ABC has given a pilot production commitment to Happy Accident, a single-camera family comedy from Modern Family writers Abraham Higginbotham and Jon Pollack, 20th Century Fox TV, where both Higginbotham and Pollack are under overall deals, and ABC Studios.
The project originated as a spec script developed in house at 20th TV, which will now co-produce with soon-to-be corporate sibling ABC Studios. A director and casting director will be named shortly with the intent to start casting immediately and production expected to begin early in the upcoming pilot season.
Written and executive produced by Higginbotham and Pollack, Happy Accident centers around two Pittsburgh families — a father with three adult daughters, and a hotel lounge singer with her med student son — who are forced together after a decades-old secret is revealed.
Both Higginbotham and Pollack serve as executive producers on 20th TV-produced ABC family comedy Modern Family. Prior to Modern Family,...

This year, there have been quite a few films with notable original scores and soundtracks, everything from “Manchester by the Sea” to “Jackie” to the original songs of “Sing Street.” But in Damien Chazelle’s latest film “La La Land,” music plays a central role in the larger-than-life courtship of an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) and a jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling). It features plenty of original musical numbers, but also a romantic, jazzy score that sets the mood in every scene, courtesy of Justin Hurwitz. Listen to the original score in full below from Spotify.

Ginny Baker is a social media darling and inspires so many great catch phrases and hashtags!

Bawson phone call.
We were finally introduced to Mama Baker. What did you think of her and her relationship with Ginny?

If you've been watching ABC's family comedies over the last few years, Speechless will feel simultaneously familiar and unusual, both in ways that are reassuring. Since the debuts of Modern Family and The Middle, ABC has had an uncanny knack for developing single-camera comedies about families, each of them feeling like part of the some coherent brand, but having their own distinct voice and perspective. Not all of them have entirely clicked (The Real O'Neals is still figuring itself out, though it has moments), but there are safer bets in the TV business right now. Based on the pilot episode, at least, Speechless (it debuts tomorrow at 8:30, in between The Goldbergs and Modern Family) looks like another winner. The hook here is that the family, headed by Maya Dimeo (Minnie Driver) — husband Jimmy (John Ross Bowie from Big Bang Theory) knows his role is to support Maya's leadership and...

Last week, I posted a pair of "You're the Worst" interviews: one with creator Stephen Falk, one with stars Aya Cash and Chris Geere. I actually did a third interview about the show at press tour, but the transcript needed some extra time to get done, because it was conducted in the very noisy venue where Fox held its joint Fox/FX/Fxx party. While it wasn't conducive to transcription, the atmosphere felt appropriate for a conversation with the lively and candid Kether Donohue. And by waiting a week, I get to publish it a few hours before tonight's episode (at 10:30 on Fxx) features Donohue in a terrific Lindsay subplot that, among other things, requires her to eat (as you can see from the picture above) a lot of wings. We spoke about eating and drinking on camera (and the various tricks of the trade actors use to avoid...

Olivia Munn has held a special place in the hearts of gadget geeks since Attack of the Show, and her off-kilter roles (like in Beyond the Break, and the unfortunately short-lived Perfect Couples) have earned her a kind of cult following. Of course, The Newsroom isn’t hurting her status either.
She’s in the upcoming film Mortdecai, playing alongside Johnny Depp as a character with a thing for mustaches, but perhaps more importantly, she’s on the cover of January’s Popular Mechanics, and is hosting The Incredibly Special Effects Awards inside the issue. The awards salute the year’s most stunning technological moments in film, including miniature hotels, digital aliens, lots of fake blood, and Michael Keaton. Receiving awards are – Gone Girl (Best Slaying of the Year), Boyhood (Best Analog Effect) and Interstellar (Achievement in Scientific Accuracy)

She’s a rare presence in Hollywood, combining comic book geekery with magazine cover sex appeal and Olivia Munn is much deeper than meets the eye.
In a new clip for Vogue, the “Perfect Couples” cutie answered 73 questions about herself while meandering around various spaces inside her home.
When asked for three things that are always in her purse, Olivia noted, “Clarks Botanicals lip gloss, my portable wifi and Proactiv Plus wipes.”
As for the best thing about 2014 so far, Miss Munn declared, “federal judges said that it’s unconstitutional for gays not to be allowed to be married.”
Her favorite food is “Thai,” while her preferred dessert is “pie” and a favorite drink to order at a bar is “a St. Germain because it makes me feel fancy.”
And if Olivia ever gets to have a St. Germain with President Barack Obama she plans to “ask him if he has any regrets.

