Worth a watch.
filipnr-7632412 April 2023
I had no idea what i expected from this movie beforehand. But my expectations were not too high.

I don't watch a lot of Swedish movies anymore. Mostly because of the fact that, they're usually not entertaining. But I've seen some of "Crazy Pictures" earlier work and always enjoyed their humor. Which is why I gave this one a shot.

You can say a lot about this movie, that it's unrealistic, not too much character development and predictable.

But with a good soundtrack, likable/quirky characters and impressive special effects, this movie will probably win you over. It's fast paced and with comedic elements, which will keep you watching.

Honestly a good watch and a step in the right direction for Swedish cinema.

It was interesting...
paul_haakonsen17 April 2023
I stumbled upon the 2022 Swedish sci-fi adventure movie "UFO Sweden" by random luck here in 2023. I hadn't heard about the movie, so I didn't know what I was getting myself into as I opted to sit down and watch it.

Writers Victor Danell and Jimmy Nivrén Olsson put together a fairly interesting script and storyline for the movie. It is a story where the audience are kept pretty much in the dark throughout the majority of the movie. And on that account, I guess it is either a love it or hate it situation for the audience, as I suppose some viewers would like to be filled in on what is actually going on. Personally, then I enjoyed the secrecy and being kept in the dark.

Given my limited exposure to Swedish cinema, then I was unfamiliar with all performers on the cast list. However, I will say that they had a good collection of talents to perform in the movie, bringing the quirky characters to life in good ways on the screen.

While "UFO Sweden" is a rather ambitious undertaking from director Victor Danell, the movie did fare rather well.

Visually then "UFO Sweden" was okay. It is not a movie that made excessive use of CGI and special effects. But whatever effects were in the movie were actually looking quite nice, and helped further the movie in a rewarding manner.

If you enjoy sci-fi movies then you should definitely give "UFO Sweden" a chance. I am not a major sci-fi buff myself, but I did find this movie to be entertaining enough.

My rating of "UFO Sweden" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Predictable, but sort of entertaining
cbswe2 January 2023
This is a B-movie with a high budget. The characters are under-developed and not believable. All technically related stuff in the movie is painfully unrealistic. There is a lot of mindless action that always ends in the way you thought it would.

I think the worst part is actually the characters and the writing. The actors themselfs are mostly fine and deliver (including the two main characters).

But the personalities are one-dimensional and narrow. They never say or do anything unexpected and it mostly feels they are just created to make the story fit together.

I will mention a few plus sides though: The cinematography and special effects are good. The choice of music is mostly good too. The setting in the 90s feels beliavable. It has a bit of funny moments as well.

At best, the movie has some "Stranger things" vibe to it. At worst, it makes you cringe and wanting to fast forward a segment or two.

UFO hunting in swedish way / european cinema going strong
RRHodek14 August 2023
I must say that I knew nothing about this film, all I saw was a teaser trailer on a small screen. But I had a good feeling about the film, although to be honest, I expected something different.

The film is set in Norrköping, Sweden, in the 90s and follows a smart but headstrong teen girl who has lost her father. Yet, there's a possibility he's alive. Intent on finding him and uncover the truth, she visits her father's old colleagues and friends at 'UFO-Sverige,' aka UFO Sweden. Which is, by the way, a real organization founded in the 70s.

This is the kind of film that I am missing in the american cinema these days. The screenplay definitely has an american influence to it though, and by that I mean the good ol' (late) 20th century america. For the most part, the story surprised me in a positive way.

I was also positively surprised by the cinematography. Despite being a relative newcomer to feature films, Victor Danell did a splendid job as a director.

Inez Dahl Torhaug and Jesper Barkselius were both great in their roles, and the supporting cast was solid.

(I see a bright future for Victor Danell and Inez Dahl Torhaug in the film industry!)

If you want to see a fun sci-fi themed film that is easy to watch, I'd recommend this. I rate it a strong 7+/10.

Seems to address a young audience, who can identify themselves with the lead protagonist. Lots of cliches about nerds and other simplifications. Still a nice watch
JvH4825 November 2023
Saw this at the Imagine film festival 2023 in Amsterdam. I assume this to be a movie for a much younger audience, letting viewers identify themselves with the lead actress Denise. Remember (in Dutch) the Bob Evers books, where young amateur detectives find the real truth where officials fail. Obviously, with my 75 years of age, I am way beyond the target group.

Lead protagonist Denise meets a collection of typical nerds in the form of UFO Sweden, a group so very anecdotical nerdy that it becomes too much to bear. Ditto with the 4-letter company owning a secret measurement station in the woods, not appearing on any maps. The company has an unwelcoming head office, seemingly very secure, but two of our nerds obtain access easily (too easy) via a backdoor. We meet their head of research a few times, The first time in the woods next to the officially non-existing station. She has all the appearances of a typical bureaucrat, very reluctant to cooperate. She did not admit that the station exists, even standing in front of it.

