A must watch for introverts
incyphe24 April 2022
Brought to you from the same writer who created My Mister, this is a story about 3 introvert siblings and the people around them.

This is not a typical K-Drama love story. The pacing may appear to be slow for some, but not because of filler scenes and dialogs rampant in many K-shows (arguing, kareoke singing, drinking, chasing or yearning scenes) but because the writer and the director wanted to draw you in through non-verbal interactions, facial expressions, silence and pauses.

The more you intently watch, the more the show will reward you. It's a gem.

Looking Forward To Each New Episode!
PalmBeachG22 May 2022
My Liberation Diary at Netflix. I am looking forward to each new episode - I admit at the beginning I thought it was a little slow going, but got better and better as it went along. Now can't wait for each week for the new episodes. My favorite character is Mr. Gu of course, - he is so handsome, mysterious, cool - you just can help but be intrigued by him. My second most favorite character is Yeom Chang-hee who is absolutely hilarious. My favorite scene of his is when he begs Mr Gu to drive his Rolls when he discovers the key. There is a lot of deeper scenes in the series and is not just country scenes but later gets into city scenes as well.

A Simply Wonderful Slice of Life
refordgarry4 July 2022
This drama has So.... Many.... levels: of simple psychotherapy by the keeping of a personal diary, the daily grind of commuting from sleepy suburb to city, of overgrown children that simply will not leave the parental nest, of fracturable hopes of promotion and marriage, or the mystery stranger (Mr. Gu) with a secret past. And then there is the sheen of that hot, sultry Seoul Summer that permeates deep down into one's own happy memories. The pace is slow, with frequent personal soliloquy from the cast, to the sound of crickets and the croaking of nocturnal amphibians in this barely connected village, where it's apparently always the dead of night.

My Liberation Diary may not suit viewers requiring intense drama or action sequences, but for me it is a real gem. One waits a long time for such a drama to come along, and when it is over there is a genuine regret in its passing. It is almost as if in this age of fast-paced life we all need, time to reflect. This is guaranteed to leave you with something if you can spare the time...

I hated a slice-of-life genre, but this show actually made me a happier viewer.
redsbleeder5 June 2022
I did not want to watch this show in the first place because I hate watching people struggle in life, even if it's fiction. I have my own life to worry about, why would I want to worry about others? My motto in watching TV shows is "I just want to be entertained. Period." Oh boy, how I was by this drama. I loved everything about this show: the script, the cast, the crew and even the slow pace at the beginning. I watched 1-2 eps a night until ep 6. Then I binged eps 7-14, and I "struggled" for about 5 days before ep 15 finally came.

My two "Baeksang Club" buddies nagged me to watch the show for weeks, and I was not disappointed. Thanks to them. May they never catch a cold nor a hangover the morning after.

This show is art itself, every step of the way, every word that comes out, every gesture, every smile, and every look in the eye. The three siblings have their own struggles: searching for love; seeking a better livelihood; and finding a will to live. The old me reading this review would not be anywhere near this show, but Lord bless the writer, director and every actor on the show, I was made whole and felt happier with my life, having watched this.

The male sibling was my favorite, such a caring person. He was unbelievable as a human being though looking so ordinary. I think this world needs more people like him. I thoroughly enjoyed each of his "realizations" because I learned something new too.

The lead couple's relationship is "less is more", and you will see along the road how strong theirs is (ditto the chemistry OMG).

The oldest sister was annoying at the beginning, but that was how she supposed to be. I ended up rooting for her the most at the end.

And I sincerely dedicate my closing paragraph to Sonsukku's hotness. That is the show's bonus.

exquisitely written
mozzmck14 May 2022
I very rarely write reviews but this is just so beautifully written and performed i had to comment; the insecurities of each character, the raw emotions portrayed, it leaves me drained after every episode. Each episode I'm left smiling yet tearful. The silence running through this series is so rare nowadays but plays such an important role in the portrayal of the characters; the acting from every actor is superb.

Its not yet finished and i want to watch it again.

Park hae-young is an immensely talented scriptwriter and i cannot wait to see what her next project will be.

Calming,soothing,a must watch!

I'm not the type of person who writes reviews I'm more of a person who reads them to find the courage to actually begin a series If you're hesitant , i assure you you won't regret it So many things i love about this drama and i just finished ep 14 « Did you liberate yourself ?« I think that was the best line in the whole show !

I'm so hooked!
ccline-5171411 May 2022
Melodramas (novelas, soap operas) and Cinderella stories fun and diverting but this slice of life story speaks to my heart! Wish more cultures would bring us more of this kind of programming. These are real people, tired, disillusioned and looking for a break, in work, life and love. Main girl is a melancholy personality, maybe born that way or not, but she never invoked my pity, just admiration because she knows who she is. Main guy running away from past but they connect in a silent introspective way. They know each other without speaking. Other characters storylines interesting in a more obvious way. All in all this series excellent!!

