Netflix would rather spend money on blood origin than good storytelling
angotti8117 April 2023
Words cannot express how disappointed I am with this movie that should have been a full season. Everyone involved tried their best, but it is clear that Netflix left them with two hours instead of the necessary 12 to finish the story properly. The relationship between two step brothers eying the throne. How Aethalstan just becomes a tyrant. How his father even died? And the gay advisor? WHY?

It amazes me how deft these corporations are. You have a beloved series and you just let it fall to pieces. I mean look at GOT. They should have fired D&D and gotten new showrunners. In this case it is obvious Netflix just decided on a movie rather than pay the talented creators, actors, writers, and everyoneone else involved, probably to make another horrible anime live action, or the crap witcher prequel.

Should take a note from Vince Gilliam and let it go till he see's it fit to end.

I thank everyone involved for 5 seasons of the best historically based fantasy I've seen.

Destiny is all, and hopefully Netflix will feel that fire one day.

This was too fast
bojanvuletic15 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really dont understand why they didnt make one more season instead of this movie. The movie was insanely fast, skipping from one scene to the other with constant time jumps inbetween.

As a huge fan of The Last Kingdom i tried to like it but the pace and motivation of some characters (looking at you Athelstan) was questionable at best. He killed Aldhelm and betrayed Uthred in a matter of minutes only because his "boyfriend" said so. Cmon.

Im sorry but with what history these guys had that was really dumb.

They tried to put too much story in a 2 hour movie. At moments I felt I was watching a long recap of a whole season.

If it was any other movie I would probably rate it even lower. Shame.

A disappointing ending for Uhtred son of Uhtred
georgewhittingham115 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have been a fan of the last Kingdom since the day it came out. I own all the books, having read them multiple times, and watched the first few series often.

Season 1 was fantastic, genuinely an incredible show. Seasons 2 and 3 were good, and seasons 4 and 5 were ok.

With the film, which actually contains the events of the final three books, it sadly has continued down a disappointing trend.

It's biggest fault is that is just rushed, seriously rushed. Each scene is pivotal to the story, with different key events taking place in a matter of minutes. Because of this, we don't connect with any new characters; in fact we barely get to know them. Before we know it we've reached the climax of the story.

There were aspects I did like, the battle scene was done well, Finan as usual stands out giving us some good moments of humour, but there is little to like unfortunately.

They should have, in my opinion, done one final season. Connected with the characters more, strung out the important events, really build to a satisfying climax.

Worth the watch if you're a fan of the show, but it will leave you feeling a little empty inside. Read the books - you won't regret it.

Good but not great. Should have been a full season
eclyptix15 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly it hit the right notes but it was muted by its lack of longevity. As an 8 episode season this story would have been great.

And as far as Athelstan goes, turns out the depiction matches the books and the history, you know what i mean, yes, it was accurate, not a woke thing...beyond that, I don't think he was quite as easily fooled by his advisors in the books.

I also think a season would have allowed time to develop Aethelweard better for his fate at the hands of his brother. Mostly the books were improved by the show in terms of characters, but as a movie this didn't work out so much. Eadgifu and Edmund also lacked development. But it's okay I suppose...

Overall a fun story that should have had more time to flesh out the details...good but not great.