Very much later in the story, the same woman proves to be a true scientist under the skin. She changes heart once seeing the truth in the formulas shown to her, and happily works along with two intruders in a way that violates her job description on many counts.

I see little harm in the attempts made to simplify the laws of physics, calling names of famous scientists, mentioning well-known phenomena (relativity, wormholes etc), and using models for wormholes with sheets of paper.

I scored 3/5 for the audience award when leaving the venue. I must admit bias, knowing more about physics than an average viewer, and also not belonging to the target group of young people who are expected to identify themselves with lead-protagonist Denise.

PS: In the introductory address, one of the festival programmers said that the movie industry in Sweden succeeds for a fraction of the budget that Hollywood needs to still fail (said not exactly that; I paraphrase). This vintage movie feels genuine. It shows striking special effects, maybe made with better tools than exis-ted in the 80/90-ties it is situated in, but nevertheless looks neither over the top nor impossible for that era.

Good enough, and then some
visandne9 November 2023
The movie Interstellar comes to mind even if the quality and professionalism is far from it, but then again of course most movies are. They must have been inspired by it. It is a nice and even sweet and fascinating story of a young girl/woman trying to find out what happened to her father. It is a nice sci fi movie from our neighbor Sweden. The story and acting is adequate except from the scenes with the police. Then it becomes very implausible and amateurish. I still give the movie a 7/10 because for me a 6 is "No, this is not worth watching". The sound is good in 5.1 without the music being dominant.

The truth is out there...
rebeckaflygare26 December 2022
This charming, fun and thrilling movie takes you right back to the 90;s (and a bit of the 80;s as well). For a lover of vintage you will find a lot of nice details, and for a lover of old school sci fi you will get the feels from those old Spielberg movies such as "Close encounters of the third kind".

The special effects are stunning, yet true to movies 30 years ago, and there were some nailbiting scenes were we, me and my 13 year old daughter, were leaning far in our chairs at the cinema.

The roles are perfectly casted, and the characters are diverse. I especially enjoyed Isabelle Kyed as "Töna" and Niklas Kvarnbo Jönsson as "Karl-Tefat" but I only have great words to say about the rest of the cast aswell.

This movie succeds were others fail by being absolutely genuine and down to earth (pun not intended) and I am very impressed by the small production company Crazy Pictures that continues to build a name for themselves with productions like this.

For lovers of sci fi and action this is a must see, but it's also filmed with that humor and warmth that takes it to another level.

Very good
marcusohman815 January 2023
Invokes a feeling of Wargames and Close encounters of the third kind. A throwback to 90's action adventure sci-fi movies, but in Sweden! A very charming film with a lot of heart and humour.

Plot revolves around a teenage girl looking for her father who might have dissapeared in an alien abduction in the 80's. She turns to her fathers old UFO Assosciation for help.

It is all done a bit tounge in cheek, for example the hacking is what you would expect from a movie made in the nineties and maybe not form a movie made in 2022. But it is in line with the charm and tone of the film.

Well acted, great soundtrack, and excellent cinematography and effects.

I higly recommend it!

The main character was horrible
centaureacyanus27 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was entertaining but mediocre. I would have given it more stars though if the main character Denise hadn't been so extremely unlikable. She was selfish and mean. She caused a car accident and just left a woman there to die among other things. Yet everyone forgave her all the time. Is it really impossible to create a strong young female character without making her a sociopath? After the first 30 minutes me and my friends were team Gunnar and just wished Denise would fail or at least have some consequenses to her actions. It was obvious though that the movie was on her side and it was frustrating.

Underrated movie!
tede114 August 2023
6.6 on Imdb does not make this movie justice!

This is a gem that deserves more attention, as it, contrary to many Swedish movies, has fun characters, it is well played/acted and manages to take you back to the 80ies and 90ies. Their attention to detail was great, with a lot of props and other things relating to actual 80ies and 90ies, action scenes were fantastic and special effects were tasteful and very well made.

I was very surprised how well the action scenes were made, with intense car chases and hard-to-make fast scenes - super cool to see in a budget Swedish movie.

It made me laugh and wanna see more!

Non-belivable "cop"
info-617518 April 2023
UFO Sweden is a charming film that unfortunately falls short due to its portrayal of the police. While the rest of the cast was strong, the police characters felt incredibly unrealistic and poorly acted. It was frustrating to see the inconsistencies in their actions and reactions, and it was clear that the filmmakers struggled with their portrayal. The film also suffered from a number of scenes featuring the police that were cut, which made it difficult to follow the plot at times. Despite these shortcomings, the film's other elements were well-executed, and it was clear that the filmmakers put a lot of effort into it. Overall, UFO Sweden is a decent film, but it would have benefited greatly from better handling of the police characters.

