The episode's setting is ambiguous, with production design pointing to several eras of conspicuous consumption. The Ranch style home is described as an "old house" by the husband, suggesting the present day; likewise the overnight delivery of the lotion is contemporary. However the designs of the computers, TV and "McMansion" are consistent with the late '00s, and the fashions of the co-workers and the lotion salespeople, and the designs of the household appliances correspond to the 1980s (at which stage a Ranch home would be unfashionable but not "old").
The logo of the bank where the women work, "East Suburban Bank," is modeled on that of West Suburban Bank, a real bank in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where the story is set.
