Why bother with this? Rehashed nonsense.
zack_gideon19 January 2023
This movie is pretty pointless and lame to be honest. I found myself just wanting it end. I suppose it's just a cash grab but I just keep asking my self why this even exists.

There's nothing original about it, characters are all non-enjoyable, there's no good dialogue, and it's just exceedingly dark and gory for no reason.

It's a go thru the motions wannabe horror movie with nothing really of value. The editing is pretty bad too when it comes to continuity so you know there weren't many takes and it's just not satisfying to watch.

Overall it's a big NO. Didn't like it all and felt like it wasn't even worth watching. Don't bother. 3.8/10.

The integrity of Stephen Dorff
asdisciple1828 May 2023
Movie was an intriguing idea that could've been really good but the performances were pretty cheesy and I find it ironic that Stephen Dorff feels confident in slamming Marvel movies then does crap like this. It's on par or maybe a half step above Sci-fy channel fluff. I've never seen a worst performance by Emile Hirsch and like I said...the special effects just weren't up to par. Gave slight vibes of Barbarian which was so good but this just completely lacked the depth, performances, special effects and cinematography of a decent horror movie. Sad considering the directors resume contained Midnight Meat Train and No One Lives...the latter being much better but No One Lives was still a lot more enjoyable than this.

Is not bad, but it's not good, either.
wedoitinthedark-2530519 March 2023
With such a great cast you'd think they could've done more? It's worth a watch for any gorehound but be warned - the editing in particular is f'in awful. The end credits also have a comically cheesy track? I have no idea what they were thinking.

That said, it's a decent idea for a plot and the cast do a pretty good job overall. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it, but if you're stuck for something to watch and are in the mood for some decent gore (the practical sfx are genuinely impressive) I'd say give this a go.

Be warned about the editing, though. It really is quite terrible. Headache territory at some points.

This is an awful film...
durham10018 January 2023
With very few redeeming qualities. I like Stephen Dorff and Emile Hirsch and both have acted very well in many things but I haven't a clue why they aggreed to be in this beyond a paycheck. There isn't much wrong with their performances but basically, they are in a remake of From Dusk Till Dawn. The storyline is almost identical but with the badder bad guys being of a different type of evil. Both are just impersonations of Clooney and Tarrantino's characters - the insane younger guy and slightly older wiser chap who tries, unsuccessfully to limit the damage. The special effects are laughable and the ending is just plain silly. I would have loved to have liked it, I love FDTD, but this is such a poor shadow of that film it pales in comparison. It also chucks in some other horror movie cliches and eventually, you just feel like you have seen it all before but done much better.

Meh..
mihaigreeny12 January 2023
Little indie horror violent very short(1 hour and 26 minutes) movie with a subject we have seen so many times! Stephen Dorf is a good actor and he is the only good thing in this movie. Everything happened too fast cuz yeah..the movie is too short to develop something. Two characters robbing a pawn shop, things get nasty, they run, take shelter on a farmhouse were they become the victims of a sadistic serial killer. Except for some brutal scene and yelling there is nothing new in matter of originality. Maybe if the movie was a little bit longer with some charactes development and some back story for the killer..well.. if you want a short slasher with some blood and gore, watch it.. but it's not the best cup of tea..

Torture porn
pomeu-6385011 February 2023
The first half hour is inviting, intriguing almost, even if the dialogue is straight out of an 80's action flick. Okay, pal?

But once the family arrives at the ranch, the movie devolves quickly and exceptionally. First, by going with the lowest possible denominator, torture porn. A training ground for practical effects teams, as well as the refuge of smaller and/or damaged minds. One has to wonder what would make somebody enjoy it.

And then after some minutes of that, things get resolved rather easily and ridiculously. In fact, 40 minutes in the movie does away with all logic and just tries to push the shock all the way to 11. No story, just juvenile drivel.

Entertaining, bloody, over-the-top
PedroPires909 October 2022
Kitamura's films don't always work for me, but I've already realised that it's not just the fact that the director mixes things I really like with things I don't like so much...in fact, it has a lot to do with my state of mind and how I "dive" or not into the film. After the suffering of boredom that was Night Sky (previous film at Grimmfest), I had to refill myself with 500ml of Monster Energy and was prepared for the worst, so all that came was...music to my ears.

