It's Fright Night on The X Factor this week and boy, wouldn't you know it! Not only are the acts all singing 'Fright Night'-themed songs (or, well, they're supposed to be) but one of them will be booted out before the night is out after Simon Cowell got fed up with them all for not trying hard enough. If that's not all scary enough, The Script will be popping along to perform.
So join us when the show starts at 8pm as we find out who gives us thrills and who gives us chills. And, of course, who's having a right nightmare and will have to leave the competition...

Activision's Prototype is no stranger to the 4-color treatment, having received a comic adaptation courtesy of DC's Wildstorm imprint back when the first game was released. Now, in preparation for the springtime release of Prototype 2, Dark Horse Comics are releasing a 3-part miniseries that bridges the two games. More details from Joystiq after the break. The three comics will be released digitally via Dark Horse's website, and each focus on a different aspect of the Prototype mythology. The first issue follows the exploits of the mutated Alex Mercer, the second centers on a group of survivors, and the third introduces us to Sgt. James Heller, who we'll be playing as in Prototype...

From the mind of the infamous editor of Bleeding Cool, Rich Johnston, comes a three-part tale of gruesome gossip: The Many Murders of Miss Cranbourne, set to premiere in Dark Horse Presents #8!
Have you ever wondered how amateur detectives keep stumbling over dead bodies? Miss Cranbourne doesn’t. Because she kills them. Then finds someone else to pin the blame on.
In “The Vicar Slash’d from Side to Side,” Miss Cranbourne is at odds with the local man of God, and so introduces him to his maker. But in a 1940s English village held together by gossip and sharp looks, how will Miss Cranbourne ensure people look in the direction she’d prefer? And what happens when a man from Scotland Yard arrives to take over the case? This is Dexter meets Miss Marple.

Because I’m trying to kiss the ass of DC Comics.
The end.
Well that’s not really true. If you know anything about my history you will know the last thing I’d ever do is kiss ass.
It’s simply not in my DNA not now, not ever. I’ve been in many a situation where a well place smack on someone’s ass would have been very beneficial to me but I just couldn’t do it.
I’ve tried to kiss some ass. I really have. I wanted to kiss some ass. I was even looking forward (she was fine) to kissing some ass at one point but I just… could… not…do it.
What always stops me is my inability to show respect to those who do not deserve it.
Respect is a very big thing with me. I’d rather have someone’s respect than just about anything else.

If you're like me, you love horror stuff from any generation. The '30s, the '50s, '70s, presentd day...it doesn't matter. It's in the genre and I dig it. But there's something about vintage horror stuff that's appealing. I know when I see old movie posters I want them because they simply don't make posters like that anymore. There's just something charming about things from an era that I didn't come from.
I've spoken previously about the resurgence of horror in comics, but Dark Horse is now trying to bring back the old horror comics for the new era. In the hardcover collection of Eerie Archives Volume 9 we get reprints of five classic issues of Eerie magazine. This publication is easily before my time, but I'm familiar with the idea of these types of books (thanks to my love for Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow). Using...

Looking for an excuse to revel in blood and body parts while the rest of the world goes caroling? Trying to find something to comfort your disturbed soul during December’s holiday stress and mayhem? Since Hollywood seems to stay away from scares during the Yuletide season, look no further than your local comic shop. Comic book publishers have been delivering the goods when it comes to horror series lately, and these titles are sure to have you giggling ghoulishly from now to the New Year. So snap them up. Or, even better—hand the single issues out as holiday presents to insufferable relatives who insist on displaying “holiday cheer”. A bit of merry doom will do them good.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

With January 2012 poster selection leaving a lot to be desired—dump month movies don’t appear to get the same marketing budget as critical darlings—we’ve decided to better spend our monthly entry with the past year’s greats.
You won’t see any text on faces a la The Adjustment Bureau, In Time, or Warrior gracing this list nor that fantastically framed Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol poster that just missed scoring a spot. Instead there is a lot of white space and the fearless exclusion of celebrity faces.

