Another torture movie that felt different until the end. Acting and plot were decent. Ending was lame. I give it a C
cosmo_tiger6 January 2011
An uptight cooking show host and head restaurant chef (LeGros)loses his jobs and takes his revenge on the critic (Leonard)that caused his downfall. After a scathing review from food critic JT Franks causes chef Peter Grey to lose his job at his restaurant, and the cancellation of his show, Grey kidnaps Franks and the torture begins. It sounds pretty cheesy but Grey reads reviews Franks has given and forces him to do better in order to eat the food he is preparing. The movie is slow moving in parts but overall a pretty good movie to watch. I was going to give it a B- mainly because the torture movie genre is all the same, but the last 20 minutes strayed away from the aspects that made this seem different and into "really, they are doing this??!".The ending brought the grade down, it could have been so much better. I give it a C.

Right label

This is a tough sell. A movie where both hero and antagonist are despicable (but not in that cute animated movie you may know). Of course some might have trouble choosing who the protagonist is for them. But it doesn't matter who you choose, you will have a hard time rooting or really feeling for one of them.

Of course, the movie will wake up feelings in most of the viewers. Because we all have been mistreated in one way or another. And most would have wished to get back at those who don't respect them or the work they've done. This concept can be put on many other section of life or art. Even commenting on movies, you could go like: well do it better, if you can.

The actors do their best (with an interesting cameo by chameleon Larry Fassenden), but the story does not seem to know where it is heading or what it really wants to tell us (a "side" story being part of that and the alternate ending confirming, that the test audience might have been confused too). The basic idea is stronger than the end product, it still might satisfy you, if you like small budgeted movies

Really good thriller but ruined by horrible ending
sedativchunk8 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this movie, it was entertaining and worth a watch! A celebrity chef gone hell bent on torturing a guy who wrote many bad reviews on his finest cuisine. The story line is simple and the camera work in this movie was awesome!

The main characters were all great, the only person I wasn't crazy about was the private investigator who seemed weird and out of place in the movie. He looked like someone who went into a coma in the 80's and woke up 20 years later. Other than that everything was very suspenseful without being too over the top. But for what was an 8/10 movie for me quickly flopped near the end.

Before I go on, I say the movie IS worth a watch. I'm not a thriller fan at all but I actually watched this on TV because it was interesting. Below I explain the ending though and why I gave it a negative review. It contains spoilers so I recommend you watch and judge for yourself and unless you really don't care.

* SPOILERS BELOW * The ending in my opinion is pretty horrible which killed the movie for me. Near the end the food critics girlfriend gets kidnapped and taken hostage by the insane chef. The movie went downhill from there. First off when he kidnapped her there was the horror movie forced nudity, they just had to show the girl topless in the bathtub! Second he played a silly hunting game with the critic and ended up killing him in the end. The girlfriend breaks free and she ends up killing the insane chef. We don't know how she copes or survives because the credits kick in. I thought it was because they were trying to show things from the chef's perspective but that's not true, the story in the beginning went between both characters and into the girlfriends life a little. It just didn't work.

Why did I think this was a bad ending? The whole point of the movie was the chef wanted to bring pain and misery to the food critic for criticizing his food. When he kidnapped the girlfriend, I was expecting him to kill the girl right in front of him to make him upset and then I thought he would make him cook her or something sick like that. It would have tied into the story and showed how sick and twisted he was. Instead he just ties her up and plays a hunting game with the food critic. There were so many better ways to have done the ending, I just didn't like it.

As boring & dull as they come.
poolandrews7 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Bitter Feast starts as Peter Grey (James LeGros) the head chef at an up market restaurant called Feast is fired by his partner because of venomous & scathing internet reviews by influential food critic JT Franks (Joshua Leonard), soon after Grey's television cooking series is cancelled by TV bosses who are alarmed at the ratings slide. With his career & reputation in tatters Grey has also suffered great personal tragedy after having lost his son to cancer, having gone past breaking point Grey decides to take revenge on Franks. Grey kidnaps Franks & imprisons him in his country home far from the city & any means of help for Franks who is at Grey's mercy, Grey sets Franks various task's & if he fails the task he is punished. From frying the perfect egg to cooking the perfect steak, Grey taunts & tortures Franks but he has been missed & people are looking for him & Grey soon becomes the prime suspect...