I think it's a fiction series but actually, it's my life anxiety.
zinemamoviemedia1 June 2022
My Liberation Notes tell slowly, but the slowly does not make me boring because that pace contains the deepest voice from a character that very related to my life. I think it's not just about introvert, but it's talk about how adult life is run. I'm very related that sometimes it's hard to have social relation to other people when we getting old.

Real, not cliché
npoc-7410514 May 2022
You have the golden opportunity to watch a series without cliché expressions, characters, etc. The story, the characters, and the actors who portray them are genius. The relationships and interactions between the characters are genuinely interesting, soul connections, catching, natural.

The director's artistic and dramatic vision of the script is captured, along with the expert guiding of the actors and crew was brilliant. So many beautiful scenes. Great touching script that most people could relate to.

Son Seok-Koo, Lee Min-Ki, Lee El, Lee Ki-Woo, Kim Ji-won were natural, beautiful/handsome, realistic, relatable.

Every relationship feels like work
alaningle730 May 2022
The story of three siblings, two women and a man who live with their parents in a rural location and have a long commute each day to their work in Seoul. It is vey slow paced and shows the daily monotony of their lives and their search for love. It is interesting and each character displays their innermost thoughts and their words and dialogue are thoughtful and meaningful. I appreciate a slow paced movie but as this series lasts sixteen episodes, even with the great acting I struggled with the slow progress and did want it to hurry along in parts.

Life is tiring and this drama empathizes with it
pranayjalvi11 June 2022
My Liberation Notes is the story of three siblings with a strict hard-working father who seldom speaks, and a mother who does most of the talking in order to avoid arguments at the dining table, and then a stranger living as a neighbour.

The drama is relatable on various levels, especially the mood at the workplace of the three siblings, the camaraderie between the co-workers, the after-work gossip, and the random ranting sessions.

Regardless of which side of the human spectrum you find yourself on and which character's journey you relate to the most, My Liberation Notes hits many correct points, if not all, and makes the viewers feel relatable about the reality of life. MLN was a good drama, a slow burn with good character development, although gets very slow with pacing at times.

My Rating : 7/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Such a disappointment after the stellar My Mister by the same writer.

This slice of life drama that never takes off, meanders with little direction, has mostly uninteresting characters and mediocre acting for the most part, leaves you wishing you never invested the time.

Although the story centers around three adult children living at home in the country near Seoul, the youngest child commands more of the plot, to the detriment of the story. She has little presence, a wooden expression, the least interesting story and a complete bore. Her older sister is a ditzy romantic who complains about her love life but is a good actress and holds your attention. The middle son has the most interesting life and goes through the greatest turmoil and results. Thankfully he is also a very good actor and pulls it off well.

The parents are pretty much just set pieces, typical worrying mom and taciturn dad who stuggles to express any emotion he may have. Their absence as the story progresses is not missed, even by their children.

The potential wild card is the alcoholic, mysterious, perhaps boyfriend of the youngest daughter, whose heavy drinking seems accepted without any concern for the most part, particularly by her. His schizophrenic life is revealed halfway through the story but makes no sense and his subsequent revelations do not support his appearance from the beginning. The last episode reveals a violent upheaval on his part that apparently will never have consequences. So the potentially most interesting storyline also fails.

Finally, the namesake of the series, an office diary club formed by a few office misfits (one being the youngest daughter) who struggle to confirm to societal pressures but want out, this plotline and character arc abandoned halfway through the show, only to be resuscitated in the ultimate episode, but to what purpose? We learn they did not change and did not continue their diaries but, oh my, perhaps they will continue to meet and start again. Only saving grace here was that one of the best actor in the series was one of the group. We saw too little of him.

This story could have been told in 8 episodes maximum. Watch My Mister instead. Twice. It's as good each time.

Another Gem from Park Hae-young
mjkarlin26 July 2022
My Liberation Notes is writer Park Hae-young's follow-up to her remarkable My Mister (2018). In a way, it's My Mister with almost (not quite) all the dramatic elements of that story stripped out, so that the show can focus on the lives and characters of three highly depressed siblings, two sisters (played by Lee El and Kim Ji-won) bookending their brother (played by Lee Min-ki). All three are stuck working under-appreciated in dead end office jobs in Seoul to which they commute from far out in the countryside where they still live with their parents (as do so many single Korean adults even into their 40s). Despite their jobs, none seems able to escape and start their own lives. Not one of the children or the parents seems to like any of the others and their own manifest inadequacies never stop them from judging each other in ways that are, or at least are intended to be, as hurtful as possible.

