Grief is a complicated emotion. People say that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, but what if you can go back and change the past? In today’s Aporia trailer, Judy Greer plays a mother devastated by loss who alters time and space to change the course of history. However, manipulating the laws of time is dangerous, and the results could be worse than the event you hoped to change.
In the Aporia trailer, Greer’s Sophie learns about a secret time machine built by her husband’s best friend, played by Payman Maadi. Sophie thinks she can bring her husband back after he dies in a tragic drunk-driving accident, but the consequences of her actions could lead to losing her teenage daughter or worse.
Jared Moshe directs from his own script, with Greer, Edi Gathegi, Payman Maadi, and Faithe Herman starring as the main cast.

Louis Tomlinson has just released his new album, Faith in the Future, and he recently spoke with Et Canada’s Morgan Hoffman about his second solo LP since he and the other members of One Direction went their separate ways.
While discussing the new album, Tomlinson opened up about a very special moment he experienced recently, when his 6-year-old son, Freddie, got to see his dad perform in concert for the very first time.
“Oh, it was dead emotional. It was really, really, really nice. First time he’s been to see me like that,” said Tomlinson of his son, whom he shares with ex Briana Jungwirth.
“And and for maybe the first four or five songs I was trying to find in the crowd, but I couldn’t spot him,” he added. “And then I finally found out where he was and as soon as I saw him, I was welling up.

Some obligatory credit is due to those ambitious (or, depending on the results, naive) enough to establish their name as a feature film director in 2017 on the basis of a genre-faithful western. The hazards of such an approach are not insignificant: take an earnest stab at crafting a film that belongs to a genre with an 80-year-long development trajectory — one that peaked as a self-contained narrative form well over 50 years ago, and has since hypertrophied into a self-aware meditation upon itself, replete with the postmodern, self-reflexive interrogations of the black-and-white moral worldview that forms the very meat-and-bones of the original films — and you run the risk of succumbing to unintentional parody in apparent disregard towards the historical developments of the genre you hope to submit to your vision. On the other hand, when executed with a slight, unostentatious nod to history and just the right touch of contemporary remixing, the rewards can be bountiful.

Martha (Bowen) and her husband Heck (Call) are living on a homestead Martha’s father purchased on the rural New Mexico frontier and struggle to make ends meet. When a mining company expresses interest in buying their land, Martha and Heck see their ticket to a better life. Their hopeful plans are soon complicated when...

For the past twelve years, the Independent Spirit Awards have been held the night before the Oscars, and although the two sets of nominees sometimes overlap, traditionally the Spirit Awards end up honouring most of the films that the Academy ignores. This year things might be a little bit different, however, as Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist ended up taking home a handful of the major Spirit Awards including Best Feature, Best Director and Best Male Lead. As far as I know, the Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards have only picked the same Best Picture once before: Oliver Stone's Platoon in 1986. Christopher Plummer also won for Best Supporting Male, while Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) won for Best Female Lead. Is this all a sign of what's to come tomorrow night? There are at least a few Spirit Award winners who won't be repeating at the Academy...

Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist" was the big winner at the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The black-and-white silent film took home Best Feature, Director for Hazanavicius, Best Male Lead for Jean Dujardin, and Best Cinematography for Guillaume Schiffman.
In the performance categories, Michelle Williams took home the Best Female Lead award for her Marilyn Monroe portrayal in "My Week with Marilyn." Shailene Woodley, snubbed by the Academy for her memorable performance as George Clooney's daughter in "The Descendants," won Best Supporting Actress while Oscar frontrunner, Christopher Plummer, received the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in "Beginners."
Held on Santa Monica Beach and hosted by Seth Rogen, the 27th Film Independent Spirit Awards will be broadcast by IFC at 10 p.m. Pst/Est.

Hardly a surprise to anyone, The Artist dominated the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards, winning for Best Feature, Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Cinematography (Guillaume Schiffman). There were some complaints in the Twitter-verse as Penelope Anne Miller accepted the awards for The Artist up until Hazanavicius and the rest of The Artist team arrived five minutes before Hazanavicious was named Best Director. The reason? They'd just landed at Lax after flying in from France where The Artist won six awards at the Cesar Awards, France's equivalent of the Oscars, last night. A police escort managed to get them to the Spirits just in time for their third win of the night... also in time to take the stage to accept Best Feature Film. The Artist went into the Spirits with Take Shelter as the leading nominees with both receiving five nominations each. Take Shelter, however, only ended up going home...

This weekend isn't just about the Oscars, for the record. Saturday night, as is traditional, sees the warm-up for the big show with the 2012 Spirit Awards, Film Independent's antidote to the Academy Awards, intended to honor the best of independent cinema. With recent winners of the top prize including "Juno," "The Wrestler," "Precious" and "Black Swan," they've provided the opportunity for films that are perhaps a little too dark, small or offbeat to win Best Picture from the Academy the chance to grab some gold.
This year, things may be a little different, with oscar front-runner "The Artist" nominated in multiple categories, so we could end up seeing the two ceremonies mirroring each other more closely than ever. But will that actually be the case? True to their name, the Independent Spirits have been known to go their own way. We've run down our predictions below, and stay tuned for...

