She Can't "Komi"-nicate
RaymanHortse13 October 2021
Like in the Amphibia review, i am sorry about that, but i like to do creative titles for my reviews, even if they hurt.

Ok, this anime were announced in early summer if i can recall with a small teaser trailer and i got stunned by the animation, but i couldn' wait so i readed the manga first and now that it finally aired i can say that this is a very good adaptation. The light, the shadow, the voices we reach to hear... everything fits with the scene and the ambiance they give. They also have a detailed animation for characters that easily change to the less detailed one for comic situations; which are the main point alongside the basic story.

There's nothing bad about this, i didn't gave it a 10 stars because we just have 1 episode at time of publishing this review, if they manage to do it well on the total amount of episodes we'll get then i'll give the deserved 10, but until then it will be 9 and won't go down from that.

Komi is here to make friends, stay with her in the anime to see if she manages to reach her goal and the many things that will happen. A must watch, that's for sure.

Cute and relatable
keikoyoshikawa21 November 2021
Everyone has challenges to overcome. No one is perfect - not even the most beautiful girl at school. That's one message of this excellent anime on the topic.

The other is that social anxiety is real problem for some people, and can be quite debilitating. Taijin kyofusho (social phobia) is not limited to just Japan, but perhaps it's more studied here.

So far I'm liking the anime, and perhaps making it humorous instead of being too serious about the subject is the right way to go.

The Art of Communicating
robinsonaustin-0749011 November 2021
: Really, what is there to say about Komi Can't Communicate? This is probably up there as being one of the best anime adaptations this year with each episode really improving over each one.

The animation is simply beautiful and polished. The lighting and fluid movements are also top-notch. But I especially love the character designs of each character so much so, it would be relatively easy for each character to be identified with a silhouette.

But the main story is also really relatable: the social awkwardness and the desire to want to speak with other people but there are things that inhibit that such as shyness. But, really, you do want friends, and yet, how will you even hope to relay that?

The characters are what really give the show life. Tadano is described as "hopelessly average," which is true. When you have a whole school of students with different quirks and personalities, Tadano feels rather "vanilla." And yet, I feel that it works out just fine. Really, because of how much the students at the school treat Komi as a goddess or put her on a high pedestal, their flaws come from being unable to interpret Komi's true feelings in part because of their outrageous quirks. They are in love with the idea that Komi represents, and yet ironically, they are so woefully ignorant of what she is really like.

So despite that, Tadano is able to look past Komi's beauty to see someone that truly wanted friendship and he voluntarily assists her in her goal to get 100 friends. He does this again not because he is trying to score with her, but it is because he understands her. He also congratulates her whenever she would try to step out of her comfort zone.

For what little words she actually does speak, Komi is adorable with the show doing a great job at adapting her "bug eyes." The main humor comes from the classmates misunderstanding her behavior or actions by filling in the blanks when she actually had something else completely different in mind. Her goal of wanting 100 friends is just cute even though it seems relatively simplistic at first. But it shows how lonely and desperate she is with wanting to speak and only makes her relationship with Tadano all the more wholesome.

Then we have my personal favorite the based Osana Najimi. They are the most hilarious of the main cast of characters with their bombastic personality and trolling nature. Oftentimes, they do try to put Tadano and Komi into a situation to make them closer, but they are a good friend.

Supporting cast. As I said, they also have their own personalities and are about as entertaining as the main characters. There's Agari, a nerdy girl who gets nervous anytime she has to speak directly to others (and later decides to become Komi's pet due again to misunderstandings). There's one who believes herself to be in a rivalry with Komi, but Komi does not even know she exists. And, of course, we have a chuunibyou who is convinced that she knew Komi from a past life.

