Is it just a puppy?
frank-liesenborgs7 April 2023
Chupa is a heartwarming tale of friendship and adventure that takes inspiration from the classic film E. T. It's refreshing to see Christian Slater back on the big screen. The movie follows the story of Alejandro, also known as Alex, played brilliantly by Evan Whitten, who is struggling to cope with the loss of his father to cancer. Living in Kansas City and attending Lakewood Middle School, Alex keeps to himself and is teased by his classmates for being different. But when his mother takes him on a trip to San Javier, Mexico, Alex discovers a new world of experiences and people, which helps him to overcome his grief and start afresh. In the film, Alex befriends a Chupa, a mythical creature known as the Chupacabra who has been separated from its family due to human intervention. The film is not only a moving story of Alex's journey to acceptance, but it also sheds light on how humans often assume things about unknown creatures and how that can lead to negativity and hatred. As per folklore, Chupacabras are believed to attack livestock and drink their blood, but in the film, Alex learns that they are misunderstood creatures. Chupa showcases the beauty of San Javier and the unique Mexican wrestling style of Lucha libre. It also highlights the importance of staying connected with our families and roots, wherever they may be, to maintain our cultural identity and pride. The film is accompanied by touching songs that blend perfectly with the story and serve as a reminder of the importance of cultural diversity and traditions. Every aspect of the film is thoughtfully crafted, making it an enjoyable watch for all ages.

Good movie
dspmzr7 April 2023
Very apt message and very well communicated by the director and screenplay. VFX could be better.the film connect with the audience very smoothly and story carry forward in a smooth fashion. Acting of every character and specially child artists are very good and flows with the story.build up of story and ending could be more elaborative but this can not be the fact which can negate it positive points.one should watch it with family and kids to generate a sense of culture, imp of joint family, conservation of endangered animals, compassion towards animals and importance of always attached to our roots.

Cute and enjoyable...
paul_haakonsen7 April 2023
I sat down with my family to watch the 2023 movie "Chupa" on Netflix, after having stumbled upon it by perusing the new movies on Netflix. And I have to say that I was immediately drawn to the movie, given its cover and its synopsis.

Writers Joe Barnathan, Brendan Bellomo, Sean Kennedy Moore and Marcus Rinehart put together a very wholesome and enjoyable movie for the entire family. I was genuinely entertained by the storyline in the movie from start to end, and it actually offers something for everyone in the family, from kid to adult. And thus, that makes "Chupa" a very enjoyable and watchable movie.

The movie is starring some unfamiliar young talents; Evan Whitten, Ashley Ciarra and Nickolas Verdugo, whom carried the movie quite well. But the movie also have some familiar talents on the cast list, with the likes of Demián Bichir and Christian Slater.

Visually then "Chupa" was really nice. The chupacabra design were rather good, and it wasn't scary, which means that even the younger audience can enjoy the movie. It was quite cute, and it actually worked well in favor of the overall enjoyment of the movie.

If you enjoy family movies, then you definitely have to check out director Jonás Cuarón's 2023 movie "Chupa".

My rating of "Chupa" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Didn't quite hit right but it's fun kid's movie
hazard1117 April 2023
This has like a mix of E. T. and Water Horse but mostly on the premise not much on the heart. It was a bit too short so everything went by quickly so you didn't get to really bond with the whole child meets monster and become friends things. I was like "That was it?"

The Chupa is cute even with the feral cat hyena like design. They met roughly in the middle of the film so really there's not enough time to do much else. I think there was a bit too much of the bad guy sequences, which didn't really need to be that long since they didn't add to anything. They're just typical greedy villains so each screen time they got there wasn't anything new to add other than "We need to find Chupacabra". Hollow villains basically.

The movie's message is meant to be conveying: (As said by Cuarón, the "core message of" Chupa is "the importance of family, particularly in a character who was looking for his roots."). They did insert the characters being together but to me it felt lacking since they didn't dive deeper on what this child supposedly is looking to connect to his roots so he's not really opening up. Then when the main family moment happened it was fast then the next scene it was back to the bad guy sequence up to climax. So even with the usual child and monster friend goodbye scene it didn't really feel sorrowful because you didn't really see them bond together. They just poof close buds.

I would've rated this 5.5 but opted for 5. Chupa being cute isn't enough for me. They had a good message but they let that plot go. Where was the actual connection to his roots? The kids might like it because again, cute cuddly monster. But yeah the show feels dated with the acting and the awkward sequences.

