Exclusive: Fiona Shaw (Andor), Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and Chaske Spencer (The English) have entered production in NYC on Park Avenue, a new indie drama from Sundance alum Gaby Dellal (On a Clear Day), who directs from her script written with Tina Alexis Allen.
A production of Rimsky Productions and Washington Square Films, Park Avenue follows a mother and daughter who, over a fraught six weeks, reveal secrets, unravel lies and ultimately lay bare the ties that bind. Paralyzed by her life wrangling cattle in Alberta, Canada, Charlotte (Waterston) jumps into her Ford Bronco, flees her over-controlling husband, and lands back in her childhood Park Avenue apartment where she takes refuge with her mother Kit (Shaw). Rediscovering the boy she loved, now her grown doorman Anders (Spencer), and the life she left at 18, the mother and daughter explore shared history, unshared truths and find a way to face both love and loss.

Konami and developer Bloober Team have announced that they’ve entered into a partnership that many fans suspect will eventually result in Bloober Team developing a new Silent Hill game.
Granted, the press release doesn’t mention Silent Hill by name, but representatives from Konami and Bloober Team have strongly suggested that this agreement will eventually result in Bloober Team developing games related to notable Konami franchises. Piotr Babieno, president of Bloober Team, says that “Konami has decided to strategically cooperate with the Bloober Team,” and Konami president Hideki Hayakawa stated that he looks” forward to combining Bloober Team’s and our respective characteristics and strengths to create high-quality contents.” The press release also bizarrely includes the phrase “know-how,” but that’s a matter for another day.
For many, though, the biggest takeaway from this agreement isn’t directly related to Silent Hill, Bloober Team, or Konami, and has more...

Today was supposed to be a big day for Silent Hill and Hideo Kojima fans, at least those who believe an upcoming PS5 game called Abandoned is secretly a new entry in the horror series from the creator of Metal Gear and Death Stranding. But after a week of teasing the release of a new “trailers app” meant to reveal more of the indie title at the center of gaming’s latest conspiracy theory, Blue Box Game Studios’ enigmatic founder Hasan Kahraman released a video to announce the app and reveal had been delayed to August.
Did this quiet the fans who had spent more than a week speculating, deciphering “clues,” uncovering weird coincidences, and hounding the Blue Box Twitter handle for answers? If you think the answer is yes, you clearly don’t know the internet very well.
But let me rewind. If you’ve not been keeping up...

I say this with the utmost respect to what could be a really small studio making a game for Sony. Abandoned (now Survival) could be one of the biggest reveals in recent years for gaming, or it could be a total mess similar to the scale of NoMansSky disappointment or Cyberpunk destruction. I don’t […]

Leo Tolstoy nailed the universal truth about family on its head in the opening sentence of Anna Karenina — “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Family, in whatever shape or size, is always complicated, messy and crazy — but we wouldn’t trade our own for any other in the world (most of the time).

Lives of Quiet Desperation: Edmond’s Masterful, Eloquent Debut
“I stand in awe of my body. This matter to which I am bound,” is the poetic quote form Henry David Thoreau opening Lance Edmands’ impressive directorial debut, Bluebird. Dealing with a tragedy that has a rippling effect throughout a northern rural community in Maine, we’ve seen this type of dramatic dynamic countless times before, yet Edmands manages a haunting portrait of unhappy, increasingly desperate lives within a small community of deferred dreams and staunch facades. Originally premiering at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, the title ends its weary trek through the festival circuit to a much deserved theatrical release, though this type of grim, upsetting drama may have difficulty finding an audience due to its sobering subject matter. Dramatically restrained, Edmands deftly navigates the sadness of disconnect in our daily lives, and how terrible circumstances are often the impetus for waking up from that slumber.

In a small mountain town, 3-year-old Nate goes missing after his father Ethan (Thomas Dekker) leaves him unattended, strapped into the car seat in Ethan's truck. Nate slips out of his car seat, climbs out of the car, and freezes to death in the woods. Before his body is even found, the town is already taking sides. Is Ethan a good father that just made a mistake, or did his negligence cause Nate's death?
Angels Crest is a competent movie up until the last few minutes of the last scene of the movie. The film wanted to explore how parents grieve when they lose a child and how they will blame themselves, even if there was nothing they could have done. Rabbit Hole did a much better job and had the guts to go for a difficult ending.

Title: Angels Crest Director: Gaby Dellal Starring: Thomas Dekker, Lynn Collins, Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Piven, Kate Walsh, Elizabeth McGovern, Joseph Morgan A description or listing of all the recombinant parts of drama “Angels Crest” runs the risk of making it sound more interesting than it actually is. An adaptation of a missing-child novel by Leslie Schwartz, director Gaby Dellal’s wintry indie is a not very subtle and generally unpersuasive stab at tapestral grief-as-elegy. If cinematic skill lies partially in making an audience feel things they’ve felt before, but in new and different ways, “Angels Crest” is a highlighted, underlined, out-of-date textbook, dogmatic about its presentation, no matter how overly familiar it...