As a relatively serious thriller, this works well for almost two full acts, with some good characters and others as annoying as vuvuzelas in my ear for 90 minutes. Then, when everything starts to get more predictable and repetitive, the film pulls out its secret weapon: absurd levels of gratuitous violence, blood everywhere, and some of the most original scenes in recent times. I laughed at and that was the intention. The last act is brutal, it's over-the-top, but it's really fun and this dose of adrenaline was all I could ask for after the traumatic experience I had before. In the midst of a well-known cast, it was the young Gigi Zumbado who proved to be an excellent surprise.

It's not great, but it's not really bad
Boristhemoggy20 January 2023
I've seen a lot of worse films to be honest, and with better known actors.

It's a slasher of epic proportions in the typical Japanese style with lots of blood and gore, and copious amounts of unhuman barbarism to people.

If you're used to things like Saw and the Hostel series of films you're probably going to like this. It's got the right amount of brutality and blood to keep any fan happy.

It's a ludicrous plot, with at times silly dialogue, but in fact it does bring a bit of tension by the clever way it's directed and filmed.

I used to be a fan of Stephen Dorff back in the day but he went off my radar for years until this film. Emile Hirsch was never a great actor, but he's definitely done better than this one. I think the standout was Grace played by Gigi Zumbado. Not a bad role and quite well played all things considered.

Buying the DVD is completely out of the question but if you want a bit of tension, with a few chuckles thrown in for good measure, this is definitely worth a look one night with a friend and a couple of beers.

Has that Blumhouse feel.
Top_Dawg_Critic19 January 2023
This is a decent one-time watch thriller/gore-fest B film that has the Blumhouse production feel to it. It was well directed, with a decently paced cohesive script, that offers plenty of thrills and gore for this genre's fans. It's nothing revolutionary we haven't seen before, but it was done right and it worked well. The comfortable 86 min runtime was used effectively. All casting and performances were great, especially the lovely Gigi Zumbado and Stephen Dorff, but I didn't like Emile Hirsch's character, who was more annoying than convincing, especially with his hilariously lame Harry Potter glasses. Omitting the geek glasses would've gone a long way for his character. Nevertheless, still a well shot film, with the exception the cinematography was too dark in many scenes, but the score was on point for a B film. A well deserved 7/10 from me.

Not Horrible
MonkeySnob2 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie had so much potential to be something better, don't get me wrong it's a good movie but it felt like it was lacking depth to characters, background etc.

Go into this movie expecting little in terms of story telling

I do however appreciate the slasher feel you would be looking for in a movie with gore and blood. I mean a head gets disintegrated by a flying canister.

Whatever the opinion may be good or bad, it's always best to watch something yourself. A bad movie to me could potentially be an amazing movie for you. Don't always take reviews to judge what you watch, everyone's opinions are just that their POV.

Entertaining and Underrated
clownbaby-0600630 June 2023
I almost didn't watch this film because I trust the IMDB ratings and typically don't bother with anything below a 5. I'm very glad I ignored the misguided ranking and watched it, mostly cause it starred Stephen Dorff and Hirsch is good, too. I expected really low budget boring, but got slightly higher budget and VERY entertaining. The band of crooks work well together and create tension from the very beginning. Then, if that's not enough, we get a surprise twist and the film takes a turn. Yes, the genre turn is much like From Dusk Til Dawn, but then again that took the idea from Psycho (for all you haters on here who act like cinema experts but haven't seen anything before the '80s). They give us characters to root for and characters to hate, and I like how they turned a character we hate (Hirsch) into a character we root for. How come Barbarian (good flick) is rated high yet this film with a similar style is rated so low? It's because people were told to like Barbarian and have no opinions for themselves. If you like horror, you'll dig this.

Slaughterfest to the max. Incredibly revolting and shocking. But still somehow morbidly "funny"...
imseeg29 January 2023
Beware: this movie contains visual horror that is incredibly revolting, like cutting someones eyes out. NOT for the faint of hearted.

This movies' first part is a simple heist gone wrong. And that first part is okay.

Then the second part is NON STOP revolting HORROR, only suited for diehard horror fans.

The good: the actors are great. We've got the ever weird but funky Emile Hirsh, who plays an excellent role of a psychopathic killer. Stephen Dorff is as cool and calm and collected as he always is. It's a joy to see these 2 great actors work together, THEY carry this story.

Any bad? I saw this movie on a sunday morning, I had just had my eggs for breakfast and my stumach turned upside down when II was confronted with such revolting horror. It is because of the "comedy" element that I could finish this movie, but I did have to skip some 15 minutes of pure horror, which were just TOO MUCH for me...

(ONLY suited) for the diehard fans of the HORROR genre...

