Warning: Spoilers
Painfully clear that some of y'all who are commenting have never been through tornado survival and have no idea about horses and live stock. Allow me... If you are caught in the middle of nowhere in a tornado, you find the lowest spot and get in it. Keeps you from being hit by debris, struck by lightning, and the terrain will help shield you. The tornado will pass over or near you and, while it's not perfect, your chances of survival are better.

Someone commented that it was stupid to release the horses rather than outrun the storm...horses will instinctively seek safety and it's better if you are not there. Unhitch wagon horses because the wagon will fly away. Remove the saddle from riding horses if you have time so if you die your horse isn't stuck with something they can't rub off. If the tornado forms far enough away, unlike here, you can stay a safe distance from it incase it shifts. This one pretty much dropped on top of them.

Another comment I had to shake my head to...the tornado didn't drop rain. Not all do.

Another gem...Elsa's horse is supposed to be fast but couldn't outrun the thieves. Horses are mammals not cars, Lightning can be as fast as he likes but only for so long and he'd already run from a Tornado, run to track the herd, and run away from them. Wouldn't you be tired?

I get that it's a TV show but please do a little fact finding before you comment and look like an idiot.

Find and read the journals from original pioneers.
Scott6997 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Then, you'll know. I've read many of the pioneers journals, diaries and memoirs, mostly written by the women of the time, this is very accurate, very real. Although most wagon trains were 100 plus wagons, some attempted the trek with 20 or so, they are among the disaster stories, entire wagon trains wiped out. This really happened. We know the Duttons make it to Montana, but does the rest of this group survive past that, unknown. I'm looking forward to finding out.

And God is the land...
boggie47587 February 2022
I guess I am not in the group that doesn't like Elsa. I really like her..I also love the narration. Another excellent episode. This is one of the best westerns made for television I have seen in a long time. The writing is tight and the acting is impactful.

Tornado and Thieves
RobTortureWright6 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"Because we're living in heaven, and hell too, they co-exist, and god is the land."

Fantastic episode that slowly ramped up the pace and showed us yet again how destructive and dangerous the world was back in those days.

I particularly liked how with all episodes of 1883 they show us both the beauty and ugly in equal measure. They show us the Great Plains, the blue skies and sunsets while also the carcasses of dead animals and humans scattered across the land, letting us know that what was ahead is dangerous and troublesome.

The arrival of 2 Indians on the journey was welcome but it seems Elsa is passing her love around like a joint at a stoner convention and takes an interest in one of them.

We witness what we think is the 'big moment' of the episode when the tornado arrives and wrecks havoc, causing most of the wagons to be lost and causing everyone to run and hide while the cattle and horses flee. The cooks gone AWOL as it seems that slap from Mrs Dutton sent him flying to another state. Elsa must have been smoking some strong ganja at that previously mentioned stoner convention because she claims the tornado was "Beautiful", I don't know how she would know as her face was buried deep in the Indians.

As the dust settles we learn that thieves have attempted to steal the cattle for themselves and so the group set out to take back what is rightfully theirs. They call out that there is 6 thieves but when gunfire ensues and Thomas, Shea and James are Injured and only survive with the help of the Indians, they learn there was actually 12-13 thieves. The cook returns having only fled to avoid the tornado so get that stew cooking big boy. We see the arrival of another man who helped save them, he seems to know shea, so what impact on the season he will play is yet to be known.

It's implied that the Indians only helped and have now left the group, so Elsa is on the hunt for another man, best of luck to whoever that is.

Overall another great episode that ramped up the pace and gave us another scare along the journey to freedom.

Beautiful/brutal world!
ree-187 February 2022
Why everyone is down on Elsa, I don't understand. The story of 1883 is told through her eyes, and she is at a pivotal age of growing up from a teen to a woman. She lost her first love, and right now she is just lost and finding her way in a beautiful world that is also a brutal world. Heaven/Hell. I love that it's a woman's perspective. Isabel May is doing an awesome job, as is Faith Hill. Interesting since it's a Western, and usually the men step up to the plate. But they also do here, from Sam Elliott to Tim McGraw. This reminds me of Lonesome Dove with a female perspective. Far better than some of the other things that are on. Can't wait each week until the next episode!

The Plains Are Littered With Bones
douglasmcbroom6 February 2022
Best episode of the series, thus far. The action picked up big time as the enduring hardships continue. "Heaven and Hell side-by-side."

Taylor Sheridan's novelesque writing exhibits itself most eloquently in Isabel May's voice over narrations.

Faith Hill had a particularly good episode. There's possible trouble on the horizon as we meet 'Good' Sam.

3 things...
Rockriversky6 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ok. I am enjoying this show. I think it's pretty entertaining yet predictable. That being said, I have three gripes.

One, the freaking dribbling snot bubbles. Every time someone cries, they have strings of snot running out of their nose immediately. It's just over the top.

Second, the fake beards, hair extensions and horrendous bleaching of Elsa's hair is abysmal. Elsa's tape-in's were clearly visible in one scene. The cooks beard looks like the old Brillo pad I used to scrub the sink. I'm sure, with the production budget 1883 has there are ways to do better.

Third, I find it completely tacky that Taylor Sheridan casts himself in shows he creates. It's so predictable. He's not a great actor and it's very much like he's stroking his own... ego. At least he won't be able to wear a "I stole your girlfriend" T-shirt or some other stupid crap.

I still hate Elsa's meaningless narrations!
jeersNcheers13 February 2022
Good episode, except for Elsa's continuing, needless, insipid narration. UGH!

And one point off for Elsa screaming (believable) during the tornado, then climbing on top of the Native during the tornado (laughably unbelievable).

Sometimes it seems like Taylor knows nothing about real women. Maybe they need to add a female writer or two...

