The Grammys clearly love Billie Eilish and her work, having awarded her seven times in just the last two years, so with the release of her new album, “Happier Than Ever,” could Eilish still be a strong force to win yet again? If she does it would be historic, and it wouldn’t be the first time she has made history.
Few artists have been as quickly embraced as Eilish at the Grammys. The young singer-songwriter broke through at the 2020 awards with six nominations, winning five of those. Eilish won all four general field categories that night, becoming the second person ever to do so (Christopher Cross did it too in 1981) and becoming the youngest artist ever to win Album of the Year. Not only that, her debut album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” won all but one of its nominations, netting wins Best Engineered Album...

Rome’s growing Mia market, dedicated to international TV series, feature films and documentaries, is on track to take place as a mostly in-person Oct. 13-17 event, for which a robust clutch of top U.S. and European execs are expected to make the trek.
“We are getting a great response: lots of confirmations and great willingness to attend,” said Mia director Lucia Milazzotto (pictured), adding that pulling off last year’s market in the Eternal City as a partly physical event “when the pandemic situation was a lot worse” has “certainly paid off” in terms of getting people to attend this year.
Despite concerns about the Delta variant, certified vaccinations are expected to ensure a measure of safety for the event in October.
While companies such as ITV Studios and Banijay are bowing out from the Oct. 11-14 Mipcom market in Cannes, Mia has recruited an impressive roster of...

New series “Lafayette” will be presented this week at the Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo (Mia), the film and TV market taking place in Rome. Variety spoke to the show’s producer Nicolas Deprost, CEO of the French production outfit Wild Horses, and writer, Oscar winner David Franzoni (“Gladiator”), ahead of the market.
“Lafayette” kicks off in the spring of 1777, when the Marquis de Lafayette, a 19-year-old French aristocrat, sets sail from France for the New World, inspired by the spirit of the American Revolution and determined to hitch his fate to the fledgling cause. There he discovered that the faltering movement rested on the shoulders of one man, George Washington, the general struggling to lead a rag-tag army to victory despite insurmountable odds.
The series tells the story of the father-son bond between the young Frenchman and the man who would become the first president of the U.S., and how...

“Liz And Mia Get Freaky”
By Raymond Benson
Once again, Kino Lorber, a company grandly competing with other “Cadillac” DVD/Blu-ray publishers, has released an esoteric non-mainstream title from yesteryear that might have otherwise have remained under the radar screens of retro movie lovers.
The filmography of Joseph Losey, the American expat who fled the U.S. to Britain after being blacklisted in the early 50s, has been duly represented by Kino. The company has released several of his titles, a recent one being Secret Ceremony, a British production starring American actors in the three lead roles.
Made in 1968, the picture is one odd duck, but it’s got quite the cast—Elizabeth Taylor, Mia Farrow, Robert Mitchum, Peggy Ashcroft, and Pamela Brown. Based on a novel by Marco Denevi, Secret Ceremony resembles some of the avant-garde stage plays by the likes of...

Vicky Jewson’s “Close” transparently aspires to be something of a female riff on Jason Bourne. However, shot in only 29 days — and with a fraction of the budget for an average Hollywood blockbuster — it feels more like a proof-of-concept for an idea that the film industry has already proven, and a dull reminder that studios need to invest more of their resources into it. Whatever inherent value there might be in gender-flipping such a generic template is mitigated by the movie’s reluctance to seize on the unique energy that its women bring to the table.
The film doesn’t have to justify casting a lead who isn’t named Chris or Matt, but Jewson and co-writer Rupert Whitaker (whose previous collaborations include 2014’s similarly violent “Born of War”) may have been too rushed to take advantage of it. If nothing else, this cut-rate thriller should be enough to silence...

I'm always down for a little Noomi Rapace and the actresses next project will see her stepping into the role of a bad-ass counter-terrorist expert/bodyguard for Close, an upcoming Netflix action-thriller written and directed by Vicky Jewson (Born Of War). Inspired by the real-life of the world's leading female bodyguard, Jacquie Davis, Close follows Sam (Rapace) as she's…...

Since breaking through to U.S. audiences after her electric turn in the original Swedish versions of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and its sequels, Noomi Rapace has forged a fruitful career playing no-nonsense, ass-kicking women in mostly genre fare. She earned positive reviews as the lead in Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” though the film was not so fortunate. She struck out again with another critical flop, the Will Smith vehicle “Bright,” a poorly-received stab at Netflix Originals programming. Undeterred, Rapace is returning to Netflix, this time working with director Vicky Jewson on an almost entirely woman-led thriller, titled simply “Close.”
The official synopsis reads: “Inspired by the life of the world’s leading female bodyguard, Jacquie Davis. The film stars Rapace as Sam, a counter-terrorism expert used to war zones, who takes on the job of protecting Zoe (Sophie Nélisse), a young and rich heiress — a babysitting job for her.

Vicky Jewson’s action film Close to benefit from new programme.
Thailand Film Office has announced that the first project to benefit from Thailand’s new incentives programme will be UK director Vicky Jewson’s [pictured] action drama Close.
Scheduled to start shooting in June, the film revolves around elite female bodyguards who offer ‘close’ protection to the rich and famous.
The film will be produced by London and Oxford-based Jewson Film/Whitaker Media, founded by Jewson and Rupert Whitaker to produce films featuring female protagonists. The company’s credits include Born Of War (2014), which Arclight Films handled internationally.
Launched by Thailand Film Office in January 2017, the new incentives offer a 15% to 20% rebate for qualifying productions with a local spend of over $1.4m (baht50m). Several countries were considered for the location of Close, but Charles Salmon of Thai Occidental Productions convinced Jewson to shoot in Thailand.
