The power of Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary “4 Little Girls” (now streaming on HBO Max) is all in the title. The film recounts the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, a pivotal moment of the Civil Rights Movement, but Lee’s mission isn’t to play professor and provide a history lesson. With “4 Little Girls,” Lee does away with relegating the four Black girls who died in the bombing to footnotes in history books. Instead, he amplifies the beauty of their short lives with such piercing intimacy that to watch the documentary is to say their names and never forget them: Addie May Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, and Carole Rosamond Robertson.

Spike Lee has a genuine affection for Mike Tyson that shone through when the pair spoke to the press together at the TCA summer press tour in July about "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth," a filmed version of Tyson's Broadway one-man show slated to debut on HBO on Saturday, November 16th. Lee, who directed the special, called Tyson "the most honest human being I've met in my life," and the first teaser, below, suggests a somber tone in which the former heavyweight champion will open up about his storied career and troubled history. "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth" is just the latest in a string of HBO projects Lee's worked on -- in addition to "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts" and "If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise," Lee had boxing drama pilot "Da Brick" at the premium network, though it didn't make it to series.

For every "Girl 6," "She Hate Me" or "Miracle at St. Anna" in filmmaker Spike Lee's oeuvre, there's not only a great feature to offset it ("25th Hour," "He Got Game," "Inside Man"), but several fantastic documentaries ("4 Little Girls," "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts" "If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise") as well. One could even argue if Lee's feature career got a little uneven later in the game (which is still very debatable), his documentaries -- some of them his best work, period -- never faltered.
So it's great to see the always productive filmmaker has two more documentaries in the works. The first one is a 25th anniversary documentary on Michael Jackson's Bad album (remember Martin Scorsese directed that video) and another called, "Go Brazil Go" which is meant to cover Brazil's rise to economic prominence from the eyes of...

Right on the indignation of the Forbes List of the Highest Paid Film Actors, comes the fresh hell of the TV Guide Highest Paid TV Actors List. Just like the Forbes list, it's chock-a-block full of middling talent/great talent who have settled for mediocrity. You can read more over at The Hollywood Reporter, but here are a few of the staggering figures to punch the highlights outta your hair:
The highest paid actor in television is this goober, right here. I like him more than some, but he's still a goober. $700,000 per episode of "Two And A Half Men." Mariska Hargitay earns $350,000 an episode of "Law & Order: Sports Utility Vehicle." I hear she's pretty confident in her sexuality. Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor-Allen and Keifer "I Used To Make $400,000/episode as Jack Bauer" Sutherland will each be pulling in $125,000 an episode on their new shows. And, finally, Simon "Blight...

Over the past few years Spike Lee has been busy in the documentary arena with films like Kobe Doin' Work and If God is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise, his follow-up to When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. However, the filmmaker hasn't taken on a narrative feature film since the 2008 war drama Miracle at St. Anna. However, this morning, Lee surprised everyone with an update on Twitter talking about the first day of shooting on a new Spike Lee joint today. At first, no one was sure what film he was talking about, but thankfully BlackFilm (via The Playlist and Shadow and Act) have unearthed some details on the project. Lee's new film is called Red Hook Summer, and while we don't know too many details on the plot, the story will follow an adult from Atlanta who spends a summer in the Red Hook section...

Spike Lee, it seems, has little regard for Hollywood. Not film, mind you -- as one of America's most celebrated auteurs, he clearly has a grasp for the form that few can match. But when it comes to the business side of things, he's got a few bones to pick.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, Lee sounded off on the way the industry's awards process works, as well as the way actors and actresses are treated. It's no wonder so many have personal problems, whether it's with marriage, drugs, depression or otherwise.
“You’re out there buck-naked and that is hard," Lee said. "The reason why actors are f*cked up; can you imagine having a job where someone is, ‘No, no, no. Your butt’s too big. Your heads to big. You’re too skinny. Your nose is too big?'”

