"Batman: Caped Crusader" was developed by "Batman: The Animated Series" co-creator Bruce Timm, with veteran Batman comic scribes like Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka in the writers' room. Despite its familiar creative staff, "Caped Crusade" wound up making plenty of changes to Gotham City.
Take the villain of the first episode: the Penguin — but not as we usually know him. The "Batman: Caped Crusader" Penguin is gender-swapped from Oswald Cobblepot to Oswalda (Minnie Driver). She's got the trademark umbrella and beak-y nose, but Oswalda is neither the gentleman super-villain like most past Penguins, the repellent weirdo as played by Danny DeVito in "Batman Returns," or the waddling criminal upstart currently played by a costumed Colin Farrell in HBO's "The Penguin." The "Caped Crusader" Penguin is like an upper-crust Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale), the Kentucky mob boss villain of "Justified" season...

While director Matt Reeves was developing “The Batman,” his epic superhero movie starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, he ran into a problem — he had too much story.
At the time, the filmmaker asked Warner Bros. if perhaps they would instead want a miniseries. “What could be really cool is an HBO series – ‘Batman: Year Two,’ solving this crime,” Reeves remembered telling his executives. What he was told in response was, “We have nothing to do with HBO.”
But as Reeves was finishing the script for “The Batman” and gearing up for production, he met with Wbd and said, “Look, I know these things are connected, but it’d be really exciting to do an HBO show where you can investigate these characters in a way that HBO would,” Reeves recalled to TheWrap. “And they were like, ‘We want to do exactly that.’ And suddenly there was this moment...

If you're a fan of DC Comics, the past few years have probably been pretty tough for you. A merger at Warner Bros. led to the cancellation of a slew of movies and TV shows set within their cinematic universe, and new owners at The CW also resulted in the cancellations of multiple DC TV shows that had been dominating the network for the past decade.
Yeah, it's been rough out here for DC fans. The good news is that a new DC Universe is coming from Peter Safran and James Gunn, but it's going to take some time before it comes to fruition (animated series Creature Commandos is debuting in December and Gunn's own Superman movie doesn't come out until next year). That means there will still be a prolonged period of time without much DC TV content on our screens - unthinkable this time just three years ago.

Yesterday evening, we learned that DC Studios is moving forward with Dynamic Duo, a movie revolving around Robins Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
The belief right now is that the animated project will be set in the Dcu, presumably fleshing out the history between these characters before we catch up with them in the present day as Nightwing and Red Hood. Well, that's the hope, anyway.
The news has received positive and negative reactions from fans but the involvement of Swaybox Studios is undeniably intriguing. The company uses an innovative "Momo animation" that blends CGI, practical stop-motion elements, and live-action performances to create a new style of animation that's vastly different from what we're used to seeing on screen.
While we don't know exactly what Dynamic Duo will look like, some Swaybox test reels offer a glimpse at what the studio might be planning for the DC project.

Matt Reeves has been taking time out from The Penguin and The Batman – Part II to chat about Batman: Caped Crusader and its future.
Part of Warner Bros’ ongoing, multi-year fire sale saw the studio sell off an animated show featuring one of its ‘crown jewels’, the noir-styled Batman: Caped Crusader, a series that combined the DNA of the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series with a take on the character that drew from his earliest appearances in Detective Comics.
Amazon Studios picked up the show and on release, it garnered some very good reviews. Bruce Timm, the architect of Batman: The Animated Series’ success is part of the creative team, as are JJ Abrams, James Tucker and Ed Brubaker.
That’s quite an assembly of talent, also bolstered by Matt Reeves, the current director of live action Batman films.

The late legendary Kevin Conroy was famous for his immaculate stage performances, TV series, and films, but his most iconic role will forever rank as Batman in the DC Universe. To say the least, thanks to the long decades he perfectly voiced the superhero, his name is now used synonymously with the character in the mediums of animation and video games, among others.

Of course, playing the Caped Crusader for so long eventually etched him in fans’ hearts in the role, but it didn’t stop them from wondering which other superhero Conroy could bring to life with his outstandingly magnificent voicing skills. And his response to this question was exemplary enough to prove why fans from all around the globe love him so much.

DC’s Elseworlds always have had some of the most interesting takes on their most popular superheroes. In recent times, one of the most interesting iterations of the DC universe has been depicted in Dark Knights of Steel, which depicts a medieval setting, with all of DC’s most popular characters.

