I did not know what to expect going into this one and was pleasantly surprised to find out that it is more than just another take on the 'The Nutcracker' ballet. The Puerto Rican culture along with the mixing of ballet with salsa dancing is lovely to watch on screen. Moreover, 'Sugar Plum Twist' brings together a cast of fresh faces with performances that were entertaining and engaging. The story also had some noble underlining messages around cultural diversity, which were nice to see. The movie follows Natalia (played by Jamie Gray Hyder), a professional ballerina who has returned home to Richmond after an injury ended her career as a dancer. She now works as an assistant choreographer at the local ballet company, a studio she holds fond memories of growing up, hoping one day to become its resident choreographer. During an audition for the annual performance of the 'The Nutcracker' for the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Natalia meets Viviana (played by Laura Rosguer), one of the Richmond residents who auditioned for the part. Vivi's family owns a local dance studio where she teaches Salsa, but she has always dreamed of becoming a ballerina (Natalia being one of her heroes). Natalia is inspired by what she sees at Vivi's studio one evening, and so, they decide to work together to try to modernize the Christmas classic by adding a bit of a Latin twist. One of the elements I enjoyed about the movie is the dancing. Unlike some other Hallmark dance-based movies, the dancing in 'Sugar Plum Twist' is incorporated throughout the movie and is central to the storyline. Though the movie is sluggish at first, it picks up nicely as the story progresses with some strong dialogue, beautiful dancing, and a lot of holiday spirit and festive cheer. At one level, the story is a critique of ballet today; that is, ballet needs to change with the times (modernize). And in this story, modernizing is the mixing of (dance) cultures and traditions. At another level, the story is about the difficulties some dancers face in the ballet world or classic performing arts more broadly, and what it takes to overcome this. There is, of course, a romance story here, but it is secondary and serves mainly to supplement what I just mentioned. The acting, overall, is strong. Hyder and Rosguer both have solid performances. Rosguer has some dancing skills, which is a plus. They both have a couple of awkward acting movements but these were infrequent and did not take much away from their overall performance, I felt. The supporting cast is also very good, entertaining to watch on-screen. Though there is plenty of skill and energy in the final dance scene, which I enjoyed, there is not much ballet (and a lot of salsa) in the ballet and salsa sugar plum twist. Given that ballet is most popular in Russia - it's considered a 'state treasure' and is 'the dance of the Russian people' (rich and poor) - I would be curious to see how they felt about the mixing of ballet with salsa. Anyway, in addition to the dancing, there are plenty of Christmassy scenes that instill a bit of festive cheer. The (Puerto Rican) baked goodies at Vivi's parent's house looked delicious. All in all, if you enjoy (watching) dancing and are a fan of Hallmark Christmas movies, look no further, this one is for you.

I love the fact that I can watch any Hallmark movie and not listen to bad words, see violence, or experience any heavy subject matter. However, it's painful to watch whenever the movie involves a musician, painter, singer, or dancer in this instance.
It's one thing to tell us that Natialia Haddad was a famous dancer, but every former dancer will look at her do a little dancing and shake their head. And it's obvious that Vivi has serious training, and the right body type. Why not have Natalia have more of a back story, one that has her away from the ballet world for longer...or anything more believable. And KUDOS to Vivi! It was so fun to watch her!

This Hallmark holiday film is weak in the romance department, but provides a watchable story. In fact, this is one of their most ambitious stories, because it requires significant choreography and the dancers necessary to bring it to the screen.
The story is about two young women: Natalia (Jamie Gray Hyder), who recently gave up dance performance to work in production, and Viviana (Laura Rosguer), a Latin dance instructor with dreams of being a professional ballerina.
Though the film begins sluggishly, it picks up as it progresses.
It also avoids what might have been a pitfall. The story is about a production of "The Nutcracker" that Natalia is working on. There is a suggestion that it should be augmented by some Latin dance. Well, dance theater audiences have expectations based on the promotional literature sent out by dance companies. An audience expecting a classical rendition of a classic Nutcracker story---such as by Balanchine---do not want to be surprised by a salsa-infused dance number. This pitfall was avoided by adding a Latin coda after the performance of the classic ballet. Thus, the story retains its authenticity.

