Very engaging

I really liked the Pilot for Enlightened. The show feels effortless, and it blends in dark comedy with drama very well. It has very smooth and assured direction, and so far the writing is top notch. I am really looking forward to what Laura Dern does, since I think she was pretty brilliant in this first episode. It's also great to see Diane Ladd and their scene together in the middle of the episode was brilliantly written and performed. I am definitely looking forward to more of this show. Sometimes I am glad that the Globes exist, and if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have sought this show out. I have to say a big thank you to them, even though I admit sometimes their picks rub me the wrong way. Great start!

Pilot

The episode starts with Amy Jellicoe (Laura Dern ) having a meltdown. She has been having an affair with her married boss who has demoted her.

Now some months later, Amy is rehabilitated in a retreat in Hawaii.

Now over her nervous breakdown. Amy wants to start again and this means getting her job back.

Billed as a dramedy, the first episode is dark with not a lot of laughs. You sense that Amy's rebirth might not be straightforward. She is not taking her meds.

The pilot benefits from good performances from Laura Dern and her real life mother Diane Ladd who plays her mom.

It might take a few episodes to figure where the show is going.