Best Swedish movie i can think of!
lindelagibson26 December 2022
I have been looking forward to see this movie for a long time now and i expected a decent feel good experience, but this was SO MUCH better than i expected! The whole storyline is amazing and you never feel bored watching it, you get hooked by the first minute! The actors are AMAZING, i can't think of a bad actor in the whole movie and the characters are likeable and feels like real people.

The soundtrack is also something that makes the movie so great, it always has a special feel to it and it makes every scene stand out with it's own personalized feeling. And the vfx are great, i've never seen a Swedish production with this good vfx!

All and all i can't think of a better Swedish movie than this, i absolutely love it and think everyone should take the time to see it!

Good artists lend, great steal, but,..
CeeYay14 April 2023
Do you want to see Interstellar, Stranger Things, with characters thought to be funny - but lesser developed than in the Police Academy? Then this is your movie.

  • A review by a swede, watched in the original language

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery - but this is at times just theft.

Now, I don't want to cut it down by the ankles straight up. There are good things worthy to be mentioned first. I do want to applaud the production company's, Crazy Pictures, wants to do something different here - in this country that otherwise doesn't want to stick out it's neck. UFO:s in Sweden is a nice idea for a movie, there are good actors in it (though highly flawed due to the lacking script), and the imagery is actually really nice at times. Soo nice that it actually triumphs the movie entirely - which is a bad thing. Music is at times nice too, although both of these things seems to lean heavily on, or to be near upright stolen (!) from Stranger Things, Interstellar and Hans Zimmer himself.

There are American ambitions with this movie. Intensity, quirky characters, action, but it all falls flat (besides it's copyright/originality issues) with the fact that borrowed parts of imagery, music, nice footage, doesn't make for a movie. There is a need for direction! (-Which by the way, why was there no director attached to this movie's end credits?) There's also a need for a script, plot, character development and developed characters to begin with. The basics. - You know, the flower in a cake.

Instead, Crazy Pictures seem to have aimed for the icing of the cake: the sugar, the decoration and the food colouring - making this look good, but have no real substance. Not until it's last 20-30 minutes or so does it get interesting and with some actual thought as to how it's all tied together (which is rather interesting and nicely done, I must say!). However, this one original idea that actually holds up needed to woven in much earlier. Instead of watching them write down forms - which is ludicrously boring even for a swede (!) - they could have opted to explore this precise core of the movie much earlier, instead of waiting with it until it's end.

With this said, it do lends up for a sequel. It has the potential to be developed further. But then it actually has to be Developed further. I'm not sure if this was their plans, but I hope they do take all the lessons they can from basic movie making, and implement it into their further works.

Because then, it could actually be rather good.

A Swedish interstellar
lukas-olofw13 January 2023
Now i know the title is a bit of a simplification and i generally think its bad to compare peoples work against eachother. But this is just a line i use to quickly describe the film to friends when i tell them about this movie.

I really liked it, i think its cool that a collective of guys from Norrköping filmed everything themselves. Produced it themselves, did all the editing ect.

Its uniqe that we get these types of movies in Sweden and and its a well made movie.

It was captivating, it had twists and turns so not totally predicable and going along a scripts most movies follow along. Would definetly recommend people to see this movie and im reccomending it to people i personally know.

Exited to see that Crazy Pictures comes up with in the future. Now im gonna watch their old movie.

The Unthinkable.

Complete garbage
tha_hawk2 June 2023
Crazy Pictures, the people behind The Unthinkable are back with another example of how little they actually care about the craft of fimmaking. UFO Sweden is the big budget equivalent of when those cool guys you knew in high school made action packed short films that everybody thought was awesome. In fact, that's probably how these guys started, but when they got older they never realized what actually makes a good movie. This is all about cinematography and special effects. Not once during this production did somebody care about creating believable characters, writing a good script or directing actors. Undeveloped, adolescent crap. Don't waste your time.

Amazing movie
Jolle_0336 January 2023
For me this was an amazing experience. I sent inte this movie expecting a fun family adventure. However I was very suprised with how really good and cleaver it acutally was. The acting and special effects where great but it was the story that really got me hooked especially the last part.

The last 20 minutes where just amazing and it took a really intresting turn that left me on the edge of my seat. The ending was brilliant and left me wanting möte.

One of the best movies of the year and I can not wait for what Crazy Pictures makes in the future.

10/10 a must see for sci-fi and action lovers.

