Any user who regularly follows IMDb and watches tamil movies and are impressed by some quality works in tamil and had watched katradhu tamizh would give it a 10/10 with eyes shut. You got to see the movie to believe it is such a movie. A movie might have a great story but might lack screenplay, music or acting and in other ways also. But can you imagine a movie where everything was 100 % perfect ? Watch katradhu tamizh. Story and Screenplay is pure magic. Acting ... Hmmm There are only few in tamil cinema who gets compared to Kamal haasan. And probably, Jeeva walked with that crown quite easily... He has defined acting in the movie. Music... C'mon... This is the best music you could have ever heard. Yuvan had given some really soul stirring numbers that make you go into a trance. Editing by sreekar prasad makes you feel not watching a movie but something real and cinematography is another feather in the cap. To cap it all, the director is a debutant. Unbelievable. Isn't it ? Watch Katradhu tamizh.

The movie is a great take on the current Indian scenario where rich people are getting richer and poor people suffer due to that and also the frustration and anger that is building on the less privileged people.

This is one of the best movie one could ever see... Just don't miss it.

The Best , yes i mean it

When everyone going GA GA about Bolly wood, as usual a simple Tamil movie wins hands down. This is perfection. Right from the direction, followed by cinematography, acting, music everything blends so well to make it a master piece. Its pity that this flick didn't do well commercially. However who cares? its a must watch for any movie buff. Jeeva with a meaty role and the heroine is a revelation to Tamil cinema. Prabahar, the director has joined the league of Bala and Ameer easily.

Some say Nayagan is the best movie made in contemporary Tamil cinema.Here comes the winner to surpass it with its simple beauty with lots of elegance, satire, the feel and everything.

It will hit you hard. Period.

A maelstorm of intrapersonal communication

Probably one of the greatest films ever made in Tamil and definitely the best directorial debut in Tamil, Kattradhu Tamizh is about a Tamil teacher earning hardly 2000 INR a month, finding difficult to cope with loneliness living in a city like Chennai, trying to get back in touch with his long lost childhood love, unable to withstand the societal imbalance created largely by IT industry and therefore becoming a psychopath.

The screenplay's narrative structure takes you back and forth in time and changes from the protagonist talking to the audience then to himself and them to a camera yet doesn't create an ounce of confusion.

The cast is perfect. Jiiva excels in a role and a performance of a life time. He excels in every scene and manages to pull it off whether he is going over the top (like the scene where he confronts an IT guy on the street in the middle of the night) and while he expresses his emotions subtly (like his reactions in the Paravaiye Engu Irukiraai number), newcomer Anjali emotes exceptionally and is probably the only lady who can actually 'act' in Tamil Cinema for the time being, Karunas is better off playing such roles that are more memorable than his other silly characters, Azhagamperumal is another revelation and even the other small roles such as the heroine's uncle, the hero's friend, his lodge mates etc etc are so perfectly cast.

Yuvan Shankar Raja's songs are too good, the get right to the point literally, all the songs have the lyrics starting off immediately without a long beginning music and his background score enhances the mood of the film well.

Cinematographer Kathir's frames are a work of art. The shots of the little hero & heroine sitting on the top of a mountain with all the greenery around and then a very similar shot of the hero & heroine sitting on top of a mountain years later with all the dried up land around is example enough of his visual extravagance. Editor Sreekar Prasad's work is slick and enhances the narration perfectly.

Director Ram with his debut has already made an inedible mark on Tamil Cinema. Though most in the audience do not agree to his views on society a few like me willingly support them. Well accept his views or not you just cannot dismiss his efforts in creating a screenplay that puts 99% of all other Tamil films to shame, breathtaking visuals, a kaleidoscope of emotions and a realistic storyline and biting dialogues. You can't ask for more from a film.

An artistic triumph for everyone involved(including the audience who appreciate such work).

It's the best movie ever made on earth

This movie means a lot to me. Not just by its quality but also by what it conveys and by how I come to relate to it.

This movie is more about love than anything else. For all those guys and girls who love one person a week and have a break-up in every weekend and to those who think that love is all bout taking your girl on a bike ride and spending a day off at the seashore, this movie shows you what love is.

This movie is a slap at the whole society's face. It shows what worthy people have been denied of. It shows how unfair the system is. This is about a man, a hero.... who fights life with everything he has and yet loses... This is about a man who loves a girl with all the passion and truthfulness in this world...This is about a man who didn't get anything he deserved of. This is about the man whose life shows what the society is turning into.

It's about aananthi who loved a man truly and was truthful to him no matter what happened in her life.

It's about a girl who expected nothing other than the love of the man whom she loved in her life... This is about a girl who was able to bear every horror in her life and was still able to smile in the short moments she got to be with prabha.