While James Gunn has already announced that his Dcu will embody the qualities of Game of Thrones in stories like Paradise Lost, Dark Knights of Steel could totally be a part of the DC Multiverse, completely deserving of an adaptation on the big screen. Further, there is already a director on hand who can make it work flawlessly, given the nature of the story and the experience that he has.

Anime and superheroes are a match made in heaven, with the medium's penchant for imagination and allowing impossible feats of strength fitting perfectly with the superhero genre and its escalation of powers and world-ending stakes. Whether it's actual superhero anime like "My Hero Academia" and "One Punch Man" or shonen anime with incredible powers like "Dragon Ball Z," the two are a match made in heaven.
In recent years we've seen collaborations between western studios and anime studios, resulting in shows like "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" and "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," which blend western stories and sensibilities with anime visuals. Then there are shows like "My Adventures With Superman," which not only takes visual cues from anime, but also use anime tropes to tell a different kind of DC story. This is all...

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 has finally arrived, and we couldn't be more excited! The intricate fantasy series and franchise overall have built such an expansive world, and it's fun to see it all come to life in a new way with this prequel series.
The first three episodes are now streaming, and going forward one new installment will be released weekly. I'm sure we're in for a wild ride! I mean, this trio definitely got things moving right away. There's no argument that Rings of Power is one of the best shows streaming on Prime Video right now. And there's a bunch of others that join it. And, well, some that aren't worth your time.
There's the obvious shows that really are good, but you'll find on every list like this. Those include The Boys, Fallout, The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Wheel of Time,...

DC's latest version of Harley Quinn isn't attached to any man, including the Joker, in Batman: Caped Crusader.
All 10 episodes of the new Amazon Prime Video animated series dropped on August 1. It tells a retro story of Bruce Wayne and Batman taking on a new villain each episode with several overarching narratives.
One of the most noteworthy characters is Dr. Harleen Quinzel, who is later seen as the one and only Harley Quinn. In an exciting twist from past lore, Dr. Quinzel works as Bruce's psychiatrist and is presented initially as a thoughtful character who cares about his mental health while also understanding that he's hiding something.

“I think it’s a really fun era,” Minnie Driver told IndieWire of her career. “This is my chaos era. This is great!”
Driver has been popping up in delectable supporting roles for the last few years, from the hard-as-nails agent on “Starstruck” to the CIA director in Jason Statham action flick “The Beekeeper” and the Penguin on this summer’s animated “Batman: Caped Crusader.” But nowhere does she sow more chaos than as Elizabeth I on Season 2 od Starz’ “The Serpent Queen,” where she offers a dazzling new spin on film’s favorite Tudor.
Equal parts Alexis Carrington and Patsy Stone, Driver’s Elizabeth is flirty, flinty, and all-together formidable — even as those she encounters underestimate her at face value. Always a fatal mistake, and for many in the second season of the Samantha Morton-starring show about Catherine de Medici, literally so.

The tenure of J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot at Warner Bros. Television is expected to cross the 20-year mark. The company is in advanced negotiations with Warner Bros. to re-up its film and TV deal with the studio, sources tell Deadline.
The pending multi-year extension comes more than two years after Bad Robot’s current massive five-year pact experienced serious turbulence at the half point following the April 2022 close of the Warner. Bros.-Discovery merger when it was among a number of big-ticket items scrutinized by the new regime. At that time, HBO pulled the plug on Abrams’ sci-fi drama Demimonde before production was slated to start on the ambitious — and expensive — series.
The rough post-merger period included a handful of other greenlighted Bad Robot series not going forward at Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max, including The Shining offshoot series Overlook and the animated Batman: Caped Crusader.

Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s collaboration on The Batman (2022) resulted in a film that would go on to become one of the best in the Batman franchise – from cinematography to acting, everything was pitch perfect. And while the Batman veteran may be a fan of the film, he still believes that live-action has nothing on animation.

After the success of Batman: Caped Crusader's first season, the second season is sure to be just as solid. While the scene at the conclusion of the season finale sets up a major villain for the second season, Batman will likely be meeting a number of other new characters.
The world of Batman: Caped Crusader is based in the 1940s and could bring in some very interesting takes of classic DC characters. Season 1 brought us some interesting takes on characters such as Harley Quinn, Clayface, The Penguin and Two-Face, making some key changes to many that enhanced the story a great deal.
A number of villains and heroes should make an appearance in season 2 as Batman's vigilante career develops and he takes on Rupert Thorne's empire. There are some characters that would benefit from the 1940s world and others that could get new and exciting takes based on the aesthetic of the series.