FX's "Justified," TNT's "Men of a Certain Age," and the CBS drama "The Good Wife" were among the 39 recipients of the 70th Annual Peabody Awards, announced today by the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Joining those three critically acclaimed dramas on a wide-ranging list of radio, television, and web-based winners recognized by the Peabody Board as representing the best in electronic media were HBO's epic miniseries "The Pacific," as well as the premium channel's Emmy-award winning original movie "Temple Grandin." The "Degrassi" franchise received its first Peabody in its 30-plus year history with a two-part episode of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" that focused upon the struggles of a transgender teenager.
In total, PBS picked up nine Peabodys among its various scripted programs in addition to awards for news and documentary series, including for Masterpiece/Mystery!'s "Sherlock: A Study in Pink," a featuring 21st-century update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective, and "Great Performances: Macbeth," starring Patrick Stewart in version that reimagines the Scottish Play in an alternate setting that resembles revolutionary Russia. Among the documentary winners were "Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Injun," which aired on "Independent Lens," and the American Masters features "LennonNYC" and "Elia Kazan: A Letter to Elia," a cinematic love letter as presented by Martin Scorsese.
"For 70 years the Peabody Award has defined excellence in electronic media," said Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards, in this morning's press release. "This list of Peabody recipients continues the commitment of the University of Georgia and the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the stewards of the award. With that commitment, we challenge media makers and distributors to reach higher, try harder and be ever mindful of their central role in public life."
HBO won seven Peabodys, the lion's share of for its documentaries, including "12th & Delaware," "For Neda," "Burma VJ," Spike Lee's "If God is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise," and the HBO sports doc "Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals."
The list of 39 winners represents a record number of Peabodys awarded in a single year, selected by a 16 member board consisting of "television critics, industry practitioners and experts in culture and the arts," according to a UGA press release. Keep reading for the full list of Peabody winners.

By George Alexander Thank God for Spike Lee. I must admit I had reservations about Lee's second post-Katrina documentary film for HBO If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise before seeing it. I grew up in Mobile, Alabama, another Gulf Coast city, and we've always looked at New Orleans as a big sister: our town was actually the first capital of the Louisiana Territory and is home of the original Mardi Gras (look it up). That said, as an NPR junkie I had already overdosed on its phenomenal Katrina coverage along with CNN's back in 2005. That along with my numerous calls home to friends and family for up-to-the-minute updates after the storm, I was not particularly blown away by When the Levees Broke --- Lee's Emmy and Peabody Award-winning first post-Katrina documentary. Though it was smart...

Spike Lee has claimed that his documentary If God Is Willing And Da Creek Don't Rise shows the tenacity of the people of New Orleans. The filmmaker, whose new project is a follow-up to his 2006 film When The Levees Broke: A Requiem In Four Acts, also said that as the city has suffered from Hurricane Katrina and the recent Bp oil spill, the New Orleans Saints deserved their Super Bowl victory this year. Lee told Vibe: "New Orleans is not a finished project. We knew we wanted to revisit the city and some of the people we met (more)...

Even though the TCA Summer press tour wrapped up yesterday, I'm still in Beverly Hills awaiting my flight back to the wilds of New Jersey. But before I leave, I wanted to talk about HBO's presentation that concluded the tour, mainly for who was there... and who might be there in 2011.
HBO always presents their part of the tour like a broadcast network would, with an executive session and star-studded panels. And, while this summer's lineup had some pretty good star power, I can only imagine what next winter's panels are going to look like. Why? Because HBO showed clips of David Milch's 'Luck,' starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte, the dark 'Mildred Pierce' miniseries starring Kate Winslet, and a fifteen-second clip of 'Game of Thrones,' which lit up Twitter feeds everywhere.

Spike Lee's 4-hour HBO documentary If God Is Willing And Da Creek Don't Rise, premiering August 23-24 about the lingering impact of Hurricane Katrina, was already done shooting when Bp's oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico. "We went back seven times after the Bp spill to get more footage," he told the TV critics at his HBO session. "It's really eye-opening the power that Bp has. There's no way it should be dictating what's going on. But it shows the power of the company." Spike said "the connective tissue is greed. I don't care hoew many scientists Bp buys, that oil is still there.