Fresh off a big double win at the Gothams (where it won Best Feature and Best Ensemble), Mike Mills' Beginners has nabbed four nominations for the 27th Indie Spirit Awards tying with three other Best Feature hopefuls in Jeff Nichol's Take Shelter, The Descendants and Cannes preemed, Drive. However the four were outmatched by Michel Hazanavicius's The Artist which garnered five noms in Best Feature, Best Director, Best Male Lead, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography categories. Martha Marcy May Marlene grabbed four noms as well if you add the Upcoming Producer award along with the three noms in the Best First Feature, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor categories. At a ceremony in Los Angeles this morning, Anthony Mackie and Kate Beckinsale announced the nominees for the 2012 Spirit Awards, which will be handed out on IFC on Saturday, February 25. And one night after it scored Best Film and Best Ensemble at the Gotham Awards, "Beginners" built more awards season momentum by landing four Spirit Award nominations: Best Feature, Best Director (Mike Mills), Best Screenplay (Mike Mills), and Best Supporting Male (Christopher Plummer). That put it one nomination behind the two biggest winners of the morning, "The Artist" and "Take Shelter," which each received five nominations. "Drive," "The Descendants," and "Martha Marcy May Marlene" also received four nominations a piece.

December is almost here and awards seasons is finally getting underway with a number of groups announcing their nominees today including the Gotham Independent Film Awards, New York Film Critics Circle, and the Independent Spirit Awards. Of these, the Spirit Awards are probably the most significant in that they can have a small influence on the Oscars, although they usually just end up honouring a lot of the stuff that the Academy ignores. This year, however, there are quite a few well-known nominees including at least three that received a wide theatrical release (50/50, Drive and Midnight in Paris). The movies that seem to be getting the most recognition, however, are Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist and Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter. Both received five nominations, while Drive and Martha Marcy May Marlene were also recognized with four nominations each. I'm a bit surprised that Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris...

The Spirit Awards has long aimed to pay tribute to the little films that often unfairly fail to grab Oscar notice. (It’s no coincidence that the Spirit Awards telecast is traditionally held the day before the Oscars ceremony each year.) Of course, with the Academy’s expansion to 10 Best Picture nominees, the past few years have shown an increase in the amount of crossover between the two award shows. Last year both the Academy Awards and the Spirit Awards bestowed nominations (if not awards) to Black Swan, Winter’s Bone, 127 Hours, The King’s Speech, The Kids Are All Right,...

It's an award-based morning as not only were the Gotham Awards handed out last night, the New York Film Critics are in the middle of handing out their awards right now (that list is coming shortly) and now the nominations for Film Independent's 2012 Independent Spirit Awards were announced as Michael Hazanavicius' The Artist and Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter led the pack with five nominations each. The two leaders, however, were followed closely by Beginners, The Descendants, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Drive with four. Of those six, only Martha Marcy May Marlene wasn't nominated for Best Feature as it was replaced by 50/50, which ended up with three nominations. Of the films nominated for Best Feature, my gut tells me it's a battle between The Artist and The Descendants and this just may end up being the first sign as to which of those two may end up being the Oscar favorite.

Finola Geraghty's drama could move a million hearts, but it's gone straight to DVD. Silver Tongues charmed only the San Sebastián film festival. When will UK indies get the distribution they deserve?
Showbusiness is unfair, cinema is unfair, life is unfair, and it can be a mystery as to how some movies manage to get picked up for theatrical distribution and some don't. This year, I've had the experience of seeing two really interesting low-budget films which got the cold or coldish shoulder. Silver Tongues is an excellent mystery thriller by the young British director Simon Arthur, influenced by David Mamet. Arthur couldn't get any takers for his film in Britain, but it was shown at the San Sebastián film festival. Well, good for San Sebastián, and shame on Blighty for not seeing its worth. It was really good, and I'm hopeful it'll get into cinemas here.
Now I've just watched Come on Eileen,...

Greece may be on the verge of financial collapse, but that hasn't stopped its film festival from going ahead. Its artistic director hopes it may even create jobs
Reading the reports from most film festivals, it would be easy to forget that the world is in the grip of economic crisis. Brad and Angelina take their familiar spot on the red carpet in Cannes, gorgeous George beams yet again from the deck of his Venice water taxi , glamour and escapism still rule. These festivals pay lip service to the locals, but their main concern is image.
This year's Athens international film festival, however, has had a different outlook. As its artistic director Orestis Andreadakis puts it: "We want to give hope."
Greece, of course, is getting it in the neck; not only is its economy in shreds, but it is being paraded as the pariah of Europe, the only country...

San Sebastian Film Festival Day Two
If the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain, then I must surely have been the ugliest woman in San Sebastian today, as I seemed to get caught in the periodic torrential downpours every time I set foot outside of a cinema. It was the sort of day that tricks you into thinking you need a T-shirt, only to suddenly spring a deluge on you the minute you find yourself away from anywhere to hide. Tricks were also the name of the game in Silver Tongues. Directed by Pollockshields-born Simon Arthur, this 'con artist'...