Uthred is the smart one, Finan is the funny one and Netflix has made a mistake!
frank-liesenborgs2 May 2023
It seems like every show nowadays feels the need to include LGBTQ+ relationships, even if it doesn't fit the narrative. Additionally, the character Aethelstan felt out of place compared to his portrayal in season 5, almost as if the writers were forcing him into the story. It's disappointing to see these kinds of decisions being made. Without giving away any spoilers, I also found the ending to be unsatisfying. It would have been nice for the writers to make a firm decision instead of leaving it open-ended. Furthermore, the transition from the last episode to the finale could have been smoother. I've always admired the character of Uhtred because of his intelligence, but I found some of his decisions in this season to be frustratingly foolish. Although there were some interesting plot twists, the overall flow of the season felt disjointed. Overall, I was disappointed with the final season, but not entirely surprised. I think it would be beneficial for them to do one more season and focus on getting it right. Perhaps they could explore the story of Uhtred's son or draw inspiration from the book series. In my opinion, staying true to the source material would be the key to success. I have been a fan of The Last Kingdom since its inception, owning and rereading all the books multiple times and rewatching the earlier seasons frequently. The first season was phenomenal, but the following seasons were merely good, with the fourth and fifth seasons being mediocre. The film, which covers events from the final three books, was a letdown due to its rushed pacing. Each scene felt crucial to the story, with significant events occurring within minutes of each other, making it difficult to connect with new characters. The climax of the story arrived too quickly, leaving little time for character development. While there were some aspects of the film that I enjoyed, such as the well-executed battle scenes and Finan's humorous moments, overall, it fell short of expectations. It would have been better to have one more season, allowing for more character development and a more satisfying conclusion. If you're a fan of the show, it's still worth watching, but it may leave you feeling unfulfilled. I highly recommend reading the books for a more satisfying experience.

It could have destroyed the perfect season 5 but it really didn't
Giannis250414 April 2023
Let me just say that i believe that "The Last Kingdom" is one of the most underrated series of the new era of TV..It started like a low budget Vikings series and Netflix made it as one of the best series it has on his platform with each season being better from the previous one... Alexander Dreymon is not a great actor but he is born for this role and he proves it once more.."Seven kings must die is a great(not perfect) conclusion to a beautiful saga that i believe ends here..Now,the production stays in the same level as the late seasons,i really loved they made the fight scenes more realistic, the performances are as good as it always was and at the end is a movie that is providing to the Last Kingdom saga and not ruin it...Now it's finally time to say farewell to this incredible show that keep us company for 8 whole years.

Disappointing except the ending
tennismenace16 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, I was surprised by this movie. Having been a fan of the series, my expectations were sky high. Well, they were not met and thus the 6star rating. It would have been a 1 star rating if I stopped watching after the first 90 minutes, but the last 30 minutes saved it ...somewhat. I do love good endings though.....this had that.

Okay, here is biggest complaint....they made righteous Aethelstan out to be gay. Seriously? Why would you do that? History was my minor in college and I love to read such and never have I come across that being put on Æthelstan. In fact, this is what you will find if you do some leg work to know more about him...." Æthelstan was one of the most pious West Saxon kings, and was known for collecting relics and founding churches. His household was the centre of English learning during his reign, and it laid the foundation for the Benedictine monastic reform later in the century." Just because he never married (died age 45), you shouldn't take "creative license" and decide to make him gay just to appease the vocal LBG crowd. That is not fair, especially attributing such quality to a God-fearing man. Not good and definitely turned my wife and I off.

Besides that, like I said, the writing for the first 90 minutes was horrible....no real purpose, all over the place. Not sure who was good and who wasn't. But thankfully the Great battle at the end, Uhtred's honesty, and Aethelstan's humility grace me some people to root for. Oh, I also liked the Saxon Queen...the mother of Edmund, the next ruler to follow Aethelstan and one of King Edward's wives.

Well, I guess I've said enough. Sorry to be somewhat of a Debbie downer here. Cheers.

Great Ending for The Great Show
Ivy_m014 April 2023
Amazing !!! Definetely it was a breathless 2 hours. I was on the edge of my seat! High tension, lots of twists, heart-breaking & satisfying scenes, as it was for 5 seasons. The special touch at the end was great, moved me so deeply!! We have witnessed a unique journey since 2015 with Uhtred and the other wonderful characters. I will never forget this beautiful show and the amazing cast. We rarely come across such quality and special works. If you like historical genre, you should definitely watch the epic The Last Kingdom series and its sequel Seven Kings Must Die. You will never regret it !!!