Pretty Decent Family Flick
charles-limcw10 April 2023
Good old fashion family movie with heart without the loud smart-alecky characters and annoying poppy music that plague today's movies.

Characters are properly developed, with normal human qualities.. Also nice to see Christian Slater again, if only he didn't have to play the bad guy.

Plot is straight forward without the ridiculous loophole prone complexities that many third rate writers and directors succumb to today.

Only shortcoming is the main child character is actually the weakest actor of all - his acting is unconvincing and self conscious unlike the natural flow of the others.

Animation and cinematography is fine enough.

Just for the kids.
chand-suhas8 April 2023
Chupa is not that cute of a name for a chupacabra. Anyways, a greedy man is after capturing this mystical creatures in Mexico for medicinal purposes and ofcourse his belief that they exist gets proven to be right. As he tries to capture one, the little chupacabra gets separated. Then there is Alex, separated from his Spanish culture as well as family. On his visit to Mexico to stay with his grandfather and cousins, he stumbles upon the little chupa and in the process of saving it, he learns to value his ancestry.

It started off fine but soon it started losing it's charm. Definitely sticks to the template and few funny scenes do work. What it suffers from is there isn't enough scenes with the kids and the chupa to create deeper impact. The antagonist played by Christian Slater is reduced to a caricature and there is no real threat to elevate the whole escaping with the Chupa as they are being chased. Considering it follows the E. T. template, they could've handled the second and third act a lot better.

Chupa is so cute
LetsReviewThat268 April 2023
What a nice film Chupa was. The design of the creature himself was nice and I liked how it was done. This movie is about a boy named alex, played by evan whitten. He is sent by his mother to mexico to be with grandfather and cousins. Demian bichir was good here and I enjoyed him in the nun as well. So it was nice seeing him in more of a family film and had so charm to him to. Christian slater is the hunter quinn but we dont really see a lot. More to the story it was nice watching the journey and it was just cute. Overall chupa was a nice family movie with a good cast but also it had real heart and shows how a simple movie can sometimes be more enjoyable than a loud hollywood one.

They tried to make something, I just don't know what
rayners-estevez7 April 2023
The Bad: -Acting -The way the story is presented -The actors didn't seem to want to be in the movie

The Good: -They made a Chupacabra movie -It's free with a Netflix subscription -It's a Latino mythology/culture movie

So, let me explain myself, the story is about a more childish version of the "mythical" Chupacabras. While introducing a bit of the Mexican Lucha Libre culture. The acting is horrible, is like the actors know they movie is crap, but they still need a job...The acting seems forced, but it has to do with the fact that whoever wrote this movie didn't even try to make a decent script.

Fable of an adorable flying creature
RedKidBytes9 April 2023
It is almost impossible not to like the teeth-full creature named Chupa. Irresistible cuteness, talks and acts like the most sought-after children's toy. Incredibly creative CGIs bring up the emotions of the cuddly creature at the forefront and establish a believable real bond between the children and the creature.

The director Jonas Quaron also co-written "Gravity" another CGI masterpiece, with his father Alfonso Quaron. And there's no doubt that the same creative genius played the role in developing the character of Chupa.

Alex (Evan Whitten) was sent by his mother to visit his paternal grandfather (Demian Bichir). Alex feels alone ever since the loss of his father and immediately connects to the creature who is also young and lost his parents.

It is a great children's story. It's also great for adults who like children's stories.

Rushed
clydekaila-043108 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The whole thing was rushed. Which created huge holes in the story. Like the studio couldn't afford a more complete storyline. Even if they made this for kids, they could've at least made an attempt to make sense instead of totally abandoning any effort to. Quite upsetting. The acting didn't help as well. Horrible script writing. Horrible screen play. Chupa also lost the plot a bit when he tried to attack Alex that one time in the barn. I guess every scene worth noting felt incomplete either because of the script, acting or screenplay. Totally underwhelming movie. Can't believe they let them make this.

Brought me back
svtcntqnn8 April 2023
As a child from the 70s and 80s, this movie brought me back there. This movie reminded me of what kids movies should be. No agenda. No politics. Just fun. This movie reminded me of what watching movies as a kid was like and should be like. I watched this movie with my 11 year old daughter and she has never watched a movie with me since she was born. However, to night, we watched this together. Just us and we laughed together. Not only did this movie remind me of the lost innocence of a culture, it reminded me of the importance of just enjoying something with your kid. Is this movie great? No. Is it worth it? Absolutely. It's written like it came from a kid from the 80's and I appreciate it very much. Thank you and I mean that.

