And we're back
studioAT22 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After a slow start 'Ashes' has stepped out of the shadow of 'Life on Mars' and become a great show in its own right.

This is a solid start to the third and sadly final series of the show, with lots of questions to answer about Alex's situation being stuck in 1983, and also now how much can we really trust Gene Hunt.

All of the supporting cast get a chance to shine too, with Dean Andrews especially thriving on being given more to do as Ray.

The addition of Daniel Mays is also a good bonus going forward too.

A good opener to the third series.

Strike while the irons are hot

Having enjoyed the end of series 2 so much, I really wanted to like this. 1983 was my year musically so loving the songs but the storyline was thin and some of the cast have changed their styles. Loving Keeley in heels but she looks so much taller than the rest of the cast now which looks awkward in close ups and her hair didn't look great. Some great humour again. Will have to keep watching to see if it was worth making this third series.

Series 3 really does open with the goods

Here it is, the start of the third and final Series of the excellent Ashes to Ashes.

At the start Alex is seemingly back in the present day, but is all as it seems?

1983 and she's back. Gene's been on the run for shooting her. 'Sweet Dreams,' Audi Quattro and we're back on form.

More questions are asked, who's the cop with the blown off face? And what did Gene do 3 years ago?

Some really funny lines again, Hunt smirks to Drake 'You're like Bamber Gascgoine in drag.' I was sad to see that Chris and Shaz had split, especially as they both seem to have become good looking since Series 1. Finally Gene gives Shaz a little bit of respect and some responsibility. It is a very complex and thought provoking plot. The introduction of the very excellent Daniel Mays is fantastic, he looks perfect for the part.

The effects of 'Gary Soper' in Prison are incredibly realistic.

The countdown timer is very effective at adding tension, to what is an already highly tense and pressured episode.

Overall this is a totally brilliant episode, what a class start to Series 3, more please. I now love all of the characters and don't want the series to end!!

10/10.