Mixed feelings here
livlov2218 April 2023
I absolutely enjoyed all 5 seasons therefore for the sake of this story I give it a 7 BUT they made soooo many bad choices. Why first of all must every show these days include lgbtq relationships? This Aethelstan is such a stark contrast to season 5. It's like they go out of the way to include whether it makes sense or not. Is it a rule or something? Second no spoilers but I hate the ending. Be decisive already. 3rd like they need to do a better job tying last episode to this. Also Uhtred made some very stupid choices that are just irritating. I love Uhtred partly because he was smart but the choices he made in this made no sense. Nice twist and turns but still so much less than the series. It didn't flow. All in all it was a disappointment but not a major disappointment. With that said I'd like to see one more for them to just get it right. Maybe with Uhtreds son or something. Look to the series for inspiration. Stay true to that.

Netflix strikes again
ddupree2019 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After a nearly perfect 5 season stretch the story of Lord Uhtred comes to an end. I've been waiting for this since they first announced it but now that I've seen it, I'm left disappointed. The pacing moves at breakneck speed and doesn't allow the story to really take hold like the show did. There's almost no detail or explanation given on seemingly major plot points and it just felt rushed and off. I don't have a problem with the story at all. I just wish they would've broken the final books up instead of trying to cram everything into a movie just shy of 2 hours. It just felt like a slap in the face to the story and fans. Netflix should have let them finish off the last 3 books like they intended to. The smaller, intimate details are what made each season so good. I don't know what I expected but it wasn't this.

To those, downrating, Guys It's a budget issue
monkeydparesh16 April 2023
Show runners can only make new seasons it netflix funds it. Netflix only funds it, when people watch it. We should be proud that the creators concluded the series.

Yes, this needed an entire season. But you think, creators don't know this already ? As audience, can't we be a little emphatic. Some folks comparing it with Game of thrones ending .. are you guys so stupid ? Do you not read news ? Netflix had to shut so many good Tv series, yet we got to see 5 full seasons of The Last Kingdom. Would have loved to see this movie into a 10 episodes series.

Try and put yourself in the shoes of the creator and think how you would feel that no matter how much you tried, you still end up disappointing the fans ? To me, it's sad. I had higher expectations from the maturity level of fans here. Don't generally right reviews, this is mu first one.

Exciting And Enjoyable, But Should Have Been A Couple More Seasons
david-meldrum20 April 2023
Films that have grown out of a television series face a number of issues, one of the most challenging of which is finding a story that justifies their existence. It's too easy for these films to be cursed with wafer-thin, overstretched plots. This film faces the opposite problem, presumably because it's adapted from multiple books that would under other circumstances have provided the basis of more than one season of television. There's certainly enough to suggest that possibility here. The show was underrated and deserved a more coherent conclusion; it's perhaps because most of the film's viewers have spent five seasons with these characters and this world that we're willing to forgive a plot-heavy, character-light conclusion. For those of those of us so invested, it's enjoyable and immersive, but we do wish it had been more; like the show, the film's climactic battle is thrillingly intense and coherently staged where it could easily have been bafflingly chaotic. The final pay off works; you just can't help wishing it had been more.

Extremely disappointing
Dannyboi9417 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Last Kingdom is a great series, a hidden gem that did not receive the love it deserved. It had fantastic characters, a well written story, great action, emotional weight and was perfectly paced. Seven Kings Must Die had none of these.

This movie was not bad by any means, it is still enjoyable, but it was a complete mess. Everything happens way too quickly; it jumps between events without giving the viewers time to process what just happened. The editing, the directing and even the sets were off. This movie should have been season 6 of TLK, but instead it was condensed into a 2 hour flick that was a shell of what it could have been. If this had actually been season 6, it would have been the best season of the series, and a very powerful ending. The last scenes of this film hit hard, and if you were a fan of these characters, I dare you not to swell. But that's all this really has going for it. It could have been amazing as a season. The main villain was very smart, and his whole plan was masterfully put, but all of it was for nothing, because it was too rushed.