Not worth it
ryanlion-385145 April 2023
600 characters? This film doesn't deserve that many words. I have attempted to make it through this garbage movie a couple times and failed. I don't see anything good at all here. Towards the end it just gets gross and more strange. I wouldn't recommend unless you really love the actors or something. I thought this was a huge miss. It didn't make sense. It was slow. As all the other reviewers stated it is nothing new. So add if all up and it isn't a good flick. Too many other better movies out there to watch. I would rather watch "Smile" again as it is at least well done. There isn't much else to say.

Do not bother
alaskat672 June 2023
This movie was one of those that is so absolutely terrible, you could not even finish it. Really bad acting by more than one, starts off with the guy in the pawn shop. I expected more from Stephen Dorff, but let's face it, he hasn't done much since he was a vampire. I have seen Emile Hirsch in other films where he was not as bad; this was not one of them.

Goes from slight action/thriller to a poor rendition of Hostel meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It could have been a good story line if someone took the time but instead they ruined it. At best, a low budget B movie all the way around. Do not recommend.

Gory Slasher Film
stevendbeard16 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I saw The Price We Pay, starring Emile Hirsch-Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Girl Next Door; Stephen Dorff-Deputy_tv, Blade; Gigi Zumbado-Bridge and Tunnel_tv, Pitch Perfect 2 and Vernon Wells-The Perfect Weapon, Commando.

This is a low budget thriller that turns into a gory slasher film. Emile and Stephen are robbing a pawn shop and take Gigi-a bystander-hostage. When their escape vehicle breaks down in the dessert, they hike to a nearby farm and think they are safe until things can cool down. Unfortunately, the owner of the farm, Vernon, has other ideas. Emile, Stephen and Gigi are soon finding out that they picked the wrong place to hide and have to fight for their lives or they will become involved in Vernon's little side business. The gore is plentiful, if you are a fan of the genre-you know the kind, like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

It's rated R for violence, gore and language and has a running time of 1 hour & 26 minutes.

It's not one that I would buy on DVD but if you are a fan, it would be alright to stream.

I've finally witnessed the worst movie of my life
bstuart0130 March 2023
I feel I have reached a milestone in my life, usually when a movie starts off this bad I turn it off in the first 15 minutes.

Today I turned over a new chapter, and I watched it until the end.

In just the first few minutes you'll notice that the special effects remind you of the old 1980s film FX. Only not as good. From the gunshots, to the gun wounds to just about everything else you could easily pick apart. But that's not all, this comedy continues for the duration of the hour and 25 minutes.

Very sad, great idea though. Horrible cinematography and poor execution. I feel for the decent actors in this movie. Choose your scripts and producers wisely my friends.

I like the tension in the movie
olcayozfirat25 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Horror movie of 2022. The movie reminded me of (see: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and (see: Frontieres). It's a quietly released movie for horror movie fanatics. I like the high tension. It's one of the few movies I've ever watched without getting bored. If you say cliché, from start to finish. Fiction is completely predictable. However, it still arouses the curiosity of the audience and locks it onto the screen.

To give information about the subject; A group of robbers rob a gas station and take a girl hostage there. While escaping with the girl's car, the car breaks down. Among them, they see a farmhouse closest and hide here. But the hosts are not normal people. This gang is falling prey to the ranchers.

Ahh coincidences and the easily fooled child

There is no sex or nudity in the movie. But brutality scenes abound.

SKIP this thing, Instead go watch the The Golden Glove 2019, A bit different genera but definitely worth watching.
Alba9019 January 2023
Did Emile Hirsch suddenly forgot how to act or he simply realized what kid of a mess he has signed for and decided to act like a clown! The rest of the cast are equally bad! Not even a single person acted properly in this mess! But to be honest there was nothing to work with!

Loved the part the villain was explaining his motives :D

There is No logic in this movie!

You can fight a huge person with opened chest, A human can beat the hell out of you while their face is totally cut of, And more...

This movie is just awful in every sense!

I don't wanna waste anymore time on this, It's laughably bad but Not "The room" Entertaining bad, WTF was that bad.

Solid Acting for a B Movie (Would Recommend)
tober4-460-97561722 January 2023
Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorf both play great roles and they do it well. The storyline is a bit played out but there are some very imaginative blood and gore scenes that keep you watching.

I was very impressed with Emile Hirsch's acting in this movie. He plays the perfect maniacal crazy that you just want to hate. And Stephen Dorf plays an army medic who is hired to help out on a heist that goes severely wrong.

It's a solid B++ movie I would definitely recommend it to others. If you like the blood and gore genre. This movie will be on the top of the blood and gore B++ genre.

