Part of my shows to watch every christmas
jpapanone25 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Along with the 3 other Community christmas shows, this one starts off the quad. I love seeing Anthony Michael Hall pop up, and he plays a great bully. Just a fun enjoyable episode. When I first started giving Community a chance many years ago, I went a lot of episodes not laughing at all. I had to understand the characters and why the dialogue was funny or made sense. I honestly had to watch them a few times in order for the show to actually be funny to me...but once it did, I find it infectious. This is one of those episodes. The more I watch it, the better I like it.

A great addition to anyone's holiday tv lineup.

A Hilarious Christmas Special

With Season 1 ripe with fresh, witty material, "Comparative Religion" provides an example of the perfect comedy. With its classic witty one-liners and off-tempo humor, this episode doesn't disappoint. Its overall message is acceptance of others (and their beliefs) and unity. The hilarious fight scene at the conclusion of the episode adds to the holiday festivities. A must-watch that avid Community fans should revisit when they begin to feel animosity towards their family members during holiday season.

Rusty and Clark Griswold together again

I didn't recognize him all growed up, but when the credits rolled I had to check on here that, indeed, Anthony Michael Hall and his exhausting 3 names played the school bully, reuniting him with Chevy Chase who played his dad in the Vacation movies. That is all.

Nice blend of humor and awkward controversy.

Yvette Brown does a great job portraying Shirley as the type of Christian people like me (once Catholic, now Atheist) try to avoid during December. She has an insecurely difficult time "coping" with her classmates' various religious backgrounds. One thing about Christian zeal is they often choose to "love thy neighbor" only when it conveniently fits their narrative. I have a cousin who genuinely believes Christian doctrine is the only way to save America (Revelations/Apocalypse, anyone?). The subplot with AMH felt like pointless filler with no real purpose other than to give the episode some action at the end.

I personally relate to this show because 1) I'm their age, and 2) I'm also attending junior college. Though I'm now in a Bachelor degree-level program, but it's a 2-year college nonetheless. And thanks to Rona, I now consider these characters my vicarious classmates.

Some hilarious jokes but I thought Shirley plot kind of brought it down

Some of the funniest lines of the season so far but I really thought Shirley's story in the episode wasn't great. Her performance made me uncomfortable.

In honor of "Community"- a review of every episode. (S1;E12- "Comparative Religion")
(This is the twelfth part in an ongoing series, in which I am writing brief reviews of each and every episode of Dan Harmon's beloved cult- comedy "Community." Originally conceived as a response to NBC's cancellation of the series before it was revived for its final season on Yahoo.)

Part of the problem with going back and re-visiting a series you know and love is the fact that there is the inevitability of comparison. By which I mean, you're going to have your favorite episodes from later seasons, and when nostalgically seeing the earlier seasons once again, they might not quite hold up in comparison to those later episodes.

This might be a bit unfair, as especially during a show's first season, the writers, directors and indeed actors are still working on establishing and developing the show as a whole and the characters that inhabit it. So you do need to be willing to cut some slack. But still, on the whole... that comparison factor just cannot be completely eschewed.

Why am I bringing that up here? Because despite "Comparative Religion" being a very decent first attempt at a Christmas/Holiday- themed episode of "Community"... When viewed as a whole series, it just can't measure up to the future holiday episodes. (Including the absolutely amazing Season Two episode "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas" and Season Three's quirky and fun "Regional Holiday Music.")

Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) tries to throw a Christmas Party for the study-group in order to celebrate her own Christian values and ideals regarding the holiday season. However, tensions rise when she comes to realize that virtually every other member of the study- group holds different, even conflicting religious beliefs, which makes her question her plans. At the same time, Jeff (Joel McHale) runs afoul a school bully (Anthony Michael Hall), and it seems an all-out schoolyard brawl will happen... despite it being Christmas season.

It's very solid and to be fair, there's a lot of laughs to be had, but going back, the only real stand-out in the episode is the phenomenally brilliant and gut-busting guest-role from Anthony Michael Hall. It's a great riff on the idea of an alpha-male schoolyard bully (in a college of all places), and his seeming obsession with a certain word for a feature of the male anatomy supplies endless giggles... low-brow though they might be.

It is also very nice to see Yvette Nicole Brown being given some more business in the show, as Shirley is generally one of the more under-utilized characters throughout all six seasons... and unfairly one of the lesser-liked among the fan-base. I think it really has to do more with the writers not knowing what to do with her in a lot of story lines more-so than the character herself or her excellent actress. Shirley's great... she's just not used enough or even always used properly as far as I'm concerned.

Aside from that, it's really just a somewhat generic "coming together for the holidays" episode. Not bad at all. But not great. Especially as noted above... the fact that future holiday episodes turned out amazing and run laps around this early attempt.

I give it a pretty-good 7 out of 10. Obviously worth seeing for fans. Just don't expect a great episode of TV. It's merely decent.

The main plot involves a "rivalry" between Jeff and some other guy, and it's awful. The subplot involves Shirley being awful is more fun, especially her and Pierce being mean to Annie about being Jewish. I think the Chrismas episodes get better later on. At least i hope so.
