Loud, forced humour and very irritating.
MUFCOK19 October 2023
Anuvahood is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's not a great film by any means, but it is entertaining and a good time. When I saw the trailer for Sumotherhood, I won't lie to you, it looked pretty bad. Much more slapstick, much more 'action' comedy than the first movie and only a sprinkling of the original cast returning. Nevertheless, after a couple of beers and some food, we decided to give it a go. How bad could it be?

... It's pretty bad.

One thing that I found quite jarring is that the names and characters have changed from the first movie? The two leads have different names and the other returning actors are playing different characters. I can only imagine Adam Deacon wanted to get the full gang back to play the same characters but they weren't having it so he got what he could and changed them completely.

This movie is loud, too loud. The shouting gets irritating after about 15 minutes and that delivery of shouting jokes and screaming all the time just isn't that funny. Not to mention that 9 out of 10 jokes just aren't funny. There are some good one-liners in this, and I did have a few chuckles, but it just wasn't enough.

Adam Deacon has bipolar and I believe that is why he has been away from acting for quite some time and his inclusion of mentioning this in the movie is about a subtle as a third nipple. The ending is also hilarious with some social commentary shoehorned in which is completely out of place and out of the blue.

The cameos are in the trailer and aside from Jeremy Corben saying 'allow it wasteman', they all add nothing to the comedy.

Overall, the movie is pretty bad, it's not that funny, it's repetitive and it falls flat on so many occasions. Surprisingly though, it's actually better than I thought it would be.

A very generous 4/10.