Written & directed by Joe Maggio I have to say right away that Bitter Feast is the worst film I have seen in quite some time, I must admit that I have been taking a bit of a break from watching & commenting on so many films & Bitter Feast is a prime example of why I have lost a little bit of love with the genre lately. All I want from a film is for it to entertain me, to have some fun with it, for it to succeed at what it sets out to achieve & come away from it feeling good. Unlike when I watch a film like Bitter Feast which bores me to death, annoys me & has me constantly looking at the counter on my DVD player as I literally count down the seconds until it's finished. I hated Bitter Feast. Plain & simple. The script features nothing but unlikable character's, from the chef Grey to the critic Franks I just hoped everyone would die as soon as possible & put us all out of our misery, Grey has no plan or reason behind what he is doing as far as I could tell. Sure there's the revenge angle but if that's all he wanted why not just kill Franks & be done with it? Why the pointless games? Why make him try to fry an egg & then slap his face when he fails? The film never builds up to anything either, there'#s no great ending or anything & it just sort of fizzles out after a predictable chase & fight. Bitter Feast could have been a lot of fun with a snobbish critic getting his comeuppance in a grisly & fitting way as witnessed in the excellent Theater of Blood (1973) but it takes itself so seriously, is so drawn out & dull & uneventful that I found it really hard to get to the end, I did make it to the end but it more a test of endurance than a fun & entertaining way to pass 100 odd minutes.

Reasonably well made there's nothing wrong with the way Bitter Feast looks but it's pretty forgettable, there's not much tension or any scares as such. Forget about any gore as there isn't any really, a knife is stuck into someone's hand & a couple of people have blood spurting neck wounds but otherwise this is really tame.

Probably shot on a really low budget this was filmed in New York. The acting is alright but many of the performance's are far too one dimensional & flat. I can't say i cared about anyone or anyone creeped me out or made me laugh or anything really.

Bitter Feast is a film that I really disliked & it's films just like Bitter Feast why I just don't watch as many low budget horrors as I used to, I just find them an annoying & frustrating & boring waste of time. Bitter Feast is a film I happily will never have to watch again & be thankful for it.

Refreshing horror movie
scoup6 June 2012
It's nice to see a horror movie that is not a hollowed out skeleton of mass produced clichés; and how many can boast Mario Batali as a cast member (I'm not saying he was awesome).

James LeGros had his acting mojo going on many years ago. If he was in it then I was fairly confident that I would like the movie or could at the very least depend on a good performance from him. Somewhere along, he seemed to have hit a rough patch and each movie was a crap shoot.

I am happy to say that he is back. I had a warm fuzzy feeling in a cold bloody horror movie.

Bitter Feast is more psychological than the average horror flick, but it has nice undercurrents and satirical commentary on society today.

It's a good day when you turn off the movie and wonder if you can find another one just like it...not perfection, but very satisfying.

Boring, Slow, Predictable, Tiresome, Lame, Dull, Waste of Time
TrukDrivr4 January 2011
I have no idea how anyone could possibly say anything good about this crap movie. I'm a B movie fan and not even I could stand this yawn-fest. Totally predictable and you knew what was going to happen 10 minutes into the movie. You just had to sit, *yawn* and try to stay awake for the next hour or so until it came about. No surprises here. Same old, same old, except with nothing to keep you awake or keep you from shutting it off and completely forgetting it. There Is Nothing Even Mildly Interesting About This Lame movie. The dialog is dull and predictable. It drags on so slowly, for so long, and the characters are so idiotic and shallow that you don't care who lives, who dies or what happens to them along the way. You just want them to all s.t.f.u and die already, so this slow, boring movie can be over with!

"Bitter Feast" is one of those waste-of-your-time movies that deserves a negative star rating.

