Netflix has announced the cast and filmmaking team for its upcoming family friendly movie series “Ivy and Bean.”
Elissa Down is directing the live-action films, based on the best-selling children’s book series. Down has previously worked with the streaming platform on the musical comedy “Feel the Beat” and the drama “The Honor List.”
Young actors Keslee Blalock and Madison Skye Validum will play Ivy and Bean, respectively, while Lidya Jewett is portraying a character named Nancy. Blalock has previously appeared in “Family Camp” and “Pulled From Darkness.” Jewett’s screen credits include “Good Girls,” “Feel the Beat” and “Nightbooks.”
“Ivy and Bean” centers on two girls who never expected to be friends. However, the quiet and thoughtful Ivy and the playful and fearless Bean soon discover that seemingly different people can become the best of pals. The series, written Barrows and illustrated by Sophie Blackall, has 12 books in total.

Netflix continues to bet big on kids and family programming. The streaming service announced on Friday it optioned the rights to Annie Barrows’ illustrated children’s book series “Ivy & Bean” and plans to make them into movies.
The live-action films will be one-hour in length and geared toward family audiences. Kathy Waugh is writing the movies.
“With a one-hour run-time, the ‘Ivy & Bean’ film series will still very much be movies the whole family can enjoy,” said Netflix’s Director of Family Features Naketha Mattocks. “Safe, fun and elevated comedy-adventures, they also have the wonderful benefit of giving the youngest members of the family an opportunity to see themselves as the star of their own story.”
“Ivy & Bean” follows two unlikely friends — the loud and fearless Bean, and the thoughtful and quiet Ivy. Yet the two discover that an adventure can reveal that even seemingly different people can become the best of friends.

Disney has released a new trailer for their upcoming TV movie remake of the classic 1987 film Adventures in Babysitting. I loved that original movie mostly because, as I've previously stated, I had a crush on Elisabeth Shue.
Disney's upcoming remake looks horrendously awful. The story follows two babysitters, who are played by Sabrina Carpenter (Girl Meets World) and Sofia Carson (Disney’s Descendants). They go on an adventure through the city looking for one of the kids that they’re supposed to be taking care of.
The trailer features the two characters who find themselves on stage in a club in some kind of freestyle rap battle and it’s just one of the worst things ever. My kids are going to want to watch this, but I think I’ll just show them the original film instead.

Elisabeth Shue’s 1987 film Adventures in Babysitting is a classic. It’s one of those movies that I used to to watch all of the time when I was growing up. I totally had a crush on Elisabeth Shue!
Well, the Disney Channel made a remake of that movie and the first trailer for it has been released. The new movie stars Sabrina Carpenter of Girl Meets World and Sofia Carson of The Descendants as two babysitters who have lost one of the kids they’re supposed to be taking care of.
The movie looks exactly like what you’d expect from the Disney Channel. It looks nowhere near as good as the original film, and you certainly won’t be hearing the line, “Don’t fuck with the babysitter,” in a Disney Channel movie.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in January 2020.
A new year will eventually mean a new HBO with the release of HBO Max. But for now HBO Now and HBO Go continue on and are putting their best foot forward with the HBO new releases for January 2020.
Comedy is the name of the game for the HBO originals in January 2020. Larry David returns as Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10 premieres on January 19. Veep creator Armando Iannucci takes his satirical ways to space with Avenue 5 the same night. The New Pope is...sort of a comedy and arrives on January 13. The Stephen King series The Outsider is very much not a comedy but it will come to HBO on January 12 all the same.

Carpenter, 15, will star alongside Sofia Carson (Disney’s “Descendants”) in “Further Adventures in Babysitting,” which is inspired by Elisabeth Shue‘s cult 1987 adventure-comedy “Adventures in Babysitting.” Blanchard, meanwhile, who is just 13, is set to star with Paris Berelc (“Mighty Med”) in the live-action adventure-comedy “Invisible Sister.”

Chris Columbus' "Adventures in Babysitting" is one of those Disney movies that is really quite good but gets glossed over a lot of the time because it wasn't a big hit when it was released and the studio has never really gotten behind it since (although, somewhat surprisingly, a high definition 25th anniversary edition was released on Blu-ray). While a sequel or remake or something has been floated around over the past decade, with both Raven Symone and Miley Cyrus having been linked to the project, it looks like things are finally getting underway on a proper follow-up (according to AdWeek). That's right folks, coming soon to the Disney Channel is.... "Further Adventures in Babysitting."
Set to debut in 2016, almost 30 years after the original film was released (shortly after Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg came to Disney and injected fresh blood and a new sensibility), "Further Adventures in Babysitting...