Sumotherhood

Warning: Spoilers
I remember seeing the film Anuvahood in 2011, which served as a spoof of British urban teenage dramas, including Kidulthood and Adulthood, the trailer featuring many celebrity cameos looked appealing, it is not a sequel but a reboot. Basically, Richard aka "Riko" (Adam Deacon, also writing, producing and directing) and Kane (Jazzie Zonzolo, also producing and writing) are best friends who share a bunkbed in East London. They are £15,000 in debt to a local Indian crime family, the Patels. In desperation, they plan to get the money back by any means necessary. The first attempt is to try and get a gun, but this fails when they confuse the word "strap" from the man they contact. Their second attempt is to rob star rapper Lethal Bizzle (as himself) in a nightclub toilet, but they are knocked out, stripped and embarrassed by a video of them which goes viral and makes them a laughingstock. Riko and Kane try to think of other ways to make money, but they see no other option but to carry out a bank robbery. Wearing balaclavas and using paintball guns, they hold up a local bank and demand money. But the bank clerk Rowanda (London Hughes) recognises them, they end up arguing in front of the customers and staff, including politician Jeremy Corbyn (as himself), to the point they accidentally reveal their identities. During this chaos, a man named Leo DeMarco (Danny Sapani) ignores their demands and dares them to shoot him. One of them accidentally shoots him with a paintball, causing him to have a heart attack and collapse. Riko and Kane go into hiding following the failed bank job, but they unintentionally gain a reputation. There may be a Russian criminal leader Krzysztof (Peter Serafinowicz) getting involved with something as well. They are soon found by men who work for East London firm leader Shotti (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith) who is impressed that they may have killed a rival gang leader. Riko and Kane, wanting to impress these criminals and make some real money, make up a tall tale of what happened at the bank, with Riko giving himself the nickname "Rambo Riko". Shotti recruits Riko and Kane, along with gang member Dwayne (Arnold Jorge) to retrieve a bag of drugs and money from a nightclub. Riko gets distracted by a girl named Tamara (Leomie Anderson) who he falls in love with. Riko and Kane get into a fight with rival gang members, but the duo wins the fight and escape. Riko explains his bipolar disorder to Dwayne and the two form a friendship when he reveals that he has autism. They then realise that they forgot the bag from the club but cannot go back to get it because of rogue and xenophobic police officer Ian (Vas Blackwood) and his partner Bill (Barry McNicholl). After crashing the car, Riko and Kane are caught but Dwayne escapes. Meanwhile, Leo is recovering in hospital; his mentally unstable brother Tyrese (Richie Campbell) vows revenge against whoever has done it. Riko calls Tamara at the hospital, she happens to be Leo's stepsister. Tyrese rages finding out about their relationship and goes on the hunt for Riko, even running over a policeman mistaking the latter for him. Riko and Kane are released and go back to Shotti who is infuriated that they forgot the bag. But Shotti is informed that they beat up a member from a rival gang and forgives them. Shotti lets them tag along for a deal at a warehouse with Polish gangsters. Tamara calls Riko and asks to meet up but this is a trap set by Tyreese. Ian and Bill have found out about the exchange and arrive at the warehouse, poorly attempting to be the Polish dealers. Tyreese's gang arrive along with Tamara and Riko confesses that he didn't mean to hurt Leo, which angers Shotti. The situation is worsened when a pen with a built-in microphone and GPRS is found in Riko's coat, leading everyone to believe that he is working for the police, including Kane. Riko reveals that Ian gave him the pen, and soon a gunfight begins, causing many gang members to die in the process. Riko and Kane reconcile and take part in the gunfight, leading to Riko getting shot. Kane and Tamara help him and try to escape from the warehouse. Shotti tries to stop them but is knocked out by Dwayne. Shotti's bag full of drugs and money is taken by Dwayne, and the four escape while the police arrive. Detective Inspector Brookes (Jennifer Saunders) arrives to take control and tells Ian off for going rogue and causing mayhem throughout the city. He is sacked after she informs him about a sexual misconduct complaint against him, and before leaving she tasers him in the testicles. The Patels break into Riko and Kane's home to find they have left, leaving a payment of rupees, enraging the leader Pinky Patel (Bhasker Patel). In the end, Riko and Kane, along with Tamara and Dwayne, have left England and escaped to live a new life in Los Angeles. In a post-credits scene, Shotti is being interrogated by the police, he watches a social media video of Riko and Kane dancing with the money and is visibly annoyed. Also starring Ed Sheeran as homeless man Crack Ed, Jaime Winstone as Sarah, Linda Robson as Cockney Woman, Rosie Jones as Random Disabled Lady in Bank, Kevin Bishop (also producing) as Random Customer in Bank, Babatunde Aléshé as PC Williams, Denise van Outen as a Nurse, Tamsin Outhwaite as Ambulance Worker, Eddie Kadi as Traffic Attendant, Charlie Sloth as himself, and Ella Vaday as herself. Deacon has been through legal issues in recent years, including charges of harassment and possession of a weapon, some of which can be explained by mental issues, but he seems to have recovered and incorporates mental stuff into his character, who takes pills for bipolar disorder. Deacon is reasonable in the lead role, alongside Zonzolo, they do make a likeable enough twosome of idiots, Campbell did make me laugh being the over-the-top lunatic stepbrother, while it is only reasonably fun to spot the many recognisable comedians, soap stars, and pop stars, and Corbyn. The script filled with fast-paced dialogue, teen banter and many uses of "fam" is mildly amusing, while the story involving East End gangs and dodgy cops is not the most engaging all the time, it could have been much funnier, a slightly dull but sort-of watchable comedy. Okay!

Sumotherhood
CinemaSerf19 October 2023
Aside from a rather fun cameo from Ed Sheeran that reminded me that he probably lived a street life not a million miles away from the characters here when he was younger and homeless, the rest of this is really rather disappointing. As you'd expect from Adam Deacon ("Riko"), the writing is break-neck paced and littered with humour, contemporary references and there is a definite chemistry between him and his sidekick (and co-writer) "Kane" (Jazzie Zonzolo). Petty criminals in just about every sense of the word, they find themselves £15k in the hole and desperate to raise the cash. Looks like a robbery is the solution - so they try. A wealthy gent in the toilet? A bank branch? Will they make the cash and escape with their lives? If you listen to the dialogue then it is certainly cleverly constructed with some potent observations contained within the relentlessness of the delivery. It's that last bit that I struggled with, though. It plays way too much to linguistic stereotypes and my brain actually felt more attacked by the constant verbal onslaught than entertained enough by it. I think if I had seen this on stage with just the two men, then it could have made for a belter of a two man show shining a light on their East London community, but as a film the visual comedic elements are all just a bit too predictable and I found the other characterisations - there are really only two of note - just a bit annoying. There's far too much soundtrack and I also felt Deacon just a bit too old to carry off the role very plausibly. It has it's moments, just not enough of them.