Several characters who were important, and yet still alive by season 5, were not even mentioned. Where was Uthred's daughter? Were was the Queen Mother? Where was Hild? So many great characters just pushed aside with no explanation.

The battle scenes in this movie were also very poorly done. There was no real thrill like in the original show. Everything was shaky and hard to see. The set pieces were also poor. It's almost like they had the budget of a TV season instead of a movie. This doesn't feel like a film at all.

I know this sounds like I am bashing this movie hard, and while it was very underwhelming, it also has its moments. Like I mentioned above, the last few moments are powerful and hit the emotions. The music is amazing, as it always is. Uthred and his crew are as great as ever. The story, while rushed was interesting.

Overall Seven Kings Must Die was a mess, a disappointing ending to a great series. It doesn't ruin the series, thankfully, but it won't leave it's mark.

5/10.

Destiny is all!
S3pt3m63r14 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So sad to see this great series come to an end. The tales of Uhtred of Babbenburgh have been compulsory viewing for me since they started, and the historical context of translating modern place names into medieval names is genius. This film takes place following the death of King Edward and, as the title suggests, a prophecy of 7 kings must die is dreamt by the wife of Fennic to unite England.

The film's action proceeds to follow the Prince assumptive and the contenders. Good old battle between Saxon and Danes, with a mix of Scottish and Irish thrown in. Lots of political intrigue, backstabbing, betrayal and redemption along the way and losing some well loved friends and shedding lots of tears and sadness.

The final battle was awesome, tightly fought and brilliantly choreographed. Did they lose 7 kings? Maybe? The end result was satisfying but so sad and I shed lots of tears. I don't want to give too much away but I shall miss Uhtred. He definitely deserves his place at the top table in the banqueting hall in Valhalla alongside Brida, Heston and everyone else who are already there. Destiny is all!

What a let down!
zenjunkie14 April 2023
The Last Kingdom had been a fantastic series - however this film has not been of the same standard.

The story is sketchy, jumping from scene to scene without a constant flow. It seems to me they have tried to fit too much into the time allowed.

Whereas the series had time to build up tension and develop characters, this feels rushed, the direction clumsy and sometimes disjointed.

It's further spoiled by continuous very loud background music which detracts from the story and is actually annoying.

It does have its moments, the last half being better than the first half, but is not as enjoyable as it was, feeling somewhat repetitious.

I had been looking forward to this film but was sadly disappointed.

The Saxon Stories Butchered
marius-bancila24 April 2023
Although quite old at this time (must have been in his late 60s even if he looks like early 40s) Uthred must fight another battle in the forging of England. So instead of making one more season of The Last Kingdom they decided to go with a roughly 2 hours movie. Which was OK. Certainly, this had little to do with history, as it was only loosely based on real people and events. It's also quite different than the Saxon Stories books but it's also loosely based on it. I no longer have hope of finding a historical movie being historical accurate. So I had no expectations from this movie and therefore no disappointments. Except for the fact that they made Æthelstan, who was one of the most pious West Saxon kings, gay. But that's expected from Netflix.

MISSED THIS SHOW SO MUCH
junaidjan114 April 2023
Does not disappoint absolutely loved it. I wish it never had to end . The series was brilliant and when it ended all of us who loved the show were gutted as we never wanted it to end. We've all been waiting for this movie to come out. The team that makes these brilliant episodes are so talented, utterly brilliant. I watched the movie today and was hooked and happy to watch straight from start. Loved seeing see the main man Uthred just such a wonderful character played by an amazingly talented actor. The show should go on and on and never end but all good things do come to an end. Everyone watch it.

