Andrew Garfield has come to the defence of Mel Gibson and insisted the director “deserves to make films” following his anti-Semitic scandal in 2006.The 41-year-old actor - who is Jewish - worked with the Gibson, 68, on 2016 World War II drama ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, and he doesn't agree that the 'Mad Max' star Gibson should continue to be shunned in Hollywood as he has learned from his past mistakes and is a "real empathetic guy”.During an interview with People, Garfield said: “He’s done a lot of beautiful healing with himself. And thank God. Because he’s an amazing filmmaker, and I think he deserves to make films. “He deserves to tell stories, because he has a very, very big, compassionate heart. He's the kind of director that would come from behind the monitors, just with his eyes wet. “He knew when it was right and he knew when it wasn't right.

Mel Gibson still plans to direct Lethal Weapon 5. It’s written, but Gibson admits the film is being held up, and he doesn’t know why.
Mel Gibson has been primarily staying behind the camera of late for his filmmaking, his assorted controversies leaving his leading man status pretty much irreparably damaged. As a director, he’s completed his latest movie – Flight Risk, which is due early next year – and he’s been juggling The Passion Of The Christ 2 as well.
But also, following the passing on director Richard Donner, he’s also announced his intention to direct Lethal Weapon 5, offering another swansong for the characters of Riggs and Murtaugh, as played by Gibson and Danny Glover.
It comes over 25 years after the rushed Lethal Weapon 4, and before he died, Richard Donner had been working on the film. Reportedly, before he passed, he asked Gibson to direct Lethal Weapon 5 instead.

Mel Gibson has been developing two high-profile sequels — Lethal Weapon 5 and The Passion of the Christ 2 — but he isn’t sure which project he’ll direct first.
“I don’t know, and that’s the funny thing,” Gibson told ComicBook.com. “I mean, there’s various obstacles to getting any film up on its feet, and not just budgetary, but there’s like, there’s 1,000,001 reason why something goes and why it doesn’t. So it’s really kind of a crapshoot at this point what goes first and which came first, whether it’s the chicken or the egg.“
Richard Donner directed the first four movies in the Lethal Weapon franchise, but after he passed away, the responsibility for the fifth installment fell to Gibson. “I’m going to direct the fifth film in the Lethal Weapon series. You know, Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away.

Mega-famous actor and director Mel Gibson may be known for his explosive racist tirades as much as he is for any of his blockbuster films, but, hey, at least he hasn’t done blackface — yet.
In a recent interview with the Inspire Me podcast, Gibson confirmed that he is currently in production on the fifth (official) installment of the Lethal Weapon series, which Gibson has been planning to direct and star in for a few years now. Gibson will take the reins from the franchise’s previous director, the late Richard Donner, and the star promised to fulfill Donner’s vision for the pentalogy. Said Gibson of Donner’s plans for Lethal Weapon 5, “He had gotten a fair way into the screenplay, so we’ve used what was there, and we kept poking at it, working at it a little. I’m pretty happy with it. It’s good.

Before director Richard Donner passed away back in July of 2021, he had been developing a fifth and final entry in the Lethal Weapon film franchise, saying that he, as the director of the first four films, had a “privilege and duty to put it to bed.” When Donner died, he passed that duty over to franchise star Mel Gibson – not a bad choice, given that Gibson has directed some major box office hits himself, and won the Best Director Oscar for Best Picture winner Braveheart. Back in 2022, Gibson assured us that Lethal Weapon 5 is going to happen one of these days. Now, during an interview on the Inspire Me podcast, Gibson has revealed that he has gotten the screenplay – which has been worked on by the likes of Richard Wenk (The Equalizer) and Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow) – to a point where he’s happy with it.