This is about aananthi, who never gave up her love for cheap pleasures not even for a single moment in her life. This is about aananthi, a girl who lived and died for that single man she loved on earth.

This is about prabha and aananthi.This is about two people who had their soul full of love for each other but only privileged enough to show it to each other only at those rare moments they got to be together but learned to live a life with that love existing in every moment.

This movie is the best movie on earth and this is about the story of a man who loved the only girl he admired since childhood.I admire them so much.

a master piece

really a nice movie.. marvelous direction.. apart from commercial mass entertainer.. these r d ones which reflect art,reality and direction....a life changing movie if felt.. i have became a huge fan of anjali after watching this movie.. my respect for her even increased. she just lived the character rather than playing the character.. i was connected to the story it reminded me of my lover very very much. i cried after watching the movie. it may change the lives of people or at least their thinking about respecting the people in spite of their conditions.. i was already nice to everyone. but this may have changed my outlook towards life..

apart from senseless mass entertainers. these films make us realize the talent and art of direction and cinematography.. hats off to director

A surprise Package

A movie which came up with zero expectations and was highly acclaimed for its shear class.I was really surprised by the fact that this movie was made by a new comer.Everything in this movie is perfect.Story,Screenplay,Direction,Editing,Music,Cinematography and so on.

I need to give a special mention about Yuvan Shankar Raja's music.He suddenly drifted from his stereo type techno genres to this breath taking unorthodox use of violins and flutes.A music which will make u vibrate,Make u cry,make u feel the pain of love and what not.Hats off to him.

One big reason i went for this movie is Sreehar Prasad.A six time national award winner has proved his class once again.

The actors were just on target without overdoing their part and were perfectly suiting the roles.

The director truly is precious gem to the Tamil cinema and has really got the potential to take Indian cinema to world stage.

In spite of great reviews and acclaims,this movie wasn't a commercial success and didn't get any awards.This really pricks me each and every time i watch this movie.Such good and bold cinema can come in Tamil or rather in India only if their hard work is recognised.

I think this is the one of the finest movie in Tamil Cinema ever made. The reasons are background music, cinematography, editing, lighting, acting and finally the screenplay and making. The director done a very good job. The story is about a guy wants to get his master degree in Tamil and what happens. His childhood friend and lover Anandhi who lives with her mother and uncle. After finished his degree, he could not get a job due to Tamil degree. But his friends who don't even know how to speak English, they got a job and getting salary in thousands. So he got mental depression and suffered a lot. Her lover Anandhi also moved to north India. The 75% of the film is flash back. Prabhakar (Our hero)telling the story to Karunas who have the camera. After that he went for Anandhi. While he was in depression he did two murders. The Making is so good. Dialogues are very interesting. Director Ram has done a very good job. It was his first silver screen movie but you could not find out while watching the movie. Music Yuvan Shankar Raja. One of the best music director in Tamil Cinema. Jeeva as a Prabhakar , also done a very good job. His dialog delivery and expression are really good. Anjali as a Anandhi she also done her job very well. Her cute expression are likable.

Finally 10/10.

Dark and Gritty

One of the best movies of India. Story, direction and acting is beyond brilliant. It is so dark that Joker (2019) will look like a kids film. It is hard hitting and impactful movie. Must be watched by every movie lovers just to enjoy the achievement of the movie maker in storytelling and direction.

Kattradhu Thamizh - A master piece from Debut Movie Director Ram

When the season of commercial movies were ruling the box office, suddenly comes this man 'Director Ram', with a script which is way new and a very disturbing story in Tamil cinema. There are few movies to be remembered in the past and Tamil M.A is one among them.

The plot and the screenplay of the movie is something new and it is still consider a movie to be played in all media colleges for film learning. The story travels with a man who is graduated in Tamil and the struggles he goes through to live a happy life which eventually affects him mentally. He searches for his love 'Anandhi'.

This movie is been re-released after 10 years in few theaters in Chennai, and I got a chance to see this film in big screen. Kattradhu Thamizh is one among the best films ever made, and the character's realized their importance of the role and gave their best.

If your passionate about films/ budding directors, you should really check out this movie. This movie teaches you all about Cinematography, Editing, Screenplay, Characterization, Directing and so on.

Yuvan's music carried the movie so beautifully. The album hit from musician Yuvan were in loop in all play list, even Today.

Director Ram is the only one who wants to try something new for his fans and for Tami cinema.

Kattradhu Thamizh, never fades away no matter how many movies we watch.