Annoying
ethanbresnett15 November 2023
Sumotherhood seemed like it had good potential and the start of the film was promising, but it just got far too annoying from there.

Firstly the characters are just too out there. There's always a fine line with a parody film and this one crossed it. The lead characters Rico and Kane are way too overacted and loud and just not that fun to follow. None of the cameos really work either. It almost feels like a Red Nose Day special the amount of random and awkward cameos they shoehorned in.

The humour is fine but just so overdrawn. All of the jokes are dragged on for too long to the point where they just aren't funny anymore. They just didn't know when to stop.

Surprisingly the plot is actually fine. Nothing amazing but definitely not awful. Unfortunately it is let down by the points above, resulting in an awkward and tiresome film.

It's a shame because I think a lot of the core pieces of a good film are here but they are just presented really poorly.

Utterly disappointed, waste of time and money.
joemulljuly5 November 2023
As there was no showings for the killer I thought I'd give this a go and although Anuvahood was a let down I am a big fan of both brotherhood and kidulthood. Poor unoriginal jokes, Awful acting and boring characters. 90 minutes felt like an eternity. I have a real tendency for falling asleep in the cinema and I wish I could've for this. There was only 1 scene I enjoyed and that was Jeremy Corbyn complaining about the tories but apart from that I can't think of anything else. Even Ed Sheeran was a bore. If I could give one piece of advice to anyone who is reading this it would be spend the £10 on killers of the flower moon instead.

Tried way too hard to be funny
jpblondi199517 October 2023
I wasn't expecting this to be amazing but thought it would at least be funny from the trailer. This was definitely wrong. Don't get me wrong, there were a few funny moments and an unexpectedly bizarre cameo from Jeremy corbyn that made me laugh, but overall the directors were trying way too hard and it just fell flat. If they hadnt tried to force the comedy so much it could had worked, but instead it just felt overdone and cringey. I felt genuinely bored for most of it as did my partner and the majority of the cinema...a packed screening and probably heard about 2 laughs the entire time. I'm rating it 3 stars to match the 2 laughs I had and 1 for the cameos. Don't waste your time on this poor attempt at nostalgia.

Not as good as the first but still hilarious
cmdown-5050614 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Anuvahood is an absolute classic and I knew it would be hard to top so although I had high expectations for this film I'd be lying if I said I said I didn't love it.

I was a little disappointed at first that it wasn't a sequel but that feeling quickly left after a few minutes because this film had me in stitches from the get go.

There are a few moments that I feel did need to be cut (the whole police part near the end being the main one) but overall it's a decent watch thati can definitely see myself watching again just for the fun of it.

Hopefully we get some more movies in this universe because they're really enjoyable.

Home Alone Syndrome!
Go_For_The_Jugular24 December 2023
You know how Home Alone 1 and 2 are timeless classics...and every other Home Alone after them have been absolute abominations...

Well that's exactly what we have here with 'Sumotherhood'. Kidulthood and Adulthood were brilliant, but every spin-off since has been pure garbage.

Appearing to be written by school kids on a bus home from school...unfunny, OTT stereotypes, forced, pointless cameos, almost zero story...the whole thing is just WACK!

I literally only laughed ONCE, during the Ed Sheeran scene...he was only on for about 45 seconds...and the fact that he was the best thing in the entire film, tells you all you need to know.

These guys are living in the past and trying way too hard to keep this franchise alive.

