The pastor
jotix10012 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Someone has been following Lotta, a woman who appears to be waiting for a lover. The tryst is set for a youth hostel. When the man arrives, we realize he is a clergyman. The action changes to the two lovers making love in the room. For all indications they are engaging in an extramarital affair. The man talks about telling his wife he will leave her so he and Lotta can be together. Stepping outside, Henrik Nordstrom, the priest, is shot and is badly injured.

Kurt Wallander is called to the investigation, which, at first, appears to be bizarre. Henrik has been well liked in the community. The police finds out the rifle used is a South African weapon. Kurt's focuses the investigation in a charity organization that has ties with the African country. This group sends used medical equipment, as well as drugs to the poor in that country. Peter Unell, the head of the organization comes under suspicion from the authorities.

Nordstrom never get over his injuries. His wife, Asa, agrees to stop the ventilator that is keeping him alive and donating his organs. When the police interview Asa, they find out she is not forthcoming. In fact, they also discovers Asa has joined a radical sect that follows a hard line on adultery. She is also considered a suspect in the assault to her husband.

Katarina has been showing an interest in Pontus, who is studying to be a lawyer. Wallander, who obviously likes the woman, cannot get her to accept his invitation to go out socially. Kurt also discovers Pontus is a frequent guest at her place. Katarina thinks she knows that Peter had an ulterior motive for trying to kill Henrik and he is arrested after the discovery of the murder weapon in his car. His lawyer, a man to professes a friendship with Peter, shows an interest about the charity organization that appears to be clean of making a profit with drugs.

Another good episode based on Henning Mankell's work. The adaptation is by Pernilla Oljelund and Henrik Georgsson directed this chapter in the series. The basic themes running through the episode are adultery and illegal profits from what should have been a charity group interested in doing good for needy people. The attraction Wallander feels for Katarina is visibly also, complicated by what looks her interest in a younger man Kurt cannot compete against.

The regulars do a good job. Krister Henriksson is effective as Wallander. Lena Endre is excellent as Katarina.

Predictable and boring
ssidenius5 November 2020
Getting bored of the scenes where the police is not doing their job properly. I want to fire the tall blond guy. And how do the trainees always get in trouble? It's not very interesting.

Less murders than expected
Tweekums3 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
When a priest is shot after an assignation with a married woman suspicion initially falls on her husband and his wife. The victim was a local priest who was involved with a company which sold medical equipment which was considered outdated in Sweden to African countries where it would be of use. Initially it looks like the companies action which while legal are profiteering from third world need although when the books are examined it turns out that they don't balance. The investigation leads the police to discover the company has been supplying counterfeit drugs; these were made by the same factory as the real medicine but are sold at a price much lower than the official cost, this is of course illegal but somewhat less immoral than most crimes. It looks like this is just a red herring when evidence emerges to show that one of the suspects knew about the affair and a search leads to the discovery of the murder weapon in the suspect's car.

While I enjoyed this episode well enough it wasn't one of the better ones in the series; the body count is much lower than one would expect and the strength of the evidence against the chief suspect makes it fairly obvious that he will turn out to be innocent. As always the acting seemed good, even if I had to rely on the subtitles as I don't speak Swedish.

Rating has nothing to do with the story...
gdtrfb553 May 2024
...but, rather, with the subtitles on the Viaplay on Roku app. For this episode, the subtitled dialogue was literally minutes behind the spoken Swedish dialogue. Thinking it was just a problem with episode 6, we fired up the next one, only to discover that the subtitles for it had absolutely nothing to do with the action...and were actually from the preceding episode! At that point, we just gave up, so we don't know whether the problem went beyond episodes 6 and 7. Zero quality control, and nobody to report the problem to, which pretty much sums up the 21st-century, end-stage capitalism consumer experience.

The Eternal Triangle--Not!
Hitchcoc1 December 2015
I liked this one. A priest (obviously non-Catholic) is having an affair with a woman. They choose an out of the way place that has few visitors during off season. After their tryst, he is leaving and a person comes from the bushes with a rifle and shoots him. Things point to the husband of the woman with whom he is having the affair. The confusing factor is that both me have been part of a company that sells drugs and used medical equipment to African countries. It is said to be a humanitarian organization, but there are extenuating circumstances. They investigate both the company and the principles involved. This is a chance for the younger set to get involved in the investigation. Pontus and Isabelle play a significant role in the process. Kurt also becomes jealous of Katerina who is helping Pontus with his university work. This is nicely done because all the suspects are interesting and the resolution is not clear till we get to the conclusion.

Kurt & Katarina finally do it?
BILLYBOY-1015 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
At the end of another utterly engrossing/satisfying episode,at night they are watching fireworks on her deck, he confesses he was jealous of the time she had been spending with Pontus (sp) tutoring him on his tests. They go inside for some wine. The next scene, it is sunrise and he is walking along the beach, sans his dog skipping stones into the water like a kid. Did he just come from her house where he spent the night? They have been dancing around all this time. She is going to be 50 and will be having mid-life crisis. He has apparently been "without" for some time. The implication is so subtle but why him walking along the beach at sunrise?