Cute and heartwarming about a coming of age and coming across a creature.
cruise018 October 2023
3 out of 5 stars.

Chupa is a fair fantasy adventure about a young boy who visits Mexico to see his grandfather. While the grandfather and boy come across a chupacabra creature that is lost and also searching for his family.

It is a cute story. A boy who learns about his culture. And meeting his cousins and there mexican heritage, wrestling, and lifestyle.

The acting is decent with the ensemble. The creature design is cute and heartwarming as the boy becomes friends with chupa. While an American researcher is on the hunt for chupa.

Overall, it is an okay film that is fun for the whole family.

Badly Written and Directed Film for the Slowest Kids on the Block...
transientdreams9 April 2023
Great premise with amazing potential. This was obviously an under-12 kid's movie. More likely, under-8. The problem was that it seemed to constantly and safely pander to the least intelligent among that age group. Like it didn't want to scare them by actually telling a competent story with REAL suspense. It wasted tons of time trying to be clever without ever really delivering a solid 'plot-punch'. One it probably never needed because it was so painfully predictable at every turn. It was very bland and flavorless until it got a bit tense near the end. The acting was solid for the most part. Special green-screen effects were even better than many block-buster films in a few spots. Creature effects were standard fare, but lacked both any real charm or menacing behavior. It was also light-years removed from the many hundreds of eyewitness reports from people in several countries. The 'real' Chupacabra is actually something quite terrifying and gruesome. Not smiley, cutesy, and fuzzy. A little research would have helped, but likely would have been ignored. The few minutes of suspense here was worth the watch, yet it was just a very small island in a roughly 90 minute ocean of meandering fluff. Christian Slater looked great, but sounded like a moronic, simpleton 'Bad-guy' with banefully inept dialog. I can completely understand why no one involved with the core production of this film has ever worked for Disney. Demián Bichir saved this film from being a complete flat-lining flop. He definitely gave it some much needed breadth and depth. He is always an awesome character in most of his films. Sadly, it wasn't enough to actually make the film better. Only slightly more watchable. If I was Netflix, I would have tossed this script in the trash, completely redesigned the creature, added some plot, and sub-plot line more worthy of a 10 year old's imagination.

Yes, the main problem today in western movies is that we treat kid's minds and imaginations as if they are delicate, fragile, and need constant protection from being challenged and confronted by the realities of what bad people are truly capable of. You won't find this an issue in most Asian, or other countries. They let their kids know in detail what is the woods, or in the bad neighborhoods and back streets that could possibly hurt, or even kill them with zero censorship. Coddling most kid's minds and imaginations either makes them angry, bored or just outright makes them go find something else to pay attention to that will challenge that hideously BORING 'safe' place they are constantly subjected to. Not a fan of Disney by ANY means, but at least they know how to scare and terrify a kid in a movie, and THEN deliver a decent, satisfying and (fluffy) ending.

Okay family film
Snootz7 August 2023
First, I can understand why some people might not be particularly fascinated with this film, but giving it a 1-star review is ridiculous. You people need to go back to your adrenaline flicks and leave the family films to those who appreciate them.

As a clean family film this is fine. It will keep children entertained, and that's all it's really meant to do.

Adults will quickly realize the plot is as cliche as they come, from beginning to fly-toward-the-camera end. Seriously, there's not an original moment or thought in this entire film.

It does teach a bit about acceptance of other cultures and I'll grant them that. But beyond that, this entire film has been done before, many many times, and better. Of course the CGI was okay and the actors and directing were good. But seriously, did the writers have a single original thought in their heads as they put this together?

So I can only give it a mediocre 5 stars... and it seems like the majority of viewers agree, since this has an average of 5.5 stars as of this writing. This is an okay kid's film, but could have used a whole lot more originality.

Better than expected
battlecrusadersgames26 July 2023
In this family film, a Mexican family discover a baby Chupacabra (a Fabled creature), and want to reunite it with it's family, however a private organisation have other ideas.

I am surprised at how much i enjoyed this and equally puzzled why it has such a low rating. Sure it may have a pretty standard story with the usual schtick, but it had some good morals and pretty decent acting. I even found myself really rooting for the creature and getting teary and the sad parts.