Unfulfilling.
W011y4m518 April 2023
I've been a fan of "The Last Kingdom" for years, have happily watched each & every returning series (upon its subsequent release) & for the most part, found it to be a consistently strong show from beginning to end. Thus, upon the announcement of "The Seven Kings Must Die", it was arguably understandable for me to assume (considering the same creators were involved in the making of this production) that stoic reliability of standard would therefore be maintained in the long awaited film sequel... So it gives me no joy to state how frustratingly, I was wrong to make that optimistic presumption - because rather than feel like a natural end to the franchise, it alternatively seems akin to a rushed, watered-down, badly-paced denouement whose under-development's inexplicable when the premise could've so easily been realised (to far greater effect) in an additional 10 episode final 6th season, fleshing out the narrative & bringing the story to a rewarding end in a way which is fitting / appropriate. Hence, rather than finish on a high, the resultant dissatisfaction instilled by its mediocrity does undoubtedly give the impression of a lacklustre low, failing to provide fans with the cinematic climax it sought to build... So the brand goes out with a whimper instead of a bang - (I think we'd all agree?) less than what it rightfully deserves.

Of course, the project invariably had lots of potential brimming beneath the surface but when the method of delivery fails to demonstrably justify the change in format in the space of its own run-time (transferring itself from the small screen to the big, yet frustratingly retaining the muted grandeur of a large budget TV budget - apparently a "movie", still operating within the restrictive boundaries of limitations which theoretically shouldn't be there now it's grown in size & become something else entirely), the necessitated omissions made to ensure this "works" (killing off major characters without even having the courtesy to actually depict their profoundly important deaths - especially doing actors Eliza Butterworth & Timothy Innes so dirty, people who've loyally stayed for years - re-contextualising the conflict we've grown to historically appreciate, starving it of time to permit for the sudden developments to feel organically occurring in nature) are consequently less defensible (artistically), exacerbating the discontentment further.

Take the "Battle of Brunanburh" for instance (not exactly a "spoiler" since it's an actual fact we've known about for centuries & a seismic event in our nation's past, both in scale & later impact, portrayed in the final 30 minutes here, symptomatically typifying the problems I had with this) - blatantly endeavouring to mimic the majesty of Miguel Sapochnik's iconic "Game of Thrones" installment "The Battle of The Bastards" (lensed by DoP Fabian Wagner), however director Ed Bazalgette (a talent I've admired for a while) & cinematographer Luke Bryant jarringly shoot the clash predominantly in a series of quickly-cut close ups, visibly heightening the sense of claustrophobia & tension (with action inescapably close to each participant, heightening the atmosphere) but equally (& inadvertently), for a colossal skirmish of such epic proportions, it also comes across as annoyingly small (due to the sense that we seldom witness - quite literally - the wider implications, far reaching in proportionality & perhaps what a theatrical viewing experience is meant to convey), possessing surprisingly intimate moments... Not enough to give more than is detracted from the sequence, as a whole.

That's not to say I found this to be bad. Not at all. Far from it... I simply believe the concept could've been "more", had the team executed the idea differently & potentially received a higher investment from Netflix. Adequate, despite my complaints - plausibly less than the sum of its parts.

Watch a second time.

Warning: Spoilers
I urge you to watch a second time.

Im a huge fan of the show and books.

When i heard about this film after five amazing seasons i was bwyond excited. We had a perfect ending to Uhtreds destiny. To regain Bebbenburg and the show fully delivered.

However it was never supposes to go beyond season five.

We begged for it.

It was hard to see our warrior weaken and so many beloved characters missing. But most would of been dead by this time

It perfectly rapped up Uhtreds oath to Alfred. He helpes form England.

I urge you to watch again then rate. Its a single entity to the show and fantastic 👏

Good not Great, Too quick paced :/
sarwarh78917 April 2023
Seven Kings Must Die,

Only leaving a review as I am a huge Last Kingdom fan. I wish this movie were a mini tv series rather than a movie, as it was too fast-paced, and major events were happening one after another. The ending was great hence seven stars. Otherwise, I would have given it a lower rating.

I feel like if it was a two-hour-long plus movie, they could have had the ability to add suspense and emotion.