Dig in!
mattressman_pdl29 August 2011
Peter Grey is a pompous, talented chef whose life is about to take a turn for the worse after an unnecessarily horrible review by blogger JT Franks. Grey's already skewed world perspective changes drastically as he resolves to kidnap Franks, torturing him with a series of seemingly simple cooking tasks.

Bitter Feast gets points for originality and gloss. The film looks quite good for an independent effort and the actors really throw themselves into the roles. They actually hired actors, not faces, to flesh out the interesting script. James Le Gros especially never goes over the top but plays the role rather subtly and Josh Lucas is excellent, being sympathetic and unsympathetic all at once. The always reliable Larry Fessenden shows up as a slimy private eye trying to locate Franks.

Don't expect your life to change, but if you're looking for a movie with some originality and panache, then dig in!

Horrible waste of time.
slatromhsiloof12 February 2011
Far less entertaining than reading Mexican graffiti on the wall of the bathroom stall, and take into consideration that I can't read Mexican. Whoever funded this trash should have spent his $20 better and bought a pizza instead. At least a pizza would have brought pleasure to 3-4 people, something this movie will not do in a lifetime, no matter how many fake reviews the cast and crew pile up on IMDb trying to get some poor sap to pay to watch this garbage. I couldn't even make it through half the movie it was so bad, and I'll watch Hogan's Heroes re-runs. It was so bad it put my dog into a coma and I had to have him put to sleep. The only thing this movie has going for it is it is so unmemorable that they can rename it in a few months and re market it as a Michael Moore documentary. Yes, its THAT bad. I blame the director, the producer, the actors and the writers for the poor quality of the film. They should all go back to working at Burger King and leave the film making to the professionals. Yes, I am being overly kind. Usually I would call for them to be flayed alive to keep anyone else from being inflicted by their horrendous garbage, but my brain has not yet recovered from the damage this film has done to it. I only wish I had huffed paint instead of watching this movie as I would have killed far fewer brain cells.

Bitter Feast (2010)
SashaDarko21 January 2018
Unlike some other capture/torture movies which focus more on torture than anything else (like an extremely overrated The Loved Ones), this one is mostly about revenge and capturer making a point. In this case one pretentious rich asshole proving another asshole what he doesn't deserve to call himself a restaraunt critic. Practically all characters in the movie are assholes except the critic's wife, so you just wish both of male leads just kill each other in some assholish 1-vs-1 standout.

It's a decent thriller with the actual story and it's interesting enough to watch it at least once. The ending is not believable, but made so for the quite ironic scene.

Words may actually end up hurting you.
michaelRokeefe17 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Joe Maggio directs this wickedly and somewhat comical story of torture. Peter Gray(James LeGros)is an arrogant, self-absorbed celebrity chef that has had one bad review too many. A pompous influential food blogger JT Franks(Joshua Leonard)writes another scathing review of Gray's show and cooking abilities. Gray finally snaps and his hatred of Franks becomes obsessive. In a way, JT's words will come back to hurt him. The TV chef kidnaps the blogger and shackles him in the basement. On the menu is a full course of witty tortures. But alas, the beaten up JT is far from being helpless. Next up is a tactful battle of gigantic egos. Rounding out the cast: Amy Seimetz, Megan Hilty and Food Network's Mario Betali.

An excellent thriller/horror/revenge movie!
krachtm4 January 2011
Apparently, this movie is low budget, but I couldn't tell. I wish I could say that about every independent movie I see! The other reviews are spot on: this is a very good movie, with a tasteful, somewhat fresh spin on the revenge movie, bucking the recent trend of gross-out, "torture porn" films. There's no actual torture in this movie, though it's implied and almost certainly is happening, off-camera. Some might be disappointed by this. Myself, I find it somewhat refreshing to watch a revenge movie that focuses more on psychological horror, story, and pacing, rather than buckets of fake blood. Don't get me wrong; I like buckets of fake blood as much as the next guy (I liked the first Saw movie, for instance), but much of that genre is based on titillating people who get off on graphic displays of violence, frequently with a strong misogynist subtext. I'm glad that the genre horror has more life to it than that.

