Miss the Bat
I've just ploughed through to the end of the gruelling 18 or was it 19 episode second series of "Batwoman" and I must admit I found it really heavy going.
I was aware of course of the furore surrounding Ruby Rose's sudden departure after series one as well as the fallout from her accusations against co-star Dougray Scott. Still, against my better judgement, I persisted with the show all the way although I really don't think I have the inclination to go back for series three.
I just couldn't get round the preposterous not to say disrespectful way the writers tried to get round the loss of Rose, teasing out the is-she-alive-or-isn't-she question and then conning the audience with an evil near-lookalike popping up at the end.
As for her replacement as Batwoman, I shouldn't have been surprised that version 2.0 is also from the LBGT community and of course is black too. I get that the producers are trying to promote diversity but sometimes it can seem a bit obvious. I'm sorry too but I thought the new look of Batwoman with her curls cascading out of her cowl looked silly and was it just me thinking that the new actress in the part didn't really seem up to the physical demands of the part. Her running, jumping and fighting scenes just looked very staged and almost cumbersome to me.
Unfortunately, the show-runners also seem to want to maintain Alice as the Joker of the piece, but for me, this character's emotional and psychological flip-flopping almost every episode grew very irritating and tiresome after a very short while. None of the other super-villains, from False Face to Black Mask worked either while all that mystical, fantastical stuff involving Ocean, Circe and Safiya was just so much fluff and nonsense.
I really was relieved to get to the end of this slow-freezing series and it pains me to say that I found it to be one that really tried my support of the DC television comic-verse. All I saw really was slack writing, rote acting and unimaginative direction and by retaining much of the same cast of characters for the third series I think this is one bat-signal I'll be ignoring from now on.