Watch it for yourself and find out!!

Worth watching but what
nicholas_marano23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The best scenes maybe we're played out too slowly to keep up the budget for the movie. The best characters may had been taken out to quickly for this movie. But I'd say worth a watch if you want a quick fun one at the end of the night. Ps: the explanation by the Doctor is so dumb my 7 year old sister actually wrote it, im pretty sure she got credit on the movie.

Nah for real this movie is worth a watch when you're trying to find a quick gore flick, almost like a hill has eyes with a bad story. It's entertaining though, you wish they would of drawn out the blind scene with Emile hirsche, as well as just making this a no explanation horror bath, instead of trying to make something up, and add a cyborg monster character. But fun!

Not meant to be taken too seriously
jonolson-9392329 May 2023
I gave it 10/10 to offset the ridiculous 1 star reviews. My actual rating is 6/10. This is a horror movie with over the top unrealistic gore. That's what it is and that's all it tries to be. I am a fan of that type of horror. If you are too, this will definitely entertain you for an hour and 25 minutes. Another reviewer said it's a rip-off of From Dusk Till Dawn, but the badder bad guys are a different type of evil. I can see what they mean by that, but I don't see why that's a problem. I watch a different horror movie almost every night and most are not very good. It's extremely hard to find one I haven't already seen that I enjoy. This one I enjoyed.

Solid B movie
haskel-7295114 January 2023
I had major doubts about this one. Any time I see Grindstone Entertainment listed as in the opening credits my expectations drop. After all, Randall Emmitt and George Furla are responsible as producers for more pure garbage than any other tandem working today. This one though, it rose above its obvious trappings. The cast is strong: the underrated and undercast Stephen Dorff, Emile Hirsch - who is working his way back from cancel culture hell, and Vernon Wells. Wells is downright criminally underrated, almost to Stephen Lang's level of under appreciated. Add the director of Midnight Meat Train and you have a strong entry in the genre, even if it doesn't break any new ground.

Tedious waste of time
Groverdox6 October 2023
"The Price We Pay" is one of those movies that never gives you a way in. You watch it like it's a muted conversation happening from afar where you can't really hear what the people are saying. You see action, you see people occasionally getting animated, but you don't really know what it's about, and you don't really care. The people involved in the "conversation" (or movie) don't seem interesting and the way they behave is strange in an obnoxious and unprepossessing way.

The plot: Emile Hirsch, Stephen Dorff, and some other guy rob a place and take a woman hostage, after shooting the owner of the place dead. They hole up in a barn, where they find the owners have a disturbing secret.

The movie does a bunch of things wrong right away. It begins with a sex worker getting dumped at a gas station and apparently abducted. The movie surely could have found a way to make you care about the plight of the poor woman, but it just doesn't. Everything about it is oddly distancing. And what is this scene even doing in the movie? I know, it's supposed to be foreshadowing and build suspense and all that. But then why is it set in a gas station, when the crux of the movie is set in a farmhouse? We're supposed to believe that the evil farmers also abducted that girl. We don't.

More annoying than that, though, is the behaviour of the abducted girl. She is almost killed in the robbery at the beginning of the movie, and she sees a man die right in front of her. Then, his killers take her hostage. Would you believe that she not only does not appear traumatised at all, she also doesn't even appear afraid? You would believe that? Yeah, me too. It's just so lame, though. Is this that "badass" garbage every movie's had for so long now, you know, the girl power crap? All it does is diminish the character, making her lame, unbelievable and unforgettable, and harms the movie itself. As the only non-criminal character, she should be the one the audience empathises with. To do that, she has to appear to feel how we feel. She doesn't.

It sucks, because the movie was directed by Ryûhei Kitamura, the guy who made the fantastic "Midnight Meat Train" adaptation. It also features Australian actor Vernon Wells, who played the bad guy Bennett in "Commando". He pops up in the strangest places. Looking at his IMDB page, he seems to be averaging a dozen or so roles every year. Is he the busiest actor no one's ever heard of?

Vernon Wells is probably never a bad choice for a villain, but Emile Hirsch was definitely miscast here. He was perfect in "Alpha Dog" as the rich kid who thinks he's a gangster and lets his sycophantic friends' praise go to his head. He's believable as a tough-guy wannabe, because he's never generally menacing. Here, he tries to be that, but to no avail.

Stephen Dorff is suitably craggy as a hard-bitten ex-army medic who has turned to thievery. Other than that, none of the actors make an impression, especially the girl, whose opportunity to create a character we cared about was stolen from her based on the limitations of the screenplay outlined above.

