A coming-of-age drama about Argentinian icon Eva Peron and two Spanish comedy dramas, Band Of Buffoons and A Series Of People, are among the stand out series projects presented at the fourth edition of the Iberseries & Platino Industria Co-Production Forum in Madrid this week.
Evita Behind The Icon is a coming-of-age drama about Argentina’s former first lady. Described by its creators as a “punk and justice-driven” Evita, the series is produced by Argentina’s Kapow, with Paula Hernández directing.
Band Of Buffoons is a mix of black comedy and drama and is produced by veteran César Benítez’s Plano a Plano.

There’s something about an isolated horror flick that just makes you feel at home. Kick your shoes off, relax, and make a snack because we’re not going anywhere. Yes, there is a huge man outside wearing a giant parka who wants to beat your face with a tire iron but hey we’re home for the night. Settle in!
Today, we’re talking about 2012’s Atm which features two guys and a girl trapped in an Atm kiosk booth in the middle of the night as the aforementioned killer wearing an Urban Legends parka stalks them. In the movie, Brian (David Hargrove) has a huge crush on Emily (Alice Eve) and finally works up the nerve to ask her out at a company party on her last day. "Do something about it!!" Vertical Ent. + Roadside Attractions have revealed the first official trailer for The Desperate Hour, an intense "real time" thriller starring Naomi Watts as a mother. This one originally premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year under the title Lakewood (a reference to the location where this film takes place in), but because it received so many mid to bad reviews, they decided to give it a different name. A mother on a jog in the woods desperately races against time to return and save her child as authorities place her small town on lockdown following a school shooting. In addition to Watts, the cast features Colton Gobbo and Sierra Maltby. The screenplay is written by the same writer as the thriller films Buried, Atm, Mercy, and Greenland. This definitely looks very suspenseful, but the big twist partway through this trailer is a bit strange. So...

Chinese authorities have registered and approved a new project written by Hong Kong-based auteur Wong Kar-wai, listed as “Chungking Express 2020.”
According to an official filing on the National Film Bureau’s website, the script was submitted for government approval in Shanghai in April, and was approved on Wednesday, Sept. 23. This means it can now move forward with plans for production.
The project was listed by Shanghai Fanhuali Development Company, a firm that is also involved in the TV serial “Blossoms,” which credits Wong as creator and producer. The company has previously been involved in just two films: Pema Tseden’s arthouse stunner “Jinpa,” and, incongruously, “Atm,” a slapstick-y 2019 remake of a Thai rom-com.
The filing offers a short, but slightly cryptic, plot summary: “In ’90s Hong Kong, broken-hearted Policeman 223 encounters a blonde female assassin, and they spend a short time together overnight. Policeman 663, who also is getting over heartbreak, sees...

I was interested when J. Cole announced the release of a new album. People have built a mythical status around him, and it’s hard to ignore his past accomplishments. The psychedelic cover art and general animosity towards “mumble rap” displayed a flavourful, different project than the rest and I became almost excited. However, throughout the album, J. Cole frequently disappoints with half-baked ideas and dry instrumentation.
The intro is polished, featuring an almost lo-fi style instrumentation behind the narration of a woman describing the effects of pain on humans. However, it sets the tone of how deep our message will really go, simply demanding, “choose wisely”, referring to drug and alcohol abuse. In the title track, “Kod” J. Cole sets the mood and tone of the album. The track leads with simplistic and stiff trap drums, and a flow both reminiscent and maybe even mimicking the scene he’s currently ridiculing.