I enjoyed this Latin twist on the boring Balanchine nutcracker...don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Tchaikovsky and disagree with those classical snobs who think his work is too Plebeian! (Check out his piano concertos...they are amazing.)
I love Latin dancing and I enjoyed its incorporation in a Hallmark holiday film.
The acting was great, the music good...I think they could have used a bigger budget for the costumes...but otherwise was happy.

This was ok. Hallmark still trying to pull in viewers by being more diverse in storyline and performers used.
Can't complain about that, but I feel the writing and storylines just aren't as strong as they used to be overall.
That comes with new staff and writers, so can't be helped.
Saw that someone said Hallmark used to show movies based on good clean fun.
What about this wasn't good clean fun?

While I found this a good movie I have to say hallmark hasn't been accused of going woke but in a free society they have been forced to change their style to appease a bunch of liberal socialist losers.anyway back to the movie it was a new spin on a classic show. What's really funny is these same people that force producers to create these films changing classics which are traditional. Also scream if you question their traditional ways but again it was a good movie but still prefer the nutcracker Christmas with Amy acker and Sophia Lucia.

Lately Hallmark has often been accused of going woke. For many, this movie will be another example of that. I prefer to look at their recent lineups of movies as having some that educate about and celebrate different ethnic cultures that are all around many of us. It is interesting, however, that this story is set in Richmond, VA where the Hispanic population is a fairly small percentage.
This movie explores two things related to cultural diversity. One issue is the difficulties some minority performers face in classic performing arts. Another is the question of including new cultural ideas into these traditional cultural activities,
We have Ms. Kat who stands for all the traditional or classic norms in a big-time ballet production company, especially as it regards a production of the Nutcracker. And then there are Natalia and Vivi. They represent minority performers in a world many assume doesn't give minorities enough opportunity to shine.
And it goes deeper. Passion is always important in Hallmark and other similar TV movies. Natalia tells Vivi that her performances must have passion. And to be truly fair to the performer, she needs the opportunity to explore her own cultural background in her performances. So, Natalia choreographs the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in a Latin style similar to Salsa. Her objective is to give Vivi something to put in her performance reels.
This movie also explores where does an iconic performer (or sports hero) go when their body is no longer fit for the actual performance?
And we have two simultaneous romances. Both are secondary plot threads.
There is plenty of sappiness and a little melodrama. And lots of dancing.

Hallmark Channel and the Cancel Culture War on Christmas

Unbelievable, considering they profit hugely from their Christmas movies, but the Cancel Culture has invaded Hallmark. Granted, the secular side of Christmas has always been the major focus of their movie plots, but now there is a definite, obvious, attempt to remove Christ from their Christmas altogether.
Take a recent offering, "Sugar Plum Twist." There is a scene where the town's Christmas tree is being lit for the first time. (See video clip below.) After the obligatory countdown, the lights go on and a choir bursts into song with a favorite carol, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," which proclaims the birth of Jesus. The reason for the season you know.
Only there is no proclaiming, no voices glorifying The Newborn King, no Peace on Earth. Instead you get the famous melody shockingly sung to "La la la, la la la la, La la la, la la la la," Hallmark's not so subtle attempt to wipe out Christ from our culture, from the world. I mean they could have substituted "O Christmas Tree" and no one would have blinked an eye. It would have been accepted as all their secular films are.
Are Christians going to put up with this blatant distortion of their centuries old historic beliefs, or this mockery of their faith? Or will they be "tolerant," the buzz word for society's political correctness? There is no Christmas without Christ.

