The financial collapse of 2008 was brought about by many factors – including governmental deregulation and lack of proper oversight – but make no mistake, there were plenty of flat-out crooks involved. And were it not for the staggering scale of Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff’s deception, Marc Dreier and his $750 million fraud would likely be the name most lastingly associated with American white collar crime. Filmed over the last two months of Dreier’s house arrest, leading up to his prison sentencing, “Unraveled” unfolds in unique fashion, offering up a rare first person reflection on scamming of this sort. Even more unique, however, is the fact that the film’s director, Marc Simon (no relation to this [ Read More ]...

Although Bernie Madoff’s December 11, 2008 arrest made bigger headlines, Marc Dreier committed securities fraud to the tune of more than $750 million, a detail not overlooked in Marc H. Simon’s new documentary Unraveled. Opening Friday at select theaters across the country, Simon’s film offers a uniquely intimate portrait of the former Manhattan attorney in his final days under house arrest before being sentenced for his crimes. Photos: The Scene at Occupy Wall Street The Hollywood Reporter has secured an exclusive clip from the film, in which Dreier discusses prison accommodations with his lawyer. Title: Unraveled Director: Marc H. Simon If not for Bernie Madoff, Marc Dreier would likely be the name presently most synonymous with modern-era, American white collar swindling, to the tune of $750 million in fraud. The well packaged documentary “Unraveled” provides a fascinating look at the psychology and rationalizations of such a criminal mastermind, unfolding in a series of reflective interviews over the last two months of Dreier’s house arrest prior to criminal sentencing, in the gilded cage of his Upper East Side penthouse. If the cinematic treatment of crime is too often distilled to black-and-white morality in the name of entertainment, this engaging movie is awash in grey — about [ Read More ]...

Putting a human face on the criminality of the financial crisis, Unraveled explores the downfall of Marc Dreier, a prominent Manhattan attorney who was arrested in 2009 for embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars from hedge funds. The documentary places us in the “guilded prison” of Dreier’s upper East Side apartment during his 60-day house arrest. In that time, he is interviewed by none other than one of his victims, Marc Simon, who, in addition to being an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, formerly worked as a lawyer at Dreier’s law firm, Dreier L.L.P.
You wouldn’t know that from the film, however, as Simon refrains from including his personal commentary. Unraveled derives the bulk of its narration from Dreier himself. After 30 years as an attorney, Dreier was by all standards (except his own) successful: he had apartments in Los Angeles and New York, art by Marc Rothko and Andy Warhol,...

Columbus, Ohio's Red Wanting Blue wrote this song "Magic Man" for the end title sequence of the upcoming documentary feature, "Unraveled." The film tells the story of Marc Dreier -- Manhattan lawyer, graduate of Yale and Harvard Law, giant Ponzi bag -- who was convicted for orchestrating a hedge fund fraud scheme right around the same time Bernard Madoff was grabbing most of the headlines. Dreier's claim to fame was selling $700 million in make-believe promissory notes, which he then used to console his fragile ego and live a lavish lifestyle. His excesses obtained by defrauding others included, "a $10 million apartment on the Upper East Side, beachfront properties in the Hamptons, a valuable art collection, expensive cars and an $18 million yacht," according to The New York Times.
