Excellence on the Verge of Creepy

Murder, Fraud, Incest, Blackmail . . . Lack-of-Compassion, Tawdriness, Unfairness-of-Life, Betrayal-of- Innocence, avarice, jealousy . . . done so expertly, adroitly, with a flair, with humanity, with the gentlest humour.

The story of a famous writer taking an unknown writer's work as his own intertwines with the story of a young pregnant 15 year-old, with a story of an exotic dancer.

The famous author triggers events when he tries to find out more about the real author of his best seller that has catapulted him to Nobel Prize Status. At one point he asks their mutual editor what the other writer is like:

"Was his tail between his legs?" (as he was told by the unknown's landlord who had evicted him)

"Did he have 'Quiet Pride'" (as the unknown's first editor said)

"He was," the shared editor says, "beyond shame."

An amazing entrée into Dutch Film.