People in horror movies do the darndest things, don't they? We've all had a "Don't go in there, you idiot!" moment or twelve while watching fright flicks. Horror sure does bring out the stupids.

Whether one of the major studios takes the top prize at the Academy Awards or not, they have no squawk this year.
Several years ago, as you might recall, the Big Guys were getting fed up with having their clocks cleaned in the Best Picture category every year by releases from independent companies. The last time one of the majors walked home with the Best Picture gold was 2006 when Warners’ The Departed took the trophy. Before that, you have to go back almost a decade — to 1997 — to Titanic, split between 20th Century Fox and Paramount.
Over the last decade and a half or so, the indies have usually taken a fair share of the nomination slots and almost always the grand prize. The majors retaliated by pushing for an expansion of...

Box office junkies, unite! It’s time to break down the year that was at the movies using the thing that we love most — the numbers!
Blockbuster franchise films reigned supreme at the North American box office in 2011. Of the ten highest grossing movies, the top seven — led by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 with $381 million — are sequels, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (No. 9, $176.7 million) is a prequel, and Thor (No. 8, $181 million) and Captain America: The First Avenger (No. 10, $176.7 million), while not sequels, are part of the larger Avengers franchise which Marvel will roll out next year.

Chicago – With 2012 staring us in the face like a bad movie concept (oops), it’s time to go over the worst films of 2011, if only to purge the refuse from our souls. If you think film critiquing is martinis with F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald – or the plot to “Midnight in Paris” – then strap in and read on.
If we were to add up the percentages of the 2011 film release year, the larger number of star ratings would fall in the middle to horrible category of the please-please-me range, but that is the nature of populist movie-making. The film business is about demographics and butts-in-the-seats, and what’s on screen – as long as it has a vampire in it – has become irrelevant. Can we all handle that truth? Thank goodness for awards season.
But I digress. Just missing the 10th spot was “Country Strong,” “Arthur,” “Hop,” “Your Highness,” “Take Me Home Tonight” and “The Smurfs.

Yep, The Devil’s Double star Dominic Cooper plays painter Alfred Munnings, a charismatic hell-raiser left blind in one eye, who was a member of the bohemian artists group Lamorna, based in West Cornwall, England, between the years 1911 and 1914. Aspiring artist called Florence Carter-Wood, who is described as looking like Botticelli’s Venus and played [...]

I would say for Immortals to have nabbed the #1 spot this weekend so convincingly is a bit of a surprise, and for me a welcome one the weekend really could have gone to any of the top three films, but somehow Immortals pulled away. Let's take a closer look... Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 0 Weeks In A Row Immortals I enjoyed Immortals but when I look at the 37% RottenTomatoes rating I guess I can understand why Relativity tried to hide it from the majority of critics. Budgeted at $75 million and suffering from a series of box-office busts in Machine Gun Preacher, Shark Night 3D and Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, Relativity needed a hit and they didn't want critics dragging their film down.
Well, most critics did try and drag their film down, but it didn't seem to have much of an effect as Tarsem Singh's war...

It’s been a colorful year over at Relativity. The mini-major has had an aggressive release slate, but most of their output, cast-offs like “Take Me Home Tonight” and “Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer,” failed to generate any excitement, though they scored with the $79 million springtime hit “Limitless.” But this weekend might be cause for celebration amongst Relativity offices, as “Immortals” outdid most projections with $32 million, earning a decisive victory against the surest thing in all of Hollywood, an Adam Sandler comedy. Relativity, which no doubt made a nice chunk of change selling the overseas distribution rights to the very Euro-looking “Immortals,” earns by far the biggest opening in their history thus far. They did it the sneaky way, of course -- the ads might as well have said, “everything in this movie is exactly like ’300’.” Of course, “300” grabbed a...

In search of a story, some were wondering of Relativity's Immortals would be hurt by the launch of new videogames Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim. Then, of course, you have the fact the studio hid the film from several critics, screening it at the last second or not at all. However, it seems doubts can be put to rest as Tarsem Singh's Greek epic scored $1.4 million in midnight showings Thursday night and finished Friday with a combined tally of $15 million. Immortals should end the weekend north of $33 million, an opening Relativity Media needed following three recent box-office busts in Machine Gun Preacher, Shark Night 3D and Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. In fact, of the seven releases Relativity has had, only Limitless has managed to make over $25 million, which means Immortals will be the studio's second best box-office performer by the end of the weekend if not Saturday.