Everything in this movie was quite good, though I might have tweaked the story here and there, to highlight certain themes a little stronger and to give a little more time to the very interesting conflict between the two leads. Overall, though, I liked it quite a lot, and I recommend it to anyone who likes darker dramas, revenge movies, and/or independent cinema. There's so much to like here, that you'll easily overlook any flaws.

Run away...just run away
dctr66616 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is lame...sooooo lame... The story, even though a bit original, is boring. A chef, that gets angry at a bloguer, for saying bad things about his program, and about his restaurant, kidnaps and tortures him, really bad, in order to make him suffer some regret for the "bad deeds" he has done. Stupid story, stupid actors, with stupid role play... The only good part in this film, is the death of the detective, that the bloguer's wife hired to search for him... Unfortunately this kind of crap is more and more normal, nowadays... Stay away...if you want to see torture movies, try Last House on the Left or I spit on your grave...both versions (72 and the modern one). This one is forgetful...a waste of time...

Only Sadism On The Menu
Boptrax6 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The chef takes issue with a bad review which the script writer wants us to believe ends his TV cooking career. I knew this was a revenge movie but thought, perhaps, that said revenge might have a subtler, more intellectual edge than simply abducting the offending food critic and chaining him up in the cellar to subject him to a series of arbitrary culinary tests based on a few of his previously dismissive reviews. But, no....this movie only has sadism on the menu. If the captive critic fails the test, he doesn't eat, doesn't drink and is subject to physical abuse. The flashback beginning of the film, when we see the chef as a child murdering his older brother in the woods, telegraphs the ludicrous ending. On the plus side, a handful of actors were gainfully employed for a time, but once they did their jobs and were paid, there was little excuse for inflicting this film on an unwary fast food acclimated public.

Better than expected
richardcostantino20 July 2021
This movie reminded me of Vincent Price's 'Theatre Of Blood', only not as fun.

This movie is well acted, and has a very dark sense of humour. It could have been an excellent movie, if only the back-stories of the main characters were a little less hackneyed.

Damn Good
chicagopoetry2 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This one ranks up there with Primer in that it demonstrates that a film can be powerful on script, acting and directing alone, without a ton of money to spoil it with boring special effects. This one is an original twist on the slasher slash torture porn industry delivering a somewhat mild but intriguing version about a famous cook taking revenge upon the critic who ruined his career. I would have liked to see some more original spins here and there, like the victim actually cooking a steak to perfection as challenged, for example, which would have made this tale of demented revenge much more believable, but whatever: it kept me alert for nearly two hours which is more than I can say about most Hollywood blockbusters, so I say spend your couple of bucks to rent it and enjoy.

Bitter Feast - Compelling, entertaining
winickj1 January 2011
I have seen one of Joe Maggio's previous films, Virgil Bliss, and his style of story telling appealed to be then as it does now.

Hollywood spends millions, yet Mr. Maggio can put a film together for $6,000 apparently. Wonder what they really spend the money on.

James LeGros is excellent, supported by a strong script and a good story. I liked this from the beginning until almost the end (don't want to spoil it).

Lots of interesting dialog and James LeGros' cool intensity won me over.

I don't like a lot of movies, but I certainly like this one.

An 8, only for the budget
pahaake3 January 2012
First, I am a huge fan on Kitchen Nightmares, Hell's Kitchen, etc. I also consider myself quite the food snob. I love to cook, but would never, ever, consider doing it as a career.

All of that said, this movie is extremely clever. Not terribly original from a revenge and torture perspective, but I love the "challenges".

The low budget nature of the film makes it unlikely to ever get a major viewing; however, anyone that is a fan of food and Gordon Ramsey will truly enjoy this film.

Final thought, for a cost conscious film, the acting is actually quite good.

Well done.
NicoNc16 October 2012
I dislike "blood and guts" movies, and only saw this one because I was channel surfing, thought it was about a guy and his cooking show, and was drawn in by the time I realized its genre.

For a low budget movie, I'm surprised at how good the lead actors were, and that even though both characters were impossible to like, they had strong chemistry together and there was palpable suspense over what would happen next.