A new horror film is coming your way via Xyz Films. Titled Mercy, the film involves a dying mother and a possible contested inheritance. The film's first trailer shows several masked characters attempting to kill a fractured family. Starring Constance Barron, Michael Donovan and Caitlin FitzGerald, this feature will be at the La Film Festival, in early June. As well, the film will show on Netflix later this year. A preview for Mercy is hosted here. The official synopsis reveals more about the film's central conflict. Four estranged brothers reunite to say good-bye to their dying mother. While at her home, they are attacked by a mysterious group, who hounds their isolated home. Director Chris Sparling has written screenplays for other thrillers. Hot off the heels of distributing their first feature film in select theaters and online (that would be Cary Fukunaga's "Beasts of No Nation"), Netflix doesn't plan on slowing down any time soon. The streaming service announced today they have acquired two more films for online releases in 2016. The first of these titles, "Mercy," comes from writer Chris Sparling, who also wrote and worked on projects such as "Buried," "Atm" and Gus Van Sant's "The Sea of Trees." The film is described as a home invasion thriller starring James Wolk and Tom Lipinski in line with Sparling's other chamber thrillers, which usually feature a minimal amount of characters confined to a particular setting. The second deal is for the anticipated noir-tinged comedy "Girlfriend's Day," co-written and starring Bob Odenkirk, who plays an unlucky greeting card writer who must fight to prove his innocence when he's framed for murder....

That's why it's easy for us to recommend a smart new horror movie called The Atticus Institute, which hits Blu-ray, DVD and Video On Demand platforms next week Written and directed by Chris Sparling (who wrote Buried and Atm), The Atticus Institute is about Dr. Henry West (William Mapother, who is always great to see), a scientist in the '70s who ran a program meant to test people's supernatural abilities. Over the years a few of his test subjects exhibit some amount of Esp promise, but everything is turned upside down when they come across a patient named Judith who is by far the most impressive...

Production on Gus Van Sant’s latest epic, The Sea Of Trees, came to a close this week after a long shoot in both Japan and the U.S. To coincide with the end of principal photography, we’ve been offered at glimpse at the first official image from the completed film. Naomi Watts hit a brief career rough patch following her Oscar nominated turn "The Impossible." A couple of indies—"Adore" and "Sunlight Jr."—were barely seen, while she was savaged ruthlessly by critics for last year's biopic flop "Diana." But she's got a very promising slate coming up with roles in Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," the buzzed "Saint Vincent De Van Nuys" and Noah Baumbach's "While We're Young." And she's adding yet another auteur to her filmography. THR reports the actress is in talks to join Gus Van Sant's "Sea Of Trees" opposite Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe. And yes, that's a helluva pairing. Penned by Chris Sparling ("Buried," "Atm"), the 2013 Black List script follows an American man taking a journey into the infamous “Suicide Forest” at the foothills of Mount Fuji with the intention of taking his own life. The McConaissance continues! But perhaps we should stop being surprised at the choices Matthew McConaughey is making and just accept that he's no longer the shirtless himbo you thought he was. Now focused on interesting work with top tier talent, even when the actor has gone for a blockbuster, it's been with Christopher Nolan on his forthcoming "Interstellar." But his next move once again finds McConaughey choosing something small and potentially great. The Wrap reports that McConaughey and Ken Watanabe have joined Gus Van Sant's "Sea Of Trees." The project first bubbled up to our attention when it was reported in December that Joaquin Phoenix was taking an interest, and, as much as we like him, McConaughey will do just fine. Anyway, the project is a promising one, with the script by Chris Sparling ("Buried," "Atm") landing on the 2013 Black List and telling the story of an American man...

Into That Cold Night: Chun’s Sophomore Feature a Likeable Effort
You’re going to have to look past the unfortunate poster art for Cold Comes the Night, the sophomore feature from indie filmmaker Tze Chun, which seems to position the film as an unabashed cheapie lurking behind a graceful and elegant title. But once you do, you’ll be in for a satisfying surprise as Chun’s film plays like an echo of classic film noirs of the studio (or even a handful of 1990s neo-noirs), those poetically titled gems that feature hardworking or fast talking dames trying to get ahead any way they can in the cruel ways of a male dominated world. True, there’s a certain B grade element to its pulpy and sometimes violent certainties and convenient twists, but anchored staunchly by a couple furiously committed performances, it’s one of the most engaging examples...

Man is there a lot of new content on streaming services this week. There are literally hundreds of new titles available for your viewing pleasure, I couldn’t possibly have written about all of it because I would be writing into next week! Just know that there is something there for everyone whether your bag is comedy, drama, action or horror.
Most impressively this week, Netflix have stepped up to the plate and unleashed a full load of good stuff. They have also announced that they are going to add an audio commentary to their original show House of Cards, which can only be good news for those holding on to their physical media love and may mean that this most valuable of DVD extras is not going away but will instead be reborn in a different guise.