Mel Gibson has confirmed Lethal Weapon 5 is still in the works and reiterated he will be taking over directing duties from the late Richard Donner.
During an appearance on the Inspire Me Podcast, the once-embattled actor gave an update on the long-gestating film, confidently stating the movie is still happening.
“I’m going to direct the fifth film in the Lethal Weapon series,” Gibson said. “Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away and he was a good friend. He kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on that one so it’ll be an honor for me to do that.”
Gibson continued by revealing Donner had “gone a fair way” with the screenplay, which they’ve mostly kept intact. “I’m pretty happy with it,” he added. “It’s funny, but it’s pretty serious too. It tackles a couple of hard issues. I’m looking forward to it.

For years now, we’ve been hearing that a “Lethal Weapon 5” was happening. But when filmmaker Richard Donner passed away, folks seemed to believe that perhaps the film would never happen, especially as the two leads have aged. Well, Mel Gibson is here to tell you that it is still happening.
Speaking on the Inspire Me podcast, Mel Gibson shed some light on what the current status is for “Lethal Weapon 5.” The film, apparently, is happening, and Gibson will play double-duty as filmmaker and star to bring it to life.

It’s definite: Lethal Weapon 5 is going to happen, according to Mel Gibson – and he’s going to direct it too.
The latest film from Mel Gibson as director arrives in cinemas this October. It’s called Flight Risk, and stars Mark Wahlberg in the lead role, with Lionsgate set to distribute the movie. After that, Gibson has his long-mooted follow-up to The Passion Of The Christ that he’s plotting to direct. Following that? It looks like he’s turning his attention to another project that’s been on the stove for a long, long time: Lethal Weapon 5.
Before he died in 2021, director Richard Donner had been planning to make the fifth film himself, having directed each of the others in the series. Following his death at the age of 91, it seemed that plans for Lethal Weapon 5 had been retired at that stage.

Detective Murtaugh sees a mysterious man pull out a weapon in the middle of a police station. He heroically jumps into action to protect, serve, and tackle. But it turns out it is just good ol’ Mel Gibson, who overpowers and flips this 50-year-old character, played by a 40-year-old actor, Danny Glover. Humiliated and hurt, Danny Glover spits out an iconic line that has come to define his career and become a meme, “I’m too old for this shit.” Danny Glover was too old for this shit three decades ago… but he has kept on grinding, making motion pictures ever since. But maybe Danny Glover is too old for this shit… if that “shit” is good movies. Oh, I kid! I kid!

A fresh report suggests that the long-gestating buddy cop sequel Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year, with Mel Gibson in the director’s chair.
We know that a fifth entry in the Lethal Weapon series has been in the works for a long time. The late, great Richard Donner – director of the first four films – was working on it before he passed away in 2021. Then, in the same year we heard that Mel Gibson, one half of the series’ leading duo was set to take over the directorial reins. Of course, a lot has happened in the world since 2021, with a lot of that turbulence directly affecting Hollywood film production. However, despite all of the uncertainty, Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel) is reporting that Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has a reputation for being the edgiest sitcom on television. There seems to be no line that this raunchy satire won't cross to make their characters look like fools, but the intent of the show is not to offend the viewer. The objective of the series creators is to poke fun at their characters, but the humor is often misconstrued as an intentional test of their viewership. Co-creator and star Glenn Howerton is adamant that his series doesn't just push the envelope for the sake of it.
"The way the show is talked about, it's as if that's our goal, or that our goal is to push the boundaries of what's decent or whatever," the comedian lamented to Uproxx. "And that's never the goal. That being said, what is the goal is to make people laugh. And often in order to do so, you have...

Let’s settle this debate once and for all; despite what anyone says, 1988’s Die Hard is most definitely a Christmas movie. It may be the greatest Christmas movie ever, although there are more challengers to the throne than you may think. One of the eighties’ other most influential action movies, Lethal Weapon, which came a year before Die Hard in 1987, is itself one heck of a good Christmas movie. Like Die Hard, no one thought of it as a Christmas movie when it first came out. Die Hard was a summer movie, while Lethal Weapon came out in March. Yet, over the years, it became a yuletide favorite, and indeed it has some rich Christmas themes, such as the importance of family, second chances, redemption and more.
Of course, both movies also happen to be among the best action flicks of their respective eras, so in this episode of JoBlo Face-Off,...