Get some professional writers, start a new project ..and move on!

COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME - 0 STARS
thesjourney12 April 2024
Annoying, cringy and REALLY not funny even though the acting and storyline tried sooooo hard to be funny. I'm sure all the celebrities that got tricked into appearing in this feel a little ashamed to be associated with this failure deep down. I'm sure their aspirations were the complete opposite to the finished product. Adam Deacon shouldn't have tried to use "hood" at the end of any of his film titles to try and borrow clout; making people think it has anything to do with Noel Clarke's well written trilogy. Adam needs to figure out what year it is and stop living in the past. I would have given the storyline grace if it was written by a secondary school child/group of friends 10 years ago. I think his blame game has come to an end now.... this film was self-sabotage at it's best! SMH (this waste of time was so bad, I kept stopping myself from turning it off and then made my very first film review)

Were Back Blud!
BrnzReviews13 January 2024
As a man who appreciates a good laugh and an entertaining film; I enjoyed this. The movie was full of cameos that I didn't expect and hilarious moments. I've always been a fan of the hood movies (Kidulthood, Adulthood, Brotherhood, Anuvahood and now Sumotherhood, absolute classics.

We need more films like this, no seriousness, no over dramatically cancelling people, just straight laughs, I recommend it highly. What I respected about this is how Adam Deacon can use his mental health issues to dive deep into this character as i noticed alot of him being bipolar which is his real life condition, insane and amazing.

Dry bants, painful watch
alexv-3663216 December 2023
In really loved the first film but this is a hard watch. The first film was a mix of funny and silly but it worked. There is a couple a funny parts of the film but mainly is a load of rubbish. Even the bits that with Tyrone is over done. He was hilarious in the first one but his character is just plain stupid. There is no real story to the film and it just gets more stupid.

I wasn't such a fan of the first film I would have turned it off after the first ten minutes. There is one or two funny scenes like the bank robbery but they ruin it by over playing it. It's good to see Adam Deacon back on the screens as he has always been funny but this attempt it's just dry.

Why all the hate?
fahimanwer19 December 2023
I don't know what all the fuss is about, actually liked it and thought it was quite funny. It's not to be taken seriously in any shape or form , after all it is a comedy, just enjoy the ride people.

Well scripted, the jokes were funny, and some great cameos, which you knew from the trailers but good to see nevertheless.

Really good to see Jazzie back in his element along with his other fellow youtube actors from back in the day together again.

If Adam Deacon and co are up for making further comedies then would definitely give it the time of day. Respect to you Adam for persevering and getting this film made.

Sumotherhood
brankovranjkovic10 November 2023
British made comedy drama.

Two young wannabe gangsters, Riko and Kane, owe their landlord £15K, they have a time limit to pay back and decide to rob a megastar rapper backstage for his gold watch, gold chain etc, of course this goes disastrously wrong. Next, they plan to rob a local bank, but this also goes wrong and leads them to one of East London's most notorious gangs. Also includes the obligatory love interest

Many slapstick capers and lots of cameos from British comedy and music stars (Ed Sheeran for instance) Made for a young audience, but I laughed several times.

Well made British cinema is always worth a look.

Terrible steaming pile of .......
Stelboytrotter25 January 2024
What an absolute waste of time this film was. It tries to be funny and sadly fails massively. I gave up after 40 minutes as it's over acted and really not funny at all.

Maybe my 14 year old son might find this funny. It's a shame as I was looking forward to this as I'm a massive fan of Adam and Anuvahood was brilliant from start to finish.

The only highlight in the 40 minutes I did watch was Ed Sheeran playing the crack head but even that was a massive push to raise a small or even a giggle.