Surprisingly, the dialog was well-written, and there was some very dark comedy in there. The tasks that the captor demanded were not complicated nor incredible, but rather simply creative ways to make the critic "eat his words." Some of the negative reviews in here lament that there was not enough blood and/or guts/gore, but there was enough intensity and thrills created, without having to show every bloody detail.

I found this to be a suspenseful, well-acted independent film.

Original Suspense and Horror!
rchoyle28 July 2012
The only reason I didn't give this film a 10 out of 10 is because that is saved for a movie I haven't seen yet! With that being said, Bitter Feast is a masterpiece original in suspense and horror. Starts off good enough as it draws you in with the urge to want to see where this movie is taking you. A very original story line as we've all seen hundreds of movies of this genre that are simply produced from a cookie cutter and quite predictable! This film is nothing like that and without going into detail about scenes I liked more than others, their was one aspect to the movie that really made it great to watch and that was the music of the movie especially the sound of the "drum" beating periodically thought out the movie as although it was more of just a sound effect, to me it was what really pushed the movie over the top and obtain the high rating I felt it deserved. Great beginning, middle and ending!! Three very important components for a movie to be successful.

gr8 revenge movie
jeffans22 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
If you like movies about revenge, then this is THE movie for you. James Legros plays Peter Grey, a famous successful reality chef whose career is destroyed by Franks, an online restaurant critic. Grey captures Franks and sort of makes him see what its like to be a chef and have every little thing get criticized only with severe punishment. The ending was fairly predictable. I highly recommend watching this and no, I am in no way affiliated with the production or making of this movie or any of its cast. I liked the cast and didn't care that it was a low budget movie. Certainly the best "revenge" movie I can think of. Similar in some ways to "misery".

Got Served a Bitter Feast Disappointment Par Excellence
Average_Armchair_Critic17 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Why am I even here expressing my opinion on this movie as it is as pointless as watching this movie? The movie left a blank trail in my mind, absolutely not moved with me at all. That particular feeling about the overall atmosphere of the movie reflects my score not the fact whether I liked the movie or not. I liked certain aspects of the movie (the psychological aspect) while simultaneously hating the other (the premise which was plain simple dull). It's just the amount of things from the latter category was *slightly* higher.

I tried not to take the movie seriously, just switch off my brains and let it take me to an eighty minutes journey but instead it just took me to the woods and that's pretty much it. I hate the woods. It's like if the producers intended this movie to be an anti-organic food propaganda that will make you hate anything organic because the movie probably makes you associate it with an arrogant psychopath with unresolved issues from childhood, or that's what they believe. The cook wasn't one, you know, but the storyline pretty much turned him into one. I guess the director didn't really have a clue how to conclude the movie leaving you (and the director) pretty much confused. But what did I expect, Hollywood blockbuster type of three dimensional story? Michael Bay? The movie promised a bitter feast and I (expletive) got my bitter cold feast so maybe I should give it ten stars instead. As you see ratings are very arbitrary and relative.

I would go even further to expand on the variety of topic this movie points at, like all media-approved and supported society faults, consumerism and all the like blah blah, all of it to justify "snap outs" but all aforementioned examples were presented in a very shallow manner and don't mean a thing.

(SPOILER) WHY even make JT Franks' wife a victim when she had nothing to do with that? Why that scene with her taking a bath trying to make a suspension out of nothing make it look like some kind of horror when the scene did not fit the movie's pace at all? Completely pointless scenes just for the sake of the genre only. That's not how I like my movies. (/SPOILER)

The power of internet 2.0 is way too strong to be extinguished which would reflect the humorous side of the movie basically telling that everyone is and can be JT Franks when they write a displeasing comment and some people 1,000 miles away get upset to the point of desiring to murder you. Is that the green light for you to make a movie? A short story on paper yes, movie? Don't do that.

I am amused at the glimpse of thought of producers of this movie going on a killing spree targeting everyone on the internet who gave this movie a bad review (Daniel Rodrigues, Paul Andrews, Boptrax, TrukDrivr, slatromhsiloof I'm looking your way). Now THAT should be the sequel about.
