Too shallow for it's setting
Ben_T_9 January 2024
Ofcourse I've only seen one episode so far and it's not unheard of for things to turn around really quickly, but I'm writing this now so that maybe the feedback would be considered by the creators.

I think there are basically two approaches to mainstream-ish cartoon comedy:

1) Flat premise in which surface level comedy happens (Simpsons, Family guy, etc.)

2) Deep-ish, specific setting, in which the deep-ish specific comedy can occur (R&M, Bojack, etc.)

This however, is a deep-ish specific setting with extremely flat, surface level humor.

I'm not sure whether it's just a very odd combination to me, a specific person, or if it truly doesn't work, but I do wish they would build up momentum/depth before the punchlines.

Not bad, I'll try and watch another episode when it comes out.

Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't sure at first, the opening scene was an indicator it was going to be filled with dark humor, which is fine but if that's what they were going to rely on for the entire series I felt it was going to get tedious rather quick. But it turned out it was fairly spread out, focusing mostly on the main protagonist and his quirks, if you can call them that, it's just one bizarre or unflattering character trait after another, so as this show progresses it might be a challenge to like him at all. One annoying thing that stuck out for me was how every single character that was introduced had to be just as if not more strange than the last. There are like no "normal" characters in this. So they are all going to compete for attention in scenes and it's really distracting and obvious they are trying really hard to make every single minute "funny" or a strange/weird kind of "funny" which isn't always and quite often if done too much just isn't humorous it's just desperately seeking laughs. I mean when they introduced the black partner who happens to be some strange cyborg I was about to say I had enough of this, I mean what in the hell is that adding to the story? Why not make him normal and then have some tragedy later on that he needs to be resurrected, they had his story shot out in one blip and there you go, there is that whole characters story-line done and gone. So now it's just going to be jokes about him being a cyborg and some "quirky" odd character habits to rely on. He's already as shallow of a character as you can get in this first episode, what is there to build on? I don't have high hopes for this, but will consider watching another episode.

All on Jon Hamm
MajBlade221 February 2024
Jon Hamm can't hide behind "He was just a voice actor". He knew this stank, stunk, and was roadkill before it hit the screen. He has to know that critics are going to ask him "why?" for next two weeks "why would you make this?". He will own this car wreck the rest of his career. Who? Who? Told him this was good writing? Funny? Nope. I guess that is the review Its not funny. Its weird and not in a good way. I think their trying to do Archer and the Venture brothers mishmash and it doesn't really work. There is some pop Easter eggs but the whole thing comes off and a mishmash of different adult animation in the archer mode but way, way, worse.

Comedies are supposed to be funny.. right?
info-617520 February 2024
What a train-wreck, I don't know where to begin. Well we can start with the fact that there's zero personality with the characters, every single one is stereotypical caricature of themselves. It would be a good idea if the comedy had any delivery or surprises at all, it's all just what you'd expect it to be - flat and over-done, like a pancake with mustard on it - there's no way you'd like it. The only redeeming quality of this show is the art-style and animation, which is great from start to end. About that, it wasn't easy to watch the first episode because the's nothing fun or surprising happening, reminds me of the "modern" Sam & Max games..

Why so serious?
annabeack17 March 2024
It's not Bob's Burgers or Futurama but if you're a fan of adult animation it's a good time! It's stupid funny and that's the purpose of adult animation. I promise if you need something mind numbing after a long day this will cure that. It has a woman raised by bears, an imaginary skeleton, treenises, and so much more!

Some characters are very try hard and the humor does fall flat so I can see why there are a lot of negative reviews but Jon Hamm and Alan Tudyk really make up for it. It has great potential so time will tell if the show will be a cult classic or a 2 season failure. Just give it a shot.

A new low standard
delaynomore12 March 2024
I love Jon but this is an absolute disaster.

There is nothing funny here. The jokes are so atrociously bad. It's like you are at a party and that nervous socially awkward kid came up to you to regale you with cringey unfunny jokes for half hour. That's the kind of torture this is.

The plot is bad and seems more like an afterthought. The plot is nothing more than a vacuous background for all the unfunny humor.

Honestly all the script writers need to go. If Jon wrote some of the jokes, then Jon need to fire himself.

The only thing this series is good for is as a case study for how not to do animated sitcom. This abomination is unsalvageable.

My stars are for that teacher guy
thereallucyd25 January 2024
Overall just kind of...meh. It has an interesting concept at first, however it never really connected. Jokes are thrown at you every second but the vast majority of them fall very, very flat and the characters are pretty much one-note. It feels very safe and corporate. Unfortunately that has become the status quo for adult animation, but just because I expect something doesn't mean I don't want it to change.

