It is fitting that All My Puny Sorrows is making its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. This is a quintessential TIFF film. There is the lovely Mongrel Media animated logo opening the proceedings. The setting is a blustery Winnipeg. It has an illustrious pedigree, based on a bestselling and award-winning novel from beloved Canadian author Miriam Toews. The cast features festival favorites Alison Pill and Sarah Gadon. And the director, Michael McGowan, has a hockey musical (!) in his past.
None of these elements should be considered problematic––well, perhaps the hockey musical. And yet they all contribute to the sense of overfamiliarity and predictability that burden All My Puny Sorrows. It is by no means a misfire and features a trio of tremendous performances from Pill, Gadon, and Mare Winningham. But given the source material and the ingredients, Sorrows certainly qualifies as a disappointment.

HFPA and South African journalist Margaret Gardiner has responded on Twitter for mistakenly asking Judas and the Black Messiah Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya what it was like working with director Regina King. The Warner Bros. movie, which won two Oscars Sunday night, was directed by Shaka King. One Night in Miami, another Oscar contender last night, was directed by Regina King.
Gardiner, who reportedly was covering the Oscarcast for The Sunday Times of South Africa, asked Kaluuya remotely, “I’ve been following you since the beginning of your career, and I was wondering what it meant for you to be directed by Regina, what this means for you at this time with the world and the state that it’s in?”
The actor responded, “Say, that question again, please?”

This morning, in a rare feat, composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross pulled a pair of Original Score nominations for Soul and Mank.
Throughout film history, we’ve often seen a single composer earn two Academy Award nominations for different films, in the same year. The most recent to do so was Alexandre Desplat, who was nominated in 2014 for both The Imitation Game and The Grand Budapest Hotel. (Desplat won for the latter film).
But composer duos are another thing altogether.
While Edward Plumb and Paul Smith earned two Score noms way back in 1943, for the films Saludos Amigos and Victory Through Air Power, those came in the separate categories of Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture, and Scoring of a Musical Picture.
In the modern era, where Score is condensed into one category, only Reznor and Ross have been nominated as a duo for two separate films,...

Hamilton Leithauser gets a haircut from Maggie Rogers in the teaser for “Isabella.” The singer-songwriter also announced a new album, The Loves of Your Life, out April 10th via Glassnote Records.
The clip follows the video for “Here They Come,” in which Leithauser took a brutal beating from Ethan Hawke after playing the actor his new song. He shows up to meet Maggie Rogers with a bandage across his face from the altercation. “As I was already on my way to play my song ‘Isabella’ for my writer-musician friend who happens to be pretty stylish,...

It's a story we've all heard before: a highly educated immigrant who can't get a job in Canada or the United States because their credentials don't transfer over. Now there's a new (and hilarious) movie about it.
"Dr. Cabbie," which was shot entirely in Toronto and stars Vinay Virmani ("Score: A Hockey Musical") and Kunal Nayyar ("The Big Bang Theory"), follows the frustrating journey of Deepak, who applies for jobs in Toronto but quickly realizes things aren't going as he planned.
Frustrated, he resorts to driving a taxi, which ends up being more lucrative than he imagined.
(Watch trailer, above.)
The movie opens in theatres across North America on September 19.

Based on a true story, Still Mine is directed and written by Michael McGowan (One Week, Score: A Hockey Musical) and it follows the story of Craig (James Cromwell) and Irene (Genevieve Bujold), a long-married couple who live in rural New Brunswick where Craig still takes care of their sprawling farm property and the two seem to be every bit in love with one another as when they married some 60 years ago.
But when Irene starts showing early signs of dementia, Craig figures that a single-level home would make their lives easier and starts to build a house with his own hands, and the help of his extended family, when he runs afoul of a persnickety government official who keeps halting his ambitious plans.
The uplifting love story, which premiered at Tiff this past September, will be hitting select Cineplex theatres this May and we have the poster premiere for you,...

Exclusive: Last month’s Toronto Film Festival resulted in a lot of distribution deals, and also a lot of agency signings of new talent with films there. After the Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group handled the James Cromwell/Genevieve Bujold-starrer Still and made a deal with Samuel Goldwyn Films, the agency has signed the film’s writer/director/producer Michael McGowan. McGowan’s credits include the 2008 Canadian film One Week and Mongrel Media’s Score: A Hockey Musical, the latter of which opened Toronto in 2010. He also wrote and directed Alliance Atlantis’ Saint Ralph and created and produced the stop-motion animated children’s TV series, Henry’s World.