Chicago – Six years after her sentimental debut feature, “On a Clear Day,” filmmaker Gaby Dellal has gotten mired in the wintry sludge of her sophomore effort, “Angels Crest.” This is the sort of film that doesn’t stand a chance of being embraced by many viewers, particularly during an awards season crowded with gems. There’s little to recommend here beyond the icily beautiful cinematography and a few strong performances.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
What starts out as an intriguing mystery reminiscent of “Twin Peaks” quickly unravels into a familiar trudge through bleak lives and bad parenting. It’s set in the isolation of a working-class mountain town haunted by drunken souls who mope about while making bone-headed decisions. The ending fails to leave an impact because it’s no less dreary and inevitable than anything that precedes it. This isn’t a story about transformation and discovery, but rather the acceptance of one’s own demise.

If a child dies because his parents are fuck-ups, do those parents still deserve our sympathy? In the opening scenes of director Gaby Dellal’s small-town melodrama Angels Crest, we meet an adorable 3-year-old who lives with his laid-back dad Thomas Dekker in a sparsely furnished garage with broken windows. When the boy asks if they can go play in the snow, Dekker drives him out to the woods so they can build a snowman together, but the kid falls asleep in his carseat, so Dekker leaves him in the truck with the heater running while he tracks a deer ...

There's nothing more tragic and horrifying than the loss of a child, which may be why filmmaker Gaby Dellal ( On a Clear Day ) decided to explore it in her new drama Angels Crest . Based on the book of the same name by Leslie Schwartz, it stars Thomas Dekker ( A Nightmare on Elm Street ) as Ethan, the young father of 3-year-old son Nate, who vanishes when alone in the car in the wilderness outside their small Rocky Mountain town. Lynn Collins ( X-Men Origins: Wolverine ) is the boy's absent mother Cindy, an alcoholic always in trouble whose grief is overwhelming when she learns the son she had to give up custody of is now dead. Over the course of the film, we see how the two of them react and place blame for Nate's death and how the rest of the community starts to take sides on...

If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Self, what would Kate Walsh and Elizabeth McGovern look like as a lesbian couple in a super serious drama about how the death of a child affects a small town?” you both 1) have very specific hypothetical dream inquiries and 2) are in luck. The actresses play a couple in the new film Angels Crest, which recently released its first trailer. Warning: It looks sad – and cold.
However what looks less sad – and downright hot – are Private Practice’s Walsh and Downton Abbey’s McGovern sharing a bed. If anything will get me to sit through what looks to be a chilly, depressing exercise in grief, it’s those two together.
Previous reports on the film discussed Walsh playing a “gruff, no nonsense” lesbian with a partner, but never named her partner. Learning that it will be McGovern playing against her makes this project even more attractive,...

Congratulations are in order yet again, as Magnolia Pictures scores the rights to another Tff 2011 film: Angels Crest. Gaby Dellal's gorgeous piece of cinema brings this 2004 novel to life, which chronicles a series of events in a small Rocky Mountain town. The story centers around Ethan (Thomas Dekker), a young father in the working-class town of Angels Crest, as he faces the tragic consequences of a momentary lapse in judgment while out one day with his 3-year-old son, Nate. A prosecution ensues when a local district attorney (Jeremy Piven) goes after Ethan, which stirs up haunting memories of his own past and leads many of the townspeople to grapple with the pain and confusion of Ethan's thoughtless mistake. The film also stars Mira Sorvino, Kate Walsh, Lynn Collins, Joseph Morgan, and Elizabeth McGovern. Magnolia Pictures will release the film for nationwide theatrical distribution on December 30, 2011. This joins the poster for the film helmed by Gaby Dellal from the script by Catherine Trieschmann, based on the novel by Leslie Schwartz Magnolia Pictures releases the drama on November 25th via their VOD program, prior to sending the film to theaters on December 30th. The small working-class town of Angels Crest is a tight-knit community resting quietly in one of the vast and stunningly beautiful valleys of the Rocky Mountains. Ethan (Thomas Dekker), one of the town's residents, is a young father but not much more than a kid himself. He has no choice but to look after his three-year-old son Nate...

Today's indie trailer may not be the happiest, but at least it looks okay. Apple recently debuted a trailer for Angels Crest, the indie drama that recently hit the Tribeca Film Fest and landed a distributor for a winter release. It's directed by Gaby Dellal, based on Leslie Schwartz' novel, about a father who carelessly leaves his young son alone while he was out in the mountains. It's another small town, snowy tragedy kind of story, reminiscent of Snow Angels, starring Thomas Dekker as the father and Lynn Collins as the mother. The cast includes Jeremy Piven as the Da after Dekker, as well as Mira Sorvino, Kate Walsh and Joseph Morgan. Watch the official trailer for Gaby Dellal's Angels Crest, in HD via Apple: You can also download the Angels Crest trailer in High Def on Apple A small town is divided after a young boy freezes to death,...