'The Nutcracker' with a twist

Expectations were mixed to relatively positive prior to watching. Absolutely love watching dancing, despite being no good at it myself, and love even more so 'The Nutcracker' (have done ever since the age of six). Hallmark did do a fair share of good Christmas films in 2021 and 'Sugar Plum Twist' had one of the best premises of that year, one of Hallmark's most ambitious and is different. Am however not a fan of Jamie Gray Hyder and never warmed at all to her or her character on 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit'.
'Sugar Plum Twist' really impressed me. As far as 2021 Hallmark Christmas films go (which was a very up and down batch), it is one of the best (as well as one of the most ambitious and refreshing) and makes the most of its premise, the execution not being too conventional. It is not perfect, with the flaws being a couple of the usual suspects, but there is a huge amount to like here, absolutely loved the clever twist on a favourite and Hyder surprised me in a good way.
Will agree absolutely that the protagonist's sudden negative reaction to being defended was far too extreme and completely undeserved.
Maybe Rachel DeBenedect overdoes it as a character that has few redeeming qualities for most of the film and for reasons not clear. She does become a good deal better when the character softens and in a change of heart that is much more realistic than most changes of heart in Hallmark films, as it doesn't feel as rushed and it is movingly done.
As said, Hyder really surprised me in an engaging performance as an identifiable and inspiring character that is the complete opposite of her over-zealous, opinionated and cold character on 'Special Victims Unit'. Laura Rosquer charms too and they have great chemistry together. The acting on the whole is fine and the interaction always connected and never distant or uncomfortable looking. The characters are written realistically and in on the whole a not too perfect or overly flawed way (other than Miss Kat in regard to the latter), was very inspired by the two leads.
It is a good looking film, particularly the scenery. Regardless of the lack of authenticity, it is still beautiful as is the decor. The music has verve and variety and the dancing is full of energy and grace in very clever choreography that does so well embracing Latin dance and culture. The climax is enough to inspire anybody in the performing arts. The script is not too cheesy or schmaltzy and flows well. The story is very heart-warming and charming, with the social issues being really relatable and handled tactfully. The diversity is also done tastefully and to me its increase in recent Hallmark films been more than welcome, quite surprising that including it has become a criticism when those complaining about it now were complaining about there not being enough of it before.

Utterly dreadful

This is artistic junk food run amok at every point. If there is going to be a story about ballet dancers, why can't hallmark employ real dancers and lend critical support to the profession? And why not showcase a profile of the real world of ballet? Probably all for the same reason of why there is fake snow with deciduous trees in full bloom and pianists that can't even fake approximated motions involved in playing a piano- and the list goes on. And why does relevancy have to cater to the lowest common denominator? Hallmark missed a great opportunity by not finding a school or a company and a real ballet choreographer to do the artistic side. The plot lines are predictable and expected with the formula movie. I can't imagine that it would be any more expensive to project the real thing rather than a vegetarian version of a fillet mignon. Hallmark should drop a couple of movies from its Mill and employ well-trained staff to ensure a reasonable air of believability with any storyline.

Good acting. But not a very moral story. Main character violates her contract to help a young Latina dancer. In the end of course the dancer gets to do a performance after the Nutcracker. The performance isn't ballet, but something out of a San Juan bar. Woke at its worst.
Fun Latin Ballet Dancing Movie

Honestly shocked and baffled by some of these ridiculous reviews. So because people like that Hallmark is diversifying their Christmas movies, and leaving good reviews that must mean they are paid for? Girl, bye.
Having a movie with people of color does not mean that this movie strays from Hallmarks, "good clean family Wholesome films". And yes, Latin dance and ballet actually do scream Christmas, because shocker other countries and people celebrate Christmas. I know it's a hard concept to grasp.
The acting is honestly no different than any other Hallmark movie. No one on Hallmark is going to win an Emmy or Oscar for their performance. And to be fair, they clearly cast for dancers and not actors, so yeah, their acting isn't going to be strong. They're dancers!
I've watched most of the movies this season, and this one actually has a pretty good story. You're following two "main" plots that make the movie a little more interesting. I love holiday movies that center around dancing and The Nutcracker.
I'm glad Hallmark is trying to reach a broader audience and making it more inclusive to other people. Some of these reviews actually sound like a character in the movie who doesn't like anything other than straight, classical ballet with zero variations.
Don't be swayed by these weirdly racist reviews of people who can't admit their views are old, outdated and kind of sad.

Hallmark has done it again with another clean, feel-good movie. Some of you may recognize one of the female leads as Salt from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. In real life, the actress is half-Lebanese and half-Caucasian.
Sugar Plum Twist touches on the subject of opening up the world of ballet (and the arts in general) to performers of all racial backgrounds, and experimenting in mixture classic European music and dance with Latin salsa and modern genres. But the movie doesn't shove racial politics down your throat. It's enjoyable for viewers of all racial backgrounds.
The only big complaint I have is that, deep in the movie, I don't really get why the protagonist gets angry at her love interest for speaking up in her defense. Her reaction was uncalled for. Instead of thanking him for supporting her, she takes her frustrations out on him. That's not a good way to treat your friends, let alone your future spouse. If he had said nothing, another screenwriter would have made her berate him for not having her back.

