For the second year running, the South by Southwest film festival in Austin Texas has presented an award for Excellence in Poster Design. As far as I know this is the only major film festival that has such an award, but correct me if I’m wrong. The award was open to all films accepted for SXSW 2010. I had been rooting for Cold Weather to win and I had thought it was a shoe-in, but I had underestimated the depth of graphic talent at the festival. Fittingly for this music town, a lot of the posters (many of which were for short films) seemed to be channeling the energy and invention of the gig poster scene. Unlike most theatrical release posters, they have less of an eye on the market-place and more of a simple desire to grab attention in a crowded field. Which isn’t to say there isn...

Acclaimed Winnipeg filmmaker Guy Maddin has won the Best Experimental Short award at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival for Night Mayor. The film is a fictional documentary about Bosnian inventor Nihad Ademi who, in 1939, built a machine that harnessed the power of the Aurora Borealis to transmit images of Canadians to themselves.
Created as a tribute to the National Film Board of Canada’s 70th anniversary, Night Mayor playfully twists concepts of fact and fiction. Maddin describes the film as a documentary, even though his subject never actually existed, since it was shot documentary style with no planned action or script. Maddin assembled his cast and crew to document Ademi’s story as it may have happened and captured the action in his uncanny style of recreating time periods.
To see the director at work and to hear him describe his process, embedded below is a making-of clip posted on the Nfb’s website.

Though SXSW 2010 is only at the halfway point, the music portion is about to kick into high gear and many film folks are leaving town. The awards ceremony was held last night, and Jeff Malmberg's Marwencol and Lena Dunham's Tiny Furniture won jury awards for best feature-length documentary and narrative, respectively.
Audience awards went to For Once in My Life (documentary) and Brotherhood (narrative). As if often the case, I haven't seen any of the winners, so can't comment further on them, but we do have a review for Marwencol up on the site, which is linked below.
Here's the announcement provided by the festival:

When do children really take that first step towards understanding human sexuality? Love and sexuality must be a confusing thing to a kid, especially in today.s society where they.re inundated with images and language and ideas pertaining to the topic more than ever before. While this isn.t necessarily a bad thing, one question emerges. from where and how will children attain their initial understanding of these ideas and human emotions?
Equestrian Sexual Response addresses some of these general themes, written by Courtney Stephens and directed by Zeke Hawkins. The story is of a young pre-teen girl named Alice (Christina Robinson) who lives with her father (Scott Roberts) on their horse farm. Alice.s mother has left, leaving her father to raise Alice on his own, uncertain of exactly how to connect with his daughter and understand what she is going through as she grows up and begins to experience new things.

Equestrian Sexual Response is a touching and beautifully creepy short that sets a story of pubescent awakening against the backdrop of animal husbandry (figure it out).
This AFI Thesis film was directed by Zeke Hawkins, whose moody, naturalistic approach hits exactly the right tone for Courtney Stephens' screenplay. As one might gather from the trailer, this is a well-crafted work that will send the viewer's imagination racing in all kinds of uncomfortable directions.