I think it could have done with some more development with the villains, but this is just a simple family-friendly afternoon type film and for that i think it does pretty well.

Humdrum
Roma7314 April 2023
The creature is cute. For that, a few stars. But the writing is pretty bad and lacks conflict (inner conflict, conflict between characters, story conflict). The first half of the movie there's a lot of sidetracking and unnecessary dialogue. And as another reviewer said, it leans on too many minds, jumping back and forth between comedy, action, warm hearted family movie, et cetera. The acting isn't great either, and all this combined makes this movie too boring to feel invested. Even so, my daughter and I did watch it until the end, because Chupa, the movie's best actor (save for a particular flying scene towards the end) is really very cute.

Sweet film, idea not very original
loannis20007 April 2023
The film is beautifully and sweetly designed. It's about friendship and secrets as well as acting morally.

The movie plays not in a fantasy world like other movies but in the real world, which makes it a bit different from other similar movies.

Unfortunately, the film idea is not very original and there are many films with a similar idea and a similar storyline . Anyone who likes to watch Disney films and likes simple stories without having to think too much is in good hands here. The film is well suited for families with children and people who are looking for something pleasant Especially children will like Chupa very much .

Confused
DaveMcG898 April 2023
Idk if it's bad acting or poor directing or both. It's just the most confused movie I have ever watched. The tone just changes randomly.

Initially it started out well but it seizures back and forth between a comedy, action, adventure, suspense, warm hearted family movie, you never know what's next. The plot armour is so think that paired with the deus ex machina of every scene leave all disbelief suspended.

The name of this film popped up mostly because it's ridiculous to call a movie 'sucker' and the plot is self aware enough to actually comment on that and that's just part of the strange things that go on here.

Chupa 2
saeed-150489 April 2023
Very nice movie I really enjoyed it. And hope to see Chupa 2 soon. I think it can be done and sure will get high Rating.

The film is not so long one hour and thirty nine minutes is perfect for people to watch. I was waiting before the end that the kid will get back to his mother and tell her that he didn't regret to go to Mexico. And also get back to his school and show them that he is strong enough to defend himself.

This is just my opinion but sure the Director of the film knows what it should be.

I don't have any more things to say but I did share it with my friends and recommended them to see it.

Definitely a huge misstep for Netflix
Awful. Everything is awful. The script is ultra basic, flat, empty, predictable and even ridiculous. The performances are very amateurish except for a couple of adult actors. The character design is terrible, shallow and purposeless. The creature is super ugly when it should be endearing and the laws of physics don't apply correctly to the little monster. The production design is the most austere thing that exists, in the bad sense of the word.

This movie has everything to be one of the worst of the year, and it's unfortunate, because a beautiful facet of Mexican culture is involved, along with the Luchadores.

Definitely a huge misstep for Netflix.

An Entertaining And Enjoyable Film That Definitely Captivated Me With Its Imaginative Story, Lovable Characters And Stunning Visuals
rannynm8 April 2023
Chupa is an entertaining and enjoyable children's movie that definitely captivated me with its imaginative story and lovable characters.

The movie follows the adventures of Alex (Evan Whitten), a young boy who discovers a mysterious creature known as the chupacabra, AKA Chupa, when visiting his family in Mexico. Alex quickly befriends Chupa and, with the help of his new friend, Alex embarks on a wild and exciting journey to protect Chupa from those who would harm him.

Chupa is a must-see film for children and families looking for an entertaining and meaningful story. The film boasts stunning visuals, with vibrant colors and creative creature design that I love and believe that they are perfectly suited for young viewers. The cast is fantastic, with Evan Whitten delivering a standout performance as both a shy and adventurous Alex, and Christian Slater and Demián Bichir lending their talents to the supporting cast. What really sets Chupa apart from others is its heartwarming message about the importance of accepting and protecting those who are different. With its captivating visuals, talented cast, and important message, Chupa is sure to become a new favorite among young viewers.

The movie teaches children valuable lessons about empathy and kindness, while still making its mark as a fun and exciting adventure. Note that this film does contain violent themes and some inappropriate language.

I give Chupa 4 out 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults. Chupa release on Netflix on April 7, 2023. Don't miss it! By Ashleigh C., KIDS FIRST!

