Intense drama with humor thoughtfully engaging issues of immigration, gender, and race

I saw this film in a small theater in Chicago -- and the audience hung on every word. The film is quietly intense -- with a beautiful combination of light, dark, and grey in terms of dialogue, subject matter, and how shots are framed. Characters are REMARKABLE! Each one provides a slightly different take on what it means to "belong" in the United States. They do this through their positions in society (race, gender, economic status) and within a story that never drags. We move through the life of this charismatic yet tortured Polish painter -- and through his eyes (and all the other character reactions to him) we understand his dilemma regarding belonging and respect. Fabulous film. I also watched it as a video and it held up GREAT.

A beautifully directed story about the invisible life here in United States for many immigrants -- you feel the emotions from the characters!

This movie hits close to home even though I'm not polish, many of my Mexican community experiences the same type of thoughts, fears and emotions. The scene in the bathroom mirror, amazing. Very beautiful movie - highly recommend to others! BUENISIMO!

I want to give special recognition to the actor whose role was the ex-wife. We never see her, but the emotion and attitude she projects through that one telephone call is chilling. We clearly understand the painter's dilemma.

Feeds your eyes, breaks your heart, tickles your funny bone

From their comically awkward first encounter till their shattering final scene together, the two principal characters capture our hearts, challenge our complacencies, and test our hopes as they reveal hard truths about themselves and about us. Also outstanding are the excellent performances of a diverse supporting ensemble who deftly suggest so many other poignant human stories needing to be told, heard, seen, known.