Firstly , the movie takes place in Richmond , VA, all snowy-like in December, which is not really characteristic of the city . It gets chilly in December, but not a winter wonder land. Furthermore, It does not even have a large Hispanic population. It could have worked in Miami, or any other city.

As with almost all of the Hallmark movies shoved through the pipeline this season, this was abysmal at best! Acting poor, stories unbelievable at best, and poorly delivered. I used to look forward to the Hallmark offering... but no longer.

Sugar Plum Twist (2021) -
It was difficult to tell whether the romance would be boy/girl or girl/girl to start with and it seemed that they were going to focus on the dancing element instead for a long time. I wondered if it might actually be the first Bisexual romance from Hallmark, as there seemed to be a flirty connection between them all for a while and certainly in the first half. I almost thought that they might even end up being a throuple?
When I did see which way things were going, I was a little bit disappointed, because I had believed in the relationship building between Vivi and Natalia, they would have made a cute couple, but I did like the way that Natalia's relationship with Matteo grew easily and organically.
Justin and Vivi didn't get much of an opportunity to show how theirs evolved though and he was a bit wooden too.
I did like that I was kept guessing however, which never happens.
I would probably say that it was a film that 'Step Up' (2006) fans might like, because it seemed to tick similar boxes.
I did have some issues with it of course. For instance, I found it hard to believe that any such professional theatre group wouldn't have cast their production a lot sooner than a few weeks before the event?
And the "Twist" itself might have worked better without all of the chaotic drumming. It seemed to be out of rhythm because of that.
Also, there were not enough extras at the tree lighting again, although it wasn't a huge tree for them to gather around anyway. It was those little things that haven't been taken care of properly once more.
I also repeat myself, as I have said with so many other films, by saying that just another ten to fifteen minutes could have allowed both romances and the issues at the theatre to have been explored that little bit more, which might have rounded the story nicely.

It was difficult to tell whether the romance would be boy/girl or girl/girl to start with and it seemed that they were going to focus on the dancing element instead for a long time. I wondered if it might actually be the first Bisexual romance from Hallmark, as there seemed to be a flirty connection between them all for a while and certainly in the first half. I almost thought that they might even end up being a throuple?
When I did see which way things were going, I was a little bit disappointed, because I had believed in the relationship building between Vivi and Natalia, they would have made a cute couple, but I did like the way that Natalia's relationship with Matteo grew easily and organically.
Justin and Vivi didn't get much of an opportunity to show how theirs evolved though and he was a bit wooden too.
I did like that I was kept guessing however, which never happens.
I would probably say that it was a film that 'Step Up' (2006) fans might like, because it seemed to tick similar boxes.
I did have some issues with it of course. For instance, I found it hard to believe that any such professional theatre group wouldn't have cast their production a lot sooner than a few weeks before the event?
And the "Twist" itself might have worked better without all of the chaotic drumming. It seemed to be out of rhythm because of that.
Also, there were not enough extras at the tree lighting again, although it wasn't a huge tree for them to gather around anyway. It was those little things that haven't been taken care of properly once more.
I also repeat myself, as I have said with so many other films, by saying that just another ten to fifteen minutes could have allowed both romances and the issues at the theatre to have been explored that little bit more, which might have rounded the story nicely.

Not Richmond VA

I watched this movie and when I heard Richmond, I was hoping they were talking about Richmond VA. Nothing I saw in the movie or heard in the movie told me it was Richmond, VA. The only thing that came close was when they said the dance studio was on Grace St. There is a Grace St. In Richmond and they do have store fronts that could house a dance studio like this one. Also, there is a ballet company in Richmond that presents the Nutcracker each year. But neither of these look anything like what is in the movie.
This was just another love story. And Hallmark is advertising they have a radio station now. Whoppee, opportunity to hear more or their cheesy music. The karaoke scene showed that a good singer can even make a bad song sound better.
Now that I have panned this movie, the good part was the diversity of this film. I loved the latin music and dancing. That is the reason I gave it 8 stars.