I've seen some call this the "adult version of Gravity Falls" but if that would entail annoying characters, outdated humor, and the ugly animation we've come to expect from Fox, I think I'll stick with the non-adult version. It's disappointing that in a medium with so much potential as animation, we are constantly getting samey shows like this. They may take a different approach, sure, but they end up at the same destination.

I don't doubt that the show gets better but I'm not in the mood to sit through more of it.

The ONLY thing I actually liked was that hot dude with the parrot. I cannot remember his name but I liked his cheekbones and voice quite a bit.

Dark, mysterious and funny
yzsnfcg8 January 2024
I'm enjoying this new fox domination addition, the characters are very fun and the world built surrounding it is unique and different. Always a big fan at each shows ability to create their own spot in the fox universe. Excited to see what this show will be able to bring for ideas, characters, etc. The voice actors are great choices too. Reminds me a lot of a adult version of gravity falls for its mysterious atmosphere and different approach compared to its other predecessors. Enjoy that it's more of a "horror"-esq. Type show as well. Very excited to see what comes each episode, and to get to know the characters further. Hope for this series to have great success!

I only watch because it's there, while it's here, looking forward to its cancellation.
niceguy-737-81294027 April 2024
Everything I've seen and read has suggested it's unanimous, that everyone finds this show sucks. I'm a little surprised to see some 9 and 10 star reviews, I suspect they're planted fakes to raise the average rating (which I'm surprising is as high as 5.8 out of 10 still, I didn't think they'd add THAT many fakes). I was also surprised to see IMDb list a second season, another review says it was renewed before the pilot aired! That's the only thing that makes sense. How foolish is that, to not even see how it does? Seems like some people (including network execs) just love Jon Hamm so much they assume this must be great. Me, never heard of him, never saw Mad Men - seemingly how everyone loves him. Only thing *I* saw was he had an ad campaign for SkipTheDishes, a Canada-only UberEats, all with a weird theme of him pretending to be a Canadian. Had a vibe we're supposed to recognize him, took ages before I discovered his name and that he's known from Mad Men.

This show seems to count on making EVERYONE weird with odd quirks to provide writing opportunities. One problem: They established these quirks in the pilot and never re-establish them, so people have to remember them from the pilot or understand them the rare time they come up. The main guy Flute (Jon Hamm) seems to have this magic ability to imagine the crime scene from clues, imaging the event in some virtual environment. They never establish if he's just super observant or he actually has a magic power. They don't even use it every episode, despite being the main character, and a show depicting his investigations! Otherwise he's rather dim, and without this ability he'd be a rather lacklustre detective. Seems to be referencing Inspector Clouseau from Pink Panther, somewhat lucking into solving cases. His son Stan has an imaginary friend, a bad influence skeleton with flaming eyes Mr. Flesh, borne from his deep emotional damage from both his parents regularly neglecting him. They never say again that Mr. Flesh is imaginary, merely use it on occasion and leave it to the viewers to remember or realize nobody else can see him. Flute has a mentor who's an inmate working as a teacher, clearly based heavily on Hannibal Lector in Silence Of The Lambs (if they let him work as a teacher on work release). His partner is Robocop if he was a big friendly schlub who lacks confidence. Or Cyborg from Justice League/Teen Titans with these modifications. Flute's ex/Stan's mom was raised by bears and has significant bear influences for no apparent reason. His boss is so attractive and charming he wears a parka all the time to lower his attractiveness and not get swarmed. THAT guy's boss (I'm a little fuzzy on the hierarchy) is a TALL overconfident woman who's a great believer in conspiracy theories and is highly unevolved (stuff like refusing to use recycled paper). Again, never mentioned but comes up once or twice, hopefully viewers remember. Oh, and the town of Grimsburg is cursed so LOTS of murders happen, again not mentioned outside of the pilot. (They stole the title sequence joke idea from Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, Great North and others, where here the town sign always has a different slogan based on all the murders).

TOO many gimmicks, not enough backing them up. I rather enjoy Mr. Flesh and the professor, both amusingly warped, not surprising both are voiced by the wonderful Alan Tudyk. Only reason I added 1 star. All the murders making it clearly aimed at adult viewers helps, but not enough to add any more stars. It really has seemed like this show is doomed, so I've been watching while it's here, but the confirmed second season makes me wonder if they can unconfirm and end this mess.