Development continues on the animated feature "The Goon", based on the Dark Horse Comics comic book series, first published in 1999, from writer/illustrator Eric Powell.
The new film is being co-produced by Dark Horse' Mike Richardson ("The Mask") and David Fincher ("Fight Club") for Blur Studio, Inc.
According to the comic books, 'The Goon' was an orphan raised by his 'Aunt Kizzie', a side-show 'strong-woman' in a carnival.
When wanted gangster 'Labrazio' makes the carnival his hiding place, Goon sneaks into his trailer. Labrazio then shows Goon a book containing the names of all the people that owe him money.
Meanwhile the police track Labrazio down and surround the trailer.
In the resulting shoot-out, Goon's Aunt Kizzie, trying to protect her nephew, is gunned down by stray bullets from Labrazio's gun.
After Labrazio dismisses Kizzie as a 'stupid broad' for getting in the way of the crossfire,...

ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype had a rare opportunity to sit down with filmmaker David Fincher earlier today to talk about his fantastic new film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and our questions about the amazing opening credits title sequences animated by Tim Miller at Blur in Venice led to us asking about his other animated project, producing Eric Powell’s animated movie based on his popular Dark Horse comic book character The Goon.

Speaking with SuperHeroHype, director David Fincher updates on three upcoming films that he's currently involved with. On the animated adaptation of the Dark Horse character The Goon (which Fincher is producing), he says that in January there'll be meetings to figure out the budget. He also talks about the adaptation of the Charles Burns graphic novel Black Hole, which he has been attached to for a few years, praising the script and saying that the FX has to be done right. Finally, Fincher dishes on the current progress of the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea redo, which has Se7ven writer Andrew Kevin Walker working on the new screenplay. He says that he's met with James Cameron about filming the movie (which has a $200 mil. budget) in 3D, and he also comments on what exactly interests him in the project. On The Goon... Eric’s been working on it and Tim...

Once upon a time there was a powerful Wizard who had evil in his heart. He saw the comic world as a place he could bend to his will. And for a time, publishing companies flocked to him as loyal lap-dogs. Their best artists and writers were doled out to him to make appearances at his traveling circus. He was gloriously powerful, but feared his mortality. Soon, his spells… terrible fluff charms with no bite or news illusions presented way past their prime… weakened his power. The Wizard flailed madly to stay relevant. The people of the comic world simply stopped paying attention. His power dwindled. His traveling circus became a geek show of tired acts. He was left with no choice. He took the few followers he’d kept a grasp on, and sucked their life force… and ran into the forest. And there he stayed, seething, and cursing the public for abandoning him.

I don't follow Hellboy religiously. I've seen the films and read a few of the trades but I'm not caught up. I see the books when I go buy comics and I've always wanted to get into it hardcore. So, when I saw this press release from Dark Horse about a B.P.R.D. event premiering in 2012 it automatcally made me reconsider my lack of Hellboy in my comics pile.
All of the press has the tag line "It's all going to hell in 2012," and Dark Horse has announced five new titles that will be starting in 2012...

This year saw the usual parade of macabre work in books and graphic novels, from reliable creators like Stepen King (11/22/63), Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez (Locke & Key Volume 4: Keys to the Kingdom), Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead Volume 7), and the host of horror writers (and small press publishers) whose novels and collections we've been covering here through our new book critic staff. Terrific comic reprint collections also continued this year, like DC's hardcover Saga of the Swamp Thing and Dark Horse's Creepy and Eerie Archives. Dark Horse Comics has announced a new story of Francesco Francavilla's The Black Beetle. The Detective Comics artist is working on the three-part pulp-noir story featuring his webcomic hero for the Dark Horse Presents anthology comic. "I'm working on a 24-page story titled 'Night Shift' that will be spread over three issues of Dark Horse Presents," said Francavilla. "I am hugely influenced by pulp stories of the '30s and '40s, and wanted to develop a series that used that influence as a jumping-off point to explore some modern storytelling with fun twists. I think this will be a great introduction to readers who are new to this character and universe, but will also be an exciting new adventure for those who've been reading (more)...