Into their lives comes Gu Ja-gyeong, played by Son Seok-joo and known to them only as the somewhat mysterious Mr. Gu, who goes to work at the father's sink factory but who turns out (many episodes into the show) to be a gangster trying to escape his former life and is continuing to drown his sorrows in a sea of soju.

It may seem unlikely that the relentless portrayal of the characters' grinding depression, hopelessness, and sometimes outright misery could make for an engaging show, especially one that lasts for 16 one-hour long episodes. And yet, Park is such a skilled writer that once you are pulled into the world of these damaged people, you want to see it through to the end, to share in their occasional fleeting moments of happiness, to laugh when you are given permission, and to hope for their eventual redemption. You will not be unrequited.

The parents are played, entirely humorlessly, by Chun Ho-jin and Lee Kyung-seong and their characters are a weak spot, adding nothing at all to the story beyond the usual cliched oppression of their children. Indeed, their unremittingly curmudgeonly behavior, with never a hint of affection or parental wisdom, is quite tiresome and in stark contrast to the nuanced portrayal of the three siblings and Mr. Gu. Even when Lee Min-ki begs them to give him a little credit, a tiny hint of praise, they sit stony faced, unable to offer a hint of affection. Unlike the three siblings, who express a whole range of emotions, the parents display none and it strains credulity.

One element of the story in particular could have used some pruning. I have often complained at how Korean shows are bloated with scenes of meals and this one may claim the top spot, against formidable competition. It doesn't help that, to my Western eyes, the food looked so unappealing but even setting that aside My Liberation Notes needed to go on a radical diet. I ended up speeding through every useless moment of people eating and drinking and I lost nothing of the story or the development of the characters by doing so. Nor will you.

On the other hand, Park does use one usually unlovable trope of Korean drama to extraordinary effect - people talking and expecting responses that never come. The non-answers and evasions pile up one on top of the other in all kinds of ways and are alternatively frustrating and appropriate. They force the audience to fill in the blanks and not have the writer and the characters do everything for you.

This story also repeatedly asks an existential question, not for the first time in the history of drama but nevertheless subtly and sometimes not so subtly, about the meaning of life and the point of our own temporary existence on this planet. In olden times and for many people even today, religion so often sought to provide answers or at least comfort but there is little or none of that in My Liberation Notes. All the characters toil away, sometimes resentfully but always diligently and with bursts of self-awareness. In one scene, the older daughter says she wants to be happy in this life. In another particularly pointed scene, a man says of life, when you're finally done with education, job-hunting, having kids, raising them, you move on to their education, job-hunting and raising children all over again. A man and a woman should meet and fall in love and that should be the end. But, he says, that sounds cold, like you're saying, "I don't love you that much.", so they don't say it and they open the door to a lifetime of hardship. If there is a good answer to why we are here or what we should be doing while we are here, the show does not give it but it clearly implies that we should not just passively accept the boredom and discomfort of everyday life. While we are here, let's make what we can of what we have, and be happy, if only, as Kim says, for five minutes a day. If I have misunderstood, at least I was made to think and you will too.

A word about the actors. The cast is uniformly strong and that includes quite a number of lesser characters. The two sisters, in particular Li El, give remarkable layered performances which will evoke sympathy and even admiration; Lee Min-ki on the other hand, good as he is, cannot entirely escape how insufferable his character is, self-righteous to others and self-pitying to himself - Park consistently makes you want to slap him and shut him up, whereas you never feel that way about Li El or Kim Ji-won, a rising star whose reptation can only be enhanced by her work here. Son Seok-koo, as Gu, seems to be reprising his dour persona in the rather wonderful "Be Melodramatic", aka "Melo Is My Nature" (2019), again stripped down, quite effectively, to its essentials.

However, it all comes back to the writing. After My Mister and the earlier Another Ms. Oh!, Park Hae-young has shown us that she is one of the most original and effective writers in the K-Drama world. I for one intend to follow her wherever she takes us next.

Slow and Good
ckqdvpy1 May 2022
My wife and I started watching this serial coz we have seen Lee Min in "Because this is my first life" and liked it very much. The actors role here is drastically different than usual here and we both love it. All the actors here are perfectly cast. The episodes are slow and at episode 7 not much has happened but both of us are hooked to it. The scenes, dialogs, premises are so relatable and identifiable to something we have experienced in our life. Its so bang on that we have started relating ourselves to the characters. The direction is good. So far so good, one of the better shows and production quality i have seen on K-Serials.

Must watch to feel good of yourself!
ninapark-5995211 May 2022
I usually love dramas that make me watch multiple times and think about the meaning and myself. Thus drama is the one with meaningful dialogs and beautiful shots, music. Fantastic actors. The first couple of episodes arr slow and gloomy but this drama grows in you and you will feel like being liberated from whatever being pressured you down as the main characters liberate themselves slowly. Just so goood!

