Aaron is joined by David Blakeslee and Matt Gasteier as they take a detour from Criterion to talk about art music in general. We tie it to the label by doing a bracket challenge for the best Criterion music on disc, but we also talk about our personal experiences and tastes in music, and have a short debate about whether rock is dead. We include some Criterion news and FilmStruck, including Peter Becker’s interview and some recent Oop titles on streaming.

For its twenty-fifth anniversary, Alexandre Rockwell’s 1992 Sundance winner “In the Soup” is asking for a big gift — but a necessary one. Indie distributor Factory 25 has now launched a crowdfunding campaign to finance the repair and preservation of the film, aiming to make it available digitally and on Blu-ray for the first time.
And while the allure of catching the pioneering feature — the one that beat out “Reservoir Dogs” at the lauded festival, no less — is compelling enough on its own, the real reason for the urgency of the campaign is something else entirely: without this restoration, the film will likely no longer exist. The only existing archival print of the feature is badly damaged, and without the addition of crowdfunded financing, Grady will be unable to restore the film.

Paramount Pictures is moving Sherlock Gnomes from its scheduled January 12 wide release date to March 23. The pic is a follow-up to 2011 animated hit Gnomeo and Juliet. Johnny Depp is voicing the title character, with other stars including James McAvoy and Emily Blunt. Sherlock now goes up against Paramount's Action Point, Fox's animated Anubis, Lionsgate/Summit's Robin Hood, Fox Searchlight's animated Isle of Dogs and Fox's untitled Dwa/Blue Sky release. The Playlist is reporting that Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson’s newly announced stop-motion animation, has found a home at Fox Searchlight.
A vague 2018 release date has been set, and the announcement heralds something of reunion between the filmmaker and Fox Searchlight following The Darjeeling Limited and 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. But Wes Anderson’s latest creative venture is more akin to the director’s work on Fantastic Mr. Fox, given its stop-motion nature, and though plot details are being kept firmly under lock and key, we now understand Isle of Dogs takes place in Japan and centers on a young boy’s search to find his missing canine.
But this is a Wes Anderson joint, meaning that viewers can surely look forward to a quirky, touching adventure that is anything but ordinary. Adding a touch of the extraordinary to Isle of Dogs is the movie’s ensemble cast,...

Yesterday, director Wes Anderson announced the title and voice cast of his new film “Isle of Dogs,” his first since 2014’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” as well as a brief glimpse of the film and a special contest to voice a character in the film. Now, Fox Searchlight Pictures announced that it has acquired the worldwide rights to “Isle of Dogs,” which will be produced in London by Indian Paintbrush. They have also released some minor plot details: the film is set in Japan and follows a boy’s odyssey in search of his dog. It will be Anderson’s second animated film following “Fantastic Mr. Fox.”

Yesterday director Wes Anderson officially announced his stop-motion animated film project, Isle of Dogs. Today we learned that Fox Searchlight picked up the distribution rights to the film, and they offered us our first plot details for the film in a very brief synopsis that says the film is a Japan-set tale that follows “a boy’s odyssey in search of his dog.”
This means that the boy featured in the teaser poster will be the main character of the film, and I'm sure Anderson plans on taking him on a crazy adventure. If you look at the image in the poster, you can see he's been beaten up a bit. In a joint statement Fox Searchlight presidents, Nancy Utley and Steve Gilula, said:

Less than a month after releasing his holiday-themed short film for H&M, Wes Anderson has gifted us another charming video that takes place in cramped spaces with distinct color patterns. But this time, it's to announce the official title of his newest animated animal caper - it's Isle of Dogs and, like Fantastic Mr. Fox, it's shooting in England - as well as the laundry list of actors that will comprise his next sprawling ensemble. On top of previously announced cast members Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum, and Edward Norton (who pops up in the announcement tape as comic relief), we knew to expect Anderson regulars such as Tilda Swinton and Harvey Keitel to make the cut but fresh names such as Yoko Ono, Courtney B. Vance, and Greta Gerwig are certainly cause for excitement. Hopefully the animated canines they voice will receive luckier fates than most dogs do in the Anderson cinematic universe.