In a small victory, NBC has renewed a freshman comedy. In a predictable defeat, NBC has cancelled a J.J. Abrams-produced drama. Actually, ABC did a lot more than that on Friday (May 9), but you've already seen Sepinwall's stories on the glorious renewal of "Hannibal" and the tragic cancellation of "Community." You can decide if you feel similar elation and dejected about this latest bit of NBC Good News/Bad News: The network has ordered a second season for "About a Boy," but NBC has also confirmed that the second season will be the end of the line for "Revolution." The renewal for "About a Boy" wasn't a shocker. Boosted by "The Voice," the Jason Katims adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel and subsequent film has been NBC's biggest comedy success in several years, even if ratings have been slipping somewhat in recent weeks. Would female characters ever stop moving to Paris when their shows drew to a close? Who actually lived in Rachel and Monica’s apartment? Would coffee ever taste the same again? While we got most of those answers, we were left with a bitter taste in our mouths. Our best friends of the past 10 years left us feeling lonely. Knowing it was time for us to change the channel, the networks rushed to fill the void. NBC tossed out a few post-Friends options that failed to capture our hearts while ABC, Fox and CBS attempted to mix up the template with a few different offerings. Sadly most of them failed (and failed badly). While How I Met Your Mother...

Happy Endings isn’t dead yet. But ABC might as well have dipped it in antelope blood, rolled it around in some truffle salt, and left it in a cage with some very hungry tigers, because tonight, the network will air the season finale — and it might also be the final episode of the show. And that’s sad, because a great sitcom like this one shouldn’t have to endure the indignities that this one has suffered, having already been yanked from the schedule for all of February and much of March, replaced by Celebrity Wife Swap (starring Coolio and Kate Gosselin!

ABC premiered another late edition to their Wednesday comedy lineup with "Family Tools." Kyle Bornheimer portrays Jack Shea, a bumbling doofus with a good heart who returns home to take over his father's handyman business. J.K. Simmons is as crusty as ever as Jack's dad, Tony, who isn't at all keen about his son taking over the family business. But by the end of this pilot, he'd already had two heart attacks, so it was pretty clear he needed to take a step back.
Leah Remini was the mastermind behind the whole thing as Tony's little sister, Terry. After Tony's second heart attack, Terry forces him to have a heart-to-heart with his son, but Tony is a man's man meaning he doesn't really know how to.
He admits he's tougher on Jack because Jack's his son. "Yeah, that’s it. That’s all I got!" Tony said. "I’m not a shrink,...

"Family Tools" -- the new comedy based on UK series "White Van Man" -- premiered Wednesday (May 1) on ABC and we're wondering if you're planning to commit to this home improvement project or if you think the whole thing ought to be condemned?
What did you think of Kyle Bornheimer's ("Perfect Couples") performance as Jack Shea, a goofball ready to prove to his dad Tony (J.K. Simmons, "The Closer") that he has what it takes to step up and take over the family business?
How did you feel about Leah Remini's return to network comedy after "King of Queens" came to an end in 2007, playing Terry, Jack's aunt and Tony's sister -- forcing Jack to relinquish the control of the business by refusing to let the paramedics in to the house to provide aid to Tony during a heart attack?