Insufferably boring but extraordinary slice of life K-drama
witra_as4 July 2022
"Tidak ada satu hal pun dalam hidup yang membuatku merasa tenang. Aku merasa sesak dan ingin bebas."

K-series ini seperti tema yang diusungnya tidak berusaha membuat setiap orang yang menonton akan langsung menyukainya. Butuh 'pemahaman' untuk mencernanya.

Entah bagaimana Park Hae-young mampu menyelami pikiran terdalam manusia lewat skenario cadasnya.

A slow burner but immensely satist
kamillakamaruddin7 May 2022
This drama has a slow pace . Like in life when things are not going our way. And yet the characters try very hard to get out of the droll existence. Luck is not on their side yet they help each other to change for the better. This is something that we all aspire to be, to be better human beings and to be happy .

Strongly recommended to watch. It's not a tearjerker, rom com or thriller, simply a slice of life at its most truthful.

I Wasn't Liberated
aylwardpaul31 May 2022
Apparently written by the same person who wrote "My Mister", i was enthusiastic about watching this, but came away very disappointed.

Like "My Mister", it is full of existential and philosophical conversations and observations, however whereas MM was built around an exciting plot involving corporate skullduggery, "My Liberation Notes" is built around nothing.

It just meanders along, with very little happening until about episode 9, and when you think it's then going to take off, it doesn't. It just continues to meander to an unsatisfying conclusion.

Some might refer to this as a touching and incisive slice of life, but there are much better films and series out there that provide similar observations with much more interest and in much shorter time.

Acting is good, and some scenes are well scripted, but it's just not worth the time invested.

Great depictions of real family life and love
ericfrickemusic4 September 2022
Most of the Korean dramas I've seen so far have been more of a romantic-comedy sort of vein. There is nothing wrong with that, and I've enjoyed a bunch of them, but this is not one of those. This show actually felt quite real and honest.

A bunch of aspects about this show stood out as great to me: The depictions of family life are incredibly realistic, with love, bickering, boredom, and hope all woven together at once. Romantic relationships are very well done; a bit multi-faceted or imperfect (as in real life), and you definitely find yourself rooting for each of the main characters. Depictions of the inner dialogues of introverted characters were spot-on. Even just the fact that this show mostly features introverted characters completely flies in the face of all of American television. From a basic plot standpoint, the show was never boring or predictable. And (spoiler alert) the depictions of the loss of loved ones were also incredibly relatable and realistic... I definitely had some memories come back.

Honestly, Korean television is such a welcome breath of fresh air from 90% of what else is on Netflix or American media. Kind of awesome that a show made on the other side of the world is so incredibly relatable.

Not for me
kwaterwindlife13 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I feel this series is overrated. I love My Mister but this one is really not my cup of tea. It is very slow. I understand the story is about three siblings struggle with lives but it's just not that interesting. Some things making me puzzled include how Mi-jeong fell for Mr. Gu, how Gi-jeong fell for Tae-join, why Chang-hee broke up with Hyun-ah, and why would you buy more alcohol when the person you love is already struggling with alcohol? The only one thing I like about this show is the change between different time/space. That's a very beautiful way to tell the story.

so so slow
yutko200413 June 2022
I like all actors. All of them are acting perfectly their role. I really don't know what say about the drama. On one hand it is so slow that not much is happening at all and yet I cannot stop watching. After watching so many Korean dramas where relationships are so hard to get, this drama shows the struggling of men and women in finding meaningful and long lasting relationships. Is it so hard to find love in S. Korea? I wonder.

Irritatingly slow then inconclusive
phd_travel24 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to watch this because of Kim Ji Won who is such a beautiful and talented actress. Unfortunately this slice of life drama is frustrating and unnecessarily slow. Half the scenes were unnecessary just walking back and forth with useless dialog that didn't advance the plot. The side characters weren't developed early on to make things involving. The mother's death was quite moving but they didn't show things from her point of view earlier. At first you want to see who Mr Gu is. His job wasn't that bad that he couldn't contact her. Then the ending doesn't really resolve any of the issues for the 3 siblings. The tall guy and the older sister don't get married just seem happy. But what about the situation with the daughter? HIs the son going to be a funeral director? The main couple what does it mean? Is he leaving the night club business and running off with her? They spend so much time on the rubbish scenes and then don't have a few minutes to show some progress or resolution for the three.

One good thing about this show is that it does put the hero's excessive alcohol consumption in a negative light. Most K dramas because of sponsorship by Soji companies or other reasons seem to encourage drinking by glamorizing the person who can drink a lot. Here the alcohol consumption results in negative effects and the boss even intervenes. It's strange how Kim Ji Won's character doesn't try to get him off the bottle a bit.

This series could have been good but it wasn't well written directed or edited. As far as slice of life dramas Our Blues is infinitely better.