While I love a majority of the characters, the one I absolutely loathe is Yamai Ren. She is your typical yandere girl who is greatly obsessed with Komi, but it tends to go too far and is not funny at all. Really, that one scene where she discovered one of Komi's strands of hair is scarring. Worse, she even goes to drastic measures to be closer to Komi that I really wanted the outcome to be that Komi would befriend the entire class with her being tossed to the curb like the hot trash she is. At least from what I have heard the manga has her appear less.

The voice work and sound need no complex reason as to why they are good. Just really, the show is nearly perfect in its themes; relatability; animation, etc. Definitely a must-watch.

They made a anime about the same thing i have
Dave-cannot-communicate9 December 2021
Awesome anime, 10/10. Anime of the year, altough it is the only anime i have watched this year. Made me cry. I think everyone should watch it at least once. Maybe i am a little biased because i also cannot communicate. I've learned so much from it. One thing that made me confused was that the teacher did not know that she could not talk, when i went to school it was the first thing the teacher said to the class about me.

Komi-san is very reletable because i also am scared to communicate with others, which has made it impossible to find friends. I am also scared to text others because i don't know what to write most of the time.

Maybe you were right, Maybe I was wrong, But I've been silent for far too long.

It's been so long since I watched something of this level.
suyashmalav29 October 2021
I read 2 volumes of its manga recently until I became aware its anime adaptation was about to release in October.

It was worth waiting for.

It has a funny way of story-telling and great art.

I have no doubt you'll enjoy watching it.

Cute and potentially valid
kerorogio25 November 2021
A series that, in its basic idea of the involuntary communication difficulties, finds a very interesting starting point. Komi and Tadano are a nice duo and Najimi is a likeable character. Together they make a self-sufficient trio for a good part of the time, however the biggest limitation of the series comes from the support of the secondary characters. There are no events of particular importance (ramen shop, dress shop, pool etc...), except perhaps the glimpses dedicated to Komi's family, and the goal of making her many new friends forces the authors to introduce them with a certain speed.

It is usually a delicate operation to create a character with qualities that make them memorable, takes time... and it must be said that a good portion of the animes do not shine in this aspect. Having to introduce new characters in almost every episode, also following the setting of the comic (still in progress and rather long-lived for the context), the authors constantly throw out stupid stereotypes or poorly defined people, in the sad attempt to make people smile. Frankly, these crazy human doormats are not even remotely funny nor originals.

In this series everyone is in love with Komi; men, women... even the school blackboard if it had life. All except Tadano lack intuition or the ability to ask certain questions that could oxidize the figure of their goddess, while they are inclined to feel themselves inadequate or to improvise a sort of "mental reading", mostly wrong. A gesture from Komi or a look at her falsely impassive face makes everyone fall in love, she is practically a symbol of divine perfection and genetic selection for the world in which she lives, despite the fact that she has a modest, naive and fearful personality, uncommon traits for any girl who is minimally aware of her attractiveness.

In this sense, her communication problem is rather diminished, because after the shock everyone accepts her friendship willingly and adores her more than before, even people that she herself should rather exclude and remove from her list of acquaintances, such as Yamaki, the yandere. Komi is a very particular human case, not only for the communicative factor, in fact in the behavior of the girl, on some occasions we notice a purer and sometimes childish soul. The fear from which she is dominated has certainly clipped her wings, keeping her isolated or at home more than necessary, but this has also preserved Komi from negative contamination of society.

I only watched the episodes for the brief moments between Komi and Tadano, which fortunately remain tender without overdoing the romance. In fact Tadano, although kind-hearted, does not even think about trying, because he considers himself too average for such a high level girl , a fearful but realistic attitude. As for Komi instead, well there is no event that has sparked interest and it is difficult to say, given the particular subject, the extent of her feelings and... if this is not motivated simply by being partially understood by someone of the opposite sex who is outside the family unit. The two students need time to be taken seriously, more than the setting can allow them without being redundant and ... boring. So far, in seven episodes viewed , apart from the young Yamaki (who has already calmed down), there have been no major dangers or problems, despite Komi's cascade of suitors. I will continue to follow the vision, but I don't have high expectations from a narrative point of view.

