- An intense thriller about a lonely bookseller's obsessive love affair, and her protective best friend, who alone knows the horrible truth about her obsession.
- Isabelle lives alone in a big city with her two cats, and runs a shabby book store in a bohemian area of town. Her life consists of a set of dull daily rituals: breakfast at her local coffee shop, reading classical romance novels, and talking to her long-distance foster sister Jennifer every evening on the telephone. Everything changes when Isabelle's ex-lover James appears at her store. Her life instantly fills with excitement and color, and although Jennifer is frantic with worry, Isabelle becomes lost in a fantasy world with her supposed soul mate. The relationship is emotionally abusive, however, and Isabelle begins to self-destruct. Jennifer puts her own life on hold and drives across the country to save her foster sister, bringing a secret from their shared past... Isabelle's lover can't possibly be James.—Anonymous
- Isabelle moved from her small home town to the big city, where she has opened a small bookstore. She relies on her three cats - two in her apartment and one at the store - and her surrogate sister, mechanic Jennifer, whose family took Isabelle in when she was orphaned at age twelve, as her only sources of emotional support. Beyond trying to instill a sense of female empowerment to them, Isabelle has a standoffish relationship with her two staff, Chloe and Janna, as she does with everyone else in her life. She doesn't date, and even in the few instances she does go out with men, she views those situations as non-dates, all which end badly regardless because of her emotional problems. Even with Jen, Isabelle needs to speak to her every night, often crying over her emotional troubles, but feels comfort in that Jen is not there in person to pass judgment. Jen, who is currently pregnant with her and her partner Dave's first child, equally needs to make sure that Isabelle is all right, knowing that she will either be at home or the bookstore when she calls, and if she isn't at either place means that she is in trouble. Isabelle's life takes a brighter turn with the re-entrance into it of James, a former boyfriend from home. But James' return into her life only acts as a catalyst to reinforce her emotional problems. As Isabelle's life starts to spiral downward out of control, the question becomes if Jen can be there to pick up the pieces - she the only person who truly knows all of Isabelle's issues, including the reasons behind them - especially now as she tries to move on with her own life with Dave and the imminent arrival of the baby.—Huggo