The Angels’ Share

Ireland, 2012
The choice of Ken Loach’s The Angels’ Share as this year’s Opening Gala Film was a surprise to me. Usually the festival kicks off with a homegrown film – last year it was Halifax’s own Roller Town, the year before that, Score: A Hockey Musical, both ultra-Canadian. This year, the festival went a different route, choosing a film by an English director, set in the heart of Scotland. But, as Programming Manager Andrew Murphy assured the audience before the film, “There’s plenty to relate to for us Nova Scotians. It’s set in Scotland…and it’s about smuggling booze.”
The film centers on reforming thug Robbie (Paul Brannigan), who tries his hardest to stay on the straight and narrow after avoiding a jail sentence. With the help of a friendly community service supervisor, he...

Exclusive: Allie MacDonald (Score: A Hockey Musical), Alexis Knapp (Project X), Brooke Anne Smith, Jade Bartlett and Sebastian Piggott have been cast as the the leads in Cinnamon Girl, Lifetime’s drama pilot co-created and executive produced by Renée Zellweger, which is set against the backdrop of the Los Angeles music and movie scenes of the late 1960s/early 1970s. It tells the story of four coming-of-age girls — Cassie (MacDonald), Lola (Knapp), Junie (Smith) and Lou (Bartlett) — and explores their lives at the crossroads of the era’s political, artistic, social and sexual rebellions. Zellweger co-created Cinnamon Girl with Anthony Tambakis (Warrior), and the premise is a combination of Zellweger’s real-life journey from small-town Texas to Hollywood stardom and Tambakis’ lifelong fascination with the Laurel Canyon music scene and the New Hollywood, auteur-driven era that began in the late ’60s. Inspired by Zellwegger, MacDonald’s Cassie is a beautiful,...

Three Inches, the Syfy pilot with James Marsters and Stephanie Jacobsen that didn't get ordered to series, airs tonight at 9 pm Et on Syfy.
To recap, the network ordered the 90-minute pilot back in the spring of 2010. It was filmed in September in Toronto and, in December, Syfy decided to pick up Alphas instead, and to tweak Three Inches into a half-hour because the two were conceptually similar.
Six months went by with no news, and then in July word came from James' Fb page that Syfy would not be giving Three Inches a full season, but that the pilot would air eventually. Well, that's tonight.
Here is the synopsis, from ScienceFiction.com:
In Three Inches, professional daydreamer and underachiever, Walter Spackman (Noah Reid) is struck by lightning, and develops a unique “super” power — the ability to move any object using just his mind… but only a distance of three inches.

Oscar nominee James Cromwell has joined the cast of Still, Michael McGowan.s Canadian independent film shooting currently in northern Ontario and Brunswick. Cromwell joins fellow Oscar nominee and Canadian native Geneviève Bujold (Anne of the Thousand Days, The House of Yes) to tell the story of an elderly couple forced to battle local authorities as they try and construct a home. McGowan, who opened the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival with his Score: A Hockey Musical, has assembled a cast with deep Canadian roots. In addition to Bujold, Still features Canuck actors Rick Roberts, Julie Stewart and Jonathan Potts, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Representing America in the Great White Northern cast will be Campbell Scott. Anytime an indie can lure a marketable, awards-caliber star like Cromwell, it.s an instant boost to the production. This is McGowan.s fifth feature, and while he is a name in his ...

Well the Toronto International Film Festival has provided another incredible lineup again this year. Among the best of the fest is Steve McQueen’s Shame (so far the best of the year), Lynne Ramsay’s We Need To Talk About Kevin and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. Sadly I had to cut my trip short by three days, so I will be missing some key films, including Ben Wheatley’s Kill List, Bela Tarr’s Turin Horse and Bruce McDonald’s Hard Core Logo 2. We still have plenty of reviews to come in the next few days so make sure to check back for more coverage.
Luckily for me I dodged all the movies that received unanimous negative feedback. Perhaps the six films that have been panned the most by critics and audiences alike are, Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz, Guy Maddin’s Keyhole, Madonna’s W.E., Joel Schumacher...

Starting with last September's Tiff Festival opener Score: A Hockey Musical, it would seem Canada's unofficial pasttime is making its way into the entertainment spotlight in a big way. What started as a one-off last year has bloomed into a full-fledged celebration as not one, not two but Three hockey films made their debut tonight as part of the prestigious annual film fest. Perhaps the biggest of the three film debuts is director Michael Dowse's Goon. Featuring Canadian actor and co-writer Jay Baruchel alongside Seann William Scott and Liev Schreiber, the film follows a bouncer who, shunned by his brainy family, decides to take on the leadership of a team of under performing misfits.