Overall, a pleasant evening stopgap, with a light atmosphere. Like many discreet Japanese products, it could do much more.

Repetitive and Annoying
ranadeavadhut17 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Komi Can't Communicate is a boring, repetitive, and annoying anime that is not worth your time. The show is about a high school girl named Komi who has a severe case of social anxiety. She is so afraid of talking to people that she is unable to utter a single word. The only way that Komi can communicate is through handwritten notes.

The show's premise is interesting, but it is not executed well. The characters are one-dimensional and the plot is predictable. The show relies too heavily on Komi's social anxiety for laughs, and it quickly becomes tiresome.

The worst part of the show is the special treatment that Komi receives. She is constantly given special passes and privileges that no other student gets. This makes her seem like a Mary Sue, and it undermines the show's message about the importance of overcoming social anxiety.

If you are looking for a good anime about social anxiety, I would recommend A Silent Voice. It is a much more realistic and nuanced portrayal of the condition. Komi Can't Communicate is a waste of time, and I would not recommend it to anyone.

I know that some people love this anime, but I just couldn't get into it. I found it to be boring, repetitive, and annoying. If you're looking for a good anime about social anxiety, I would recommend A Silent Voice instead.

Weird, stupid, but kinda fun and wholesome sometimes
alantas21 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have zero experience with Japanese high school comedies, so this is the first one I've ever seen. First off, the technical side is okay, I like the animation, the characters are well realized and the end credit of the second half of the series is just fantastic.

As the title suggests our main protagonist can't really communicate like a normal human being, because she has sociophobia. I think most of us experience social awkwardness to some degree in our lifetimes. Komi's condition is so severe, that she can barely talk. However, she's perceived as beautiful, so she's the most popular girl in school for whatever reason. Her aim is to make a hundred friends despite her shyness. This is the premise of the show. Her friend Tadano, who can read her mind most of the time, helps in this endeavor.

The class is full of wacky characters, who aren't too deep but entertaining to watch nonetheless. We follow their adventures as they experience high school life together and try to please Komi. One of them called Yamai, who's a girl and straight up in love with Komi, but in a really creepy way. She's a stalker basically and she even kidnaps Tadano at some point. I thought it was kind of funny, but stalking in real life is not funny at all, so I had mixed feelings about that. The show includes some nice Japanese traditions, but also includes weird cultural hangups that have a lot to do with sex fetishes. Obviously this series isn't for kids (I think).

The main characters aren't bad to watch, but I don't really get the mute hot girl trope. Is it a trope? I don't know, but I've seen other anime with similar female leads. So I guess it's a thing. Tadano is a bit boring, but well balanced, truly good-natured people often perceived as such. I don't mind a male lead who serves as the backbone of the circle of friends. The stakes are pretty low generally, but I don't mind if I'm entertained. This show is my guilty pleasure.

You soon see it for the gimmick it is
lickyfacefilms26 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm incredibly disappointed with how this anime progressed. In the first episode there is an incredibly moving moment when the main characters spend all day writing to each other on a blackboard. It's from here I think "Wow, this show really thought outside the box". Little did I know it'd soon stuff that forward thinking back into a box with a rusty pole and set it on fire.

Because what follows is just your run of the mill high school anime complete with hyperactive characters with their own unique quirks. Quirks like wanting to be a literal dog to our main character for sexual satisfaction. Kidnapping and threatening to murder her best friend if she doesn't go out with her. Possibly being a boy but nobody knows for sure. Wanting to best her at every little thing but being no good at any of it. A girl who treats the lead like a princess from an RPG. And a Ninja....yea, for some reason there's a guy whose a ninja. Did I mention they all shout....like every line, and nearly all of them provide fan service in nearly every scene they're in

Also. No matter how crazy their actions get the main character ends up friends with them. Let me remind you that one of them literally tied up her friend and stuffed him in a closet because she wanted into her panties

I thought Japan was done producing this kind of loud mindless sexist gimmick fest, but to my horror this came out in 2021!! Really???