But the overall decent movie, acting superb as usual from the actors. The script was great as usual. I will miss this trilogy.

Seven kings must die - 7/10.

The Last Kingdom - 10/10.

Disappointing, confusing and rushed
motionniss30 April 2023
I am a huge fan of the show, although it had its flaws it was always very entertaining. This movie however starts out very confusing with one of the main character being gone apparently in between movies without much explanation. Its pacing is extremely rushed, it felt like they where trying to put 1-2 seasons worth of story into one movie. On top of it all because its a movie you are expecting a movie budget and therefor a more epic battle which it did not deliver on at all. There are better and more epic episodes of this show then what this movie gave us. A very disappointing ending to an entertaining show.

Should have been a full season
rcaruso-5639618 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Uhtred was a great hero well developed throughout the series. A movie length send off did not do this hero justice. While it was great to see Uhtred enter Valhalla as he deserved, the story was way to brief. Uhtred fans needed more.

The characters and storyline did not develop as well as they would have during an 8 episode season. This certainly could not be a stand alone film. Viewers who did not watch the series would be hard pressed to understand.

Even the very ending was too short. Uhtred battled his entire life for the reward of Valhalla but that scene was but a few seconds.

I really should have given this brief ending to a great series fewer than 8 stars, but I just could not do that to my hero, Uhtred.

Not Really Necessary
wtmerrett18 April 2023
A nicely done extention of the series but it did nothing to move the Uhtred story forward.

I realize the final battle historically actually occurred and the participants shown were there (except the fictional ones of course) but was the entire movie necessary.

I feel it was not.

I liked the ending of the series and was happy to imagine what may have happened after it ended.

The Last Kingdom was a fantastic series from Bernard Cornwell's exhaustively researched books and I was happy to rewatch the entire series from start every time a new season was released.

Could you miss seeing this film and still feel the series ended well?

Yes, absolutely.

What a stupid mess
williamford-1780526 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Having eagerly anticipated this feature, I was bitterly disappointed by this mockery of a conclusion to a series I had enjoyed very much (at times, anyway). The quality of the brilliant first season, which declined over each sequel, is long gone here.

Obviously the pacing is way off. There are at least a season's worth of twists and turns, and when they all come at you so fast it stretches belief well past breaking point.

This is exacerbated by a completely ridiculous plot in which virtually no character has consistent motivations and nothing they do is believable. One minute a character has his son taken hostage and is being executed by a king because he's so committed to his own independence by another, two scenes later when nothing has changed he is swearing his undying loyalty and putting all his faith in the king that was about to kill him.

The politics make no sense at all. The kings of independent Shetland, Orkney and Man are leading armies against England because... its king pillaged a few villages on the Scottish border? The absurdly complex villainous plot that unravels is all reliant upon the king happening to die exactly when he dies, among a long series of other narrative conveniences.

Who are we supposed to be rooting for here? Surely not Aethelstan, who is more villain than hero throughout: killing his brother for no reason, executing one of the series most beloved characters for no reason, ordering the massacres of civilians over and over again? All that is forgiven because his lover told him he should do it? Towards the end, the peril we are presented with is that Aethelstan might die - oh no! Not the guy who caused every problem in the whole story by being such a gullible and pompous buffoon!

And the villains? Well we have a completely implausible incognito viking warlord who has somehow become the leader of an influential saxon christian cult, as well as another viking warlord with the character of a shoe who might as well be anyone.

The battle at the end is dull, predictable, and packed with grey-washout visuals where every soldier is interchangeable. Somehow people are having conversations amid the chaos. The genius tactical innovations of our veteran-of-a-hundred-battles hero? Leaving little bits of metal on the ground for the enemy to walk on (owie!), and hiding a battalion behind trees (no one could see that coming!) Capped up with a completely emotionless and contrived death.

The film has no themes. No character or character development. No tension. No creativity of any kind. The characters end up exactly where they began. It's almost amusingly similar to a play by school children.
