One of Season 5's gems
TheLittleSongbird10 July 2016
"Outfoxed" is not as good as "The Fox" (which introduced Karl Arnold, one of the most prolific, interesting and sadistic serial killers 'Criminal Minds' has ever written), then again it is difficult to be close to the same level as one of the show's best written and best ever episodes, but it is still incredibly good and one of Season 5's gems.

It's the interactions with Hotch, Prentiss and Arnold that make this episode work particularly well. Arnold's dialogue is just as chilling as in "The Fox", even though he is not committing murders here and is incarcerated he still has that sadistic edge. Neal Jones again, even if looking a little different, does exceptionally, not just in the delivery of these chilling lines, and of the relishing of the inappropriateness towards Prentiss (reminding one of Jacob Dawes in Season 1's "Riding the Lightning") but also his delight at Hotch's fright and despair at the end of the episode is spine-tingling.

Prentiss and Arnold's interactions also have genuine tension, tells so much about both of them and the case and has surprising nuance. It is agreed that Paget Brewster's acting here is truly phenomenal, Prentiss was always one of the high-points of 'Criminal Minds' but Brewster delivers some of her best acting here with a multi-layered and moving performance that does bring tears to the eyes. Also love the chemistry between Prentiss and Hotch, reminding one of how strong the BAU team are and how well they get on together and are supportive of one another. Thomas Gibson brings his usual stoic seriousness to Hotch, and between Hotch and Arnold, the acting of both Gibson and Jones at the end being one of the more subtle acting highlights.

The rest of the team don't shine quite as well, which is a shame, but they are not side-lined either and they are still interesting and true to character, no dumbing down or out of character moments. The mystery is diverting, with an unsub that one hates but feels sort of bad for, very good tension and suspense if not quite as much as "The Fox", interesting profiling and a twist reveal that nobody sees coming in a million years (it is left to the imagination as to how the "admirer" knew that the team would go to Arnold, as it's not clear in the episode, but in no way does it bring the episode down). The very end is a bit abrupt and could have been rounded off a little more.

Writing is tight, tense, harrowing and has some emotional impact, and it's all solidly paced and directed. Although Jones, Gibson and especially Brewster give the best performances, absolutely nobody is bad. As always "Outfoxed" has a real sense of slickness, atmosphere and high production values and the music is well-suited to the drama without enhancing or distracting from it.

On the whole, a gem from Season 5 if not quite one of the masterful ones. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Miranda doesn't know how to speak Bosian
missdora-4942121 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I love Criminal Minds and this is a good episode but everything related to the war makes no sense for anyone who lives in any of ex Yugoslavian countries. First they say that Miranda is Croatian.but then they talk about Bosnia and victims of Srebrenica, therefore implying that she is Bosian. Also, they should have hired someone from any country of ex Yugoslavia to play her character or someone who at least knows how to proununce the language becuase.accent of actress Kristina Klebe is a joke, and it's no surprise because she is an American.

Language coach needed!

Warning: Spoilers
The episode was one of the better ones, but being from the region, the butchering of words like Zagreb and Srebrenica made me cringe. You could argue that American characters have no way of knowing how to pronounce these (although Srebrenica must have been on the news in the US, too). That would be fine, I guess. But I expect a Bosnian person to know how to pronounce words in her own language! Unfortunately, those were butchered as well. A quick session with a native speaker could have fixed that.

Stunning performance by Paget Brewster Warning: Spoilers
Paget Brewster's portrayal of Emily Prentiss in this episode seriously moved me. Emily was forced to "flirt" with a sadistic serial killer for the sake of the case. The way he talked to her made me want to gag, calling her beautiful and "my love", and yet she still had to sit there and pretend to like him in order to get him to open up. Imagine the prospect of having to sit there and make nice with a man who possibly killed 8 families. She couldn't defend herself; just had to sit there and take in everything. Near the end, when she was talking to Hotch about what she had to do, you could tell she was on the verge of tears (and that made me too...). I honestly cried when Emily was confessing this because you could see the pain on her face and how violated she felt. This episode stuck with me because this is a very real thing that female law enforcement has to deal with. I believe that Paget did a wonderful job of showing exactly how much this affected Emily. Seriously a phenomenal job acting.

Supremacist nonsense

Warning: Spoilers
The first victim was murdered in Zagreb, in 1998, which makes Reid comment that Zagreb is capital of Croatia and that there was an independence war between 1991-1995 Rossi then makes mental leap to Srebrenica masacre in DIFFERENT COUNTRY, Bosnia and Herzegovina. So...what? If a body was found in 1869 in Canada, Rossi would conclude it's related to the US civil war? Same "logic". Rossi then says 'A psychopath born in the middle of that conflict? That's not a good mix'. But if she was BORN in the middle of the conflict, she couldn't muder the first victim in 1998 - she'd be a pre-schooler. She is, in fact, as shown in her memories, about 15 during a fight. We get a scene with an American actor trying to speak in pigin Slavic - "nemoj da me gledEs", "svi cU umrieti" is neither Croatian, nor Bosnian, nor Serbian, with a horrible English accent, although she supposedly speaks little or no English. She is also called MIRANDA JAKAR, which is also not a Slavic name. If they truly wanted this plot, was it such a problem to hire an actual Bosnian actress, let her explain the facts to them, and have her speak correctly?

Real quick review: Watch 'Red Dragon" starring Anthony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes and Edward Norton. Same everything, including the way they found how how the person was choosing victims. Not impressed.
