Cat Ladies (2009)
SnakesOnAnAfricanPlain13 December 2011
Funny but in a rather depressing bittersweet way. Cat Ladies follows a number of "crazy cat ladies", and looks at their lives. One thing that is obvious is that these are all very lonely and sad women. Whether they grew up in America speaking German just after the war, had abusive parents, or were adopted into an overachieving family. All these women became outcasts and used their cats as a way to escape. Some are harmless enough, with just a few cats, and others make it their duty to capture cats and let them overrun their homes. Again some want a way out of this life, and some can't see themselves living any other way. Showing the different characters details that there is not one way to become like this, but perhaps more human interaction would help. A great soundtrack and not judgmental. I found it to be a fair, funny, and tragic view of a strange world.

highly entertaining quite beautifully made movie, but...a little questionable in its intent

Warning: Spoilers
"we really wanted to investigate this whole notion of the crazy cat lady who never gets married or has children" was almost a mantra from the producer at the screening I caught of this highly amusing but... somewhat troubling cinematic effort. . .

I'm afraid that all that was really accomplished here was a good time had by all laughing at those less fortunate than ourselves. I'm not sure what kind of redeeming silver lining the filmmakers might have inserted/conjured up from the midst of this rather sad subject matter, but. . . as it stands the film left me with a bit of a sick feeling about the whole affair.

I guess I came away from this film hoping that at least participation in it served some purpose for the subjects of the film who provided us with so much basically mean spirited fun watching them.

one aspect of the film that struck me is that when there are more than say 10 cats in someones' house they go from seeming like companions/pets to appearing to be something more like an infestation, like giant insects or something, quite disgusting cats can be in large groups.

when all is said and done it was very watchable however, offering very elegant coverage of the proverbial train wreck

With these women ...

... too much is not enough!

There are too many cats everywhere and these often lovable creatures are destroying the wildlife around them. Read about the devastation to the bird population just in the USA by cats as pets !!.

It appeared these women spend too much time cuddling these kitties and not enough time spaying and neutering. I left this show feeling sad for these confused women.

Horrifying and sad

This film shows some very sad women who have substituted cat hoarding for relationship with friends, family, and partners. Most come from very unhappy childhoods. Their lives are taken over by their needs to feed, clean litter boxes, etc. It appears that many of the cats need vet care that the women cannot afford as well. The one sane voice of the animal cruelty prevention officer gave a good balance to the film's sad stories. I am not a cat person at all (I like dogs) and can't imagine this although I am also a single older women with limited social contacts and alienation from my sibling. You have to wonder why some (99%) women develop this obsession and hoarding behavior.
