Talented designer Ali Redcliffe works for ruthless fashionista Davina Bailey, who steals her staff's ideas and passes them off as her own, causing Ali to leave. She gets the chance to set up her own label with acerbic designer Marco Keriliak. However, in her first month with him she sees Davina take the credit for a dress she made for starlet Katy Travis to wear at an award ceremony. Ali is keen to design for heroic soldier Lynn Jones, whose autobiography was butchered to make a star vehicle for Katy but Marco - to further his and Ali's careers - wants Katy to wear the dress at the premiere of her film based on Lynn's book. However, when Davina forces Katy to wear one of her own,hideous, creations, Lynn steals the red carpet show in Ali's creation. Davina sends Ali flowers with a card which reads 'This is War', but Marco hides the card.

Investor Caroline Coburg promises Ali and Marco cash in return for a wedding dress, though she stipulates the use of a very stiff fabric made by her company - which Ali hates. Ali needs the money as Davina aims to sue her on trumped-up charges of stealing her designs, bribing Alex, Ali's gay flatmate, into helping her, though Marco gets wind of it, persuades Alex to do the right thing and blackmails Davina into backing off. Though Caroline withdraws her offer, designer friend Lydia comes up with the cash. Ali's love life with despatch rider Chris improves whilst another of her old workmates at Davina's, Mimi,starts an affair with married publisher Anthony Chatsworth.

Whilst Ali is at a launch party for designer and model Lydia, Marco tells her she needs to prepare a collection for submission for London Fashion Week. At the same time Lydia gets drunk and ends up on the front pages of tabloid rags, leading to her losing all her contracts. Davina puts out the word to stop Ali's dresses being made for Fashion Week, causing Marco to approach a sweat shop. Ali is appalled but Dorota, her Polish seamstress, saves the day by recruiting her friends to meet the deadline. Lydia wins back good publicity by hosting a charity auction, featuring one of Ali's creations. Despite efforts by Davina and her creepy friend, fashion journalist Mitchell Crompton to sabotage it, the auction is a huge success whilst Ali's dresses are accepted for Fashion week.

Alex accidentally spills a drink over Ali's new collection and,without telling her, takes them to Davina's for cleaning, leading Ali to think they were stolen. She manages to get another set together in time for London Fashion Week and Marco, as ever, saves the day by preventing Davina from passing off the dresses as her own. Ali ultimately forgives Alex, having thrown him out,and they make up. Mimi leaves Anthony when she becomes aware that he will never leave his wife for her and she becomes Ali's stylist. Chris, however, about to become a model, tells Ali they should call it a day.

The day of the catwalk show arrives and Davina deliberately plans her show to run at the same time as Ali's,though Marco ensures that the people who matter come to Ali's display which is judged a huge success. Ali's mother ,Christine,also turns up. She and Ali have not spoken since Christine re-married a controlling husband but Marco persuades her to stay and help,which she loves, forging a reconciliation with her daughter. Marco himself goes off with another girl,though,as does Chris,to Ali's dismay.

Love is in the air - for Mimi with new boyfriend, bar-owner Joel, and Ali when she accepts Chris's marriage proposal. Match-making Dorota books Ali and Marco into one room when they go to Paris to court influential buyer Sylvie Montrose, but nothing happens,sexually or professionally,as they miss Sylvie. Back in London Marco pushes hard and the visiting Sylvie is impressed,urging Davina to take Ali back as she is far more talented than Davina herself. Marco comes up with a compromise - Davina will be Ali's buyer and Davina admits to Ali the vendetta was against Marco, not her, for old grievances. Realising she and Marco are kindred spirits Ali breaks off the engagement to Chris but Marco, though he loves her, disappears after brokering the deal.