Comic books weave threads through all popular media. What once lived in attics and dingy strip mall stores are now headlining box offices, Broadway stages, and magazine covers. So how far do these tentacles stretch? This column looks at what’s popular, and uncovers some of the hidden connections to the comic world!
This week: HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” Martin Scorsese's take on Prohibition-era Atlantic City gives viewers a ground-level view of America's greatest gangsters right as they're getting on their feet. With alcohol outlawed (and women just given the right to vote), politics and violence are the words of the day, and gangsters like Al Capone mix with bootleggers and presidents. And it has some pretty good comic connections!

It was back in August of 2009 when Universal acquired the rights to adapt Steve Niles' Criminal Macabre, which features drug-infused anti-hero detective Cal McDonald, into a feature film; and yes, things have been moving rather slowly, but we finally have an update!

Right now Cal is being developed at Universal Studios for a feature movie. And after being through multiple studios, we finally have...Universal really gets it. And they’re letting us do it as an R because for years people wanted me to do it as a PG-13 movie, and I was like, “Have you read the comic?” Like there’s really not a lot of PG-13 stuff to Cal.

Regular Daily Dead readers know that Alien is one of my favorite films (if not my favorite film). We’ve been covering Alien Universe and Prometheus-related news regularly, and I’m always up for checking out a new Alien product. Ian Nathan recently released Alien Vault, which is a must-have book for fans of the Alien series.
While the obsessive Alien fan may know much of the story behind the making of the film, this book provides extra details, never-before-seen photos, and some great inserts, including Nostromo blueprints and storyboard pages. I recently had the chance to catch up with Ian and talked to him about the making of Alien Vault, Prometheus, and how he’d like to see the Alien franchise continue for future sequels.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with me. I’m always happy to talk to a fellow obsessive fan of the Alien series.

A lot of pixels have been spilled recently about Dark Horse going day-and-date digital at a cheaper price point than the print edition, with many retailers feeling undercut. Mark Millar has said we shouldn’t be doing day-and-date at all:
I really think day and date release is a disastrous idea and makes no economic sense at all to comics as a business. It’s potentially ruinous for comic stores, and in the long term it’s not going to do publishers any favors either.
Brian Wood has a more nuanced point of view:
No sane creator, or publisher, wants to see comic shops hurt. We all have emotional connections to them, to the idea of them, and we count owners and employees as personal friends. We aren’t looking for digital to steal customers away from shops, but rather to be an additive thing, to be an additional source of income.

I don’t know about you guys, but I could use a laugh. One would think comics would be a great place to look for laughs, since, you know, they’re called “comics.”
And yet…
But I don’t want to bitch and moan about stuff that’s not funny. I’d rather celebrate what is. Different people find different things amusing, but I suspect that at least one thing on this list will do it for you.
Here, for your entertainment pleasure and in no particular order, are some really funny books, done in the graphic novel format.
Kyle Baker is one of my favorite humans. There isn’t a book he’s done that doesn’t thrill me. The Cowboy Wally Show made me laugh so hard I couldn’t breathe. And if you want to know how he does it, you could do worse than track down...

Dark Horse Comics has addressed the confusion over its plans for same-day print and digital releases. Its announcement last week of day-and-date digital comics caused concern among retailers after saying that its digital comics would be between $$0.99 (63p) and $$1.99 (£1.27). Dark Horse president and founder Mike Richardson apologised for the confusion in a statement, revealing that new digital comics would also cost $$2.99 before falling in price to $$1.99 after the first month of their release. Folks, I apologize for missing two weeks ago. I know it caused you to cancel plans, cut ties with loved ones, cease working, and maybe join one of the many #OccupyComicMix rallies across America. Well, as one of the 14.3% here who write a column, I assure you it won’t happen again.
Since it’s that time where we start reflecting on where we’ve been, what we’ve accomplished, and what we enjoyed… it figures I’d take a week off of crazy ranting to spread a little appreciation out there for the things in comics I’ve loved this year. What follows is an unordered, unfiltered, unadulterated list of things that tickled my nethers (comicly speaking). Tally ho, my friends.
Ff — Those who follow me fully know I am more or less a DC dude. But I told myself this year I would consider more titles to pull from the House of Ideas.