Family Tools debuted Wednesday at 8:30/7:30 (ABC) — will you make room for it on your workbench?
The comedy introduces the Shea family, whose patriarch Tony (The Closer‘s J.K. Simmons) suffers a heart attack and realizes he can no longer handle the family handyman business alone. One problem: The logical candidate, his son Jack (Perfect Couples‘ Kyle Bornheimer), is a chronic screw-up with a less-than-stellar career history. Everyone, naturally, is waiting for him to biff big-time in this latest pursuit.
Rounding out the cast are Leah Remini (King of Queens) as Jack’s Aunt Terry, Johnny Pemberton (21 Jump Street) as his cousin Mason,...

For some unknown reason, network TV executives are convinced that Kyle Bornheimer is destined to be a huge sitcom star. In 2008 he starred in CBS' Worst Week (cancelled after 16 episodes). In 2010 he starred in ABC's Romantically Challenged (cancelled after four episodes). And in 2011, he starred in NBC's Perfect Couples (cancelled after 11 episodes).
Now he's in ABC's new comedy Family Tools, premiering Wednesday, May 1 at 8:30pm. But surely this time he'll finally break through, right?...

When Olivia Munn's character of Sloan Sabbith first appeared on "The Newsroom" last summer, she was on screen for a small number of scenes, usually as comic relief. But by the sixth episode "Bullies," she had developed a commanding presence and is now an essential part of the ensemble. -Insertgroups:15- "If you perform at a certain level, they start to give you more," revealed Munn in a video interview with Gold Derby. She had just completed work on "Perfect Couples," "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," and "Attack of the Show" when casting began for Aaron Sorkin's new HBO drama. "I knew I wasn't favored to even audition for it. Against all my representation, I turned down other offers just for the hope of auditioning for Sorkin, no matter how small it was." The series is set in the newsroom of a cable news network in New York City.

It’s pilot season, which means your favorite out-of-work TV actors, actresses, creators and writers are getting a chance to return to the small screen once more.
Although we have yet to know what new series we’ll see next year, the networks have been busy selecting projects to consider for their schedules. So far, almost 100 scripts have been chosen, and audiences will only get to see a handful actually come to fruition.
Several are duds, but there are a few promising prospects that I hope network executives will keep around for the 2013-2014 season — even if it means they have to cancel old favorites to make room (just keep Parks and Recreation, Ok, NBC?).
Check out my choices for the best prospective pilots NBC and CBS have ordered, and come back tomorrow to see my picks for ABC and Fox:

1.) Though he most recently worked on the ill-fated HBO series "Luck," Michael Mann hasn't directed a feature since 2009's Public Enemies. In the years that have passed, he's tossed around plenty of interesting ideas, including the racing pic Go Like Hell and the war photographer biopic Waiting for Robert Capa, but he could just never commit. Well, it finally looks like he's ready to settle down and take the helm on an untitled thriller "set in the world of cyber threats and attacks." And luckily for him (excuse the pun), Chris Hemsworth happens to have a gaping hole in his schedule thanks to the delays facing Steven Spielberg's Robopocalypse and is now attached to star. The film is currently set up at Legendary with a planned June start date. Variety 2.) In a rather odd move, Universal has hired two screenwriters to write rival scripts for their planned Mummy franchise reboot.

John Quaintance and David Feeney have been elevated to executive producers and co-showrunners on Fox‘s freshman comedy Ben And Kate. They will co-run the series with a creator/executive producer Dana Fox. They succeed Garrett Donovan and Neil Goldman, who departed over a month ago. Ben And Kate is the lowest-rated member of Fox’s new Tuesday comedy block. Great guest spots are one of my favorite aspects of television. The occurrence can combine an actor and a show that are perfect for one another — even if it’s just temporarily. Ryan King's recovery from the death of his wife may hit a rough patch in Tuesday's (Oct. 2) episode of "Go On." Having visions of your late spouse qualifies as rough, right?
As Zap2it first reported in August, Christine Woods ("Perfect Couples") is playing Ryan's (Matthew Perry) wife, Janie, and Tuesday's episode will offer our first look at her (not counting a couple photos in Ryan's grief collage last week). As you can see in the exclusive clip above, Ryan is a little weirded out to have her back in his life.

The "Up All Night" family is growing: An episode set for October will introduce us to Scott's (Luka Jones) ex-wife.
