The stars weren't right, again...
paul_haakonsen5 July 2022
Stumbling upon the 2021 movie adaptation of the H. P. Lovecraft short story "Dreams in the Witch House" here in 2022, I needed no persuasion to sit down and watch this movie from writers Bobby Easley and Ken Wallace.

However, I have to be honest, while the movie's cover/poster seemed interesting enough, I must admit that I wasn't really harboring much of any high hopes for "H. P. Lovecraft's Witch House", since the majority of attempts to put Lovecraft's work to the screen has been dubious at best. But hey, director Bobby Easley deserved a fair chance with "H. P. Lovecraft's Witch House".

"H. P. Lovecraft's Witch House" is a mixed bag of nuts, so to speak. The production value in this 2021 movie is good, and that definitely counts for something. The storyline, however, well while it is influenced by the Lovecraft short story, the writers were definitely enjoying some creative freedom with the script. I have to say that I prefer to read the short story over watching this movie.

Yeah, "H. P. Lovecraft's Witch House" was not an overly impressive foray into the cosmic dread of Lovecraft's Mythos. Sure, the movie was watchable, but it was someone on the B movie side.

Now, I am a huge fan of the Mythos and the universe that H. P. Lovecraft created and that countless of authors have expanded upon in his wake. But this movie just wasn't particularly impressive.

My rating of "H. P. Lovecraft's Witch House" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Waste time
ellybum10 April 2023
If you want to waste some time then I guess you could watch this.

Rated 2 only because of obligatory sex scene, could have contained more nudity to make it worth the watch but it starts out like a bad p0rn0 anyway the acting is that tinny.

I've managed to watch just over half and it's a task to try and finish the film.

I've seen TV series do better interpretations of H. P. Lovecraft, Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities is a million percent better than this shambles

This could have been an awesome film if only the budget was not so low and the lighting for some reason is so dark its hard to make out what's happening, maybe that's a bonus.

Here We Go Again.

Another "Adaption" of a H. P. Lovecraft short story, and once again the writers have no real idea what the story is about and therefore create a new story an attribute it to Lovecraft to get an audience.

They take a few salient points (student, math, other dimensions, stolen children) and write a story.

This story has a female lead. She is working on the principle that right mathematics and geometry can create a portal to other detentions. Because an ex is seeking to get her, her professor sends her to a remote house for her safety. This of coarse puts her right in the sights of an occult group seeking to resurrect a long dead witch.

The reminder of the film is a collection of events to bring this about.

Save your tine and read the original H. P. Lovecraft.

So incredibly bad it broke my rating system
siderite12 August 2022
Usually I reserve one star reviews to things so bad as to be funny. I wanted to rate this 0 stars, though, as in bad as to not be worth being called a film.

Why do they use Lovecraft stories in idiotic student quality movies? Because they are out of copyright. And therefore morally, creatively and financially bankrupt people attach their filth to Lovecraft's name simply because they can.

You can see how Lovecraftian this story is when I tell you the protagonist is a bisexual physics student moving in the attic of a house because some guy was stalking her. She moves around in her underwear, she has sex with a girl in the house, the starts dreaming of dark rituals, there is even a kind of tentacle rape scene in it. The only thing remotely Lovecraft is the rats, which in his works would have inspired loathing and disgust, but in this movie they are just really cute.

The sound is atrocious, the acting really bad, the plot nonsensical, there is no horror (except the gory desecration of Lovecraft's name), the editing is stupid and there is no directing to speak of.

Bottom line: I think the guy just wanted to have sex with young actresses. Avoid this like the plague.

Really!
panther_husky12 July 2022
This film actually won awards? Wow, I am lost for words here. Ok, let's move on. This adaptation is an insult to Lovecraft's story. (9 awards? Really?) Of course, let us use some female sexuality in here: naked, sultry, sexy, it will surely interest some people. They could have worked on the acting instead but no, sex sells. (There must be a typo with the 9 awards won.) What is happening with films in this day and age? So much rubbish, no originality and films winning awards. It must have been a family and friends award night.

The only award this movie should have received, is The Worst Movie of All Time Award. I am so sorry I wasted 1.5 hours watching this. Rented it on Amazon Prime and it is available for another 47 hours....yay!

So Boring My Soul Fell Asleep And Slipped Out of My Body
icocleric28 January 2024
I am a fan of Lovecraften horror, so I thought I'd give it a go even though it had a bad rating, and I wish I hadn't. Like how do you make Lovecraft's work boring?? How!? There's even lecture scenes were they just managed to make it even more boring, the delivery of the lines is just so flat.