After checking into Wes Anderson’s 2014 Oscar-winner, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fox Searchlight has acquired worldwide rights to the filmmaker’s upcoming Isle Of Dogs. Indian Paintbrush is currently producing the film in London and Anderson yesterday surprised the internet when he released a video announcing the start of production and the movie’s all-star cast. The stop-motion animated pic will reteam Budapest Hotel collaborators Anderson, Scott Rudin, Steven Rales and…...

On the heels of the announcement video that Wes Anderson and crew had begun production of his new animated film, Isle of Dogs, we’ve now learned when we’ll be able to see it. Following the hit that was The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fox Searchlight has returned to the Wes Anderson business as they’ve picked up the worldwide rights to the film, produced by Indian Paintbrush. As we predicted yesterday, it won’t see a release until 2018, due to the meticulous process of stop-motion animation.
We also have the first brief plot synopsis, which is that the Japan-set tale follows “a boy’s odyssey in search of his dog.” It can therefore be concluded that the first teaser poster (seen below) shows off our main character, who is among the voice cast, including F. Murray Abraham, Bob Balaban, Bud Cort, Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig, Jeff Goldblum, Akira Ito,...

Yesterday we got a seasonal surprise with the first peek at Wes Anderson‘s upcoming animated movie “Isle Of Dogs,” but it looks like we’ll have to hold onto that clip for a while because the movie is still quite a way off from hitting cinemas.
Fox Searchlight has announced today they’ve reteamed with the director following “The Darjeeling Limited” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and picked up the worldwide rights to “Isle Of Dogs.” Thus far, plot details have been kept under wraps, but it’s now revealed that the movie is set in Japan and follows a boy’s odyssey in search of his dog.

This is what we’ve been waiting for.
It’s safe to say that as soon as 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox ended we all needed more Wes Anderson anthropomorphic stop-motion magic on the big screen. Sure, in the meantime we’ve enjoyed Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and, most recently, a delightful Christmas short for H&M but you know what all those things aren’t? Charming stop-motion animals voiced by an ensemble cast of the industry’s best and brightest.
Now, we’ve known for about a year now that Anderson’s next project was going to a stop-motion film about dogs. This is incredibly exciting. It’s also incredibly interesting, as dogs haven’t fared well in Wes Anderson films. Cats neither, now that we think about it. (Rip Buckley, Snoopy, and Jeff Goldblum’s cat.) We haven’t had much other news but guess what, Christmas came early because we’ve now got...

Wes Anderson just started shooting his next movie, Isle of Dogs, this week, and he's already got some footage to share. Of course, this is another stop-motion effort, like his Fantastic Mr. Fox, so the clip is barely a second long. In it, we meet Rex, a dog who'll be voiced by Edward Norton, and whom is apparently one of the main characters. You can find that footage within a new video of Anderson introducing the animated feature and naming the incredible voice cast, including Norton, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Jeff Goldblum, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Yoko Ono and Greta Gerwig. Norton also literally pops his head in to help out with the sneak peek. The video isn't just to promote Isle of Dogs. This is also an...

Bringing an end to months of heated speculation, Wes Anderson has confirmed his new stop-motion animation to be Isle of Dogs, and the esteemed director is giving one lucky fan the chance to voice a minor character in the finished film.
But more on that later. Isle of Dogs stands as the director’s first foray behind the lens since 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, and the fact that Anderson’s new creative venture is stop-motion in nature has already drawn comparisons to the filmmaker’s work on Fantastic Mr. Fox. Plot details may be thin on the ground, but you’ll be able to get a fleeting glimpse of what we assume to be one of the leading canines via the video above, where Wes Anderson outlines Isle of Dogs with regular cohort Edward Norton.
Speaking of which, the ensemble cast that Anderson has assembled here is something to marvel,...