Little sign of franchise fatigue for Paranormal's poltergeists, while Lynne Ramsay has plexes and arthouses talking about Kevin
The winner
Paranormal Activity experienced only minor franchise fatigue with its third outing, grossing £3.41m, including previews of £352,000. This compares with the slightly higher figure of £3.76m, including previews of £453,000, for Paranormal Activity 2 exactly a year ago. The original Paranormal Activity film debuted in November 2009 with £3.59m including more extensive previews of £1m.
Celebrations at Paramount's London HQ may be slightly muted by the fact that the film did so much better in the Us, where it opened with $53m, including $8m in Thursday late-night previews. This compares with a $41m start for Paranormal Activity 2. The new film is benefiting from the death of the Saw franchise, which expired a year ago with seventh episode Saw 3D, and from a total lack of competition in the horror genre, with the Halloween holiday on its way.

Contagion (12A)
(Steven Soderbergh, 2011, Us) Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle. 106 mins
Much as he did with Traffic, Soderbergh connects the dots of a global issue and makes it look like something authoritative and contemporary rather than a celebrity disaster movie. Here it's a viral pandemic, briskly tracked in forensic detail and techno-backed montages. The response from health authorities and the panicked populace is all too credible, though once the dots are connected, we're too freaked out to remember why we were supposed to be watching.
We Need To Talk About Kevin (15)
(Lynne Ramsay, 2011, UK/Us) Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller. 112 mins
Swinton's fine performance and Ramsay's visual intelligence add up to a devastating portrait of motherhood. After a high-school shooting, a mother's existence becomes a living hell.
The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (12A)
(Göran Olsson, 2011, Swe) 96 mins

Watching Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer runs akin to sticking a needle into the corner of your eye and then attaching it to a bag filled with liquefied gummy bears and Mountain Dew. If the sugar of that cocktail doesn’t give you diabetes and push you into a sugar coma, then at least you’ll find consolation in the fact that pushing that much sugar through your eyes will cause blindness and thus prevent half of the film’s assault on your senses from there on out. While it’s not hard to understand why yet another children’s novel was adapted to a film, especially in the wake the success of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid adaptations, but you have to wonder why it had to be this obnoxious and simplistic. There are those children’s films that both parents and their children can enjoy...

Disney's robot fight flick and the Brit-dominated Dumas retelling post poor returns as Rowan Atkinson's spy has the last laugh
The four-way faceoff
It's unusual for so many major features to debut together at 350 cinemas or more, but the start of the October half-term holiday in the UK saw four new films enter the fray in wide release. None landed a knockout punch, with holdover titles Johnny English Reborn and The Lion King 3D convincingly remaining top choices for families.
Top newbie over the Friday-Sunday weekend period was Disney's pricey robot boxing flick Real Steel, grossing a mediocre £1.34m. But thanks to previews on Wednesday and Thursday totalling £428,000, The Three Musketeers lands one place above it in the official chart, with a five-day debut of £1.46m. Considering Real Steel opened in the Us with $27.3m, the UK result is about half what you might expect. Musketeers has yet to open stateside,...

It might have the worst title since Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer, but finally we have some good news regarding A Good Day To Die Hard. The always awesome Paul Walker has been named as one of the contenders to play John McClane's son, alongside some more leftfield choices. Ben Foster, Paul Dano, Aaron Paul and Milo Ventimiglia are all said to be meeting with Bruce Willis next week to try out for the part. That list of actors makes us think that John's relationship with his son is going to be, how shall we put...

If there is ever a time for Jaleel White to bust out the old classic, "Did I do that?" this will be it.
Better known (and forever trapped) as the beloved nerd Steve Urkel from "Family Matters," White has made a solid career for himself since that show ended in 1998, playing bit parts, guesting in "House", starring in "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer" and appearing in two short running TV series, "Grownups" and "Fake It Til You Make It." Now he's got his very own show, as host of the just-announced Syfy game show, "Total Blackout."
The show will feature contestants completing different tasks, but with a title-teased twist: they have to do so in complete darkness. And it won't be just the lack of light that will challenge them; White teased that there will be any number of surprises, including creepy crawling critters thrown around the room.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Big Year - Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Steve Martin
Footloose - Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid
The Thing - Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen
Movie of the Week
The Big Year
The Stars: Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Steve Martin
The Plot: Three avid bird watchers compete to spot the rarest birds in North America at a prestigious annual event.
The Buzz: I was completely unaware of this film until about two weeks ago, when I first saw the trailer. Seems it snuck up on everyone, as there hasn’t been much buzz about it at all. Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin are all, of course, potential of amazing comedy cinema, and it’ll be interest to see how the three play off of each other. If the script is good, these three guys will do it justice. I’m...