The new Batman animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader” premiered its first season on Amazon Prime Video, introducing a departure from the source material. The show’s creative leads decided to make one of Batman’s most recognizable foes, The Penguin, into a woman named Oswalda Cobblepot.
Showrunner Bruce Timm said there was a “lack of good female villains” in Batman. With characters like Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn, another option was needed. This led producers to flip The Penguin’s gender. Co-creator James Tucker said the idea sparked new story directions, comparing Oswalda to iconic actress Marlene Dietrich.
Oswalda maintains traits of the classic Penguin character. She uses a weaponized umbrella and favors formal wear inspired by Dietrich’s stage outfits, according to actress Minnie Driver. However, Oswalda also has a family dynamic not seen before with two sons. She leads a criminal empire in 1940s Gotham, willing to...

Bruce Timm and James Tucker sat down with The Television Academy to talk about their new hit series, Batman: Caped Crusader. The show takes a fresh spin on The Dark Knight but puts him in a 1940s noir environment, where the character must rely on his skills as a detective, rather than relying on the gadgets that he has come to be associated with in modern times.

Exclusive: Prime Video is blending video games and animation for one its biggest bets in the adult-animated space to date. According to sources, the streamer has teamed with Tim Miller and his Blur Studio, the creative team behind Netflix’s acclaimed series Love, Death & Robots, for another adult-animated anthology, Secret Level.
Like Love, Death & Robots, whose episodes are based on short stories, video game anthology Secret Level, created and executive produced by Miller, consists of original short stories which are set within the worlds of beloved video games, I hear. Details are scarce but Amazon Games’ New World, Spelunky and PlayStation titles are rumored to be among the games and IP featured on the series, which is expected to be unvealed soon, likely during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. Batman: Caped Crusader is receiving a lot of praise for the fresh take that it has taken on Batman’s mythology. The 1940’s setting of the show takes the Dark Knight back to his roots, but also brings his modern mythology with it.

Set in the 1940s with an unabashedly noir vibe, the recently released show delved into the fan-favorite story of Bruce Wayne’s one-man mission as Batman to serve justice in Gotham City by eradicating crime.

Bruce Timm’s work and influence on Batman is truly legendary. His contributions have brought forth some of the most iconic animated portrayals of the Dark Knight. But among these, Batman: The Animated Series definitely stands the tallest. The show not only redefined Batman but also set a new benchmark for animated storytelling for generations to come.

With initial skepticism, Timm jumped into filmmaking again with Batman: Caped Crusader. But he also changed one specific aspect of the show, which is in complete contrast to what he had presented in Batman: The Animated Series.
Will Batman: Caped Crusader live up to the unparalleled legacy of its predecessor, or would it be just another show in a plethora of Batman adaptations?

Just when you thought you were done getting excited for Batman projects in an oversaturated market, who should come strolling along but "Batman: The Animated Series" co-creator Bruce Timm? The DC animation legend's "Batman: Caped Crusader" might very well be "the best piece of Batman media in a decade," to quote Witney Seibold's glowing review for /Film. It's certainly a worthy successor to "The Animated Series." Where that beloved '90s cartoon was limited by the censors at Fox Kids, Timm's latest animated take on the Dark Knight -- which nearly died on the vine after it was dropped by Max, only for Prime Video to pick it up -- is given the space to be as emotionally mature, political, and even frightening as it wants to be.

Bruce Timm, along with his team that worked on the Dcau, was responsible for the creation of some of the most iconic characters in modern superhero fiction. Be it Harley Quinn, Renee Montoya, Terry McGinnis, or Mercy Graves, the long-time animation creative has injected some fresh perspectives in some of DC’s classic mythologies, like that of Superman and Batman.

All episodes of the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader have been released. The project has already been renewed for a second season – and rightly so.
Of all the comic book characters, Batman is perhaps the most frequent guest on the big and small screen. Fans can argue about which films about Batman are better, Tim Burton's or Christopher Nolan's.
But there seems to be one immutable truth: everyone who loves the Dark Knight simply adores Bruce Timm's 1992 animated series Batman – a noir that gave fans the voices of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill and the first appearance of Harley Quinn.
And Bruce Timm is back with a new Batman animated series. This is not a sequel to the classics – although Warner Bros. offered him such a project several years ago, and right now X-Men '97 proves that viewers want sequels to the animated series of their childhood.

