Man's Castle.“When you’re dead, you get a hunk of earth. When you’re alive, all you’ve got is that hunk of blue.” This is how Bill (Spencer Tracy), the restless hero of Frank Borzage’s Man’s Castle (1933), explains his insistence on sleeping under the open sky. Borzage’s films always cast their eyes heavenward with exalted sincerity; they offer no sop to modern irony or cynicism. No one should watch them who is not prepared to be enraptured. The essence of Borzage’s romanticism resides in the enchanted spaces his lovers create together: sometimes a semi-permanent home, like the Parisian garret in 7th Heaven (1927), at other times a fleeting idyll of shared fantasy, like the abandoned plantation mansion where the outcast couple in Moonrise (1948) waltz amid the shadows and cobwebs. These magical playhouses are spaces of care and refuge as much as dreamy eroticism; in Man’s Castle,...

Wes Anderson has recruited his next star-studded cast for a new movie led by Bill Murray, Michael Cera, and Benicio del Toro, reports Deadline.
Anderson co-wrote the film with his frequent collaborator Roman Coppola. Details are officially being kept under wraps, but it’s set to go into production this year.
Last June, Anderson gave insight into the movie during an interview with Le Monde. “My next feature film will be linear, with Benicio Del Toro in every shot,” he said. “I can’t tell you much more than that except that it will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and, let’s say, with a rather dark tone.”
Recent reports have also said the plot revolves around “three key characters,” with other Anderson regulars playing smaller roles.
While the currently untitled movie will mark Cera’s first time working with Anderson, Murray and del Toro have previously worked with the filmmaker.

Every year, the Kailey Marsh-fronted BloodList makes waves in the industry as it reveals several high-profile horror screenplays that are available in the market. “While we aren’t releasing the 15th edition in 2023, due in part to the WGA strike and the timeline to when we would accept submissions, it’s a good time to look back at the scripts and writers that have been featured on the list over the years,” Kailey tells us via release.

Another hypnotizing animated music video to enjoy as part of our short film collection. This video is for a track from American rapper Mac Miller titled The Star Room. It's pretty trippy, following a character on a journey. "The storyline begins & ends with a candid embryo-like character, showcasing their growth and transformation through diverse landscapes and encounters." Director Danaé Gosset explains: "My goal was to capture the essence of a transformative journey while maintaining a childlike curiosity towards exploring different worlds." She also says she was inspired by Moonrise Kingdom, because the song takes a sample from the film's soundtrack. "To bring the video to life, we meticulously crafted a hand made layered collage-like technique. We employed a diverse range of physical mediums such as paint, color pencils, gouache, and more." My fave one is the big furry dude, and the super hairy dog creature thing. So much creativity in this.

Jake Ryan first met Wes Anderson when he was just seven years old and cast as one of the protagonist’s little brothers in Moonrise Kingdom, the filmmaker’s 2012 feature set at a summer camp — and the two’s work together has come a long way since then.
Over the years, they’ve kept in touch, with Anderson directing a 2012 stop-motion commercial for Sony that a young Ryan wrote, inviting Ryan to participate in conversations for Criterion Collection editions of his films, and casting Ryan a small part in the animated feature Isle of Dogs. But now, at 19, Ryan has his biggest role in an Anderson film to date.
In Asteroid City, Ryan plays Woodrow Steenbeck, an awkward teen and award winning “Junior Stargazer,” who arrives in the eponymous desert town with his morose father Augie (Jason Schwartzman) and three incorrigible little sisters. Woodrow, who recently lost his mom, is...

Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City brought some mega-wattage to the Cannes Film Festival this evening, lighting up the Palais with what we clocked as a 6.5 minute standing ovation for the star-studded comedy.
Alongside the filmmaker were cast members Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Steve Carell, Hope Davis, Rupert Friend, Rita Wilson, Maya Hawke, Fisher Stevens and even more…
Surrounded, and embraced, by his cast, Anderson said, “I’m so pleased to show the movie for the first time… This is absolutely the perfect room the perfect people to show it to; we’re so happy to be here. And thank you to our cast of stupendous actors playing actors.”

The red carpets are being rolled out, the rosé is being chilled, and the biggest names in international cinema are getting ready to converge on France for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. After a stellar return to form with last year’s event, which followed a delayed and truncated 2021 festival and a totally cancelled 2020 edition, the circuit’s starriest annual event seems ready to deliver another enviable selection of some of the year’s best films.
This year’s festival includes new films from some of cinema’s biggest names, including Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Todd Haynes, Ken Loach, and even Jean-Luc Godard. There are big studio efforts on offer and new features from some of our favorite auteurs.
There’s also already plenty of controversy afoot, from the programming of Maïwenn’s Johnny Depp-starring “Jeanne du Barry” as the fest’s opener to the inclusion of The Weeknd...

Wes Anderson has kept busy the last few years. While putting the finishing touches on The French Dispatch as the pandemic hit––causing the film’s delay for over a year––he was also developing two more movies, both of which will arrive this year. Before his Roald Dahl adaptation of The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade, lands on Netflix this fall, we’ll see Asteroid City. Set for a June release from Focus Features and tipped to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, its first trailer has arrived.

It’s typical – you wait ages for a new Wes Anderson – but before then, we’ll see Asteroid City, a 1955-set romantic comedy with (as you’d expect) a ludicrously stacked cast. In fact, you can read a bunch of those names on the poster, which has just dropped ahead of an impending trailer.
Before we get into those names, first up it’s notable how much this is a return to America for Anderson’s storytelling. Across the last decade, he’s ventured to Budapest, the Isle Of Dogs, and the streets of Paris for his particular brand of picture-perfect productions. But here, it’s all grand, sweeping Americana, desert canyons and bright blue skies – this is his first US-set film since Moonrise Kingdom. In fact, given the period setting and the romcom template, it sounds like Asteroid City might be something like Moonrise meets Rushmore. Here’s the...

In May, the Cannes Film Festival injects a jolt of international cinema into year ahead, and expectations are even greater than usual this time around. In 2022, Cannes was the starting point for everything from future commercial hits “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis” to arthouse successes like “Decision to Leave” and “Eo.” With less pandemic-era stagnation on productions, there are more newly finished (or almost finished) Cannes hopefuls in the mix than anytime in recent memory.
Some of the bigger ones have been widely reported: We already know that Martin Scorsese’s sprawling Osage Nation crime drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” will bring the revered director back to the festival with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in tow, while “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is poised to premiere in an out-of-competition slot 15 years after the last entry did the same thing. Vincent van Gogh’s painting Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear sold for $71.5 million at a November 1998 Christie’s auction. The artist created it after dropping a package off at a brothel for a woman named Rachel, telling her to “guard this object with your life.” That was in December 1888. Van Gogh was an unknown artist at the time. Adrien Brody plays a similar art curator to those at Christie’s in Wes Anderson’s anthology film, The French Dispatch. The first vignette in the three-story film exhibits how commerce in the art world is a cut-throat business, especially when it’s personal.
The French Dispatch is Anderson’s homage to The New Yorker during the magazine’s heyday under founder/editor Harold Ross, fictionalized in the film as Arthur Howitzer, Jr., portrayed eccentrically by Bill Murray. With writers like James Thurber, A.J. Liebling, James Baldwin, and Rosamond Bernier, it was idiosyncratic and utterly original.
