Director Leigh Janiak and the Netflix streaming service brought us a really fun horror event back in the summer of 2021 with the Fear Street trilogy. Three films that were filmed back-to-back-to-back and then released over the course of three weeks – those films being Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. It was an instant franchise, and had the potential to lead to many more films… because, after all, author R.L. Stine has written over 100 books that have been published under the various Fear Street banners. Last year, we heard that Chloe Okuno, who recently made her feature directorial debut with the thriller Watcher, would be directing the next Fear Street movie – and there was even a rumor that she would be helming a whole trilogy of Fear Street movies, just like Janiak did. But during a recent conversation with Collider, Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix Film,...

This one consists of segments that were directed by David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. It even includes references to some Black Phone characters…
Derrickson said, “Oh, there’s actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody’s picking it up. But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he’s behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. He says, ‘He has these dreams that are prophetic.’ And he says, ‘My sister had the same gift.

The most exciting thing about the "V/H/S" films is that, six entries in, the found footage horror anthology series still has the capacity to truly surprise. Less of a cohesive universe and more of a sandbox for various directors to throw their wildest, silliest, gnarliest, and scariest ideas at the wall to see what sticks, the franchise has proven consistent in its inconsistency. An entry that is chock-full of bangers from filmmakers firing on all cylinders will be followed by a film where a few too many segments feels a bit half-assed -- the dip in quality from the largely stellar "V/H/S/94" to the largely undercooked "V/H/S/99" comes to mind.
But as long-suffering horror fans know, there's a joy in watching a long-running series bounce back. And "V/H/S/85" is one of the franchise's strongest bouncebacks yet: there's not a single bad segment to be found, and each story feels fueled by ambition,...

The "V/H/S" franchise is back once again with another installment this year, bringing more found footage spooky goodness to 2023's Halloween season. This time around, "V/H/S/85" will bring the long-running anthology series to the 1980s when slasher movies reigned supreme and the home video market was just beginning to explode. And the folks at Shudder have put together an absolute murderer's row of directing talent to handle the various segments, including "The Black Phone" and "Sinister" filmmaker Scott Derrickson, among others.
Dating back to 2012, the "V/H/S" films have been a bit of a mixed bag (as anthologies often are) with extremely high highs to disappointingly low lows. But after taking a pretty long break they have become something of an annual tradition again, with "V/H/S/94" arriving in 2021, and "V/H/S/99" following in 2022. Now, it's all aboard the '80s nostalgia train. Let's see what that looks like, shall we?

V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99 were major successes for the Shudder streaming service in October of 2021 and ’22, respectively, so it’s no surprise that Shudder has made sure another entry in the horror anthology franchise is ready to begin streaming this Halloween season. The latest entry in the franchise is called V/H/S/85, and a teaser trailer can be seen in the embed above! V/H/S/85 is scheduled to reach Shudder on October 6th.
David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) are the directors this time around. The movie has the following synopsis: An ominous mixtape blends never before seen snuff footage with nightmarish newscasts and disturbing home video to create a surreal, analog mashup of the forgotten 80s.

Shudder, Studio71, Cinepocalypse & Bloody Disgusting are this time rewinding all the way back to the 1980s with V/H/S/85, which will have its World Premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest, in Austin, Texas (September 21 – 28).
“The iconic found footage series returns with an array of explosive, bloody scares set in a decade obsessed with serial killers and the Satanic Panic,” writes Fantastic Fest of the film which says goodbye to the nostalgic neon lights and hello to the grit and grime of the ’80s.
V/H/S/85 joins our growing franchise that now consists of several films, including V/H/S, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, and the spinoff feature SiREN.
Here are the directors who took part in 85…
The only legacy filmmaker is David Bruckner, who will be spearheading the latest entry. Bruckner directed the “Amateur Night” segment of the first V/H/S which featured the breakout performance of Hannah Fierman as a succubus.