Batman: Caped Crusader recently premiered to widespread acclaim and has quickly surpassed The Boys in streaming popularity on Amazon.
Fans have largely embraced the show. However, leading up to its release, the show faced several controversies that some fans labeled as “woke.” These included a race-swapped Harley Quinn, who is portrayed as Asian, and a gender-swapped Penguin.
The show’s creators, Bruce Timm and James Tucker, recently discussed the show’s development with ‘The Emmys.’ One of the standout topics was the decision to gender-swap the Penguin. The creators explained that this choice was largely driven by the need for more compelling female villains.
Timm: James and I were talking about the overview of the show, and we said, “One of the problems with Batman, as he is, is there’s a lack of good villains. You’ve got Catwoman, you’ve got Poison Ivy, you’ve got Harley Quinn.

Prepare for a radical shift in Gotham’s dark narrative. Batman: Caped Crusader is shaking up Harvey Dent’s story in a way that makes Christopher Nolan’s take seem like child’s play. This revamped arc is taking Dent’s transformation into Two-Face to a whole new level, pushing boundaries and reimagining his villainous descent. While Nolan’s version offered a gripping portrayal, the new series is cranking up the intensity, weaving a darker and more complex narrative.

Bruce Timm’s new ten-episode series, Batman: Caped Crusader, has been receiving positive reviews. The series almost reminds fans of Batman: The Animated Series, but is set in a different period with uniquely different characters. Timm had no plans to revisit the series based on the Dark Knight and was discussing a different plan with his bosses.

However, his co-executive producer on Caped Crusader and long-time Batman creator James Tucker wanted to explore a show similar to Btas. Tucker was ultimately able to convince Timm to make a Batman animated series, citing one reason that piqued Timm’s interest.

Bringing the character of Batman back to his comic book origin roots is a trippy intellectual exercise because the character is always so high-tech. Ultra-wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne only acquires the very best tools to support his vocation of dressing up in a mask and cape and serving justice to the criminals of Gotham City. No matter what era he’s in, Batman still needs to operate that way.
So Bruce Timm’s new animated series, “Batman: Caped Crusader,” needs to behave like a period throwback and yet have enough flourishes that its Batman (Hamish Linklater) is still recognizably Batman. Of course, this has implications for the style of animation, character design, and plotlines written by comics vet Ed Brubaker, but it gets really interesting when it comes to the series’ sound design.

Bruce Timm, creator of the beloved and influential “Batman: The Animated Series,” re-teams with Warner Bros. Animation for the highly-anticipated “Batman: Caped Crusader.” Dropping on Prime Video, the noir-inspired series offers a fresh take on the Dark Knight with top voice talent like Minnie Driver transforming classic villains in surprising ways.
Timm, who first helped define the Dark Knight for a generation with his Emmy-winning 1992 series, was initially hesitant to revisit the character. “We’d been there, we’d done that. I wasn’t interested in just revisiting that world,” Timm told The Wrap. However, the opportunity to develop a wholly new vision for the Caped Crusader eventually drew him back to Gotham City.
Driver landed the standout role of fan-favorite villain The Penguin, though with a gender-bending twist. Now going by Oswalda Cobblepot, Driver promised Comic-Con fans that while the character is redesigned, her essence remains intact. “She skims...

Season 1 of "Batman: Caped Crusader" is officially here, and the verdict? It's pretty good! (Read /Film's glowing "Caped Crusader" review here.) It is not a sequel to "Batman: The Animated Series" in the same way this year's "X-Men '97" was to the original "X-Men" cartoon. However, "Caped Crusader" feels like a stylistic continuation of that show.
Bruce Timm, co-creator of "Batman: The Animated Series," developed "Caped Crusader" and both shows bear his distinctive art style. Classic series writers Paul Dini and Alan Burnett aren't involved, but the "Caped Crusader" writers' room does include, among others, veteran comic writers Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka.
I think the visuals of "Caped Crusader" aren't on par with "Batman: The Animated Series", but it's certainly got the right mood. Like Timm's previous "Batman" show, "Caped Crusader" focuses on Noir/Gothic stories and grounds Batman in the early 20th century. The character was created...