What happens Bollywood meets the biggest icon of Canadian culture, that is hockey? Find it out on September 30 when the comedy Breakaway hits Canadian theatres.
As seen in the trailer, the film takes place in a suburb of Toronto in a Punjabi family. Rajveer Singh (Vinay Virmani) dreams to be a hockey star and he plays in an amateur team made of Canadians of Punjabi heritage. Rajveer even tries to convince a white man (Rob Lowe) to coach his team.
However, things are complicated for Rajveer. His father (Anupam Kher) doesn't want his son to play hockey. Moreover, Rajveer is in love with his coach's sister, Melissa (Camilla Belle). Unfortunately, Melissa isn't necessarily attracted by hockey players.
The film also stars Canadian comedian Russell Peters, Noureen DeWulf, Akshay Kumar, Guggi, Sakina Jaffrey, Al Mukadam, Pamela Sinha, Ludacris and Lee Rumohr.

The themes of “coming of age” and “staying true to one’s self” on screen are as American as white bread. Score: A Hockey Musical (as you can tell from it’s title) is as Canadian as a box of Tim-Bits. The film knows exactly what it is, it’s not funded by the National Film Board, whose sensibilities lean more towards documentary and art films, but Telefilm Canada. It’s not so much a propaganda film as it is a heritage film.
The term heritage film is commonly associated with French films that deal with the effects of colonialism. If all of the colonies are in effect “French” the question of what is French culture is raised. Canada considers itself more of a mosaic, and includes government sponsorship of cultural heritage events and programs embracing the individuality of immigrant cultures. Score embraces with some self parody the heritage of hockey,...

After Saint Ralph and One Week, Canadian director Michael McGowan dabbles into commercial cinema with Score: A Hockey Musical. The result: be prepared to roll your eyes.
In a Toronto where people often sing by dialoguing, Farley Gordon (Noah Reid) is raised and home-schooled by green, pacifist and vegan parents (Marc Jordan and Olivia Newton-John). Even though Farley has never played in an organized hockey league, Farley excels at this game. Obviously, this dismays his parents who hate team sports. One day, the owner of the Blades (Stephen McHattie), a junior team from Brampton, recruits Farley after he had seen him play hockey on an outdoor rink. Despite his parents' objection, Farley rises to the challenge and becomes, overnight, a national sensation. Besides, some TV analysts consider Farley as "the next one".

Olivia Newton-John hasn’t made a feature film in a decade. So why did the Australian darling of 1970s and ’80s song-and-dance pics like Grease and Xanadu choose a little Canadian film about hockey to make her return?
Newton-John was on a stopover at the L.A. airport — on her way from Australia, where she was awarded the Order of Australia, and checked in on the cancer and wellness centre she’s building there, to her home in Florida — when she explained why she’s playing the hippie-dippie, pacifist mother of a hockey phenom in next month’s Score: A Hockey Musical.

The Toronto Film Festival is in full swing, and ReelzChannel correspondent Matt Mauro is there covering the range of blockbusters and indies, as well as blogging the event. Starting tonight, you can see our coverage on Hollywood Dailies. The list of 258 movies with premieres and showings during the 10-day festival includes The Town, Black Swan, 127 Hours, Conviction, and Hereafter. And since this is Canada, the opening night movie was the "high-schtick" Score: A Hockey Musical, with a cast that includes Nelly Furtado and Olivia Newton John.

In it's 35th year, Tiff is bringing Canadian back and kicking off the yearly movie fest with a homegrown film for its Gala Thursday opener. This year that honour falls to Michael McGowan's ode to our national pasttime (in song), Score: A Hockey Musical.
Starring rising Canadian youngster Noah Reid, the film follows seventeen-year old hockey prodigy Farley (Reid). Farley loves to play shinny with the local rink rats and soon finds himself signed to a major hockey league contract, where he achieves instant stardom, throwing him into a world of hype. Farley soon finds that hockey fame comes with a price, including the expectation to fight. Throughout it all he has to juggle his relationships with his hippie parents (Olivia Newton-John and Marc Jordan) and his childhood best friend, Eve (Allie MacDonald). There are men in jerseys, women in toques, and cameo appearances by notable Canucks like Nelly Furtado,...