Chris Sparling, the writer of Buried and Atm, is making his directorial debut with the supernatural thriller The Atticus Institute. Peter Safran of The Conjuring is on producing duties and we've got a synopsis for you below. Courtesy of Twitch, the sales art to tout the film at the American Film Market.
During the late 1970s, hundreds of cases of psi-related phenomena - E.S.P., clairvoyance, psychokinesis, etc. - were studied at The Atticus Institute, a small psychology lab founded by Dr. Henry West.
After publishing numerousjournal articles highlighting the promising results of their work, Dr. West and his fellow researchers were introduced to an unusual middle-age womannamed Judith Winstead, whose supernatural abilities tested far beyond any subject they had ever before witnessed. However, it soon became clear that Judith’s abilities were different in ways they could never have anticipated.

A dream fulfillment for bald eagles, gun owners, and young men, the original Red Dawn is a unique American classic that doesn’t joke about its pulpy plot of teens fighting against conquer-hungry Soviets. The 2012 remake of the film, released a day before Thanksgiving, carries much of the same spirit of the original, but with bigger scale, louder explosions, and Chris Hemsworth playing the character formerly embodied by Patrick Swayze.
In this movie from director Dan Bradley, Hemsworth plays Jed Eckert, a former Marine who returns home to live in suburban peace with his father and hot shot quarterback brother Matt (Josh Peck). The stillness of the Midwest is abruptly canceled when they are invaded by North Korea, sending the Eckerts into the woods, and turning these budding soldiers from boys to men.
Peck might still be best known for his work on the cable sitcom “Drake & Josh,” in which he starred alongside Drake Bell.

Josh Peck needs no introduction for anyone ages 18 to 25 who grew up on a steady diet of Nickelodeon. He spent his childhood side-by-side with fellow actor Drake Bell as one-half of the comedy duo Josh and Drake. Peck also starred with Amanda Bynes on her hit television series from 2000 to 2002. In between all that, he voiced several characters for successful movies and shows like the Ice Age movies, What’s New, Scooby-Doo?, and Code Name: Kid’s Next Door.
In 2008, the actor began branching out in different directions to sharpen his skills. Recently Peck has been seen in more adult-oriented films. He took on the role of a college-bound New York drug-dealer in The Wackness. The versatile actor found himself the captive of a crazed killer in the horror / thriller Atm.
His latest role has Peck inheriting Charlie Sheen’s character in the remake of the classic 1984 film “Red Dawn.

Looks like we’ll be getting another movie with the awesome character, Charles “Chucky” Lee Ray, along with the character’s original creator (Don Mancini) set to write/produce/direct, and Brad Dourif (Chucky’s original voice).
The film is in production as we speak in Winnipeg, Canada, and will be released straight-to-home video.
This is meant to be a return to the horror emphasis of the original, dialing back on the humorous tone present in Bride Of Chucky and Seed Of Chucky.
From ComingSoon.net:
“Since his introduction to audiences in ‘Child’s Play’ almost a quarter-century ago, Chucky has haunted the nightmares of a generation of moviegoers,” said Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “Returning to his roots in one of the most provocative horror franchises, this new sequel will shock longtime fans of the series and newcomers alike.”

The Child's Play horror franchise is getting a sixth installment. It's been announced that the Curse of Chucky has officially started shooting in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I've never been the biggest fan of Chucky, they haven't made for the best horror films, and I doubt I'll end up watching this one. For those of you who do like the franchise here's the synopsis:
Nica (Fiona Dourif) is grieving over the gruesome suicide of her mother when her domineering older sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti) arrives with her young family in tow to help settle their mother's affairs. As the sisters butt heads over Nica's plans for the future, Barb's young daughter comforts herself with a grinning, red-haired talking doll named Chucky (voiced again by Brad Dourif) that recently arrived mysteriously in the mail. But as a string of brutal murders begins to terrorize the household, Nica suspects the doll may hold the key to the bloodshed.