I didn't think I would ever give Jon Hamm a 1star. I was wrong.
Xavier_Stone9 January 2024
FYI, this animation has been greenlit for it's 2nd season before the pilot even aired. Some exec must have thought this is a guaranteed hit. It's not.

This animation is really hard to like, even if you're a Jon fan. There's just not enough substance here and I was unable to finish the pilot episode, mostly because it starts off with some good ol' toilet humor. (This stuff hasn't been funny for 4 decades.)

Some of the other characters are alright, I guess, but then there's a cringe robot who is just extremely annoying.

I looked up the Reddit thread for this as well as a New York Times post on this series and most other people are saying it's a shot and a miss.

I guess when Jon is an executive producer on his own show he can generate enough interest for the studio to give him a golden ticket for a 2nd season. This is unreal, and I wonder if there is an early termination clause to the contract. Reminds me of an pro basketball team selecting a player for the draft, spend millions on his contract and then find out he's constantly eating hamburgers in New Orleans, overweight and without conscience.

Good luck with your scam Jon.

gruesome unfunny show
calmasariver9 January 2024
What were they thinking? John hamn is very talented but you would not know it from this show. Detestable vulgar characters.gruesome unfunny stereotyped characters An awful horror show from Svengoolie would be an improovement . Ed wood movies were better This is absolute garbage Send it to an awful cable network. Frankenstein movies of the 1940s were better than this. Vincent Price could not save this . Worse than the awful Krapopolis. Dont let your kids watch this. Do yourself a favor and watch the classic shows on METV Yes they are reruns but at least they have quality. Do yourself a favor and buy Amazon Prime.

Great start (pilot review)
funkiepickle10 January 2024
A frenetic energy courses through out the show that keeps it moving well. It mocks just about every trope of cop/detective show procedurals - from the family trouble, the main character being grizzled veteran of the force called in to solve an "unsolvable" case, misdirects on who the perpetrator is etc. Jon Hamm as Marvin Flute is clearly having a blast and delivers lines with speed and somehow subtly delivers asides allowing jokes to be slotted into exposition in a quick funny way. Anything with Alan Tudyk will be worth your time. And Rachel Dratch gives a good turn as a Flute's Son. Overall a twisted and funny pilot, with a lot of potential. I'm looking forward to more!

Same Old trope different setting.
mvonnicholson20 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Bumbling idiot toxic white male somehow figures out a way to save the day despite the diverse geniuses around him working extremely hard and being the butt of every joke. It gets really tiring after a while to see this joke about toxic masculinity and racism but nothing done about it in real life.

We've got to evolve past these horrible troupes that don't do anything but pacify toxic man children even more with idiotic comedy. These types of shows are so played out. I wish for once, just once, there was an actual intelligent, diverse, progressive, and funny show. Yet, the powers that be want us to live in a constant state of idiocracy. The market is oversaturated with things like this and not the great things that could be.

best animated comedy on FOX in YEARS.
scottiealwood9 January 2024
The recent animation at FOX has been disappointing to say the least. This show immediately brings the funny. Love the cast, the animation. Very excited about the future of this show and what nonsense the detective Flute will get into.

I hope it continues as a bad guy of the week where Jon Hamm is continuously having to solve cases.

And with Kevin Michael Richardson, Alan Tudyk and Rachel Dratch as the son. Couldn't have asked for a better supporting voice cast.

I will be baffled if this show doesnt aquire more seasons like the recent crop of animation domination shows have.

Lets go Grimsburg!

SURE LOOKS LIKE CANNON
ge-2593813 February 2024
The main character sure looks like the old TV series Cannon which started William Conrad. The series ran from 1971 to 1976. Cannon was a private detective and loved good food. William Conrad was a very versatile actor who's career spanned both radio, movies and TV. He also played Matt Dillion on the radio show Gunsmoke. I think the new show should acknowledge the connection with this old show. I think you can find Cannon TV series somewhere on the internet. It seems like alot of old ideas are being recycled. Cannon was a good series for it's time and I think this new Grimsburg is a nice tribute.

Cannot understand the haters...
alex-2456716 April 2024
So I have been watching Grimsburg, every episode to date and that is now episode 9.

I genuinely laugh every episode, out loud..

It has some great actors in it. Alan Tudyk to name my favourite (Firefly, Con Man, Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn and Resident Alien (God I love Resident Alien)).

There are underlying threads throughout the episodes and series, won't spoil anything. Some quirky characters, which are great. I can never guess the episode content and where it will go from the start of that episode, other shows feel so predictable.

Give it a shot and don't take it seriously. It is not a doco and thankfully not reality TV drivel.