Gaby Dellal’s Angels Crest features an all-star cast including Jeremy Piven, Kate Walsh, Thomas Dekker, Lynn Collins, Mira Sorvino and Elizabeth McGovern. The film tells the story of a small rural community during the first snow of winter, when 3 year-old Nate Denton mysteriously disappears from his father’s truck. I have to applaud Magnolia Pictures for not including a major plot point in the first trailer for Angels Crest. I saw Gaby Dellal‘s indie drama at Tribeca earlier this year, and while I won’t spoil it here, I went into details with my full review. While Thomas Dekker (last seen in Kaboom) is the lead here, the most prominent actor in the ensemble is Jeremy Priven, who is taking on more dramatic roles in a post-Entourage career, including another festival film coming out later this year from the same distributor, I Melt With You.
I was impressed at the atmosphere Dellal creates, but cramming in so many characters from this small town in 90 minutes proves difficult. The cast also includes Lynn Collins, Elizabeth McGovern, Mira Sorvino, Kate Walsh, Joseph Morgan and Barbara Williams. Check out the trailer below via Apple.

The Tribeca Film Festival continues on through this weekend, but awards were announced Thursday night in New York for the tenth edition of the festival, making it so that New York audiences will have at least one more chance to see all the winners this Sunday May 1st. These films include Best World Narrative Feature "She Monkeys," a Swedish drama set in the world of equestrian acrobatics where a competition between two young women transcends mere rivalry, and Best Documentary "Bombay Beach," a elegiac look at the denizens of the dusty seaside California town.
Individual honors in the World Narrative Competition also went to Ramadhan "Shami" Bizimana for Best Actor in the Rwandan drama "Grey Matter" (which also picked up a Special Jury Mention for its writer/director Kivu Ruhorahoza), "Black Book" star Carice van Houten for Best Actress in "Black Butterflies," Luisa Tillinger for Best Cinematography in "Artificial Paradises,...

There are a handful of similarities between Atom Egoyan's acclaimed The Sweet Hereafter (1997) and Gaby Della's applause-worthy Angels Crest. Both explore the aftermath of children's deaths in self-contained communities, the difference being in the number of tiny coffins: a busload vs. one. Both are also based on well-received novels: the former by the renowned Russell Banks, the latter by the far less known Leslie Schwartz. Additionally, both are extremely well directed and showcase a first-rate cast.

For all the people crying onscreen in "Angels Crest," I never once felt the urge to cry myself. The problem, I think, is not with what's in the film but what's not in the film, and that's specificity: specificity of character and location. Watching this movie feels like watching some very talented actors putting on an acting workshop, "Advanced Grief in Small Town America." On a technical level, their work is superb. But it doesn't resonate on any deeper level.
Based on a novel by Leslie Schwartz, the film is an intense dirge about the residents of a town trying to get on with their lives after a terrible tragedy. Ethan (Thomas Dekker) drives his son Nate out to the mountains to play in the snow, but by the time they get there, Nate's fallen asleep. When a herd of deer passes by, Ethan follows, and leaves Nate locked in...

As much as going to the theater should be an enjoyable experience, there.s nothing wrong with checking out a sad piece. However, nobody goes to the movies to just wade around in a character.s problems; you need to experience the person.s emotional range in order to understand and appreciate their hardships. Unfortunately, in Angels Crest.s case, there.s no variation of sentiment in the least, just one long depressing note. Thomas Dekker is Ethan, a young father of a 3-year-old boy named Nathan (Ameko Eks Mass Carroll). One cold morning, Nathan wakes up early and convinces his dad to hit the road and take him to the snowy mountains of Angels Crest. By the time they get there, Nathan is fast asleep, so Ethan opts to head out alone to sneak a peek at the local wildlife. Only 20 minutes later, Ethan returns to his truck and...

Actress Kate Walsh racked up the air miles while filming new drama Angels Crest, flying between Calgary, Canada and the Los Angeles set of her TV medical series Private Practice.
The star admits she was desperate to try out a new role and jumped at the chance to portray actress Elizabeth McGovern's lesbian lover, Jane, in the emotional movie, which also features Jeremy Piven, Thomas Dekker and Mira Sorvino.
Walsh had to stick to a strict travelling schedule to make it all work as she was shooting Angels Crest and her hospital drama simultaneously, but she insists it was the best experience.
She tells WENN, "I was so thrilled to be let out of my television show to finally do something other than (Private Practice character) Addison. I was on cloud nine and I had such a great time.