The redemption of Miss Kat

The romance was as lame as can be but I loved the message and the character arcs. From the beginning Miss Kat the head of the ballet company was a very unsympathetic character. Cold, Rigid, harsh and snooty. Maybe a little bit bigoted. I loved the way she turned around. The actress did a superb job. We hear a little back story of why she blew up at our heroine Natalia. And when she sees that Natalia was not being disloyal with all of the hard work and professionalism
, she apologizes sincerely and promotes her. And then she makes the finale perfect with her own initiative reflecting Natalia's vision and dreams. The good ending, interesting plot, beautiful dance, seldom seen Latino culture well presented rescued this one which did get a little draggy at times.

Nice enough story... But in an effort to be socially conscious, the lead character says that she wants to be a prima ballerina, but no one who looks like her is ever cast. Um, anyone ever heard of Alicia Alonso? If not, look it up. Giselle at the American Ballet Theatre in NYC in ...1943.

'Tis the season, and so we settled in to catch some holiday cheer. At first, I thought it would be something classic, but caught wind of a new Hallmark Movie and decided to check it out. At first blush, Sugar Plum Twist seems to be just another take on the wonderful Nutcracker Suite, but actually, surprisingly, it is so much more than that. It brings together a nest full of fresh faces that light up the stage right from the beginning. You don't know these people and it turns out to be a powerful element in the presentation.
So, you know the story of the Nutcracker, how a young girl befriends him and he comes to life, waging battle against the evil Mouse King. But in this special presentation, the story is enveloped by a series of other stories, most importantly that of a young budding choreographer (and former star ballerina herself) trying to make her way in a new position and dance company in Richmond. It all opens up with another young dancer trying out for the lead part as the Sugar Plum Fairy. This will be no easy feat, as the dance company's leader blocks the way to success for both of them.
Long story, short (or maybe not so short), choreographer, Natalia Haddad works hard to show she is ready to lead, but the Scrooge-like Ms. Kat holds back her grand recognition of Vivi Serrano, a young but powerful Latin dancer that applies for the lead. She doesn't get the part but shows an honesty and dance ability that is noted by Natalia. Now, while all this is happening, romance is boiling in the background as two suitors get into the act, one for Natalia and one for Vivi. Both turn out to be strong voices in their approaches to success and moving forward. It all culminates with Natalia seeing something special in Vivi's Latin flavor to dance, and she sets out to possibly make something new of the Nutcracker, while helping her achieve something she is not quite sure about in herself. This effort is twofold, as Natalia has something to prove here as well.
Now, all throughout, there is a constant practicing of the upcoming premier of the show, and there are several bright moments of some wonderful ballet from the young dancers, particularly the little ballerina in pink, who is held high in several sets throughout the movie. In many ways, she reflects the diversity that Vivi represents as to others being included in the art and bringing to bear their uniqueness to these stories. The story develops and Natalia is cut down by Ms. Kat for a questionable lack of focus, which is really something in her that keeps her from experiencing the true spirit of the season. Natalia still finds a way to work with Vivi, and with a solid cast of family and friends behind her, she wins the day in the end as Ms. Kat comes to realize the error of her ways and allows Natalia to rejoin the company, She even secures a very special spot and showcase for Vivi to express her diversity and beautiful mix of Latin dance as a special extended part of the Nutcracker presentation. And therein lies the "twist" of it all, that beneath this Christmas Carol-like Nutcracker Suite, the possibility of change and difference was able to win the day in a new way. Hopefully, that can be a real lesson to us all.
This is a lovely story, played by many wonderful actors that all brought a larger message to life in each other and us all. It is especially good to see and feel this movie during the holidays, it brought cheer amidst a reality of despair that we've all been facing for a couple of years now. This made me forget all that, and hope again for the better to come through in us all.

Loved it. As I now live in a multicultural country, Australia, I'm always puzzled by the usually narrow casting choices in these movies. Do they truly represent the US culture? That's not how I remember it from my younger days.
Lovely to see more real people and a wider range of characters. Bravo Hallmark!

The Sugar Plum Twist was an amazing movie to experience. The very title of this movie peeked my interest and well exceeded my expectations. It was truly a twist on a modern theme that has always captured my heart. The diversity in the cast chosen for this movie displayed extraordinary talent and inspiration. I enjoyed the cultural diversity and the elements that were captured around family and tradition. The performances held my attention throughout as I wanted to see every bit of them. There were so many scenes that I enjoyed, but I must say, the progression of the finale was outstanding. The performances were so beautifully executed that they amazed me. The costume designs were so impressive and nicely arrayed with the set design colors. Thank you Hallmark!
