This third episode of the second season takes one page from the truth and reconciliation commissions and decides to put our new friend Cara through some difficult moments.

Cara recognizes that she killed Kahlan's sister, and after Kahlan tries to kill her, Richard tells Cara that it better she leaves. She decides to go home... Seeing a chance, annoying Flynn runs away with his tattoo.

This episode is quite surprising, as it makes characters go through quite intense moments and it actually does a great job in offering different perspectives and judgments. It doesn't shy away from showing how difficult is to take decisions and understand others in some situations. We learn a lot about Cara's past and why she is the kind of person she is. On top of that, there is character development for almost every character, and the script is quite fleshed out. There are still a couple of unnecessary action moments (or necessary, as it seems in these kind of shows you need a sword fight every twenty minutes), but the direction and the work is good all around.

It is a surprising turn of events, but more surprising is the steady hand with which all of it is handled. Quite a good job for a supposedly cheesy show.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode adds substantially to our body of knowledge, especially in the back-story of Cara. Cara has parted company with the main group around the seeker, and returns to her home village of Stowecroft where she is captured - her leather Mord-Sith outfit marks her as trouble, so her sister asks her to change out of her characteristic leather uniform.

We see her captured by the Mord-Sith as a nine-year-old, we find out how she was "broken" by the Mord-Sith as they turn her into one of them. We discover who was close to her and participated in her capture. Kahlan is required to participate in a court and to confess someone, who reveals that Cara was tricked by the Mord-Sith when she was being "broken". The stand-out quotation from this episode, in terms of character background, is the line "Mord-Sith are not made, they are broken".

We learn about how Cara was lied to, we meet her surviving sister in Stowecroft and the bond amongst our quartet is strengthened. The actress playing Cara must have (literally) breathed a sigh of relief when as she prepares to leave Stowecroft, her character puts away the constricting neck-piece and waist-cincher of her costume - this will enable move-fluid movement in the remaining 19 episodes of season two.