This was mixed with periods of no dialogue over trippy scenes. Like why not edit parts of the lectures over these scenes? Rather than showing people also bored out of their minds?

There is no tension, no horror. The acting is terrible, the editing is atrocious. The plot is really weak. It's all round terrible. There is also a tentacle r*pe SCENE. Honestly it's not even funny bad, just boring.

Passable Occult Tale
thomandybish-151141 February 2024
A movie lensed to cash in on the marquee value of H. P. Lovecraft's name, this Indiana curiosity has its strengths. Unfortunately, those don't include competent acting or a coherent script. Filmed in a historic 19th century house, the story concerns a grad student who has moved to said house to avoid an abusive ex. She's writing a thesis on geometry somehow providing the doorway to another dimension, or something. The film kicks into high gear when said student pierces this other realm. Fever dream sequences of Satanists and witches cavorting naked in occult rituals abound, which seem to be the director's strong suit. Murder and mayhem ensue. There's probably some half-baked message about female empowerment in here, but it's lost in the bad acting, wild occult rituals, and gore. Just enough here to hold your interest.

Could be better
eaglesbabe30 January 2024
I don't think Lovecraft would be ALL that happy about this film. It needed more something besides failed actresses and nudity. I want a good horror movie not a porn or nudity..if so,atleast have it fit with the storyline and not just shoved in a reviews for the perverts.

It wasn't easy to sit through it and be captivated into the movie.

Then again, that's hard these days to get into a movie; been done before, boring and pornographic/nudity.

If that's what is needed, move along and try again..

I hope there's a better remake with this movie and alittle bit more of the book in it aswell.

I give the movie a C- and that's being generous.

HP Lovecraft would be enthused IMO
elenismassage7 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
On the run from an abusive ex she thinks wants to kill her, Alice stays in the Hannah House, a house with a very dark past. Now that would be spooky to most but not Alice, as she's a graduate student trying to prove the possibility of alternate dimensions, and Hannah House might be the key to her research.

Living in Indiana, I can say the Hannah house is very spooky! Being a place, that in the past was an underground railroad stop ads to the historic value of this location. The house is known for its visits from the spiritual world.

I was able to see this film at the awesome movie premiere at the Indianapolis Art Center. What a fantastic event. I'm glad I got to see the film on the big screen! I believe Bobby Easley and the cast and crew did a brilliant job!

A film that certainly does H. P. Lovecraft proud.

Fun enough for what it is but let down by some factors
Trying to get away from an abusive relationship, a woman manages to find a room in a strange house that she uses for her studies into the occult and various figures looking to access alternate dimensions, but when she realizes their true purpose tries to stop it from happening.

This one managed to prove enjoyable enough for what it is but does have some problems. Among the few positive aspects on display here stem from the highly intriguing and layered setup that comes into play here. The fact that there are several interconnected storylines at play here, starting with her abusive past and the need to move out into the house to begin with brings us into her mindset rather early on while the decision to study the mystical forces going on around her gives off a great reasoning to stay there once things start happening. The connections made here by the various forces throughout history and what she's studying that are slowly unveiled through her studies and research into alternate dimensions that becomes a driving force throughout this one even before taking into account the secondary storyline about the series of mysterious child kidnappings going on in the area around her that is brought up occasionally. These setups are then put to use rather nicely in a series of impressive supernatural attacks and sequences involving the demonic beings coming through their dimension into ours. The initial sequences of the purpose behind the figures being built with the math overlaid over everything to prove her point which causes a series of strange visions and hallucinations about the creatures to appear in shadow around her are quite fine and start to hint at what's to come. The two big occult-based sequences here, the dream of the abducted baby being sacrificed and then being put under the spell of the witches to allow the demonic curse to come to bear on her, are chilling enough bringing the full force of the demonic entity's power on display. That comes to pass in the big final confrontation, featuring enough fun gore and a rather nice series of scenes that give the final battle some stakes here which come together into making this one quite fun for this kind of effort. There aren't a whole lot of problems here but it's got some detrimental factors. The biggest drawback to this one is the rather obvious and somewhat limiting low-budget on display which provides several smaller factors with it. The first of these is that it's oftentimes way too dark to be able to see clearly what's going on, rendering much of what's going on so briefly observed through its shadowy creation that we can't see anything clearly. The scenes of the sacrifices taking place by the demons, the scenes of her in the attic, or just any kind of sequence taking place at night comes off with a haze that renders it quite difficult if not impossible to make out due to the low level of lighting on display, and with a bizarre green filter run through everything that makes for an even more rough time figuring out what's happening. With the gore scenes also looking rather cheap and flimsy in their execution, there's little about this one that hides its low-budget nature and is what holds this one back.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, and Nudity.