Another masterpiece from Netflix.
giuliobalsamo7 April 2023
Chupa is a movie that resembles depression, animal cruelty, and love in the best way possible. From a first standpoint, it may look like a very simple childish family movie that you'd see on the holidays to hang around, but if you actually watch it and think about it a little bit on the depper side of things. You'll start to realize that this movie is actually about very depressing and sad topics like dementia, animal cruelty, depression and many more things. It's a movie that may even make you cry, especially during the final 30 minutes or at around the 59 minute mark. The movie manages to blend horror and the sad themes from above very well, which turns it into this very realistic and absolutely adorable movie. I won't say too too much about it, as i think movies like this are better watched without knowing much about the story. But in short: This movie has a simple story, turned into an absolute masterpiece of a film. Also, the model of Chupa is really well done.

CHUPA - Someone's Imagination Running Wild
stan_gee9 April 2023
First off, this has to go without being said ... What in Hell is Christian Slater doing in this movie, the guy used to be an "A" list actor, now he's dropped all the way down to the "N" list, makes you wonder who in Hollywood did he tick off. This is just pathetic. The movie itself uses the same old tired plot as every other movie being made in Hollywood where kids have leading roles. These mythical creatures are from the minds of Morons, they look like a cross between between pug-dog and the griffin. Maybe they should have talked to the people in old Mexico about the Chupacabra, and not the old people in New Mexico.

This movie has no fresh ideas and they hoped having Christian Slater in it would give it credibility, it goes show how desperate Christian is to make a movie and put money in his bank account, he's about as believable as a game hunter, as he would be walking naked on the sun.

I wouldn't say it's a bad movie, it's one of those where the kids watching it, would get up and turn the TV to the news channel. Good Luck with this one.

Not worth watching
ivyheroz9 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(There is a TLDR) The ending was a bit too rushed . There's a lot of things that do not make sense to me or my friend whom I was watching with the action started going downhill we started losing interest after 30 minutes. There are multiple things where the characters could be doing something important for example the last scenes or about the last 40 minutes the chupacabra gets tranquilized but the children are trying to push the bad guy away from the chupacabra all they do is get pushed around the only character that is properly used or at least used in an appropriate way is the main character the movie feels as if it is trying to only push the main character forward and then they finally realise that this other characters and try to rush them . As well as there is a scene where the children are being held hostage by the bad guy but the only thing is he does not have a deadly weapon or a weapon with him and the children have at least one hand free which means that the children could push or this punch him that they can run away but the children are just standing there . These are some examples of the characters being there for just the sake of it .the CGI for the chupacabra is good at home but when the character need to interact with it, the future is starts to look a little worse.

TLDR: the what is the concept is good but the excuse was bad.

While the story steals heavily from movies like ET, it's still extremely adorable and perfect viewing for all ages.
trinaboice31 October 2023
IN A NUTSHELL: While visiting family in Mexico, teenage Alex gains an unlikely companion when he discovers a young chupacabra hiding in his grandpa's shed. To save the mythical creature, Alex and his cousins must work together with their grandfather who was a famous Lucha Libre fighter.

The cute movie was directed by Jonas Cuaron Elizondo, who is the son of the Academy Award winner, Alfonso Cuaron! Writers were Sean Kennedy Moore, Joe Barnathan, and Marcus Rinehart.

THINGS I LIKED: While the story steals heavily from movies like ET, it's still extremely adorable and perfect viewing for all ages.

The CGI animals are pretty doggone cute.

The cast includes adult and young Mexican actors I had never seen before. The one face that will definitely be recognizable to many viewers is American actor Christian Slater. It's good to see him in something again.

I thought it was cute to mix in a little fun, Mexican culture like luchadors and certain foods like chorizo, and brain tacos (sesos de vaca.) Yes, Mexicans really do put cow brains in tacos! I was an exchange student in Mexico back in high school when I first discovered that. My Mexican family ordered one for me from a street vendor and wouldn't tell me what was in the taco until I tasted it. I readily admit I liked it more before I knew what it was. EESH!

The musical score is fun and magical.

The movie does a great job illustrating how lonely it can feel to be an outsider. Isn't it a shame that kids and teens are so quick to dismiss others who are unusual, rather than realize that they're often the most interesting?

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE: The title is controversial because it means something "indelicate" in both Spanish and Tagalog.

The "villain" is pretty hollow.

It's yet one more movie where Americans are greedy and want to make a buck off of nature and animals.

TIPS FOR PARENTS: Talk of the death of a father A lot of Spanish is spoken with subtitles.

An underage kid drives a car.

Some "light" profanity in English and Spanish People in perilous sitations Some violence.
