone of many (but by no means most) episodes. The main plot, meanwhile, is sufficiently twisty to keep us watching with interest, although it's hardly groundbreaking. The usual high standard is followed, resulting in a 7/10 overall.

In the end, I was left wondering, "Why does my German fellow user get so upset?" Tony's actions fall into the gray area at worst, but immoral? Hardly. Then there is their harsh 1/10 rating for this episode. And the fact that their claim of lack of character development is completely contradictory to the evidence in recent episodes.

Even if my opinion is not considered, the plausibility that this episode would be a 1/10 is definitely approaching zero when you start to think about what 1/10 means: The. Worst. It. Can. Possibly. Be. IMDb Bottom 100 bad. Waaaay too many users throw ones and tens haphazardly, not realizing the extremes that 1/10 and 10/10 imply. It's a good thing the ratings of these people do not affect the IMDb Top 250 thanks to the undisclosed, but obviously effective filters and the vague "only votes from regular voters are considered" declaration. I'd be willing to bet most of these extremists are not users dedicated enough to earn the status of a "regular voter"...

Good story let down by out-of-character behaviour and plot holes
akicork7 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
All three of the men involved in the Afghanistan operation gave in, at least briefly, to temptation when presented with millions of dollars belonging to their terrorist target, but it seems that only the Lieutenant provably did anything wrong. Under the impression that their colleague had been taken, probably killed, by terrorists reclaiming the money, the others returned to their normal life-paths. The Sergeant completed his duty and found an honest civilian job as a taxi driver: returning to his home, the Captain consoled the widow of his lost comrade, which led to a perfectly understandable relationship. There is nothing there to condemn. I think there *is* a plot hole which loses the episode a star from the 8 it might have got: why on earth did Mayne return so close to his home that (the now) Major Holcomb might spot him, even pass him in the street? Why not set up in Crested Butte, Colorado, and operate all that stolen capital from there, away from old acquaintances? For the loss of several more stars, I have to go with the reviewers who find Tony's actions appalling. Another reviewer has referred to a "gray area". So far as I can see, the grey area here is the dividing line between murder and manslaughter (or whatever is the equivalent in whichever jurisdiction claims rights over John Mayne' s death). Although he had full knowledge of the patient's medical condition, Tony moved his bed, changing the curvature of his spine, with knowledge of the position of the bullet, and subjected him to questioning which he proceeded to monitor by reference to the patient's heart rate. The patient subsequently died after suffering an elevated heart rate. Tony probably did not intend for Mayne to die. However, an aggressive prosecutor might well make a case that, given his knowledge of the patient's condition, Tony had the Mens Rea to prove Murder (i.e. the intention). Given that there might be difficulty in that area, there should be no problem in showing that in his actions Tony showed Recklessness surpassing the criterion for Manslaughter. How some sort of investigation was avoided, the nurse having found Tony in the room with the distressed patient, is a mystery (I.e. another plot hole!). I have to say as an aside, IMDB is an international organism, supported by people of differing languages, differing cultures, differing levels of education (and, yes, occasionally, differing levels of intoxication!). Some of the people who put most effort into feeding the information that IMDB needs to survive and grow, through plot lines, synopses, reviews and all the other inputs, are not native English speakers (and some native English speakers are not actually hugely proficient in their own language!). It is not helpful to IMDB for *anyone* to snipe at the grammar or spelling of anyone else who takes the trouble to contribute.

Bad move Tony
carlottaeland29 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was appalled to see Tony go into the suspects hospital room. First of all, the man had been shot and had a bullett near his spinal cord, Tony readjusts the bed! Very bad move! Then he begins interohim, watching his blood pressure rise, and doesn't stop, but taunts the man and asks more questions. The man codes and Tony doesn't even blink!? He as good as killed the man. Another reviewer calls this merely a "gray area". I doubt they would feel that way if the man was a relative of theirs! They seemed more concerned that their favorite show was given a bad review. Other than this bad bit of writing, it was a good episode, with a far more interesting storyline of Dr. Mallard's loss.

immoral!
frannor4 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
what a big immoral piece of shi't!!! not only is this arrogant full time idiot named Toni DiNozzo permanently talking shi't, no he also kills a man just because he's an insensitive ass'hole. he forces a shot, physically unstable man to an interrogation, had him dying in consequence of the stress he caused and nobody doesn't say A SINGLE WORD about that incident. neither is Toni facing some kind of investigation!! this series gets more and more immoral with every episode and isn't worth to be watched anymore. because THIS SERIES is not a role model for the society! besides the fact that the whole cast is barely developing and behaves the same as they did the last 6 seasons!just boring and annoying.