I was going to say that the violence sucks, but there was one cool scene, where a guy's head explodes after being pulverised by a flying canister. There's also a nifty scene where a person (couldn't tell if male or female) is torn apart by barb wire, so there's two cool kills in it.

And then it's over, thank god.

Unsettling scenes, terror and tension after a criminal gang commits a robbery
ma-cortes12 November 2023
The picture is full of suspense, thrills, mystery, and lots of blood and guts. This noisy as well as visceral film contains images of graphic violence and may not be suitable for all audiences, viewer discretion is advised. The movie contains a pernicious as well as strong stuff. This slick gore-feast is a triumph of style over movie logic. It's packed with overwhelming body count, excessive gore, grotesque killing, and rivers of red blood. Later a pawn shop robbery goes askew, two criminals , Alex (Emile Hirsch) and Cody (Stephen Dorff) escape . After the intense holdup at the pawnshop, Grace (Gigi Zumbado) is taken hostage by the thieves. Ignoring all the warnings they are looking for a shelter in remote farmland . They take refuge at a remote farmhouse to try to let the heat die down, but find something much more menacing. They discover a secret dungeon with evidence of sadistic violence-and when "Grandfather" comes home, all hell breaks loose. Can Grace muster the courage to escape the gut-wrenching fates that befall her criminal companions?. Their destination becomes a nightmare !. Reap what you sow !.

This frightening movie displays terror, shocks, hard-edged drama , and creepy images . While the look is suitable atmospheric and scary, the storyline stretches plausibility to the breaking point that's the best part of the flick. Run-of-the-mill terror film in low budget packing grisly horror, mayhem, horrible gore and lots of violence and gore. From the director of 'Midnight Meat Train' comes this gripping and horrifying thriller starring Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) and Stephen Dorff (Blade), in which a group of delinquents forced to take refuge at a remote farmhouse late at night, then they stumble across a psycho family, dispatching them unceremoniously and mercilessly. Later, they wind up in the nightmare clutches of a psychopathic butcher who'll kill here and there, carrying out a brutal and homicidal slaughter. The story is not original, because the film's plot is similar to other many films and better stories included the famous film ¨The Texas Chainsaw Massacre¨ that was really influential, borrowing several images from this classic movie, including a horribly mutilated criminal who bears remarkable resemblance to 'Leatherface'.

The picture is smartly designed, but being very mediocre and stylishly photographed, filming in shades and lights. Film craftmen create a creepy make-up of horrible and bloody images. The gutsy murders are gruesomely executed and equally are ghastly graphic. The pic is formed by some acceptably done horror set pieces with creepy and spooky atmosphere. The gruesome murderer appearance deliver the goods with hair raising chills, full scares and scary frames. Screeching and eerie musical score with frightening sounds and appropriate cinematography with dark atmosphere by cameraman Matthias Schubert and the camera often assumes a pointedly aggressive stance. The motion picture was regularly, though skillfully written/produced/directed by Ryûhei Kitamura. He was born in Osaka, Japan and has been shooting both in Japan and in United States, directing films in all kinds of genres: action, thriller, adventure, samurai, wuxia, but also with a special penchant for Terror, including these following films: ¨Heat After Dark¨ (his film debut), ¨Versus¨, ¨Lupin the Third¨, ¨Downrange¨, ¨Baton¨, ¨Lovedeath¨, ¨Azumi¨, ¨Live¨, ¨Longinus¨, ¨Sky High¨, ¨Aruzami¨, ¨Doorman¨, ¨Midnight cinema¨, ¨The midnight meat train¨, ¨The Price We Pay¨, among others . Rating: 4.5/10.

I was being paid to watch this movie (watched it at work) and I wasted my time.
jacobmeudt21 January 2023
First off. To give this movie anything more than a 1 star is way too nice.

I guess I can give the production and post-production crew credit that they knew how to use their equipment in capturing an image. I would not give this same credit to whoever wrote the screenplay. Oh yeah, the editing... not too happy with some of the effects they used. I thought there was a problem with my copy and it was skipping, only to figure out that this terrible effect was done on purpose.

There was not much of a story to this horrible mess of a waste of time. The characters were idiotic, poorly acted and I could have cared less about any of them.

I was looking forward to seeing this, the trailer grabbed my attention and I like Stephen Dorf and the other dude... I was totally disappointed.

If you were wanting to watch this movie go watch something much better: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, House of 1000 Corpses, Evil Dead.
