It's great if you are interested in these sports....

Ted Husing must have been quite the legendary sportscaster. After all, he was one of the inaugural inductees into the Sportscaster Hall of Fame--and they wouldn't do this for just any old yokel! However, 80 years later, he's pretty much forgotten and my watching this short was my first introduction into this man.

Although it was produced by First National/Warner Brothers, I initially thought that it was a Columbia picture because there was a blurb on the title page about the Columbia Broadcasting System (not Columbia but the CBS radio network).

The film consists of Husing introducing the audience to three sports they probably aren't familiar with here among the common folks in the USA. However, the introductions are just that--not a thorough explanation of the rules or history--just a tiny introduction. Cricket (which I STILL don't understand), Yachting and Polo are the subjects explored. And, while the information is occasionally interesting, for me I had trouble getting much out of the film because I simply don't care about any of the topics. This doesn't mean they are dumb or bad sports--just things about which I am not particularly interested. Now if he'd chosen unusual sports to my liking such as Australian Rules Football, Sumo and Hurling, then I would have been enthralled. It's all just a matter of taste. And, the production is about average for a 1930s short.

Decent Short That Explains Three Sports

Sport Slants #3 (1931)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Ted Husing hosts/narrates this Warner/Vitaphone short as he explains three different sports: cricket, sailing and polo. Those who enjoy ESPN and shows like Sportcenter as much as I do will probably get a small kick out of this "documentary" that was clearly meant to introduce these sports to people in mid-America who probably had never seen them and might not have even heard of them. I can't imagine anyone in 1931 would have been interested in this thing if they were already familiar with the sports. I say this because Husing really goes into great detail about the rules of all three sports so if you already know them then what's to gain by watching this? I'm not overly familiar with any of the three sports so I did enjoy learning a few of the tricks that I wasn't familiar with and especially during the opening act on cricket. For the most part Husing really goes all out and by the time you're done watching this you'll understand the sports and their rules. The sailing and polo are two sports I'm really not interested in so my attention span was going in and out throughout the final six-minutes of the film.