With such a sweet opening episode you wonder why it isn't a movie so they can condense the nonsense into an hour and a half. I'd recommend watching Erased.

The Best Romantic Love story I have ever watched. It was simply amazing. The characters are very well written. It is very important to have a good heart and be kind to others is what I learnt. It has also broadened my scope of understanding social relationships. Again if you like innocent love that is true love it is a must watch.

Heart Warming
abhinavk-1835227 December 2021
"Komi-san wa, Komyushou Desu" is a slice of life anime. The anime's OP and ED both are excellent (the level where you'd like to add their lofi versions to your playlist) and the background music is amazing (if you're a regular lofi listener, you'll probably recognize most of them). The story is a bit random and "far from reality", as most of the anime in the genre are, but the wholesome part is what makes the most of anime. If you miss your school days or just want a daily dose of wholesome content, you're gonna love watching Komi-san being awkward in public and trying to overcome her social anxiety.

Cute but gets boring quickly
animallemons27 February 2023
The first episode had me hooked and excited for series! It was such a heartwarming episode that hooks the viewer in. So I continued to watch the series. Episode one through five was amazing. But...After the fifth episode everything seemed very predictable and the series got stale very quickly, to the point where I would put it on for background noise while cleaning my room and so on. There were too many characters being introduced that It was hard to keep up with everyone. However, there were some really funny jokes and scenes that had me stop what I was doing so I can see what was going on, but there arent any specific scenes. I found myself skipping theorugh the series, After episode 11 I skipped through episodes to see which ones even LOOKED interesting. In total I watched about 14-15 episodes (out of order after episode 11) before just skipping to the end. In the end, its just an alright series.

Charm
Mysterygeneration13 January 2024
Despite its distinct charm, Komi Can't Communicate is an excellent rendition of the manga. The anime has excellent animation and faithfully translates text humor and chibi faces; nevertheless, most subtitles might not catch all that is on screen, which could be a problem for the translation. Even though the character designs are adorable, their unusual proportions make them appear strange when moving.

Not the gimmick, but the entire plot revolves around the adorable but distant waifu, which is the show's worst flaw. The story's primary focus is action adventure, so the romantic tension between the hero and heroine is not established. Similar to shounen anime, this show uses romantic tension to entice viewers to create doujins and ship characters.

Pretty Nice
supermonye25 January 2022
You know, i went into this show thinking, Nah, this is going to be another cringe anime with jarring animation and an awful plot, but this ended up being to me, a masterpiece. While the overall show is great, I can not stop gushing about the first episode. As a person with social anxiety, It was an extreme breath of fresh air and perfectly encapsulated that awful feeling, coupled off with the powerful emotional scene when Komi and Tadano write on the chalk board. I recommend this show for its extremely memorable characters, awesome animation and the fact that its an overall breath of fresh air.

Blew up the budget in 1st episode
pranitpawar-180221 April 2022
Okay, so i loved (koe no katachi)i.e a silent voice, it's one of my favorite series of all time. And magically one day the trailer for this anime popped up on my screen, read the synopsis and found out it had some similarities with koe no katachi, even the female leads have similar names so head some good reviews about the manga so i was pretty hyped for koni can't communicate adaptation, okay fast forward 6 months I fire Netflix up and find the first episode on the front page, without wasting any minute I start watching it, and not gonna lie it was phenomenal the animation, the character design, the voice acting the everything. I was pleased that good animes are still being made but....the rest of the series I watched it dragging my self, the same old jokes about the komi being cute, the same old generic romance plot, the plain character writing without any dimension to them making them overly dramatic, cringe at some times so yeah that's what my review is.

If you see on TikTok some people may overhated the story and the plot. But it's a very good story how the process that Komi becoming more and more social to her friend.