Unless you're stupidly bored or stupidly high I'd give this a massive miss and go and head butt a wall as they would be more enjoyable.

tries hard to be way too funny
giovannithomas-5708720 December 2023
This movie is the definition of that one student in secondary school whose whole humour consists of repeating and rinsing the same jokes over and over, but now attempts to make a full career out of it. I think due to this, as well as the fast pace, that some of the jokes land half ass or don't sink in very well leading to really dull segments. The forced in lingo gets tiresome within the first 20 minutes to the point making you think if the script was either AI generated or written by the same people who wrote the last season of Top boy. Fortunately there were moments within the movie(particularly the first half) where the jokes were genuinely funny.

Was gonna give it a 4 but it was genuinely good to see faces from the old YouTube 2011 era such as the two main characters themselves and others( Diary of a Badman, Smokey barbers and Black and Brown). Not to mention the acting is top notch and the budget was utilised well.

Overall it's a film I would recommend to watch once and not numerous times.

I had looked forward to this film I knew what I was getting silly comedy nothing to serious. I liked anuverhood it was strong. Sadly there was to much shouting and swearing in this. Some of the characters are just silly they add nothing the cameo's add nothing really a lot of the lines are recycled from other films and it almost like a slight pause after saying them as if to say look what we just said.

I do think Adam Decon can write something better than this something stronger funnier.

It makes a change not to have all these hard hitting gang films though. If you want to remove ya brain and zonk out this film is for you you won't remember it a few days after seeing it.

A poor attempt at British comedy
redpupp13 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was excited to see Sumotherhood, and from the trailers, it seemed like a good laugh.

However, it was anything but.

There were several moments where I considered getting up and leaving, but I held out to see if there would be any plot developments or a resolution. There was not.

There was next to nothing in terms of 'plot' and very little storyline, all of the characters were never developed and everyone felt very 2D. There were several points that were begging for elaboration or further explanation but it never came. None of the characters were likeable (not that they were supposed to be) and it was a painful watch.

Riko's bipolar was clearly meant to be a plotpoint but also reads like the producer's research was a quick Google. It's never really elaborated on. There was one scene that got so close to genuine plot development but then the director must've gotten bored of that scene because it just... ends.

There were a couple of 'edgy' jokes that fell flat because they were either not actually edgy or awfully executed.

The film included celebrity cameos which was sort of a saving grace. Though, I can see why Ed Sheeran is a singer and not an actor.

2/10 because I never thought I'd hear Jeremy Corbyn say 'Allow it, wasteman'.

Misleading trailer
adrianfarrell29 October 2023
It is my belief that trailers should be extracts directly from the film, this wasnt. The scenes were reordered in such a way that it wasnt the scenes at all, it also contained every element of the film with any semblance of being funny. This was a very very difficult watch with no character engagement and it left us hoping for a freak todal wave to wash everyone away and spare us from thr misery. Click clack more like just clack. Really did want to like this film from the trailer! Cineworld arent helping with their current advert series featuring the two main characters of the film being as gangster as el-mo talking about sweeties, could have been great, wasnt. Avoid.

I planned to watch a comedy. Turns out, it made me very angry.
ghzfnfdg26 October 2023
I planned to watch a comedy. Turns out, it made me very angry. "Sumotherhood" attempts to make people laugh by showing characters peeing, pooping, and shouting. This marked the first time I tried to watch it all over again, giving it a second chance, but I had to leave in the middle of the film. The jokes, regrettably, are disgraceful and downright disgusting. The film's attempt at humour through such crude elements not only misses the mark but ventures into tastelessness. Retreating to puerile jokes detracts from any potential wit or charm. Despite my initial effort to give it another shot, "Sumotherhood" fails to redeem itself, leaving me disappointed and questioning the judgement behind its production.

Fun and a good insight into London's roadman scene
hwiltshire-7262713 October 2023
A triumphant return from Adam Deacon, Jazzie Zonzolo and an ensemble cast, the beginning is probably the weakest part but soon enough it begins to ramp up into utter madness and hijinks, another terrific performance from Richie Campbell as Tyrone and a stand out performance from Kobna Holdbrook-Smith make this a truly fun ride with plenty of tension, mixed in with some cringe comedy and some home truths regarding mental health issues, a worthy sequel. I only hope a trilogy may come to fruition at some point, as I would enjoy seeing them all on screen once again, glad Deacon has made it back onto the silver screen.