The Best Storytelling Ever
finleypackard6 February 2022
I have no doubt that ever episode of 1883 will win an Emmy Award. This is the best storytelling on television I have ever seen. There is no doubt. It is a warning to all directors and producers that the level expected of them has been raised forever. Most importantly lets not forget the writer(s) of this story. Mr. Sheridan has surly won his place in heaven with an Emmy in his hand.

Quite possibly, the best show on television!.
ajmillar7 February 2022
I love this show, look forward to it every Sunday. The acting, writing, direction, music are all top notch. Elsa and Wade (and hopefully Sam becomes a regular!) are my favorite characters in a show where ALL the characters are so well written and acted. Love Mama Bear Dutton as well!. Finally, after such a long time not liking anything on TV, Taylor Sheridan gifts us with Yellowstone and now1883!!.

Great Rollercoaster Ride...
snowshoe56036 February 2022
...and I don't even like rollercoasters; at least not the ones in amusement parks. 1883 is a great ride though. It shows the beauty that is the American West, but it also shows the relentlessness of nature and the ugliness of its people.

It's also nice to see that the native Americans characterizations are much better here than in the Westerns of the 50's and 60's (I could never stand hearing the "Indians" speaking better English than the "whites," among other errors).

Keep it up. You've got a fan for life here.

Corny and unrealistic
guitarfreak-3315713 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The make out scene in the middle of the tornado was as corny as it gets. Also super unrealistic that back in 1883 you'd take your daughter to fight a bunch of grown men.

Slowly losing interest
deequeue10 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It wasn't a bad episode, it could've been better and so much potential here. I feel like it's becoming like the Walking Dead. Group moves, deal with thieves or natural disaster, rinse and repeat. Same ole Elsa having crush on every new guy and a shootout with 13 vs 3 and none of the good guys die. Unless the 3 guys are armed with M60's you ain't winning that fight vs single action firearms.

Another fine episode...

Elsa is the backbone of the show and carries it well. Beautifully acted by a true beauty! Can not wait for the next episode. I wish we could stream the entire series but the wait is worth it...

Good episode but
sjbushby-606806 February 2022
Great show but please less Elsa, first 3 episodes were amazing. It's not that I don't like her it's that I don't like the fact we don't get to see enough of the other characters. Don't see it changing though so that kinda sucks and has kinda ruined a potentially amazing show in my opinion.

Taylor Sheridan could use
dklee-667686 February 2022
The same advice that Sam Elliot's character gives Cookie - that he needs to shake his exceedingly frequent use of the F word. It adds so little and gives the impression of limited creativity. It also limits the audience.

Best episode yet
wayindie8 February 2022
Much more action packed than previous episodes. Exposure to the elements causing more loss but also a couple of unexpected turns along the way.

Elsa proves yet again to have her father's courage and her mother's feistiness.

Deeper into the unknown
john_h_wolf_iii8 February 2022
This episode excellently illustrates the travails. Elsa is good, and our guide. Go with her, follow her story, listen to her descriptions, admit that she's grown from the Tennessee girl into the woman of the wilderness, woman of the west - and she's thriving. Somebody had too, back then. It was not easy. All sorts of things could happen. One had to be strong, resilient, adaptive to change. This wasn't a guided trek up Everest with sherpas carrying everything. Kudos to Taylor Sheridan for making it feel real.

Another great episode
frodaddy-125 May 2022
The writing in this show is incredible. Sure some of the events in this episode were a stretch and required suspension of disbelief, but those moments were telling a story and the episode was great. 1883 is better than Yellowstone!

If you care about the settlers storys watch Into the West
doctrnic-305-6349785 March 2022
Reading the reviews I think people forget this is the Dutton origin story, not anybody else's, we dont need another LOST where they tried to write branch line stories with the other survivors dragging out the series for years, or a PC version of the the 1800s like Spielbergs Into the West. I have been thoroughly hooked into this series. Being that each episode follows Elsa, we can only draw a conclusion that Elsa will be the grandmother of John Dutton. So far this series seems to be more accurate to how life was in the west than most westerns produced and I cant wait for more episodes.

Awesome
ronanmjames-5690911 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's great the only problem I had was after mrs. Dutton shot the bandit after the tornado she just rode off but back then I'm sure they would have stripped the bandit and taken his horse.

Absolutely perfect. Intoxicating, heart breaking, beautiful, exciting. This show is growing to be far richer than its predecessor Yellowstone. Taylor Sheridan is finally bringing amazing rich drama back.

This series is a let down
BruceWayne33 May 2022
The tornado scene was wild Kind of crazy to think people back then had to go through such situations with no where to hide But the kissing scene while it's happening?!?!

Come on They have turned this waaaay too much into a love western

Taylor Sheridan just loves being in all his shows

The show is too drawn out They could of condensed these episodes and added more depth, seems repetitive.

Seires turn
kingsx_649 March 2022
In a series that I've really enjoyed, this episode is a huge let down.

Do I have a problem with Elsa making goo goo eyes with an American Indian? Nope.

But doing it so quickly after her loss? Yup I also don't have a problem with her narration like some others do.

Until this episode.

The idea of the Europeans having to deal with a massive and brutal storm could have been really cool. But for some reason, it seemed to be put in the background for another chance for Elsa to kiss someone.

No. In a series I've genuinely liked, this was a series turn for me.

Hope they get back on track with the next one.

takeaknapp-6286515 February 2022
This episode was amazing!! I loved it and can't believe all the negative reviews! I wanted her to hook up with the hot Indian-I want them to have a beautiful papoose! Indians are amazing. I love their respect for the land, their beautiful tribal wear, their respect for animals, etc. From the moment Sam appears, I kept telling my hubby I WISH WE WERE INDIAN! I had tears in my eyes this whole episode! It's great. Go watch it-NOW!!