While you wait for V/H/S/85 later this year, V/H/S/99 has hit Blu-ray and DVD. Among the extras for the fifth installment in the found footage horror franchise is an audio commentary moderated by Bloody Disgusting’s own The Boo Crew Podcast hosts Trevor Shand and Leone D’Antonio.
All six filmmakers participate for their respective segments: Maggie Levin for “Shredding,” Johannes Roberts for “Suicide Bid,” Flying Lotus for “Ozzy’s Dungeon,” Tyler MacIntyre for “The Gawkers,” and Vanessa & Joseph Winter for “To Hell and Back.”
Here are seven things I learned from the V/H/S/99 commentary…
1. The film almost didn’t have a wraparound story.
Wraparound segments are traditionally used to make an anthology feel of one piece rather than a random collection of shorts, but the producers originally intended to forgo the framing device on V/H/S/99.
It was later decided to use the increasingly ambitious stop-motion...

I'm hit or miss on the "V/H/S" franchise. I love me a horror anthology film, but more often than not, this series comes up short for me. However, every now and then the on-going franchise will produce a segment that rises above the fray, like the excellent "The Empty Wake" from "V/H/S/94." But I think most people will agree that the all-time-best "V/H/S" entry is Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Evans' "Safe Haven" from "V/H/S/2." Not only does it make great use of the found-footage angle (something that can't be said for other entries), it's genuinely scary.

Proving the popularity of the series and the streamer, or not accounting for rising numbers of subscribers it comes as no surprise that the latest chapter of the V/H/S horror anthology series, V/H/S/99 has set a new viewership record this past weekend. Premiering on the festival circuit this past Summer to positive reception from fans and favorable criticle response Shudder was quick to schedule V/H/S/99 in time for the final week of spooky season. It premiered on Friday garnering almost 30 more viewers than the previous record holder V/H/S/94, nearlly a quarter of all on-demand streams on Shudder and the number one movie on AMC+ this past weekend. History repeats itself. When the Shudder streaming service revived the V/H/S/ found footage horror franchise with V/H/S/94 last year, it really paid off for them. V/H/S/94 set viewership records and became the service’s biggest movie premiere ever. That’s why we got V/H/S/99 this year. And Shudder has a hit on their hands again.
Shudder sent out a press release to let us know V/H/S/99 “debuted to record numbers in its opening weekend. Through its first four days of release, the film registered 28 more unique viewers than the previous record holder, V/H/S/94, which premiered on Shudder in 2021. It’s a good thing they already greenlit another sequel – V/H/S/85 – for next year.

During the 31 days of Halloween, Shudder has a spooky lineup of frights for any horror fan and we recommend two movies for these chilly October nights.
Following the success of last year’s hit V/H/S/94 comes this year’s V/H/S/99.
V/H/S/99, which debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, premiered on Shudder on Thursday, October 20. The film features five new stories from filmmakers Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts, Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls) and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream).
V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium.

After almost a decade of inactivity, the V/H/S franchise, a long-running horror anthology series initially inspired by the then-nascent found-footage format, returned last year with an all-new entry, V/H/S/99, filled with multiple stories of varying lengths and quality, the usual wraparound story (also of varying quality), and more than enough blood, gore, and body parts to satisfy even the most jaded gourmands of the horror kind. It was, however, briefly, a welcome respite from the now-fading pandemic. And with premiere horror streamer Shudder to help to fund the newly resurrected series, the future looked grim, dark, and bloody for old and new fans alike. Much like its predecessors, the latest addition to the franchise varies in quality, but unlike last year's entry, V/H/S/94, even the...