Funny, But Nothing Special
vengeance2013 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So, having heard little to nothing about this franchise (I learned it was a little later on after seeing some previews), I went into this one blind. It looked somewhat good & funny, so I thought it would give it a watch.

When Riko & Kane need money, they decide to rob a megastar in a nightclub toilet & hold up the local bank, but things don't go as planned. A misunderstanding leads them into business with one of East London's toughest firms.

I found the film to be amusing somewhat & mildly entertaining. But not great or amazing by any means. The story was all over the place & the plot was a little difficult to follow. The characters are all samey (except for the 2 main leads) & seem paper thin in personalities, which seem to be loud mouthed yobs spouting their mouths off most of the time.

The runtime is ok at 1 hour & 34 minutes (94 minutes) along with some not bad pacing & there's some funny scenes & eye candy to be had. So, there is that to think about, but the vs in the film was unneeded completely, but it's 2023, of course that drivel has to be there, *rolls eyes*... I come to the cinema to be entertained & for escapism, not to be lectured or put down for who I am thanks.

Overall, it's a funny film, but it's wish washy story, vs lecturing & all over the place characters made it sort of a unpleasant watch. Despite some funny scenes & eye candy, this film was too out there.

3/10.

A Disappointing Descent into Mediocrity, Failing to Hit the Motherlode of Comedy.
cottonlee-906052 February 2024
Sumotherhood is an abysmal attempt at comedy that falls flat at every turn. With a lackluster script and uninspired performances, the film struggles to elicit even a chuckle. The attempts at humor are cringe-worthy, relying on tired stereotypes and predictable gags. The storyline is a forgettable mishmash of clichés, leaving viewers longing for substance and originality. Sumotherhood disappoints on every level, making it a regrettable addition to the comedy genre.

It's a painful exercise in trying too hard, with each forced punchline reinforcing the movie's lack of authentic humor. Forced Comedy is a failed experiment in comedy, proving that laughter should never be coerced.

Just as funny as the original
adam-4501919 October 2023
I remember watching the original back in school. I went into the cinema expecting it not to be as funny as the first. I'm so glad I watched this film it the first time for a while a film has made me laugh throughout the whole film. The use of cameos from the likes of Jeremy Corbyn and Ed Sheeran were comical. Ed Sheeran was in a few scenes which was very suprising and his character was so funny. Would love to see a few more films similar to this as. If you loved Anuvahood you'll definitely enjoy this film. Returning characters such as Tyrone, Double Yellow Line guy made it for me. Don't get much nostalgic films these days.

Really really fun
ngnyet15 October 2023
A logical step from the low budget insanity of anuvahood, the fun and fast paced crime thriller is able to have moments of genuine hilarity among well directed chase and fight scenes that I didn't expect from a successor to anuvahood. The soundtrack is a homage to UK grime and club music and I was so happily surprised by the inclusion of jammer as the actual stupidest cameo I've ever whitnessed. Some of the off beat and oddball comedy of the original remains from the original while still having the fast paced action film flow that is required to make a film like this work. Genuinely a lot of fun!

Adam Deacon back on top form
craighartwell16 October 2023
"Sumotherhood," the follow-up to "Anuvahood," showcases Adam Deacon's return with a performance that mirrors his real-life mental health struggles. This film revolves around two desperate road men caught in deep trouble at every turn. Deacon's portrayal in the film contributes to raising awareness about important mental health issues.

The movie also boasts an impressive cast with brilliant cameos from notable figures like Ed Sheeran, Jennifer Saunders, and Jeremy Corbyn. These appearances add a layer of intrigue and entertainment to the storyline.

"Sumotherhood" leaves the audience eagerly anticipating what's next in Adam Deacon's career, as he continues to use his talents and personal experiences to address significant societal stereotypes and challenges.
