I've watched many of the comedy sketches by this creator. The characters and plot twists are hilarious and have made me laugh a lot. I expected him to go next level for a feature length film. However, I was left disappointed.
The production is about on the same level as the short sketches, which is not too bad. But the writing is too shallow. There is no story arc, no character development or anything that is expected in a feature length film. No satisfying ending to any idea that has been brought in. They didn't think out of the box to make something worthy for the cinema, they just treated it like a longer comedy skit.
Bai Ivan basically gets invited to a TV show in another city, travels there, loses and comes back, and most of the runtime is the travelling, with Bai Ivan and his wife arguing. On the way they go through troubles, but none of it matters or feels consequential in any way. In 10 minutes everything is back to normal every time. The character writing relies too much on stereotypes instead of being more original and memorable. Even in the short skits they had more personality. Many of the jokes are just - one of the characters missing the point to something or misunderstanding something, and the other trying to explain it to them. It gets old quickly and is overused to a cringeworthy level, just to extend the runtime.
Maybe it would be funnier for young children, however many of the jokes and the only "plot development" are about the state of Bai Ivan's marriage, which wouldn't be relatable to young children at all. So it ends up not being great for any target audience. There is a side plot, if I can call it that, about the couple's apartment being robbed while their son plays video games. It leads to nowhere, except a lame scene where the couple comes back home and yell his name, and the credits roll.
The only reason I'm giving 4/10 is the hitchiker character. He absolutely carried this movie and made me laugh a lot. Most of it wasn't even him talking (like the other characters do excessively), just his expressions and what he is doing in the background while the boring main "events" are occuring. The part with the cooking show I almost slept through, but the scene where the hitchiker wanted to hijack the car parked outside to go buy food, but put it accidentally in reverse and said "fast and furious" before almost dying was completely hilarious.
Overall disappointing, but still mostly watchable film. Definitely not worth going to the cinema for. It needs a slightly more engaging plot, and maybe try to create more comedy situations with less talking. There's too much focus on characters just blabbering and throwing stereotypical phrases around. Might be engaging for 10 minutes when you're bored and scrolling on social media, but it's definitely not good enough for a feature length film.