Produced by Bloody Disgusting, the hit found footage horror franchise is back with V/H/S/99, now available exclusively on Shudder.
In V/H/S/99, the follow-up to last year’s hugely successful V/H/S/94 – #HailRaatma – a thirsty teenager’s home video leads to horrifying revelations. Capturing the final days of analog as it heads into a new millennium, V/H/S/99 delivers a punk rock attitude and wild horror throughout its five segments.
Why not celebrate accordingly? Let’s party like it’s 1999. We’re pairing each segment in V/H/S/99 with a horror movie from 1999, so you can keep the Y2K vibes going!
Kolobos – Pair with Maggie Levin’s “Shredding”
Levin’s opening segment in V/H/S/99 captures a ’90s MTV-style energy and aesthetic as it follows a group of pranksters with a Cky-like video series. The teens decide to break into an abandoned music venue for their latest mission for fame, and horror ensues.

We’re now more than halfway through October, but have no fear. The new horror releases for the Halloween season definitely aren’t slowing down these final two weeks of the month.
This week brings the Bloody Disgusting-produced found footage franchise V/H/S back with a brand new installment, for starters, along with Jordan Peele’s latest horror project.
Here’s all the new horror arriving October 18 – October 23, 2022!
We kick off the week with Well Go USA Entertainment’s coming-of-age horror-comedy The Loneliest Boy in the World, which was released on VOD platforms beginning today.
Starring Max Harwood (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), The Loneliest Boy in the World is billed as a modern fairytale — except with zombies.
“When the sheltered and unsocialized Oliver (Harwood) is tasked with making new friends after the sudden and devastating death of his mother, he decides that digging a few up (literally) might be his best bet.

V/H/S/99, the fifth entry in the found footage horror anthology V/H/S franchise, won’t be released through the Shudder streaming service until October 20th – but V/H/S/94 was a huge success for Shudder last year and they’re so confident that V/H/S/99 is going to follow suit that they’ve already greenlit another sequel! Aiming for a 2023 release, the next sequel will be called V/H/S/85.
David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) are on board to direct segments of V/H/S/85.
Shudder’s Craig Engler provided the following statement: “Since its inception, the V/H/S franchise has been a showcase for both established and emerging horror filmmakers to terrify audiences with innovative takes on the found footage genre. Following the success of last year’s hit V/H/S/94 and this year’s upcoming V/H/S/99,...

"Remember - fresh souls taste best!!" Who's excited for a scary trip back to 1999?! Our friends at Bloody-Disgusting have debuted the full official trailer for V/H/S/99, the latest horror anthology offering from this wild series. The original V/H/S debuted in 2012, with the first sequel V/H/S/2 out right after in 2013, then V/H/S/94 in 2021. After playing at TIFF and Fantastic Fest, it's screening at the 2022 Sitges Film Festival next. Witness a hellish vision of 1999, as social isolation, analog technology and disturbing home videos fuse into a nightmare of found footage savagery. "Before selfies, before cell phones…" This has five new segments to enjoy: "Ozzy's Dungeon" (it must involve Ozzy Osbourne?!), "Shredding", "The Gawkers", "Suicide Bid", "To Hell and Back". A much better trailer than the teaser! Hilarious use of the Backstreet Boys song in this. All five segments look terrifying!! I'm not sure I'll even be able to watch all of these.

Ahead of the streaming release of "V/H/S/99" this month, Shudder has announced the next installment of the franchise with "V/H/S/85." "Sinister" and "The Black Phone" director Scott Derrickson and "Hellraiser" and "The Night House" director David Bruckner will helm new segments in the found-footage anthology sequel along with Gigi Saul Guerrero ("Bingo Hell"), Natasha Kermani ("Lucky"), and Mike P. Nelson ("Wrong Turn"). Derrickson himself confirmed on Twitter that he has already filmed his segment for "V/H/S/85."
This will be the sixth movie in the main "V/H/S" series, after the original film and its first four sequels, "V/H/S/2," "V/H/S: Viral," "V/H/S/94," and "V/H/S/99." Since the VHS home video format hasn't exactly been in fashion in the 21st century, it makes sense that the series would go back in time to the 1980s with "V/H/S/85" rather than try and move forward into the 2000s.