The Spanish film festival brings interesting new fare from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's chiller Intruders to Martin Scorsese's Harrison tribute Living in the Material World
The San Sebastián film festival began in a persistent shower of unseasonable rain, and with a semi-Hollywood-ised English language movie from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who made the excellent Intacto: a reasonably scary ghost story called Intruders. Clive Owen plays a troubled and protective dad – he is danger of becoming a little stereotyped in these roles – with a rather implausible blue-collar job sitting astride steel girders on buildings way up in the air, fixing rivets. His 12-year-old daughter has become weirdly obsessed with a creature with no face ("Hollowface"), having discovered an unfinished story about this character in a child's handwriting stuffed in a tree near her grandparents' house. She is finishing this story for a school project and in doing so appears to...

The 17th annual Slamdance Film Festival has handed out awards to 10 films out of the 83 movies that screened this year. A few films received multiple awards in different categories and several of the winners will be given a limited theatrical release sponsored by Slamdance later this year.
Awards were organized in the sections: Grand Jury Awards, Audience Awards and Sponsored Awards. The documentary Bhopali, directed by Van Maximillian Carlson about the effects of the horrific 1984 Union Carbide gas disaster, won both a Grand Jury and an Audience award. Another documentary, Shunka by Cj Gardella, won both an Audience and a Sponsored award.
Also, in addition to several winners, the Slamdance jury made several mentions to runners-up deserving special recognition. Those special jury notes are included in the full list of winners below.

The 17th annual Slamdance Film Festival is all set to run for eight days and nights Jan. 21-27. The festival is featuring a bold theme this year of “All Is Not Lost” where — due to the current devastating economic climate — Slamdance will donate 10% of ticket proceeds back to the filmmakers.
The fest is screening 14 feature films — 10 of which are in competition — and 8 feature documentaries, all of which are in competition. In addition, there will be 56 short films screening.
Plus, there are a couple of special screenings, including the Straight 8 event where anybody can register to receive a single roll of Super-8 film that they can use to direct their own in-camera edited mini-masterpiece. Also, on the 26th, there will be a special retrospective of the works of renegade ’60s filmmaker J.X. Williams.
The full film lineup is below, but for more information on the site please visit the official Slamdance website.

[1] Slamdance has officially announced the 2011 Feature Competition slate for the 17th Annual Slamdance Film Festival taking place January 21-27, 2011 in Park City, Utah. For those of you who don't know, the festival was founded in 1995 by filmmakers whose movies didn't get into Sundance, and has since become a yearly film festival spotlighting "emerging filmmaking talent and their new work." Slamdance touts that their festival is "programmed by filmmakers for filmmakers." While Sundance is still the big show in Park City, big filmmakers like Christopher Nolan (Memento), Marc Forster (Monster's Ball) and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) are often mentioned as Slamdance discoveries. There's just one word to describe horror at this year's Slamdance film festival -- Atrocious. No, really. There aren't a lot of fright films on the program, but the one clear offering is director Fernando Barreda Luna's thriller. More after the jump. TwitchFilm has the full lineup, which includes the Mexican/Spanish found-footage movie Atrocious (a probing look at the "Quintanilla Murder Investigation"), as well as genre offerings like Simon Arthur's Silver Tongues (another "dark thriller") and "experimental effort" The Beast Pageant. Slamdance runs January 21 through 27 in Park City, Utah.

The Slamdance Film Festival wasn't that far behind The Sundance Film Festival in releasing their film line-up, and it's a compelling mix of titles. For those of you who don't know, Slamdance is another film festival that is going on at the exact same time, and in the exact same place as Sundance, and that's in Park City Ut, from January 21-28th. Slamdance focuses more on genre type indie films.
Check out the list below and tell us what you think! Do any of you plan on attending? I always try to catch a few of these films while up up in Park City.

The line-up has been announced for the 2011 Slamdance Film Festival, and while we found only one true horror film on the list, there are a few others that seem to be genre-bending enough to merit mention here on Dread Central.
Slamdance, which is being presented again by Kodak, runs concurrently with the Sundance Film Festival, January 21-27, 2011 in Park City, Utah. As a year-round organization, Slamdance serves as a showcase for the discovery of new and emerging talent and is dedicated to the nurturing and development of new independent artists and their vision. Slamdance lives by its mantra: "By Filmmakers, For Filmmakers." No other festival is fully programmed by filmmakers, and for the 2011 Festival Slamdance received a record number of over 5,000 submissions.
Here are the narrative films in competition that should appeal to genre fans:
Atrocious – directed by Fernando Barreda Luna. (Mexico, Spain) World Premiere, 75 min (See trailer below)

With the complete Sundance lineup now out in public you had to know that Slamdance couldn't be far behind. And it wasn't. The complete list of competition selections for Slamdance 2011 was announced today and it's a compelling mix of titles.
On the genre front Fernando Barreda Luna's found footage shocker Atrocious is the festival's one true horror entry while Simon Arthur's Silver Tongues also sounds like it could delve into dark thriller territory. Experimental effort The Beast Pageant is probably worth a look as well and I've been hearing growing buzz about inner city crime moc doc Snow On The Bluff as well.