Toronto -- The Toronto International Film Festival dropped the puck on its 35th edition Thursday night with "Score: A Hockey Musical," a homegrown movie that puts Canada's national game to music.
"The Mighty Ducks" worked for Disney, so Toronto organizers this year opted for high-schticking over high art, with Michael McGowan's campy tale about hockey players spontaneously bursting into song as they fight and fall in love.
McGowan led his cast up the opening-night red carpet outside Roy Thomson Hall, including Olivia Newton-John, who plays a hockey mom in "Score" and showed up in a leopard-skin gown, Nelly Furtado and newcomer Noah Reid, who plays a gifted hockey player who finds stardom on the ice has a price -- the need to drop the gloves to get to the top.
Being Canadian, "Score" takes a sideswipe at violence by urging pacifism, on and off the ice.

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

August 15 has come and gone with no news about the actors' contracts getting picked up for a second season or any word on what Syfy is thinking these days, but with the cast appearing in about a gazillion other things this fall, the hiatus blues should be getting easier.
If you're in New York some time between September and January, you can catch a short film, Untitled, with Eric Stoltz starring, at MoMA (see article.)
No release date has been set yet for his last feature, Fort McCoy (pic left), but IMDb still says 2010, so fingers crossed.
And this is still unconfirmed, but an extras casting director tweeted yesterday that our daddy Graystone will direct one of the new episodes of Glee. If true, the episode should air in the first half of the season. The show returns on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 8 on Fox.

From the hockey rink to a TV screen near you, Toronto native Noah Reid, who stars in Tiff 2010's opening film Score: A Hockey Musical, has nabbed the lead role in SyFy's upcoming 90-minute pilot "Three Inches," an action-adventure show with a side of superhero.
Reid stars as Walter Spackman, a daydreamer who gets struck by lightning and discovers he has a supernatural power that isn't all that super after all. He can move objects with his mind (yay!) but only by three inches (boo!). The series is also set to star James Marsters ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Naoko Mori ("Torchwood") and Stephanie Jacobsen ("Melrose Place").

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. We want it to be a challenge to you [the audience] to see if you can sit and watch it."

Toronto -- Look for American talent to light up Canadian acquisition titles at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
As Canadian indie movies increasingly cast Hollywood stars as boxoffice draws, Toronto organizers on Tuesday unveiled a Canuck movie lineup dominated by imported stars performing alongside local talent.
Toronto booked a gala slot at Roy Thomson Hall for Jonathan Sobol's "A Beginners Guide to Endings," which stars Harvey Keitel, Scott Caan and Wendy Crewson, and a world premiere for Jacob Tierney's "Good Neighbours," a Montreal-set thriller that stars Scott Speedman, Emily Hampshire and Jay Baruchel.
U.S. and other foreign talent figures in the mix for "A Night for Dying Tigers," the Terry Miles drama starring Jennifer Beals and Gil Bellows, while another Canuck drama, Ed Gass-Donnelly's "Small Town Murder Songs," is top-lined by Swedish actor Peter Stormare, Jill Hennessy ("Law and Order"), Aaron Poole and Martha Plimpton.

We should find a slew of internationally preemed Canadian titles and some fresh Canuck produce in Tiff's "Canada Day" announcement. In tomorrow's press conference, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Michael Dowse's "Fubar" sequel joining already selected films Michael McGowan's Score: A Hockey Musical and Barney's Version, and Tiff programmer/Quebec-based film critic Martin Bilodeau probably didn't have to do much convincing to secure Maxime Giroux's Jo pour Jonathan (Locarno), Denis Villeneuve's Incendies (Venice) and Xavier Dolan's Les Amours Imaginaires (Cannes). I'll update the selections on this page tomorrow, in the mean time, here are some stills from the four mentioned films above. When the Toronto International Film Festival announced yesterday that this year's opening night film would be a hockey musical, I don't think I'm the only one who wondered if it was supposed to be a joke. I mean, don't get me wrong, Tiff is a great showcase for Canadian culture and talent, but this is the same painfully obvious crap that has been representing our film and television industry for years. Plus... a sports musical? As funny and ironic as it might seem, this is a movie that will never find an audience. And yet I have to admit to being a little bit curious. Now that a trailer has turned up online, my curiosity has been satisfied... it's absolutely ridiculous. Score: A Hockey Musical is written and directed by Michael McGowan, the same guy who did One Week, the indie drama starring Joshua Jackson as a young man who...
