After Billy's father's death, penniless mother Kathleen and the brothers leave the Kansas dump on a trail west all the way to New Mexico. In the booming town of Santa Fe, she takes a poorly paid job in a boarding house, where Billy grows up as dishwasher with Mexican buddy Carlos. Just for the money, Kathleen marries dodgy entrepreneur Henry Antrim, whom Billy instinctively dislikes. Physically matured, Billy must watch powerless how 'mere Mexican' Carlos is murdered by a poker cheater whom the corrupt sheriff protects, as reporter Ash Upson explains another sick result of the secret societies of rich manipulators who control everything in their parts of the US. Billy catches Antrim in the brothel, but he's also broke, so it's time for the family to move again.