Earlier this week, I got to do what I always considered one of my bucket list interviews – Mel Gibson. As a child of the eighties, I watched his movies repeatedly. The Lethal Weapon series, the Mad Max movies, Braveheart, and even stuff like Forever Young and Bird on a Wire were constantly on in my household. Gibson was the man, and I’m still a massive fan of his, so when I got the opportunity to speak to him about a new movie he’s in called Bandit (read my review), in which he plays the mobbed-up mentor of Josh Duhamel’s Gilbert Galvan, a real-life bank-robber from Canada, I leapt at the chance.
Over the last few days, we teased his thoughts on Lethal Weapon 5 and his story about almost playing James Bond, but now, without further delay, is the whole interview:

Mel Gibson has claimed that the Warner Bros Discovery merger is responsible for the delays to Lethal Weapon 5.
Last year, Gibson revealed that a fifth Lethal Weapon film was on its way following the death of original director Richard Donner, aged 91.
Donner had asked Gibson to take over the script he had been developing in the event of his death, with the actor now not only starring in, but directing, Lethal Weapon 5.
The film was expected to launch on HBO Max, but has faced many setbacks, with Gibson now claiming that the only thing standing between him and the project was the recently announced merging of Warner Bros and Discovery.
“The only delay is now with all the shake-up at Warners, with Discovery coming in and the new boss, and they chop everyone else up and throw them away and get new people,” Gibson told ScreenRant.

Martin Riggs may not make things complicated, but the Warner Bros. Discovery merger sure has for “Lethal Weapon 5.”
Lead star and director Mel Gibson, who famously plays Detective Martin Riggs in the film franchise, gave an update on the state of the fifth installment. Following original director Richard Donner’s death in 2021, Gibson took over as director, using a script from Richard Wenk developed alongside the late Donner. The film was expected to originally launch on streaming platform HBO Max.
“The only delay is now with all the shake-up at Warners, with Discovery coming in and the new boss [David Zaslav],” Gibson told ScreenRant. “They chop everyone else up and throw them away and get new people. It always takes time for these companies to regroup, so that’s been a delay, but I’m pretty confident we’ll get this one up on its feet, probably shoot it in...

It isn’t every day that you get to speak to one of your childhood heroes on the phone, but that’s precisely what happened to me recently when given the opportunity to interview the one and only Mel Gibson. The legendary star is out promoting a movie he’s in called Bandit, which tells the true story of bank robber Gilbert Galvan Jr (played by Josh Duhamel), who, in the 80s, robbed 59 banks all over Canada with little more than a handful of disguises and some frequent flyer miles. Gibson plays a shady character named Tommy Kay who helps fund his caper; in it, he seems to be having the time of his life. Indeed, Gibson seemed thrilled with how the film turned out and the experience of working with both director Allan Ungar (the famous Uncharted Live Action Fan Film) and Duhamel. We’ll have the full Q...

Fxx’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is revisiting a past controversy in its current fifteenth season.
In 2020, Netflix pulled an episode of the long-running comedy titled Dee Reynolds: Shaping America’s Youth, which included an interpretation of Lethal Weapon 5. In the episode, show creator and cast member Rob McElhenny plays Danny Glover’s character, Murtaugh, and uses blackface. A later episode offers Lethal Weapon 6, which also uses blackface.
But times change, and what was once deemed funny now is viewed differently in 2021.
McElhenney acknowleged that the show sometimes goes too far in remarks at an FX Network press conference.
“I find that my barometer is off for what’s appropriate sometimes in situations because, like, we’ve spent 15 years making a show about the worst people on the planet, and because it’s satire, we lean so heavily into this idea,” he said. “And then we are always,...
