In order to keep Archer from re-hooking up with Lana, Mallory decides Cyril needs and upgrade so he could become Archer's peer. Unfortunately, he has none of the qualities necessary. So Archer is ordered to be his mentor. Of course, this leads to insane shootings, poison pens, and the wrath of Lana. Archer knows immediately what is going on. There is the usual sexual tension between he and Lana. Mallory ends up nearly blind because her staff gave zucchinis instead of cucumbers to put over her eyes after a facial. This whole thing is so outrageous that it actually works. The characters are constantly at odds and the trash talking really is funny. There are also references to topical things that are fun to decode.

'Training Day is only the second episode of the show, but the characters' depravity is already well-realized. Doped up on painkillers, Mallory lets her racist flag fly ("Immigrants! That's all they do, you know - just drive around listening to raps and shooting all the jobs."), and Cyril's stuck with Sterling in a misguided scheme involving field training. Yeah, that's who you want for a mentor, Sterling Archer; the man who dabbles in reckless ballistics and prostitutes on a daily basis. Chris Parnell gets to shine as ISIS' sad-sack Cyril, while Pam and Carol round out the comedy in the workplace.
The writers have this down cold.
