Not a lot happened in this epsiode, but it is nice to see that Anakin have better chemistry here than they do in the films.

The Spy Who Loved Me

This episode is a solid and enjoyable spy story as Padme gets asked to spy on her former lover who is spying on the senate for the separatists. It is a game of spy and counter spy with a bit of romance and jealousy from Anakin.

Interestingly this is not so much a James Bond homage and more probably a homage to 1940s spy movie classic Notorious by the genius director Alfred Hitchcock.

Overall the episode is not up to Hitchcock's classic standard and not all that exceptional compared to the best Clone Wars episodes but the ingredients of Notorious - romance, jealousy, intrigue, mind games and suspense are there enough to make this very decent in terms of interest and quality.

My rating: 8/10.

Senate Spy

Among the few things that this show didn't manage to sell to me was the complexity of Anakin and Padmé's relationship. There is so much to be done with their secret marriage, but instead, it seems like they continue to go the soap opera way with them, which is definitely not a good idea for a great show like this. The entire jealousy subplot of this episode almost ruined the whole thing for me. Apart from that, there was a lot of good intrigue and I think the character of Clovis is someone who they could have done a lot more with, instead of simply portraying him as a bit of an idiot. I know what this is a setup for, so I can't be all that mad at the episode, but looking at the episode as what it is and standing for itself, it is definitely not one that I find all that memorable.

The show still doesn't delve deep enough but this episode features some compelling aspects

Warning: Spoilers
Anakin and Padme's relationship sometimes feels sitcom-y in that the conflict between them feels somewhat contrived. I could believe that Anakin, a sometimes narcissistic hot head, would feel jealous of Padme going on a mission where she has to pretend to have feelings for another senator. The problem is that their relationship having this kind of test is indicative of heteropessimistic tropes- that is, the idea that men and women in a long term relationship will always have petty strife with each other and will never seem to like or love each other at all. This show does not struggle with the latter but sometimes does with the former. It's not egregious but it feels like they could have executed Anakin's jealousy with more nuance.

My minor gripe aside, I liked quite a few things about this episode. I really like when the show does political scheming and it is refreshing to see an episode where a lightsaber doesn't have to get activated (I, of course, love a good lightsaber fight scene but this show sometimes feels oversaturated with them). I also like that Clovis, the antagonist of the episode, is not an out and out villain like some of the separatists are. He is a selfish man, but he seemed to genuinely love Padme and was willing to risk his life to save hers. We also see Anakin's pettiness at the idea that Clovis might die without the disk. The episode was not necessarily a character study but it had good character beats.

Great Nod to Hitchcock's Notorious
mweratcliffe5 September 2021
When at the end of the episode Skywalker is carrying Senator Padmé down the staircase it hit me that the entire episode was a half hour version of Notorious Directed by Hitchcock in the 40's and staring Cary Grant and Ingres Bergman I was really impressed. All the elements of the film were there. Impressive and I'm going to pay closer attention now to other cinematic references that may show up in the series. Well done!

Bizarre attitude toward women in otherwise fun plot
cglamb-14 December 2023
Padme is a Senator. Others, like, say, Palpatine, are also politicians, but Palpatine does not wear halter tops and backless, strapless outfits. It is bizarre and gross to see how Padme is sexualized and how even female-coded drones are sexualized, with tiny waists and massive breasts (on a drone?!). It's beyond weird to see Padme's lower ribs jutting out on her bare midriff while she's strategizing with a fully clothed Anakin. This was the best they could do for a show released in the early 21st century? It's disturbing to see how girls and women were only allowed to exist as characters in 2008-2009 or so if their bare bodies were on display as much as possible. I had hoped that alienating attitude had gone out of style in the Star Wars world with George Lucas's awful and demeaning gold bikini decision back in the 1980s.

Not much of a personality in padme
spammynator17 October 2022
Padme feels like they replaced her character with Barbie from the Barbie movies. She gets some amazing lines like "you called it your HOME, aww". She has none of Natalie Portmans spunk. She is kind of like a wilting wallflower. She also lets herself be manipulated in the most obvious attempt to sway her ever. "Wait you are saying I can't do what I don't want to do?!? I am totally going to do it, so there!!! Showed you" It in no way made me think of Padme as smart or resourceful, just meh. THE Jexi council also seem super blind to Anakins feelings for Padme.

The episode also ends on a cliff hanger.