After a few slower weeks on the home video front, the DVD and Blu-Ray releases for “Tune In Tuesdays” is off the charts today. From Kevin James’ comedy to Brad Pitt’s existential journey to Jennifer Aniston as a Horrible Boss, home video is on fire this week.
Horrible Bosses: Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey and an unrecognizable Colin Farrell are the Horrible Bosses. Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman and Charlie Day are their employees who cannot take another moment of their psychotic behavior, abuse and discrimination. The comedy is crisp, the performances stellar and the Totally Inappropriate Edition Movie Fanatic saw adds tons of deleted scenes and bonuses making this Blu-Ray and DVD the release of the week.

We’re in the middle of October, the month of Halloween, and the scariest new DVD release this week is The Zookeeper. But no one’s seriously planning on renting that film, are they? That leaves possible drinking games for Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (and honestly, what third grader is going to try that?) or The Tree of Life, and a drinking game for that would get me into more trouble than my review did. So considering it’s the month for scares, and the remake/prequel/reboot/reimagining of The Thing comes out at the end of this week, plenty of folks are revisiting John Carpenter’s 1982 classic. So pour your Jim Beam into your Chess Wizard computer and crack open a Coors. It’s time to go drunk retro with this film, available on DVD, Blu-ray and Netflix Instant. And now, to cover our butts… This...

The Tree of Life It's strange to think how anticipated this film was and how it's just sort of now limping onto DVD and Blu-ray. However, I think of all the films released this year this may be the one people return to and discuss the farther away from 2011 we get.
There are things to be found in this film that I don't believe have yet been discovered or pieced together, and I don't think there are any rules for finding whatever it may be that speaks to you as I can only assume it will be different for each person. I'm anxious to give it another look myself.

Looking back, I've realized how good a summer it has been at the theaters. The other day, the entire Tmp staff recounted our personal favorite films to come out in Summer 2011, and reading all the staff picks beforehand, it dawned on me: this has been an amazing summer for me, for Tmp, and for film fans all over. Before I could fully move on to the Fall movie season, I knew I had to make my peace and deliver a final goodbye to the Summer that was 2011 at the movies.
We here at Tmp have invested a lot of time into Summer 2011. We tackled a huge guide compiling every single notable release of the Summer into four convenient, easy to read articles. We predicted what would be the highest grossing films of the season, and did a pretty damn good job at it (if I do say so my self...

Rounders and Swingers (Blu-ray) I don't remember the last time I watched Swingers, but I previewed this Blu-ray and was laughing a lot. It's also amazing to see Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau so much younger and so much skinnier and yet their style of acting hasn't changed in the slightest. I wouldn't say Swingers is a must own on Blu-ray, but if you don't have it and do enjoy it, you may want to consider it.

Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D
Directed by: Robert Rodriguez
Cast: Mason Cook, Rowan Blanchard, Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven, Joel McHale, Alexa Vega, Daryl Sabara, Ricky Gervais
Running Time: 1 hr 29 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: August 19, 2011
Plot: A step-mom (Alba) and her children (Cook, Blanchard) must stop an evil mastermind named Tick-Tock before time literally runs out.
Who’S It For?: Parents will find this movie to be a good excuse for family time, and will appreciate that the film tells kids to cherish any time with their parents. Kids will laugh at the toilet humor and maybe even catch an imagination bug from the movie’s ideas. Ricky Gervais’ self-amusing quips might help adults stay focused when things get a bit bumpy.
Expectations: This wasn’t screened for critics, which is never a good thing. The “4D” aspect is of course a gag, but...

I love Heather Graham. She has more of an effervescent quality than an acting quality, but that.s perfect when you.re playing a leading role in low-budget, low-expectation children.s movies based on popular kiddy literature. In Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, Graham plays Aunt Opal, a free-spirited Aunt-playing-nanny who hangs out with young charge Moody (Jordana Beatty) as they get up to some ridiculous midsummer nonsense. Even with low expectations, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer bombed at the box office, not managing to even cover its fairly small $20 million budget. However, with its popular titular character, I expect the film to do well on Redbox and with library waiting lists. I.m sure Fox Home Entertainment is hoping for at least that. The company will release Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer onto Blu-Ray and DVD on October 11. For a movie that didn...

When her best-laid plans for a summer full of fun go comically awry, an imaginative young girl creates her own vacation adventure in Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, which stars Jordana Beatty, Heather Graham, Parris Mosteller and Jaleel White.
Judy Moody (Jordana Beatty) is planning the most super-duper, double-rare summer vacation ever with best friends Rocky and Amy. Except that it turns out Rocky is going to circus camp to learn to tame lions, and Amy is headed off to Borneo with her mom to save a lost tribe while Judy stays home with her pesky little brother Stink and second-best friend Frank Pearl.
Just when she thinks things are as rotten as they can be, her parents announce that they will be going to California and Judy will have to stay behind with her Aunt Opal (Heather Graham – Hangover), who she’s never even met! It looks...