A very depressing film to watch which attempts to break the silence on social inequalities and torture with atrocious characterization. Kattradhu Thamizh is Tamil cinema's attempt to bring that disturbing and socially harrassed character which we saw in Hollywood movies of 70s. 'Taxi Driver' should be the best example to find the similarities and recently we saw 'Joker' (2019) too on the same theme. I haven't mentioned Satyajit Ray's 'Abhijaan' because i felt that film had quite stable character and mainly because it was an Indian film only. Kattradhu Thamizh is mainly set in IT Industry era and unnecessarily drags one or two more professions to prove its point. A young post-graduate faces difficulties with finding employment, and struggles against social inequalities. The film also focuses on his childhood, again some horrible facts that helps the narrative to find its reliability and reasonable motive. The film goes wrong with some theories while overintesifying the mental state of the protagonist's mind. That scene when he visits a lavish office of his friends and gets angry by knowing his salary and after a while almost molests a girl. Why? Was he completely mad? Even crazy people don't do such stuff, no matter how much psychologically disturbed one is. There are some more scenes like this when i didn't find the protagonist doing good and then i became sure about how it's gonna end in the climax. However, the overall narrative is highly engaging and dark. Jiiva's compelling performance kept me hooked throughout. Even Anjali was superb in her role. Director Ram's debut surely deserves praise for trying to do something excessively intense and dark in Tamil Cinema. The film justifies its genre, rather i say redefines it but the Speech is senseless sometimes. That's the only reason i have reduced one star, rest Splendid!

A movie to study about Thamizh cinema

This movie is not good just because of acting or social message or anything but mainly because of Yuvan's the background score and dialogues.

Background score - Few movies in the world can be compared with background score of this movie. One of the good competitor in top background movie score.

Dialogues - as most of you know, Thamizh is the oldest language in the world, 2000 yrs. old, director hit as hard as he can. The dialogues switching between English and Thamizh, make you think how sweet is Thamizh. In no place director stop using the Thamizh. I would say he used it as tool.

More import thing is Location. Let me describe a couple of scene, that will tell you all about the locations used in the movie, when the Praba and Anathi were kid, their love was sweet , their love site is greeny mountains with clouds surrounded, when they are gown-up, their love is bit bitter, and the love is site is deserted mountain.

A simple story with heavy loaded presentation. A story u see or u think of it in day-to-day life, but Ram gave it very well.

There is no logical or reasoning in real life.

This movie will affect your life for sure.

I'm writing this review after watching this movie for the 12th time.. I would strongly recommend this movie for any non Indian people without any hesitation. This movie is technically sound in terms of cinematography, direction and sound design. Another element which adds awe factor is the background score and soundtracks of YUVAN SHANKAR RAJA.. This is one of the best works of yuvan..Score given by yuvan suits every tragical situation portrayed in the movie.. And to sum it up this movie is from a debutante director which leaves me in awe and admiration..

But this movie was a commercial failure coz it doesn't have the so called "commercial elements" like a crappy love with dialogues degrading women, heroine with a white complexion, glamour, an awful to listen or watch obscene duet or a item number, a far from reality action sequence where the protagonist smashes through the villains, and finally some crappy self referring dialogues and the list goes on....

I actually want to thank my fav. Mr. Yuvan Shankar Raja, Late Mr. Na. Muthukumar for dragging me to see this epic movie with the songs they made. I almost got to understand the story and soul of the movie by the songs. They are still the most played songs in my playlist.

I hardly watch movies but I love to watch such soulful movies. I don't know how I missed this one.

As I said, one day, my brother introduced the "Paravaiye engu irukirai" song to me. The moment I listen to it, my soul urged me to watch the video song. I watched it on YouTube, then felt something strange, some different kind of feeling inside me.

Then I started searching any official copy of the movie available in some websites like Amazon prime, YouTube, etc. But found nothing. In 2017, a decade after this movie's official content is not available. It's a sad thing to know.

But my mind urged me to watch this. So I watched it on an unofficial site. I feel so sorry for this. Director RAM has created a masterpiece. I felt each and every situation of jiiva and anandhi.

I'm going to find an official DVD of this movie which I want to watch it many times in future.

PS: Director Ram, we want more like this from you

Writing this review after watching the movie years ago. Was listening to a song from this movie sung so soulfully by Ilayaraja that I had to write this review. It was bringing back memories of this movie and was making me emotional. Very realistic and very well done movie.

I like movies that are very captivating. Even if you can guess what is going to happen you still are very interested in the story and the actors. I wish the OTP platforms bring this movie in good quality with good subtitles. Fantastic music by Yuvan and great acting by Jiiva and Anjali. This movie along with Jai Bhim are proof that Tamil film industry can come up with movies that are really good. Not an easy subject but definitely a must watch movie.
