S02Ep21: The penultimate episode, with a "what-if?" alternate timeline after Zedd's spell produces an unexpected result - the Kingdom at peace, Richard married to Kahlan and her "with child".
An entertaining play on the "temporal paradox" which lies at the root of all good time-travel and "Alternate Universe" stories.
The action is credible and plausibly acted; Cara needs to be rescued *again" from her betrayal by Darken Rahl. In doing so, Zedd unleashes a different alternate reality in which Cara is a widow in Stowecroft with two young children.
Of course, evil (the Keeper) seeks to exploit this difference. Eventually, Zedd has to re-cast the spell to put everything back as it was at the end of S02Ep20. Not before Zedd and Kahlan have done the obligatory "plus and minus" debate about the dilemma of the options (including the implication that her child will never exist on the return to the mainstream timeline). But for this to work, they have to reach Cara before Darken Rahl gets to her....... The episode ends with the (frankly, to be expected) "to be continued" cliff-hanger. A good piece of theatre.
Well-acted, straight-faced, earnest dialogue without being cheesy; the entire team behind this series can be proud of the legacy of material which they have left behind.
Having discovered this series in 2018 (the two seasons ran between 2008-2010), this penultimate episode continues to justify the investment in the DVD box set. One more episode remains.