Films filled with tragedy are often in high supply at festivals like Tribeca. These noble independent efforts dealing with grief, mourning, and the repercussions of bad decisions don’t have wide audience prospects nor distributors pining to acquire them. The latest in this category, Angels Crest, comes from director Gaby Dellal, tackling a novel by Leslie Schwartz and adapted by Catherine Trieschmann.
In an earnest opening, a young father Ethan (Thomas Dekker) goes on a trip with his three-year-old son Nate. Although he clearly loves his son, in a moment of negligence, he leaves the boy in his car to explore the woods. After returning from this short trip, he finds his truck empty and a long search by the townspeople results in no luck. The next morning, Ethan uncovers the frozen, dead body of his son and rest of the film follows the path of guilt and blame that...

Actor Thomas Dekker drew heavily on his personal trauma for inspiration as he shot new drama "Angels Crest" - his father was dying as he portrayed a heartbroken dad on film. The former "Heroes" star plays Ethan, a young father whose son dies after a tragic turn of events, in the movie, which also features Jeremy Piven and Mira Sorvino.
Dekker, 23, admits he didn't have to look far to convey the deep emotion he was already experiencing as his own parent was losing his life. But the actor forced himself to separate his personal and professional lives so his own grieving process wasn't played out completely on-screen.
He tells WENN, "That shock (of losing my son in the film) happened naturally... I don't think it's healthy for actors to use personal issues as inspiration. I was hurting so bad on this movie. It was a very painful time because my...

Hopefully you.re ready to see Jeremy Piven.s serious side because in one of his latest films, Angels Crest, Piven really turns on the drama tackling some rather troubling subject matter. The film stars Thomas Dekker as Ethan, a young father who opts to leave his sleeping three-year-old son in the car alone for a matter of minutes. When Ethan returns, his little boy is gone and soon found dead in the snow. Piven steps in as a local district attorney with zero sympathy for Ethan.s grief, looking to prosecute him for his negligence. Piven says it himself; this character is about as far from Entourage.s Ari Gold as he can get. He.s soft spoken, unkempt and evidently being eaten away by his troubled past. However, oddly enough, Piven was .thrilled to play him.. Then again, it.s easy to see why Piven was elated to...

It takes a village to mourn a child. That’s a sort of thesis for “Angels Crest,” which takes a panoramic view of how a town reacts to the sudden death of a three-year-old boy. The entire community is brought into focus, its ensemble cast gathering around the bereaved father and his sorrow while simultaneously grappling with his negligence in the matter. Adapted from the novel by Leslie Schwartz, the film feels very much like a work of literature with its wide scope and thematic breadth. Yet this seems to be both a strength and a weakness, and its rich shared…...

Kate Walsh has stepped back into a world she's come to know so well.
The "Private Practice," star headlines a new indie drama called "Angels Crest," in which she plays a lesbian artist in a small-town tale alongside Jeremy Piven and Mira Sorvino. The perhaps oxymoronic gruff artist was a role she very much enjoyed.
"I loved the character, and the relationship between her and her partner was really interesting to me," Walsh told The Advocate. "There's humor in how she's an artist and kind of gruff and no-nonsense. It's a really beautiful film."
Of course, this isn't Walsh's first time playing a lesbian. In 2005, she played a lesbian in the indie film "Inside Out"; In 2003, Walsh played Sandra Oh's partner in "Under the Tuscan Sun," and had a two episode arc on "Karen Sisco." Walsh played a transexual in a "CSI" guest spot.
Obviously, it's a role Walsh doesn't shy away from.

As I always do, I’ll be taking a closer look at the lineup for any titles worth profiling on this website. The festival runs from April 20th to May 1st. It’s in my backyard, so you know I’ll be covering it!

One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. I hope you've enjoyed reading it all - it's been utterly exhausting but an ultimately rewarding venture I've been single-handedly pulling together since early December. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.
If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. I'm glad many of you have gotten a lot of use out of the previous pages, so I hope you enjoy this final part:

Out of curiosity and sheer boredom, I’ve decided to start up a new column that will run once every week or two here at Reelloop. In Off the Shelf, I’ll randomly pick a DVD or Bluray out of my collection and write a few paragraphs of random thoughts about whatever film my finger lands on. Hopefully I can make some interesting points and draw your eye to a film you might not have seen before!
For my first film, we’ll be looking at Joe Carnahan’s 2006 film Smokin’ Aces.
You’ve got to hand it to Mr. Joe Carnahan, whether you hate Smokin’ Aces or love it dearly — the guy can pull together a great cast, and gets awesome performances out of each member. A quick scan of the IMDb page for the film evokes skepticism: Alicia Keys? Common? (Remember, these were the days before Common was...