Not interested to see this movie again
joakim589-117 July 2023
There isn't anything here that did captured me. The story is a bit vague. And some things in the movie goes so fast, like when the protagonist know exactly what is in a "computer box" just with a glance of it. There is some scenes with number and calculations in the movie, and we as an audience are never invited to try to find clues our self. But instead just suddenly a character just gives us a solution. The movie is said to be a sci-fi adventure, but the feel of it is that it is a comedy that is not funny. The actor Jesper Barkselius is the best thing here, hope I can see more of him. Also Inez Dahl Torhaug was good. Also the rest of the UFO Sweden team did act good. But I did have some expectations on this, the second movie from Crazy Pictures, after the quite good movie The Unthinkable. But UFO Sweden did not live up to expectations at all, and I don't think I will rewatch this movie ever again.

UFO Sweden
eliasnordfors25 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, what else is there to say. Crazy Pictures does it again.

UFO Sweden is already a classic. It is a must-see movie masterpiece. It combines both fantasy, action and sci-fi, all in one. The cast is amazing, extra cred to Inez and her amazing performance. A rising star with a bright future a head of her.

The rest of the cast is amazing too, nothing wrong there. Matter of fact, they all make UFO Sweden the brilliant movie it actually is.

Volvo, UFO's & good actors, what else is there to ask for?

Do yourself a favour, go to the cinema and watch it. You will not regret it!

Without a doubt a 10/10.

Kids movie?
lthoren30 January 2024
In best case it is a movie for kids during their Christmas vacation. Really stupid intrigue and amateur actors makesthis film boring. One of a dussin film makers makes this kind of movies spiced with 3D effects and mysterious lighting. It is produced in Sweden and the plot i really Swedish. A young person tries to find out what happened to her father long time ago. The local UFO office have strange individuals characterized in a very prejudiced way. Fat, nerd and so on. Not very polite. Is it a comedy, kids movie or satire? No one knows. Dont waste one and a half hour watching this crap. It will soon be forgotten. There are better.swedish movies and film makers.

Great Swedish Sci-Fi Film
carmelolia25 January 2024
My girlfriend loves anything to do with UFOs or Aliens so we like to watch a good sci-fi film every now and again. 'UFO Sweden' is a very good addition to this genre and is very well-made.

This was a sterling effort from the production team and from the actors and actresses. Make no mistake about it, 'UFO Sweden' is a great contribution to the relevancy of European cinema which often struggles with more limited budgets than our American counterparts in the film industry.

Undoubtedly one of the best Swedish and European sci-fi films ever released, do not miss out on 'UFO Sweden' if you love sci-fi.

Super charming movie

One of the best movies in Sweden's movie history. If you want a movie with feeling, humour, interesting characters, great and realistic special effects, awesome music and settings this is a movie for you!

The people at the small Swedish movie company Crazy Pictures is really making a name for themselves.

I love to be able to hear an small city accent I have heard and lived with my whole life is giving me a special feeling in my heart, an accent that is rarely heard in big movies.

Inez is fantastic in the lead role as Denise and I especially love the relationship between her and Jesper who plays Lennart.

Absolutely amazing!
marty1081081 April 2023
I must start off by stating the fact that I very rarely write reviews on here but this is just so damn good that I had to get this off my chest. During the last 40 years of my existence I've seen thousands upon thousands of movies and especially science fiction and fantasy ones.

My home country of Sweden is mostly known for Ingmar Bergman, hard hitting dramas, a relaxed attitude when it comes to nudity and nowadays the wave of Scandinavian Noir thrillers that is all the rage these days.

But action, adventure, horror and science fiction? Not exactly world leading, to be quite honest. Yes, there are some nifty exceptions but for the most part their curiosities at best, minor disasters at worst.

But then UFO Sweden comes along and it is just a thing of beauty! Without going into too much detail, this is the best Scandinavian film I have ever seen and it is up there with classics like Close Encounters of The Third Kind and Super 8.

Yes. It's that damn good. Everything on display here is top notch, from acting, script to special effects and editing.

I can not recommend this enough. 10/10.

Refreshing!
skypilot-3732318 April 2023
Finally, a movie that was worth watching this year... and it didn't come out of Hollywood. The pandemic must have put a real damper on movie production the past 3 years, because I haven't been able to find a movie that I can rate over a 5 out of 10, until now. I didn't invest much hope when I first sat down to watch this sci-fi gem, but was captivated all the way through. It has a sprinkle of Spielberg, mixed with a dash of Interstellar inspiration, but I did not mind, because the storyline was fresh, the acting good, and the emotions real. It contains a mix of serious realism and good-natured humour.

Just like Stranger Things!
mateusz-kaminski16 October 2023
Underestimated movie with good acting, excellent decoys and budget as for non-hollywood movie, strong stranger things/x-files vibe. Few x-files references could be spotted. Movie also didn't end where many movies could have ended, but story was told entirely. Movie was entertaining but also kept surprising you. There are some minor goofs and unreasonable character acting but that doesn't stop you from enjoying the movie! 90s presented quite accurately, I also live in the nordics. I truly don't know why rating average is so low, if you enjoy Stranger Things, you will also like this! High recommendation for any sci-fi fan out there!
